The Warrior’s Reluctant Wife is the first book in the Warriors Of Wales series of historical romances.

The story is set in early medieval Wales and opens with an arranged marriage uniting two families in hopes of strengthening the Welsh nobles in their fight to remain independent from the English king.

Rhianon and Peredur both enter the marriage with different thoughts and fears, but they must find a common ground if they are to survive in a cold outpost castle where the reception feels hostile.

The coastal castle setting for this story was very intriguing with the eerie calls of the sea creatures. The romance story arc was in line with similar historical romances, but the era and Welsh setting made it memorable. There were quite a few Welsh character names to get the tongue around which were a bit tricky for me.

A good start to the new series.

I am back at it with another entry in my backlist read through of Lissa Morgan's books. I've already read book two of this series so I was familiar with the world of our characters but I was excited to get to know Peredur and Rhianon since they feature prominently in the backstory for our MCs in The Warrior's Forbidden Maiden.

We open with Rhianon, the only daughter of a Welsh lord, on the day of her second forced marriage in 1157. Rhianon was only married to her first husband for two weeks before he was killed and now she is being ordered into this marriage to broker an alliance between her father's house and Peredur's father Eilyr. Peredur never wanted to get married or have children but the choice was between him or his brutal brother and he couldn't bear to see Rhianon married to a man who would hurt her. Peredur is actually Eilyr's adopted son. His father was a Flemish warrior who assaulted his Welsh mother and she died giving birth to Peredur. Peredur has a reputation as a brutal warrior with no heart, which terrifies Rhianon who grew up with an abusive father and was previously married to a cruel man. But when Peredur begins to show that he is not at all like his reputation, Rhianon doesn't know what to do next.

The Warrior's Reluctant Wife deals with some heavy themes. Peredur was the product of a sexual assault, his mother died in childbirth and his grandmother ostracized and emotionally abused him. If it weren't for his adoptive father, Peredur probably wouldn't have survived childhood. Rhianon's father was physically and emotionally abusive to his wife and children. His wife clearly had severe mental health issues as a result and her children were left to fend for themselves against a tyrant. And Rhianon's first husband wasn't much better. She believes that men are dangerous and not to be trusted as a result of her experiences.

This book is a slow burn. Normally with a marriage of convenience, there is a consummation situation pretty early on. But both of our main characters are terrified to touch the other, just for different reasons. It takes them almost the entire book to work together, past their issues and decide to commit to their future. There were some moments when I wanted to shake both characters and tell them to get over their nonsense, but then I realized this book takes place over a pretty short amount of time and I needed to adjust my expectations for character development!

Overall, I really enjoyed The Warrior's Reluctant Wife. 4 stars.

Wow. After reading "The Warrior's Reluctant Wife" from Alissa Morgan, I needed some time to sort out my thoughts. This is a historical romance set in Wales in 1157. Note: while mostly not on page the characters experienced and reflect on some heavy trauma. TW: abuse (physical, sexual), war, killing.

Between the MCs there was a lot of pining and yearning and angst, and I just loved the writing style of the author. The book is told in a head-hopping style. I enjoyed the subtle shift in POV mid-scene, although I did have to adjust to the shifts at first.

I definitely recommend this if you are looking for a slow burn historical romance (outside of the drawing rooms of Regency or Victorian England), dual POV (head-hopping), arranged marriage with forced proximity. Spicey moments are there, but it takes a long time to get there. Morgan's writing style really made the slow burn payoff worth it for me.

The marriage between FMC Rhianon and MMC Peredur was arranged as a strategic alliance between two warring chieftains, at the command of their prince. They’re forced to move to a castle by the sea so Peredur can be a lord to that region and it’s there they have to try to overcome their past to forge a future together.

