Will her first case be her last?

Werewolf Sara Flores got her P.I. license for one reason — to give cops an excuse why they might find her near dead bodies. A lot of dead bodies. She hoped it would keep them from investigating her as carefully. But when someone tries to run over a friend of hers, Sara decides to become a real private eye and take the case. A smart, ruthless, very rich man is determined to kill her client and he doesn’t care what it costs him in hired assassins or explosives. He wants her dead. And now that Sara’s on his trail, he wants her dead too.

Is this newbie P.I. in over her head? Can she protect her client 24/7 (even werewolves have to sleep!), fight off hired assassins, dodge the police and convince a man used to getting what he wants that he has to stop? Permanently convince him? Sara can’t let anyone find out what she is. Nobody — at least nobody alive — believes in werewolves, and Sara needs to keep it that way. [Novella -- 140 pages]

Did you ever want to be more than yourself? I always have. As a kid, I imagined I lived up in the clouds with a band of other kids. We would swoop down — because we could fly! — and rescue people in trouble. And we’d beat the crap out of their abusers. When I got older, I became obsessed with crime and mysteries. I wanted to know how someone could track down evil doers and peel back their false faces — exposing them to the world.

The day I quit my corporate job — my dreams came true. Today I spend my days throwing my character, Sara Flores, at one criminal mastermind after another — just to see what she can do.

And… I cheated. I let her be more than herself by making her a werewolf — the only magical creature in a world otherwise just like ours. Because I wanted to see what she could do with a wolf’s senses and strength. And wildness.

So join me for stories of ruthless criminals, suspicious cops, and Sara’s small band of misfits fighting to save us all. Test drive my world with a free story at SueDenver.com.

Werewolf for Hire
By Sue Denver
Our gal of the story is a werewolf. She started her own company when she got her P.I. license. She practices shooting at her friend's range. Her friend has been getting harassed. Car smashed. She was almost killed. She needed help so our gal took the job.
It was so exciting. Intense, action packed, suspense, with great fight scenes. Of course she has to use her wolf!
This is a short book but it was great anyway. It may be to introduce the characters and world. I am hooked! I will look for the next book.
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this book.

Sara Flores has recently gotten her PI license. It's mostly a cover to keep from being too heavily investigated if she's found near dead bodies. Sara is a fairly new werewolf and doesn't need the heat. However, her friend is in danger and needs Sara's help. Sara's a PI for real now. Can she outsmart the bad guys, keep her friend safe and keep her werewolf side secret?

I enjoy books with well-plotted mysteries and exciting supernatural elements, and I was happy to find both in this fast-paced novella! Sara is a tough, smart, and lethal but likable MC. And she's surrounded by a solid group of secondary characters, including another strong female character, Lillian, a former military war vet dealing with PTSD. I also loved Mason, Sara's brilliant IT tech; he gets some great lines!

The werewolf aspect and how Sara must keep her secret is only one facet of the story. Primarily this is a detective book with Sara having to hit the ground running with her investigative business and the dangerous case at hand, which features a despicable bad guy and some unexpected twists. Denver packs a lot of action into 140 pages in this quick, entertaining read. It was just long enough to make me want more werewolves, so this is a series I hope to read more of!
Thank you to the author for the gifted ARC. I was under no obligation to review and all thoughts are my own.

I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the cover of this book, but the blurb really drew me in. I started reading this and in no time at all, I was completely, 100% invested in the story. We don’t get a lot of information upfront, but the way the author writes this, you don’t really need the information all at once. This is a detective fiction book but with a werewolf main character, and this is mostly about solving a case, sort of a first case for Sara. I absolutely adored her, Lillian, Ben, and Mason. This is a quick read, but I hope that there are lots more books to come with these fun characters, and we see lots more mysteries to come…and hopefully, more of Ben and Sara. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Werewolf For Hire is the first book in the Sara Flores Werewolf PI series by American author, Sue Denver. It’s after the third incident that Lillian Knudsen surreptitiously contacts one of her regular clients at BK Shooting Range, Sara Flores. Vandalism of her car, then potentially accident-causing damage, followed by being rammed in a car park: she needs to act.

In the eighteen months since Sara Flores was turned into a werewolf, she has been acting as a one-woman vigilante team, meting out justice to those who deserve it. Qualifying as a PI allows her to be at crime scenes under less suspicion. She takes Lillian’s concerns very seriously, immediately implementing a plan to keep her safe.

But when Lillian’s car is forced off the road on her way home, and Sara acts to save her, it draws the attention of the perpetrator onto her. Her tech expert, Mason Spencer is tracking down the decidedly dangerous interested party, but Sara needs to get her wolfdog, Skidi to a safe place, and that means involving the attractive but off-limits Bill Hanalho, head priest of the Lupiti tribe.

