A sweet, swoony YA romance about discovering and celebrating your worth.

Seventeen-year-old Essie is looking forward to her summer holidays.

It means weeks of dedicating herself to her sewing business while her parents are busy working. Sure, her jerk of a brother is home from university, but he’s mostly working too, so it’s easy to stay out of his way. She can be herself – whoever she wants to be, without expectation or judgement or always being told she’s over-dramatic.

It’s going to be amazing.

Until Jackson Sherwood, her brother’s childhood friend, comes to stay.

Jax. Essie has no time for the smug jerk who’s always smirking at her, like he’s so much better than her.

Jax’s arrival threatens to ruin her plans for a peaceful summer, but as their situation forces them to spend time together, Essie starts to see a hidden side of the unwanted guest, and starts to learn about who she is, where she fits in the world … and what she’s willing to stand up for.

A fantastic debut novel by Lynda Tomalin, which is high praise since I’m not usually a YA fan!

I loved the feistiness of Essie and how she and Jax balanced one another

I’m a sucker for the older brothers best friend trope, so that got a big tick from me.

I found Essie’s relationships with her family (sadly) very relatable

If you enjoy YA romance by indie authors (who are also from New Zealand!) then I suggest you give it a read

I adored this sweet YA romance! Essie is such a strong character, and Jax is the perfect guy to balance her out.

I loved seeing their relationship grow, but also them grow as people throughout the book.

I’m not a huge YA fan usually, but this book didn’t feel childish, but it was also not too adult for the genre - it was the perfect mix!

Highly recommend this one for any romance fans!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The plot: due to some personal problems Jax asks his friend David to stay in his family's house while he figures things out. Essie is David's younger sister, who hates Jax, because she remembers him being sort of Casanova in school, going around breaking many girls' hearts. But as they live under one roof for some time, they both see each other in a different light, until one day Jax's ex shows up at the house.

What I didn't like:

This is just one thing and it is that the conflict between Jax and Essie seemed a bit dragged out to me. The second half of the book reminded me of this Katy Perry song:
"… you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no…" ©

I understand people being upset and angry, but I think that if a person begs you to talk to them and you care about them (which they both, obviously, did), then you should give a person a chance and at least listen. But then again, I remember that they are just teenagers, and being stubborn and overly emotional is a thing for them.

What I liked:

1. the characters. All the characters are well-written and especially the main ones - they are distinct, likable, and unique. Essie is outspoken, brave, dedicated to her job (although no one in the family supports her), and a good friend. Jax is such a nice guy - he studies, works, cooks, helps Essie, and is the best boyfriend there could be. Since the story is told from 2 POVs, it is important that I could easily distinguish which character is telling the story in the chapter.

2. the love story. This is haters-to lovers trope, I guess, although not entirely, because I don't think that Jax ever hated Essie. Anyway, I like the build-up of their relationship, how they get to know each other, that Essie is able to see Jax differently, and that Jax accepts Essie how she is and does not try to change her.

3. the dynamics. The narration is very fast-paced and there is never a dull moment. A lot is happening with the characters, but the story is not overwhelmed with unnecessary details or characters, so it is really easy and fun to read.

Overall opinion: I loved this book. It was a great read for me! The writing, the characters, the story - I enjoyed everything and was a bit sad when the book ended. The narration is captivating, funny, dramatic, and realistic. So, I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy a sweet love story and nice characters.

Initial Thoughts
This was a really wholesome and easy read. This is a book that many can enjoy for the emotional, yet lighthearted delivery of love, life and being valued for the individual you are.

What's great about this book?
- I loved that Essie was unashamedly herself in personality and with her fashion. Whilst her insecurities begin to show the further the reader gets to know her, I found her to be a good main character. She is very much so a teenager in tone and actions, which represents the target audience well. Yet, I enjoyed the aspects that I too could relate to as an adult. Her independence and creative drive with her clothing brand and social marketing were impressive. I am an artist with a hobby business, so I admired this young person taking on her passion and making a successful career out of it.
- However, my favourite character was Jax. He had so much to unpackage in this novel. He's a sweetheart, yet allowed the label of being seen as a player to represent him so he didn't have to dig deep into himself. I loved his journey and how both Essie and his cousin were there to cherish the real him and help him step out of the confines of what he thought or expected of himself. It was powerful and delivered with again the age-appropriate wonder and confusion of life at his age in life.
- I feel the author did a great job at representing realistic issues and allowing both characters to develop as the novel progressed and nurturing their adorable love story. It helps a lot that this book was dual perspective, so we got an insight into both Essie and Jax as events and feelings occurred.
- The romance was sweet. I liked that neither was looking at the other at first for anything, but with the forced proximity with Jax staying at Essie's and their constant crossing of paths, friendship and more was able to occur naturally. I also LOVEDDDDD the consent between the pair. This was a fantastic touch, and drew contrast between Jax and a side character Essie spends time with well.
- I read this in one sitting. It's a well-rounded story with substance but not too dragged out or long in telling the story either.