Peredur and Rhianon are sooooo attracted to each other, but frightened to be vulnerable and open up to one another because of their trauma as children. I really enjoyed how they gradually (emphasis on GRADUALLY) opened up but being as this is a slow burn romance, their opening up took a LONG time. At one point Peredur's horse, Rhianon's lady's maid, and Rhianon's uncle were all trying to do some matchmaking to bring the couple together, and I was wondering if this HEA was ever going to happen.

Peredur was such a big cinnamon roll when it came to Rhianon. His POV is so sweet, however frustrating at times,  because he is so gentle and caring with her, even if he gets in his own way. I just wanted to hug Rhianon, because of her crappy abusive dad, abused and emotionally absent mom, and abusive former hubby really messed skewed her perception of what makes a happy family.

The Warrior's reluctant wife was a quick and easy to read romance with characters I couldn't help but root for. I particularly liked Rhianon, who has a lot of strength and is very spirited despite all she has been through. Though she is afraid of her new husband, she doesn't show her fear. Peredur, on the other hand, seemed to be a good man, and although he had a reputation as a hardened warrior, there were few glimpses to show how he had earned his reputation. I didn't fully buy into it. I did not enjoy how the topic of pregnancy was handled. Peredur wasn't really ready to have a child with Rhianon, and in the end, she really pushed him to get her way. Given there was contraception mentioned in the story, this didn't make much sense to me. They could have used that until they both were ready? This left me a bit frustrated in the end. Overall, I did enjoy the story, especially the setting and time period.

‘The Warrior's Reluctant Wife’ tells the story of Rhianon, a recently widowed woman who has no desire to be tied to another man after her tumultuous past. However, due to political reasons, she is forced into an arranged marriage with Peredur ab Eilyr, a feared warrior lord.

The author does a commendable job of delving into the emotions and fears of Rhianon. Her reluctance to marry again is understandable given her abusive childhood and previous marriage. This aspect adds depth to her character and helps the reader empathize with her.

Peredur, on the other hand, is portrayed as a formidable warrior with a strong reputation. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that there is more to him than meets the eye. The author skillfully reveals a passionate and caring side to Peredur, making him an intriguing and rather sexy character.

The chemistry between Rhianon and Peredur is palpable and sizzles off the pages. As they navigate their arranged marriage, their relationship develops organically and evolves into something unexpected and beautiful. The author brilliantly captures the growth of their love and the challenges they face along the way.

The plot of the book revolves around the strategic alliance that Rhianon and Peredur's marriage aims to achieve. While this adds a layer of complexity to the story, it is the development of the characters' relationship that truly shines. The pacing is well done, allowing for the necessary build-up of tension and emotions.

Overall, this was a captivating tale of unexpected love. The characters are well-developed, and their journey is filled with passion, challenges, and growth. The author's storytelling skills keep the reader engaged from start to finish. If you enjoy romance novels with depth and intricate relationships, this book is worth picking up.

This wonderful read had completely packed up my summer holidays! Who would have thought that I would be so engrossed by it?

Rhianon knows after being a widow that her father will marry her off again but she has no idea her new husband conceals mystery beneath his icy warrior. From the beginning, I had this thought that Peredur would be cold towards Rhianon but he isn’t. On the contrary, he is so thoughtful, caring and affectionate meanwhile Rhianon is still reluctant to do her duty as a wife after what she experienced. With their unexplored passion and married life, I kept wondering who would be surrendering first.

Moreover the unrevealed mystery of Peredur’s past also kept me wonder what had happened and why he had been called heartless. Turning the pages over pages, I was dumbfounded by Peredur’s revelation, how is that possible? Despite their issue, I was thoroughly blown away by history of Medieval Wales and the morloi. It was so beautifully written and deeply researched. What annoyed me a lot was why I couldn’t pronounce Welsh very well. I wish I had learnt Welsh before reading it!

Arranged marriage trope is my cup of tea and Lissa Morgan cleverly packed it with wonderful history of Medieval Wales. I so look forward to Llywelyn’s story!