A gutsy protagonist like Sara, whose appearance belies secret ability, ensures that she is underestimated by many who would do her harm, making for plenty of action and a not-insignificant body count by the final pages. The plot takes a few unexpected turns before an exciting climax and a very satisfactory resolution.

This is a new series for a character who features in the author’s earlier books: there is enough recap that the reader will not be confused, but will have their interest in Sue Denver’s work piqued. Denver puts the emphasis on female self-sufficiency, and the werewolf aspect does not overwhelm the story. Enjoyable paranormal fiction.

‘Werewolf for Hire’ is a mystery novella. It begins with Sara Flores, a very strong and good P.I. licenced-to-hire who happens to get a call from Lillian Jackson asking for protection after she gets hit by a car. Someone wants to kill Lillian, and Sara is determined to find out who and why. As the story progresses, things get even more dangerous, and Sara realizes that she has to take in all her skills and powers to ensure things pan out the way they should.

The scenes and the way the author describes them enable you to envision them. The plotline is engaging, fast-paced and well-put together. As a female protagonist, Sarah is empowering and makes you want to cheer her on.

This is a book in a series, so I appreciated how the author ended the story with sufficient closure but left more for wanting. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

If I have to pitch this book in one line and convince you to read this I’d say, if you like the idea of a badass female main character getting the upper hand and beating a few powerful, rich bad guys, please pick up Werewolf for Hire.

A short novella by Sue Denver following Sara Flores a new PI investigator who is hired by Lillian Knudeen who owns a shooting range with her dead husband Bo. Lillian keeps on telling herself that the unfortunate accidents happening to her are just that, accidents. Coming back from serving in Iraq and the trauma doesn’t help her case either. She thinks she is being paranoid but hires Sara either way. What starts as a goose chase turns into a wild hunt back and forth with people getting caught in the crossfire and getting injured or worse.

Some of the things that I liked about this novella were, firstly, not giving extra attention to the actual hunts and action scenes, and rather focusing on the planning, which I feel is more interesting when it comes to books because we get to explore how the minds of our characters work.

When it comes to mystery, readers will appreciates the nuisances of the plan more than the actual plan. Secondly, there is a well-developed plot. “Werewolf for hire” has enough to keep you on the edge of your seat without adding unwarranted drama.

Thirdly, the sort and crisp chapters. Short chapters are easier to get through and that makes this book much more reader-friendly. There are no unnecessary details, and I feel that, a good mystery isn’t necessarily one written in 500+ pages; captivating the mind of the readers with lesser words sounds better.

One of the major things that worked for me was how the author talked about PTSD. Lillian was stationed in Iraq and she loses one of her feet in an attack. She constantly struggles with anxiety and reminds herself she isn’t there anymore, she is back home safe and they can’t harm her now. Books are a major source of information for people and mention of such severe issues which are often neglected in general discussion only helps in breaking the mould.

The one thing that I felt was missing from this book is the supernatural creatures since this is a book about werewolves and while I didn’t expect a lot of werewolves to make appearances our main character being one, I was expecting a little more of the wolf than we got. Although it nowhere hinders the storyline as a fantasy/sci-fi fan I feel the elements that keep it true to the genre are important. And while I liked the idea that this heavily relied on the plot and characters, the lack of world-building was a little disappointing.

Sara, our main character was my favorite and not just for her strength and not giving up attitude but also for her presence of mind. She was confident of her power and that gave her an upper hand. I love such characters. Other than Sara, I liked Mason (her partner) as well. Although he doesn’t have an active role to play and remains a side character. They made for a good team and also kept me hooked throughout.

Werewolf for hire is a very easy-flowing story with more attention given to the plot details than the world-building. The intrinsic details about the involvement of the police, the investigation conducted by them, and how that creates unwarranted trouble for Sara were quite nicely done. The narration is done in the third person which gives the reader a glimpse into all the characters and their actions can be watched closely, however that takes away the thrill of guessing the next step because you go through each of their minds.

If you’re looking for a supernatural mystery short novella with strong characters and a good plot that makes you think about what happens next, “Werewolf for hire” is the book for you. It makes for a good read and I think keeping the book short was a genius move on the part of the author.

Pros:
Strong and well-written characters.
Short and to-the-point chapters.
Focuses majorly on the plot.

Cons:
Needed a little more of the supernatural element.

