Cedar is a unique story incredibly well told.

Without spoilers it’s hard for me to really explain how creatively the author pulled me into a world where I felt as though I knew everything and nothing all at the same time. There are only a couple of main characters but several voices - each with a point of view and well developed background. I could “see” every single detail and understood the dynamics in every relationship without pages of exhaustive narrative. That’s beyond impressive.

It’s a whirlwind that goes so much deeper than the casual read I was expecting. There’s nothing laid back about Cedar, it hits the ground running and never lets up.

Read Cedar. Get your friends to read Cedar. Then talk it out and I promise you’ll be even more invested than when you were actively reading it.

Spellbinding.

This was such a fun read, Katie brings her audience right into the story as it is already underway. As the tale opens, Jillian’s voice presents as a character who knows the reader will catch up, that the unfolding of events explains the backstory and feeling swept up in something is part of the ride.

Set in Vancouver, and with references to additional B.C. locales, I enjoyed the familiarity as a reader born and raised in the same geography. I could see the characters moving through their story and it felt more real as a result.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

This book was GOOD. In my opinion, it has all the makings of a top-tier psychological thriller: 1) You don't see the twists coming, and yet you realize when they do happen that you absolutely should have seen them coming based on some of the hints the author left. 2) The writing is gripping and page-turning. (The last 40%, in particular, I devoured in one sitting.) The story is suspenseful and reads like a dream (or maybe a nightmare?) and if you're comfortable reading about heavy-ish mental health topics like grief and mental institutions, absolutely worth the ride.

Katie Bieksa's second novel does not disappoint! She once again shows her strength as a writer; just when you think you know where the story is going, she surprises you with an unexpected plot twist. Bieksa's use of wordplay creates sympathy for the main character while simultaneously giving the reader a sense of melancholy for her plight. Equally a psychological thriller, you become drawn to the main character's journey so much so that you cannot put the book down because you want to know the truth of Cedar's story. Her writing feels effortless and the story moves smoothly to its unexpected conclusion. Cedar is a joy to read start to finish!

I found Cedar to be an emotionally powerful story. Katie Bieksa has created a cast of characters that are engaging, complex, and multi-dimensional. I found myself invested in the lives and struggles of these characters, which makes the book hard to put down. Cedar is a novel not to be missed.

Another great read by Katie Bieksa. Cedar is a wild ride that left me guessing, and second-guessing, the whole time! Bieksa proves once again that she knows how to write “real” characters that bring you into their world and force you think and feel.