I’ve become such an unexpected fan of Mills & Boon Historical novels over the past couple of years so I am always delighted to be asked to review one of their new releases. This is my first book by Lissa Morgan but it definitely won’t be the last as I thoroughly enjoyed The Warrior’s Reluctant Wife.

Set in a remote area of Wales during the early medieval period, this is a bleak and harsh landscape ruled by tribal leaders, which breeds harsh and unforgiving men. Both Peredur and Rhianon have experienced childhoods at the hands of such men, which have made them wary and untrusting. Thrown together in an arranged marriage to seal an important political alliance and sent to a border outpost to guard their liege lord’s frontier, they have only each other to rely on, but they are virtual strangers. How will they make this strained alliance work?

The whole premise of the book drew me in and was explored and unfolded with expert skill by the author, who has created two compelling characters and a fascinating relationship within the pages of this book. It is hard to see from the outset how these two damaged souls can come to an understanding, but circumstances ensure that their passions are ignited in a story which builds and builds with tension to a rewarding climax.

The awe-inspiring but forbidding backdrop is an important part of the story and I really enjoyed the way the author incorporated historical fact in with the fiction. It is clear that she loves and is inspired by the landscape and the history of this area – an area I know a little – and this passion cannot help but light up the novel and bring an extra dimension to the story. I found the whole things captivating and read it in a very short space of time because I could not put it down.

An exciting voice for anyone who is a fan of this genre, and maybe even for someone who isn’t but it thinking about dipping a toe in. I think there is a tendency to think that these books lack substance and are easy to write fluff. This is absolutely not the case, they take a great deal of skill and are often filled with fascinating historical detail and this is a perfect example. It is a wonderful read.

This 1100s medieval arranged marriage romance set in remote Wales is a fast paced historical romance. These two have a very traumatic past on top of getting sent to protect the lands by being the outpost in a cold, dark, lonely remote castle. Rhianon grew up under a horrible father and then husband - she is now getting forced to marry a new man Peredur who has a reputation. They grow warm and understanding towards one another until it's more. We get fun side characters with her uncle and maid. This book was a joy to read and couldn’t put it down.

You can tell the author did her homework and made reading even more fun. This was well researched and loved all the extra Welsh parts thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for more of this series from Morgan.

This book tells the story of Rhianon and Peredur, who are forced to marry because of their fathers' rivalry. Both have had difficult experiences that make it hard for them to trust others. Even though Rhianon tries to be independent and not a victim, she takes risks to avoid being controlled by Peredur. Peredur agreed to marry Rhianon to protect her from his abusive brother, but he never planned to fall in love with her.

Their relationship gradually develops as they learn to trust each other and share their fears and pasts. The Welsh setting adds a unique flavor to the story, and the author's attention to detail makes it easy to imagine the world. The other characters, like Rhianon's cruel father and Peredur's brother, play important roles in bringing Rhianon and Peredur together.

Overall, this book is a great read about two people who overcome their pasts and find love in a strategic marriage while discovering a mystery about the castle's guards.

He married her to save her from his half brother.

I enjoyed this medieval book, set in Wales. Rhianon is a widow (she was only married for two weeks, but he was an awful husband in that time) forced into a political marriage to Peredur. Peredur is very honorable (a product of a Flemish father who assualted his mother) and though a warrior, very kind and compassionate.

Their marriage is off to a rocky start with Rhianon mistrustful and resigned.
Peredur is a virgin who is married with temptation for his new wife surprising them both. They have a lot of outside forces to contend with, too.
Recommend. I really liked Peredur, and fournd him to be a well constructed hero.

Set against the unique backdrop of twelfth century Wales, this book follows the arranged marriage of Rihanon and Peredur as they try to move on from their traumatic childhoods and find love with each other.
I really really enjoyed the setting of this, as Wales is usually a place forgotten within literature, especially that of Historical Romance. The novel was highly detailed, yet kept a steady flow which made it an enjoyable and gripping read. This was something new for me as I usually only tend to read Regency romances, but I enjoyed the bleakness and emptiness of the landscape within this one, as well as the conflicting emotions and trying lives of the protagonists.
The only downside is that there are many Welsh names which was confusing, but that is an error on my part, not the writer's.
Well worth checking out if you can.

