Emma loves animals, and she can’t wait to foster a cat! But what will happen when she brings the cat home? Will Emma and the cat get along? Will Emma’s fish and the cat get along? Emma is Deaf and often uses sign language to communicate, and this early chapter book includes an ASL fingerspelling chart and a sign language guide.
Emma and her family are fostering a cat named Mittens. Mittens seems to be having a hard time adjusting. First, Mittens leaves a trail of destruction around the house, and then she disappears and the family can't find her. But when Emma wakes up, Mittens has found something that settles her down.
The meaning of the ending of this is very subtle and may have to be explained to some kids . Throughout the story some names and items are spelled out in ASL finger spelling in the story. At the end of the book are a couple more ASL signs for readers to learn. This wasn't my favorite Emma Every Day book, but it was an enjoyable story. I wish the ending were clearer, that's the only drawback.
A short, sweet, easy beginning reader that follows a girl named Emma and her adventure fostering a cat. Emma is d/Deaf and is both shown using ASL with her family and relying on her cochlear implants to hear and speak.
