I loved this cookbook with its super cute photos of Japanese desserts. I have been attracted by Japanese treats for a while now, and this book taught me more about Japanese culture and customs. I am still intimidated by the recipes and I don't feel ready to jump into one just yet because I am far from being a decent baker. BUT I am planning on purchasing this book and place it on my coffee table since I know it will be a conversation starter every time I have a friends visiting. Go get yours now!

I love how the book is organized. It is Japanese desserts, non Japanese desserts, then anime inspired desserts. It is a fun way to organize the dishes and I cannot wait to try every single one of them. Super excited for this to come out!

Bake anime is a treat, literally and figuratively. It is just as beautiful on the inside as the outside. There are plenty of mouthwatering and inciting pictures throughout. Combined with the bright cover and adorable illustrations, I was immediately fascinated. But upon diving a little deeper, I found the writing to be a perfect match for book filled with such sweetness. The author’s love and passion for both baking and anime come through clearly in every recipe and anecdote. The recipes themselves are clear and concise, and very easy to follow. In addition, each section gives you interesting background on the anime from which the recipe is inspired and also on the larger cultural context of the food itself within the real world (or sometimes a fantasy world). You can tell that there was a lot of time and love put into this cookbook. I recommend reading through it, especially the introduction, which talks about the author’s baking journey and the history of desserts in Japan.
Far too often, people with allergies must settle for less, but not here! Each recipe was clearly marked with dietary information (gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free etc.) and possible substitutions. As someone who can’t eat gluten, this was extremely helpful and timesaving. The author took the time to make gluten-free variations and substitutions whenever possible, so that I can enjoy the recipes too!
One thing that really annoys me with some cookbooks is that you find a recipe you like, go to the store, buy all the ingredients, get home, start cooking, only to find out you need some special piece of equipment that you don’t have! All that time and effort, wasted! (And yes, I know that this problem could easily be solved by actually reading the recipe before going to the store and buying everything, but I’m not a perfect person and I don’t pretend to be). But with this book, I don’t have to worry about that at all! On the right-hand side of every recipe, there is a stats column that tells you how long the recipe takes and any special equipment needed to execute such a masterpiece. It’s very easy for my lizard brain to see and I truly appreciate that.
What’s great about this cookbook is that it’s for everyone, not just anime fans. Of course, anime fans can appreciate trying to recreate some of their favorite recipes. But I also think this would be a great book for any baker who’d like to expand their repertoire and try some new and creative dishes.

“Bake Anime,” by Emily J. Bushman, is a delightful cookbook. I enjoyed reading the introduction and hearing an abridged history of sugar in Japan. I also loved the perspective of Ms. Bushman and hearing how she became interested in cooking anime inspired dishes. I, myself, have wanted to eat many of the dishes I see in anime, so I could relate to Ms. Bushman’s experiences, and reading about the disappointment of the strawberry shortcake was really interesting.

The cookbook starts out with going over specific ingredients that are common in the recipes and by going over the different baking tools that many of the recipes call for. I love those features, the cookbooks I used growing up didn’t ever feature useful generalized baking or cooking information that related to the recipes.

The pictures in this cookbook are incredible. I was salivating the entire time I flipped through the book. It was incredibly nostalgic for me to see the Stamped Cookies from “Sailor Moon Supers: The Movie,” I watched that movie so many times as a kid, and I know I tried to make cookies like Ami did, but the bottom of the cup I used wasn’t as effective as I’d hoped. I will be trying that again now, with the moon cake stamps that are used in the recipe (as opposed to the bottom of a drinking glass).

There are some small details that I think give this cookbook extra flavor. The recipes have little tidbits of information on the side; some of them are tips for the baking process, some of them are substitution options, there are serving or storage tips, and there are even interesting food facts. Those little side notes make the recipes more accessible and drew me into looking at the recipes more closely.