Thank you to Mills and Boon and Lissa Morgan for letting me have an ARC copy of The Warrior’s Reluctant Wife.

I rubbed my hands with glee getting the approval for this book because I’m a sucker for arranged marriage tropes in historical romances. It’s like an unwritten pact between the author of such tropes and the reader that the story will put you through the wringer, and dish out plenty of hate, avoidance, and friction before a big HEA. Lissa Morgan delivered all the fronts for this book! I could not put it down and curled up to read in one sitting. I read it again as I couldn’t believe it was as good as it first seemed.

The description of the writing delivers poignantly on the beauty and wildness of the Welsh landscape, where danger lurks hidden in the valleys and mists of this ancient land. The troubles and strifes of medieval life are interwoven with the romance story showing the difficulties women faced in this male-dominated society and the dangers to their lives as property of their male kin. The story gets a little inventive about contraception, but while we can’t say for sure what women did about this shadows on this front with a lot of certainty.

Peredur made my toes curl – a dark, broody knight with a tragic past and a ferocious reputation as a violent warrior. Only looks can be deceiving as beneath the conjecture and armour there is a good man with limited experience of love. Rhiannon has a soul of steel and is spirited under her facade of a dutiful daughter. She’s learned how men of her time can use their women and she is keen to avoid being under the heel of another abusive man like her father. Only everything she expects from Peredur surprises her as she learns to live with the man behind the warrior. There are surprises for both about each other as they get to know their new spouse.

The subplot gets a little dark, but it’s a gripping detail into the politics of Welsh culture and the constant upheaval of the Welsh princes. A clever infusion of history to up the ante on the romance and bring to life the wider tensions of the time. I can’t wait for the next book in the series of the Warriors of Wales.

The Warrior’s Reluctant Wife is the first book in a new series, set in 12th century Wales. There are some Welsh phrases and the names can be a little intimidating if you do not know Welsh, but honestly it does not detract from this delightful story in any way.

Neither of the main characters, Peredur or Rhianon, were keen to get married, but as an arranged marriage, Peredur agreed because he wanted to protect Rhianon from his errant brother, and Rhianon had no choice, no say in the matter, as was expected of women in medieval times. Their chemistry is palpable from the moment they marry, and the way in which they find themselves drawn to one another adds to the story. Peredur the warrior with a tough reputation is actually gentle, sensitive and caring, and Rhianon after a childhood and previous marriage of abusive control is so much stronger and more determined than would be expected of someone with such a background. Their characters off-set one another to perfection.

This is a delicately styled slow burn of a romance, which keeps building and really captures the imagination. Beautifully written, I was captivated by the tension of the romance and the uncertainty of the political situation.

The descriptions of the outpost, with the mysterious, haunting Morloi (seals) on the beach below the cliffs, had a bleakness that really set the scene of a remote location with nothing around it but danger. What locals live in the area are also suspicious and secretive, which amplifies the tension. There is also a mystery about the previous occupants of the outpost, which needs resolution.

This enthralling story of an arranged marriage turned marriage of equals is one that I was sad to reach the end, because I was so invested in the characters of Peredur and Rhianon. It was a captivating medieval romance that I can highly recommend.

Good book about two people brought together in a marriage arranged as a strategic alliance between two warring Welsh chieftains. Neither Rhianon nor Peredur wants to marry. Rhianon's father is cruel and violent, and her late husband was no better. Her new husband is a warrior with the reputation of being heartless. At the same time, Peredur never intended to marry but agreed to the marriage to protect Rhianon from being married to his cruel younger brother.