Cover score: 5/10

Book Score: 7.7/10

Review of Werewolf For Hire
By Sue Denver

Strong Feminine Empowerment

Lillian Knudsen was having a bad day, which prompted her to leave the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce luncheon early. Her left leg prothesis, a constant reminder of her military service in Iraq, wasn’t adjusted to the correct height for her shoes, which made walking extremely frustrating. Hugging the cars on her left to allow a car whose engine revved to bypass her, the car still managed to hit her good right leg. As she lay against a blue Chevy, having been slammed into it and bashing her head on the trunk, she decided someone was trying to kill her and she needed some help.

Sara Flores is a werewolf, having been turned by a Lupiti shaman just before he died. She recently got her P.I. license as she found herself frequently around crime scenes, generally as a result of her increased sense of smell and her innate sense of justice. While practicing her shooting at BK’s Shooting Range, she received a note from Lillian, the owner, requesting a meeting with her. Lillian wanted to hire Sara to help her figure out who was trying to kill her, as well as provide bodyguard services. Before she knew it, Sara had hired 2 men to help her protect Lillian, plus Mason, her technical guru, had flown to Tulsa to help her.

I was delighted to see this longer offering from Sue Denver. She has a fantastic heroine in Sara Flores and her books showcase feminine empowerment. Her stories have strong plots, with multiple twists and turns, most of which you absolutely don’t see coming. I really look forward to more books from Sue featuring Sara Flores!

My Rating: 5 Stars!.

This was a very fun, quick read that breaks a lot of werewolf tropes you see in other stories of this type. The protagonist is a lone wolf (haha!) and there isn't any sort of pack structure - or, in fact, any mention of other werewolves or supernatural critters at all. Is Sara an aberration? The last of her kind? We'll have to read on to find out!

I like the attention to detail in Sara's security measures that she implements as a PI. There's a level of thoughtfulness to it all that really shows through. What I like even more, however, is the fact that Sara isn't an expert on everything and in fact seeks out specialized training that she didn't have starting out. You almost always meet protagonists of this sort fully formed, at the height of their abilities, so it was very refreshing to see a character recognizing they need help.

The biggest struggle I had with this book was the antagonist's motivation. He seemed hyper-exaggerated, almost like a caricature. Secondarily, some of the characters' reactions to things seemed a bit out of whack to what was happening - particularly the scene where Lillian finds out Sara's secret.

Overall, though, this was a very solid story, and I will eagerly add the rest of Sara's adventures to my TBR. I am excited to learn more about her werewolf nature.

Awesome Beginning to a Great Storyline . . .

Lillian Knudsen was in discomfort with her leg, a “gift” from her service in Iraq, so she left the luncheon early. A revved engine had her crowding closer to the parked cars, but the speeding vehicle struck her regardless. It was enough to convince her it was intentional. Someone was trying to kill her.

Lillian contacted Sara Flores, a werewolf with a P.I. license, who practices at Lillian’s shooting range. She asked Sara for help and a bodyguard. Sara immediately hired the experts she needed to keep Lillian safe. The enemy will apparently spare no expense to now kill both women. But he hasn’t dealt with these two… and hasn’t met Sara’s wolf!

This fast-paced, action-packed story will keep the reader fully invested in discovering what is prompting this attack. The reader will also feel the strength and confidence in the female protagonists. They are not timid. And they won’t back down. Grab your copy and follow the twists and turns that lead to the final showdown. I think we are all eagerly awaiting Book 2 now!

Having started with book 2 and loved it, I’ve gone back in time to the beginning of Sara Flores’ brilliant story!

Sara is technically a PI, but this is only a cover to keep the police away from her as she has a huge secret; Sara is a werewolf!

When an attempt is made on the life of her friend and local shooting range owner, Lillian, Sara finds herself becoming a PI for real. Werewolf life is a fairly new experience for Sara and so she has to carefully balance the advantages her new abilities give her, against getting discovered and caught, bringing a whole new meaning to a game of cat and mouse - a game of werewolf and bad guy, maybe?

Sue Denver has written and developed the characters of Sara and Mason, her sidekick, really well. There’s plenty of action, twists, tension and a bit of humour too - all in all a great read 😄

4 ⭐️ Thank you to Sue Denver for kindly gifting me an ARC in return for an honest review.

WEREWOLF FOR HIRE Book 1 of 3 by Sue Denver. Sue Denver has created an entire world around Sara Flores, a werewolf turned private investigator to cover the fact that she is a werewolf. There is a whole set of prequels as well as two books describing her early days as a werewolf before you get to the current series WEREWOLF P.I. This is Book 1 of this series. Sara didn’t ask to be a werewolf but now that she is one she is enjoying the power. In this book she is asked to help find out why Lillian, a shooting range owner, is being targeted. It is a fun read and kept my attention throughout. You don’t need to read the earlier books but it does help understand how it all began. I always want to know the back story so wind up searching on the author to find out about other books. There are 3 books in this series. Sue Denver has a website where she lists fall the books about Sara.

