Dojin Work, Volume 2

Rate this book
It's not easy drawing Dojin manga to make money on the side, and that's exactly what Najimi is learning...and she's not alone. There are literally thousands of artists trying to make a buck, and many of them suck just as bad as Najimi. Enter Kaneru - a rival artist who's so deluded she thinks she's better than Najimi...unfortunately she's awful, too! They have to find a way to bring attention to their books...but what could possibly draw the Otaku in?

This manga series in general is not for everyone: Thankfully the second volume was not as jarring as the first one in the sense of the plot and not as many mature subject matters. In addition, in between two heavy stories this volume was definitely perfect fluff. My only issue that I had with this particular volume was that they changed the format without warning and that there isnt much happening. Because of these points, I have to give this manga volume a 3-3.5 out of 5 stars. Definitely something I'd reread for giggles

While I adored the first volume of this series, I wasn't as taken with this volume. Why? Well... it's boring.

In the end the biggest drawback with this volume is that it pretty much didn't bring anything new to the table. All of the jokes that you saw in this first volume? Repeated endlessly. There is a new character introduced as a rival for the main character (who draws just as badly as she does), but it really wasn't enough to keep me as entertained as I was the first time. I actually got bored at several points in the manga & had to re-read parts because it just wasn't gripping me as much as it should & I forgot what I'd read. They keep falling back on the "LOL! Her art is bad & Justice is a pedo because he has a girlfriend who looks like she's 8!" jokes. (I'm unsure of her exact age.)They were funny-ish in the first volume but this volume takes it a little too far & just repeats it too much. What could have been a great source of humor was just one note & worn out in this volume. In other words, the lolicon humor stopped being funny & when it stops being funny lolicon is just stupid or boring at best & creepy at worst. This wasn't horribly creepy or anything, but it was boring which might actually have been worse.

I understand that this is a gag comic with an ecchi bent. I understand that plot really isn't supposed to be a factor in this comic like in regular manga. I just didn't like it as much as the previous volume. What irritates me is that there's supposed to be 4 more volumes of this series. Really? At the pace they're going they could have told this story in one volume. I don't even think the strip layout did anything to change the impact of the series- Azumangah Daioh had the same format & was pretty fun to read.

Unless you have the sharp desire to complete the series, avoid this volume & just read it in the stores before making the decision to purchase it. Right now I have to admit, I don't know if I really want to buy the next volume or not, especially at the price of $11.99 per book. Unless the next volume is just amazing or the company drastically lowers the price of the books, I'm going to have to just call this series a wash & take the books down to the local used book store.

Bottom line: Go read "Fall in Love Like a Comic", "Genshiken" or "Comic Party" instead. They cover the same jokes (minus the bad artwork angle) & is much funnier. This series was promising at first but this second volume is mediocre bordering on stupid. The fact that I'm being charged more than I would for a regular manga? ($9.99 is the industry standard.) That's what really made me decide to give the book a 2 star review rather than 3 stars.