I enjoyed this slow-burn story of two people whose traumatic childhoods have created deep-seated trust issues. Though Rhianon has been forced to marry, she refuses to be a victim and vows never to show her fear. Instead, she tends to be defiant in her refusal to be controlled, sometimes taking stupid risks rather than accepting Peredur's strictures. Peredur's early childhood was heartbreaking, with those who should have loved him mistreating him instead. I ached for him and the treatment he received from his grandmother. It was a good day for him when he was taken in by Eilyr and raised as a beloved son.

After their marriage, Rhianon and Peredur leave for a remote castle to watch over their border with a rival prince. Their arrival at the castle begins with the mystery of why its garrison has disappeared and what the locals know about it. Peredur's time is spent preparing the castle and his men for possible war.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Rhianon and Peredur develop. Peredur's plan to never marry and have children becomes problematic when he finds his attraction to Rhianon becoming harder to resist. Rhianon is dismayed that she is attracted to Peredur because she expects him to be like the other men she has known. But for all his reputation as being heartless, Peredur is a kind and compassionate man. I loved how he treated her with understanding and respect and how that helped overcome her fears. As Rhianon began to trust Peredur, she saw past the fierce warrior to the vulnerable man underneath. The explanation of his heartless reputation was not what I expected. I liked seeing them slowly open up about their pasts and fears and realize what they had together. The epilogue was great and showed what is possible when fears are faced together.

Secondary characters were well-developed and crucial to the storyline. I ached for Rhianon after the descriptions of her cruel and violent father and her abused and negligent mother. Peredur's brother was a nasty piece of work, and I figured him for trouble from the beginning. I loved Rhianon's uncle Edwin and her maid Esyllt, who played parts in bringing Rhianon and Peredur together.

I loved the Welsh setting. The author's attention to detail made the story richer and events easier to visualize. I loved the description of the castle, the surrounding area, and the story of the morloi. It only reinforces my desire to visit Wales and learn more about my heritage.

This is about an arranged marriage in which the widowed Rhianon is extremely unhappy about this upcoming union. After-all she was brought up by an abusive father and her dead last husband was exactly the same! So marriage is the very last thing she desires as to her it only means she will be physically harmed by another man.

Due to a wanted alliance she is being forced to marry Peredur ab Eilyr who is a warrior as their father are two fighting chieftains. So this is a forced marriage of convenience as she has no opinion that counts and again she is being used for her family's so called duty. Rhianon fears it will be another violent man that will either physically or mentally abuse her. Perhaps she will get a bit of both as she has no idea but they usually go hand in hand!

A breathtaking story of a marriage of convenience from two enemy fathers but whose children might possibly discover love. A lovely book of how love is the most powerful healer of all!

This novel details all that this couple had to go through with so many obstacles with so much hurt and abuse from their past. They both have a difficult time believing in trust, caring and love. Even though both have scars from their childhood they soon put their armor aside and take the road to happiness and love. As it was their only way to salvation and to a happy future and life together.

Peredur is the exact opposite of what Rhianon was expecting; however he too came from an abusive childhood and never wanted to marry or have children. All due to his traumatic past as they soon realize they have more in common than they first realized.

Rhianon and Peredur became like a moth to a flame and only felt protective desire and love but will it be enough? Can others destroy their tender hearts and new found love? Even though this marriage was very difficult to begin with, they soon realize they can change their future on their own terms. Can these two broken people come together and heal? Can they open their hearts to trust each other and discover love? Read and discover their fate.

Lissa Morgan is a new author that had me so awe inspired by this awe inspiring story. It was about two people who had so much betrayal and abuse for a good part of their lives starting at such a young age. Definitely an emotional read that I could not put down! It was both clever and brilliant but definitely have a few tissues or hankies nearby. Readers with soft hearts will definitely need them. I am looking forward to the next read by this extraordinary author whose both I absolutely loved!