Things I didn't quite enjoy
- I found Essie's initial absolute hatred of Jax to be a very weak reason. Whilst teenage dramatics make it work, I'm glad this wasn't dragged out for too long.
- This isn't the first YA romance I've read where the parents are unsupportive of their child(ren) to the point of being outright disrespectful and making them feel unloved and underappreciated, yet with one scene, all is forgiven. This isn't a trend I appreciate in my reading. Whilst the story is told from a teenage aspect, and thus, a view on life that perhaps isn't painting the overall stressors and behaviours of the parents in full, from what I experienced in this read with Essie's emotions at the forefront, I found it hard to accept the renewal of connection between Essie and her mother. This is a small gripe, and whilst I equally can't see how it could have been resolved otherwise, I just find this theme in YA romances to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Final thoughts
I feel like teenage me would have liked this book just as much as I have as an adult. This is a fabulous debut from this kiwi author, and I'm looking forward to what's coming next.

Not me getting in my feels about a teen romance.

A wholesome debut, the story follows an ambitious girl named Essie as she navigates her family, her passions and a changing relationship with her brothers best friend, Jax.

From the outset, you get a real feel for these characters and it's hard not to like them. There was great banter, so many sweet moments and a protectiveness that built over the course of the story. I also adored the way they helped each other learn to the love the parts of themselves that others had so easily dismissed.

Essie is a fantastic lead. She is smart, bold, caring, dramatic and feisty in all the best ways and for me, she felt like a real teen - full of complicated emotions and big dreams.

And then there's Jax. Look I don't have a brother, but if I did and his best friend was Jax, you bet teen me would've been in love with him. He is charming, respectful, intentional and to top it all off, the guy can cook.

With complicated family dynamics rounding out this story, The Stars Burn Bright is a fast-paced read with stellar writing and a sweet romance. If you're looking for a lighthearted story or a YA contemporary for a teen in your life, you can't go wrong with this book.

I absolutely flew through this book & ate it up. This was such a cute YA romance that was so swoony & perfect.

In this book we follow the journeys of Estella, a bad ass, stand out, appealingly confident & strong 17 year old girl who has a flare for fashion & for standing her ground if anyone tries to get in her way. Around family though, that’s different, there’s higher expectations set for her than what she wants to achieve & nobody seems to care what she wants to do & just how amazing she is at it. At least, that’s what Jackson notices, her brothers best friend who’s currently sleeping in their spare room & he won’t stand for it.

This book had me feeling all the cutesy feels. It dabbled in a bit of enemies to lovers, brothers best friend/best friends sister & love triangles. I loved it, such a great YA romance read ❤️

The Stars Burn Bright by Lynda Tomalin is everything that a YA romance should be. Starring Estella Markham a bold, feisty and motivated 17 year old who is unapologetically herself. She can't help but shine through even if her family sees her as a drama queen. As Estella's summer break begins she is suddenly faced with several obstacles, the greatest of which is her older brother's best friend Jackson Sherwood.

Jackson Sherwood was born with natural charm. Everyone he meets falls immediately for his charisma, everyone except for his buddy's little sister Essie. Fresh from a breakup, Jax is in need of a place to crash and his best friend's parents are happy to help. He is willing to do whatever he can to show his gratitude, even trying to get along with the prickly Essie.

As Essie and Jax begin to cohabitate, each learns new things about the other and slowly a truce is formed. Can the person you find the most annoying some how become your closest friend? The Stars Burn Bright will take you on a rollercoaster ride as it answers this question.

I really loved this sweet story. It's the kind of story I want to see in my teen's library. It has a strong, independent young female heroine. Young men that know how to value and respect females, as well as feel emotions and show vulnerability. Full of romance, tension and humor Tomalin was able to deliver it all in an age appropriate way. Any teen lover of romance will devour this book.

Favorite Quotes:

“Yes, the whole ‘starlight, starbright’ thing. I used to wish every night that my little girl would grow up to be brave and bold and not let a single person ever tell her she couldn’t do something. I wished that she’d learn to stick up for herself and fight for others who couldn’t fight for themselves and have all her dreams come true.”

“Honey, leaving you here, even as an adult, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

“I would suggest you speak with him at some point, The two of you were special to each other, we could all see it. Don’t throw it away without trying.”

“Respect her boundaries, but if she’s the right one, prove to her that she can trust you with her heart.”

Summary:
Essie is a clothing designer who is excited for summer. She is ready to take her hobby and make it into more of a business venture, however, Essie doesn’t have the support of her parents. David, Essie’s brother, invited his best friend, Jax to live with his family for the summer. Essie despises Jax since he is living in her sewing room. Jax and Essie are forced to spend a day together and by happenstance, their friendship begins.