I’m a very picky eater and I want to make and eat most of the items featured in the cookbook. I work full time, so I chose to make one of the recipes with a shorter baking time. My family helped me make the recipe. We made the Daigaku Imo recipe, which features satsumaimo, a Japanese sweet potato. We didn’t have time to check the closest Japanese story for satsumaimo, so we used American sweet potatoes instead. They turned out really well!

The recipe took less than an hour to make, and the time in the cookbook said 30 minutes - so that lined up. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow. We enjoyed the crunchiness and soft texture of the sweet potato. It was thoroughly flavored.

My brother loved the Daigaku Imo so much that he wrote me a description. This is that description: “Sweet, tastes like the joy I would experience if I were a character in an anime. Addictingly sensual to the tongue, fun in its light and free texture, tastes like a treat minus the sugar. Crunchy, suggestively sweet and salty.”

The Daigaku Imo was a success, and I can’t wait to try the other recipes in this book. I have my eye on the Ichigo Daifuku, and I have a vacation in a few weeks - that may be the perfect time to make it. This cookbook has a wonderful design, and the recipes look amazing! I’ve already made one of them, and it tasted great. I’m definitely buying some extra copies to give as gifts to the bakers in my life.

Bake Anime is a fun (and admittedly slightly nerdy) tutorial guide and recipe collection for anime adjacent baking by Emily Bushman, and a thematic sister volume to 2020's Cook Anime . I couldn't see any overlap in the editing/production staff, but they have a very similar vibe, although different authors. Released 8th Nov 2022 by Simon & Schuster on their Element imprint, it's 160 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.

I liked the layout here. It's lighthearted and whimsical but well written and a perfectly serviceable cookbook in its own right. The introduction includes pantry lists, equipment, and some of the author's own background as a fan of anime and Japanese culture, followed by chapters arranged thematically: Japanese desserts, western desserts, and desserts based on specific characters.

The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only, with a metric/SI conversion table in the appendices. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. Each recipe has a heading with the dish's appearance in a specific anime show/episode.

Well written and organized, this could be a fun addition to the cooking repertoire. It would also lend itself very well to fans of meal planning or once-a-week-cooking. Most of these recipes make several servings which could easily be used for a week's lunch planning. I got out of the habit of buying food at the cafe at work during the pandemic and these recipes have provided good mileage for avoiding boring lunches at work for me, as well as adding a lot of fun to my cooking.

Five stars. This would absolutely star in conjunction with an anime binge watching party with friends. Highly recommended for fans of anime or anime/manga culture. I could see this also being a good choice for a reluctant cook, to get them into the kitchen and making food.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Thank you to Netgally and the publisher for providing me with an eARC of this book, however all thoughts an opinions are my own.

I'll be honest, I don't have access to a lot of the required ingredients to make the delicious treats in this book. Believe it or not I currently live in a country where Amazon doesn't even deliver. All that being said, this book mostly just made me so hungry that I wanted to find a way to get all the ingredients I need. It was fun reliving some of the shows that I watched when I was younger and remembering some of the food that was in them. I loved Cardcaptor Sakura and the Nerikiri pictured is both beautiful and mouth watering. All of the pictures are gorgeous. They make the food appear so appetizing and there is no way mine will look anything like it, but still beautiful. As a side note, The Cowboy Bebop Corgi Bread Buns are the cutest. I'm not sure I would be able to eat them.

Overall, I would recommend this for anime fans who always get hungry watching anime and want to try to make the recipes for themselves. Readers not interested in anime, but interested in Japanese deserts would find some good information in here too. Even though the recipes are related to a particular show, you don't have to have watched and enjoyed the show to find value in the recipes. Just be prepared to be drooling over the book the entire time you read it.

Thank you to Simon Element and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

When I saw the adorable cover and read the title, I knew that I needed to add this to my TBR list right away! As a huge anime nerd, I've always been a fan of anime food. Now, I would learn how to make it myself? Sign me up!