When recently widowed Rhianon is ordered to marry Peredur ab Eilyr, she has no choice but to comply, however, she refuses to be a biddable bride, especially to another warrior. She will marry him, but after enduring a brutal childhood and an equally brutal, yet thankfully short marriage, she doesn’t trust men, especially not one like Peredur, a warrior lord with a fierce reputation and who is whispered to have no heart. No, she can’t trust him, despite his kindness to her or her uncle’s admonishment not to believe the things said about him. She is sure that he will eventually show his true colors and it will be a cold day in hell before she yields to him. However, it becomes clear that she is wrong about Peredur, can she overcome her fears and open her heart to him? And more importantly, will he let her?

Known as Peredur Galon Gudd – Peredur of the Hidden Heart, for good reason, just not the one most assume. Peredur was taken in by Eilyr as a young boy and raised as a beloved son, he strives to make his adoptive father proud, and even though he never wanted to marry, he agreed to wed Rhianon when Lord Rhys ap Gruffudd, Prince of Deneubrath and their overlord ordered the marriage between the warring families. He married her to save her from his brutal younger brother, but he plans to keep theirs a marriage in name only. They travel to Castell Abereinion to man the fortress, but when they arrive it is clear that trouble is brewing, starting with the fact that no one is there to greet them. Peredur must find out what is afoot a task made all the harder when his unwanted wife tempts him as no woman ever has!

This was a great start to a new series! The book is well-written, nicely paced, and filled with intrigue. Rhianon and Peredur are both wounded souls who have been ill-used by those who should have loved them, it has made them both wary of trusting others, but they both have good hearts and slowly they begin to open their hearts to the other – but that doesn’t mean that their demons won’t still rear their heads and cause a bit of heartache. Throw in a bit of intrigue, treason, murder, suppressed desire, sassy servants, and evil relatives and you have an excellent story! I loved this book and can’t wait for the next installment!!

I was thrilled to visit mediaeval Wales, and this time I found myself in the 12th Century and learning more about Rhianon and Peredur. Similarly, to Lissa’s other books, there is a marriage of convenience, but that is the only real similarity between her earlier novels. Having already been used to gain an advantage, Rhianon is married off by her violent father to another potential ally’s son. Despite understanding the reasoning behind the match, Peredur is reluctant to explore the opportunities of married life and remains a respectful distance from his bride.
There is a high volume of romance wrapped up in this tale as Rhianon’s strong will and Peredur’s resolve battle to take the upper hand. Rhianon is determined to get under Peredur’s skin as she begins to see that he is a far different character than his power-mad brother.
The descriptions of the sights and sounds around the castle and seashore generated a desire to visit Wales and explore the areas mentioned. I have never been but believe that a trip may well be on the cards in the future. I’d be fibbing if I didn’t acknowledge that the sea lions are a huge draw.
Most importantly, I want to acknowledge the writing of Lissa Morgan. Each one of her books, and particularly this one, has pulled me right in and left me reading into the wee small hours. I can honestly say that her style and subject matter are a firm favourite of mine.
If you like your heroes to be handsome, rugged and evolved and your heroines to be feisty and independent, I can heartily recommend Lissa’s writing. There are few damsels in distress and only a more acceptable level of misogyny. These were different times, yet I do believe that there has always been a strong undercurrent of equality, flowing through the ages. I mean, have you heard of Joan of Arc and Boudicca?

Those who know me and follow my reviews I’m sure will understand why I chose this book and why I begged the author to send me an ARC… It’s a marriage of convenience, my beloved trope! And wow, how I loved it! Trope aside, which by the way was perfectly developed, just as I like it, I discovered a gorgeous new author who I vow to follow very closely from now on. Her writing is simply beautiful, with gorgeous descriptions of places (I so want to visit Wales now!) and powerful characters that will stay with me for a long time! Peredur and Rhianon are two broken people with horrible families who are forced to marry to forge a convenient alliance, but their attraction starts to grow despite their mutual distrust. Their love and their struggle is heartrending and compelling and this beautiful book is filled with feeling, angst and real romance!