Review:
This is a beautifully written, young adult romance novel. A fast paced, relatable, page turner. I loved the character of Essie. She is a creative, yet brave and a feisty main character. She knows what she wants in life, owning her own company, and she’s not afraid to do hard things to get there. The relationship between Jax and Essie is the perfect amount of romance for a young adult read. No pages or scenes to be skipped. In this beautiful novel, we are treated to a delightful YA romance that explores themes of self-worth and personal growth. Seventeen year old Essie is eagerly anticipating her summer break, a chance to focus on her passion for sewing while her busy parents are occupied. With her brother's absence, Essie is ready to embrace her true self without the burden of judgment. Little does she know that the arrival of Jackson Sherwood (swoon), her brother's childhood friend, will disrupt her idyllic plans.

Initially dismissive of Jax's presence, Essie sees him as an arrogant and conceited individual, always wearing a smirk that irks her. Their forced proximity forces them to spend time together, revealing hidden facets of Jax's personality that challenge Essie's preconceived notions. Through their evolving relationship, Essie embarks on a journey of self-discovery, unraveling her own identity and learning where she truly belongs in the world.

Linda weaves a compelling narrative with genuine characters that resonate with authenticity. The author's prose is refreshingly straightforward, effortlessly capturing the emotions and experiences of adolescence. Tomalin's storytelling has a heartfelt sincerity that allows readers to empathise with Essie's struggles and cheer for her triumphs.

"The Stars Burn Bright" is more than just a tale of young love; it's a story about finding one's voice and standing up for what matters. Essie's growth throughout the novel is both relatable and inspiring, reminding us all of the importance of self-acceptance and the power of embracing individuality.

All in all, I absolutely adored it and I know that this novel will resonate with young readers seeking a genuine and uplifting tale of love and personal growth.

A young adult romance should be all that The Stars Burn Bright by Lynda Tomalin is. featuring 17-year-old Estella Markham, a fearless, determined, and unapologetic individual. Despite the fact that her family thinks she is a drama queen, she can't help but shine through. The biggest challenge Estella faces as her summer vacation gets underway is Jackson Sherwood, the best friend of her older brother.

Jackson Sherwood exuded charisma from birth. Except for his friend's younger sister Essie, he charms everyone he encounters right away. Jax needs a place to stay after getting dumped, and his closest friend's parents are delighted to oblige. He will try to get along with the irritable Essie in order to express his thanks, which is all he can muster.

Each discovers new things about the other as Essie and Jax settle in together, and a truce gradually develops. Is it possible for the person who irritates you the most to become your closest friend? As it provides an answer, The Stars Burn Bright will take you on an exhilarating voyage.

This charming tale captured my heart. I want a story like that to be in my teen's library. It has a young female heroine who is independent and strong. young guys who understand how to cherish and respect women, as well as how to experience emotions and display vulnerability. Tomalin was able to do so with a lot of romance, tension, and humour.Romance, tension, and laughter abound. All of it was delivered in an age-appropriate manner by Tomalin. This book will be devoured by any teen who like romance.

The Stars Burn Bright is a charming young adult romance with a comforting message of acceptance of oneself. Despite not always feeling like she fits in, Essie is a likeable protagonist with a strong sense of self. Essie is pushed to develop and leave her comfort zone by Jax, a lovely and intriguing individual.

Essie and Jax have a realistic, slow-burning romance. Initially rivals, they gradually come to respect and value one another. Their encounters are brimming with funny banter and touching moments, and you can feel the connection between them.

Additionally, I liked how Tomalin looked into themes of acceptance and self-discovery. Essie learns to accept her distinctive abilities and viewpoints, even if they don't align with what most people expect of her. She also gains the ability to defend herself and her convictions in challenging situations.

Overall, it offers a strong self-acceptance message in a well-written and fun YA romance. a sympathetic and well-rounded protagonist.attractive and sophisticated love interest. A believable and slow-burning relationship.

I suggest it to young adult readers who like swoon-worthy romances with a touch of self-reflection.

The Stars Burn Bright is a dynamic, fun, easy to read contemporary YA story that will have you flipping pages. I love books with multiple POVs and this one was done really well. Essie and Jax have unique voices and approaches to life, and the dynamic between the two of them is excellent as bitterness turns to comradery turns to something more. I love the budding romance, but I love the budding business even more. This isn’t just a story of teenage love and emotions, but of following your dreams, sticking to them even if they don’t seem good enough for your parents or if your friends don’t understand just how good you are at it, or how hard one has to work to achieve said dreams. The language Tomalin uses is approachable and flows beautifully, you kind of feel like you’re talking with a friend and hearing their story, it’s awesome. So, if you like a bit of drama, romance, and contemporary YA, this is the novel for you!