Sue Denver is one of my new favourite authors having finished Werewolf for Hire in a single sitting. A fast paced, action packed story with some good plot twists.

Sara, having been turned into a werewolf, only to have her turnee die, is used to being a lone wolf. Especially believing that she is the last/only werewolf. She is intense, single minded and intelligent. Her IT side kick, Mason is gradually working his way into her life against her better judgement.

I will absolutely be looking for the next in the series.

Hooked me from the first page and kept me to the last! Already pre ordered book 2 and ordered the previous books Werewolf Lady 1 and 2. Loved Sara, our PI, werewolf. Her assistant, nah partner, Mason. Lillian Knudsen, a war vet, amputee has someone out for her. She reaches out to Sara and we are off. This is a fast paced short story that delivers it all. Paranormal, mystery, duplicity, friendships. The characters are well developed and you care. Am so ready for book 2. Thank you Hidden Gems for the arc! PI Sara has been a werewolf for 18 months, and is still finding herself because there are no further special aspects of being a werewolf. Everything she does has to be self-taught. She receives a case from Lillian, who believes the things that happen cannot just be a string of coincidences. The story predominantly switches between both perspectives as Lillian has suspicions on why these coincidences are happening and Sara's mission to solve this case. The story is full of action with close calls.

I loved this book! I've been unimpressed with so many of the shifter storeies I've read lately, I almost didn't start this one.....but WOW, I definitely ned to read the next books in the series too.

Gun club owner/ widow needs help with mysterious stalker. Not exactly an ad for the classifieds. Lillian knows she needs help, but is reluctant to ask Sara. Circumstances continue until Lillian MUST do something or she'll be killed. When Sara steps in, things change, mostly for the better. There's plenty of action, tension and even a love story or two in there. Sue Denver gives us an intriduction to a female werewolf. Let's hope she'll be around solving crime for awhile.

This was my first book from Sue Denver, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Sara Flores, Werewolf P.I. Series. This novella is a great introduction to the series. I liked the characters, the story, the intrigue, the action, and the twists and turns. The storyline is original and fast-paced. April Doty did a great job bringing this story to life. Good plot and rollicking fun

What a great concept! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the characters and following them around as they went after the bad guy—a really nasty piece of work. I really hope her client also becomes her friend. Sara needs some friends who know her secret and keep it for her faithfully. Does she ever find any other werewolves? What can she learn about her kind? I’ll be looking for answers in following books. What a great, easy-reading series.

Highly recommend to readers who love paranormal and shifter books.

While it is not my favorite motif (I prefer a m/m based motif) I am all about a good writer. Werewolf for hire is my first exposure to Sue Denver, at least I thinks so, and it was a decent enough read to send me off looking at her other work. I do like the main character, and the plot is interesting if not complicated. I feel it is missing a lot of background and worldbuilding, hence the search in case there were other books that preceded this one. For now a 3.5 (4 since goodreads won't let us split the points)

Pretty good p.i. werewolf story. A woman veteran with a prosthetic leg is being stalked n and does not know why. She hires Sara Flores, a private eye, to investigate and as a bodyguard. Kind of a standard plot line, but the flaw was the silliness of the bad guy’s motive. Lillian’s husband, who died two years before, had bested the bad man in a fight, and with a woman, while in the service. He couldn’t get revenge by killing Bo, so he decided to kill his widow. I found that a little hard to believe. But the reason is not the biggest part of the plot, usually, anyway, right?

Super Fun Read

This book was a lot of fun to read. It kept my interest throughout the whole book. I am excited to see where this series goes. You can't help but root for Sara.
I did not realize there is a series of stories/prequels/novellas as well. It would have been nice to know this before starting on the first book as I did feel like I was missing how/why Sara got turned. You are told who did it, but there was no back story. That would be my only complaint.

Short, sharp story. Racing through your mind and imagination like an Express Train. Literally pulling out the stops to formulate a great thriller and good read. Sarah’s getting used to this PI work, with help from Simon and her wolf dog, which started as a cover story for her nocturnal practices as an assassin protecting the innocent and preventing the further deaths of people classed as collateral damage.

Werewolf Detective, I was intrigued. So I bought this book & WAS NOT disappointed! The plot was well thought out & well written. A twist I didn't see coming.

Sarah is a lead I can get behind & I really want more of the back/ orgin story. The action is tightly written, the characters well developed.

Can't wait for the next adventure!
