Detective Roger LeCarre #2

Murder at Crime Manor

Rate this book
The manor house murder mystery as you've never seen it...Detective Roger LeCarre is back!

Detective Roger LeCarre. Scourge of crime. Guardian of Exeter. Amateur squash player. And now, party guest at Powderham, the manor house owned by mysterious billionaire tech genius Eli Quartz.

It is a small and unconventional gathering: the Bishop, a fading radio star, a desperate aristocrat, the aging butler and his absurdly beautiful daughter - and Detective Roger LeCarre. Then a snowstorm blows in and the group realise they are trapped.

And when, completely against expectations for this kind of situation, someone winds up dead, it's obvious who must solve the crime. Obvious, but for the fact the murder weapon was in Detective Roger LeCarre's hand, and the body was at his feet...

From the creator of BBC2's Martin Fishback comes the second Detective Roger LeCarre crime fiction parody, daring to go where so many other crime novels have gone before.

Absolutely hilarious. Especially when listening to the audiobook. Didn't even spot the product placement but I have a proper craving for a KitKat chunky for some reason 😂😂

The world’s greatest detective, Roger LeCarre, gets invited to a fancy dinner at a Manor House, along with the great and good of Exeter. He then finds himself trapped there as a blizzard blocks all the roads. And then theres a murder, Roger will solve it, but the victim lies at Roger’s feet and he’s holding the murder weapon. Roger has a bit of a problem.

Completely bonkers and so funny. The Detective Roger LeCarre series breaks the mould of crime writing.

I enjoy a mystery or crime novel once in a while, but this one (#2 in its series) is the first I’ve read that’s labeled as a crime fiction parody. Once I warmed up to the story, after the first murder occurred, was when I decided to read on. Detective Roger La Carre is a superb detective, but not someone I’d want to spend time with.

The sequence of events is fast paced and shocking, and I’m not going to betray any of it to you. I’d like to see this particular mystery on Mystery on PBS. It’s a bit of an odd mix to have so much horror and tragedy going on blended with humor. I suppose the Poirot mysteries are a bit like that, too.

Another fantastic book in this series. Made me laugh throughout and was actually a decent, engaging story. Read it over one weekend as it’s a nice length and I didn’t want to put it down. It’s maybe a little obvious in places but even when you think you’ve guessed it something else is thrown in which I thought was a great way to make this both funny and actually a decent crime story.

That was a great book. I really wasn't expecting it to be so consistently funny. The author did an awesome job reading it for the audiobook. I really enjoyed listening to the characters speaking like they were supposed to sound.

A silly, well plotted romp.

The narrator is Fergus's very funny Youtube character, Martin Fishback who is hilarious in small, Youtube doses.

I've only got into Fergus's Youtube channel in the past month and I think I'm now overexposed.

Unfortunately I didn't like this book as much as the first one.

The narrator and the protagonist, both very egotistical and small minded, together felt a bit like a pale imitation of Alan Partridge.

Disappointingly, not quite as perfectly crafted and on point as the first instalment. Still funny in parts and would read another.

I have no idea how to rate this. It’s so ridiculous it’s funny. But it feels like fluff. I think it’s supposed to be funny. I say read other reviews before reading.

Another funny one from Ferguson Craig. Story line a bit outrageous, but funny & book well written and funny.

Soooo bad! Trying too hard to be funny without actually being funny. I only finished this because it was for a book club. I thought about DNF’ing so many times.

I know it's a parody. I get it. But the sexism was pushed to such a height and the detective's self regard to such an extreme that it set my teeth on edge

it’s ok

The book is entertaining enough. I liked the blend of cozy mystery and humor. The mystery plot was silly, but entertaining. The humor could use some work.

Much like the first — enormously campy, satirical to the point of spoof, but still highly readable.

This kind of traditional murder mystery is probably my least favourite genre. But Detective Roger Le Carre is always fun, and there are lots of laugh out loud moments here. The sex scene is a classic.