I loved this book so much. It was everything I could hope for in a YA romance. Super sweet, with characters who act their age.

Essie and Jax were such realistic characters, their banter, their activities and the way they communicated and acted around the other characters reminded me of being a teenager myself, in the absolute best way.

Essie was such a fun and feisty chracter, who despite struggling with her confidence at times had enough of it to go out into the world as herself at all times and I admired her a lot for her great attitude on life.

Jax was such a sweetie, and he was so generous and kind, with a little bit of vulnerability that he let shine and it was just perfect. Am I a little bit in love with him in a totally not weird way? Yes.

I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who loves a little bit of sweet romance in their life, and who enjoys YA.

‘The Stars Burn Bright’ is a debut YA novel by Lyndia Tomalin, and it does not disappoint. I am not usually a fan of YA, but as I’ve witnessed through the gram Lyndia sharing her exciting book updates, I knew I had to read it.

Captivated by reliving my high school romance. ‘The Stars Burn Bright’ is well written; I finished it in just over a day. The story was told between the two perspectives of Estella and Jackson; having the ability to read about what is going on in their heads is always exciting for me. You can gather both sides of the story at once. I loved how these two interacted, the banter and laughter reminded me of how I used to act around the boy I fancied.

I look forward to seeing what Lyndia has in store for her next book.

I give ‘The Stars Burn Bright’ 4 stars out of 5

4.5 stars 😊

This book took me a little minute to get into. I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, but there was just something about Jax and Essie that made me want to keep reading. I had to see them together in spite of this Jeremy character.

I hit the 25% mark and I became more obsessed with these two, constantly looking for moments to read another chapter.

The writing was a pleasure to read. It flowed smoothly and easily entertained. The chapters were short, which I love! And the characters were likeable and relatable.

I loved the sweet romance and the will-they/won’t-they pull throughout the book.

If you’re after a light, sweet read that will leave you smiling, then definitely check this one out 😁

What an absolutely fabulous debut from this author.

I don’t read YA lots but as I’ve said before, when I do read them I always love them.

I was around halfway through this book and thought, oh my god, I feel seen, seen as a teenage me. The angst, the does he like me, the I’m just going to go snog this guy because I’m not feeling it from this guy, will I make him jealous, will he care? As previously a teenage girl reading this, you will know exactly what I mean.

Loved this storyline a lot and I really enjoyed Jax and Essie, they were both great characters with so much to give.

Super fast easy read with the perfect amount of pages! We need more books between 250 and 300.

Well done Lynda 👌🏻

Really enjoyed this sweet, teenage/young adult, enemies to more romance with the strong heroine and the oh so gorgeous hero… so much angst, and longing, with heart racing scenes!

Loved the way the story is told from the two points of view and this swept the reader along making it so ‘page turning’ good!!

This review would’ve been five stars but given four stars as I didn’t care for the bad language used throughout… felt the storyline would’ve been excellent without it.

This is my first time reading work by this author and I sincerely hope it won’t be the last!

Another YA Sweet romance novel that made me blush when I read it. I'm so proud of the main character, Essie but also annoyed at the same time. I loved that she was independent and adamant, but also a bit stubborn which leads this story to a "miscommunication trope", again it's always annoying. However, the end was sweet and satisfying after all. The character development was interesting though, nothing much could I say because you just have to pick this book as it's an easy read and will get you smiling all the way through.

This was such an adorable love story between Essie and Jax. I don’t read YA romance much but this was such a beautifully written book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Essie had so much sass and such a great personality. I loved that she had a sewing business and the day that Jax stepped in to help her was so sweet and one of my favourite parts of the book.

Jax was such a good guy and I loved his POV in the book. I will always love a brothers best friend trope and I wish we got to hear how David took the news of Essie and Jax being together.

I highly recommend this book whether you read YA romance often or not.

⭐️Dual POV
⭐️Brothers best friend (LOVE ATM)
⭐️Slight enemies to lovers (YAY A FAV)
⭐️Kiwi Author (LOVE THAT!)

Essie and Jax were the best main characters. I enjoyed seeing the vulnerability in both of them, and watching them grow and overcome it. I wish I had this to read when I was 17! I really liked how strong Essie was, and I liked the message it portrayed about speaking up / speaking your mind. When Essie thought everyone would be annoyed at her for speaking her mind about a guy putting his hands up her skirt - they felt the opposite and thought she was strong. I will definitely be reccomding this to my sister when she is a little older, and my teen cousins!

This was such a great coming of age YA romance read! I loved how Estella was strong in her own right, but still had her vulnerabilities, and Jax was such a kind and caring guy, who also had his own stuff going on. They really did bring out the best in each other and it was so nice to watch their relationship grow. The characters were authentic and that was the best part - they both made mistakes, but they were able to own up to them and that showed great growth. I really enjoyed this book!