Bake Anime by Emily J Bushman is an absolutely adorable cookbook where readers can learn how to create the delicious desserts from their favorite animes. According to the description, recipes include: "Nerikiri from Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card" and "Ohagi from Demon Slayer." Doesn't that make you excited? What are you waiting for?

Overall, Bake Anime is the cookbook of my dreams and would make the perfect gift for the cook or anime fan in your life. Although anime fans will appreciate this book most of all, I think non-anime cooks can enjoy this cookbook as well. One highlight of this book are the gorgeous photos and anime-style drawings of the desserts. I was salivating just looking at them. My favorite one would have to be the Hello Kitty tarts, which looked so cute! If you're intrigued by the description, I I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in November!

5 mouth-watering, always-wanted-to-make-this, anime food stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Element, S&S/Simon Element for providing a digital ARC for review!

This one is for those of us who read or watched anime/manga growing up and always thought "Wow, that looks delicious.... I wish I could MAKE that!" This cookbook.. is EXACTLY that. And some of my DREAM anime/manga recipes WERE IN HERE! Anime/manga really does have the most delicious food, it's true.

I loved the focus on the most imaginative desserts in this cookbook. There were cakes, meringues, pastries, sweets galore...! I was particularly excited over the little mochi zodiac animals [from a certain anime I was obsessed with growing up~!]. It brought back nostalgia and new discovery all at once, and I definitely can't wait to try my hand at some of these beautiful creations!

I recommend this to the anime/manga fan in your life who ALSO happens to love baking/cooking. I promise you this would be an exceptional gift. I need a hard copy of this book once it launches officially! ^^

As a final note, "Itadakimasu!" ^^ ["いただきます!"]

This book was much more than I expectec. From the write up I saw and the cover, I had thought this would be a fluffy, cute baking book that was fulled with basic recipies that looked like something from popilar anime. Instead a got a mix of cookbook and textbook that blended cultural food history, literary (?) Film (?) Analysis of anime plotting and the roll of food in creating a feeling or being used as sign posts to backstory, emotional state, or other subtle cues to readers familar with japanese culture.

I found it interesting beyond the recipes and pantry advice. I might never bake anything from this book, but I will always see more depth in the animes I happen to watch.

If you love to bake and anime this is definitely a book for you. You are introduced to a variety of bakes from Japanese desserts to desserts inspired by anime, even some that are non-Japanese. The recipes are well written and the pictures beautifully display the end results. I will say that the recipes were in depth and on the harder side but I've learned with baking if you follow a recipe precisely things tend to turn out better. I tried a couple of the recipes and they weren't perfect but were tasty. I look forward to improving upon them and trying some others. The anime included was a wonderful variety and will definitely speak to those who love the genre.

I received an advanced copy of Bake Anime and all I have to say is WOW!! The photos are so beautiful and the writing is simply charming. May I also say that this book goes deep! Sure you will get recipes for the most popular anime out there, but this is an author who knows her stuff and isn’t afraid to provide insight into those niche genres that don’t typically get a look at with books like these. The presentation overall is stunning and this would be a welcome addition to any chef or anime fan’s bookshelf!!

CUSTARD TAIYARI;
HONEY HEART TOAST;

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

Disclaimer: I am by no means a good cook. I am actually a novice when it comes to cooking. This also includes baking. I'm probably even worse at baking.

I really enjoyed looking through this cookbook and drooling over the amazing looking recipes! I don't have confidence in my own baking skills and these recipes look hard for a novice like me, but I am very much looking forward to persuading my friends into making some of these recipes for me.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. The pictures of the desserts are amazing and the recipes seem simple enough to follow. I like that it tells you all the tools you could need and all the party items that you are going to need to make the Japanese dessert that might not normally be in your pantry. Oh, it is cool that it tells you which Anime each recipe comes from. It is split into Japanese recipes and Non-Japanese recipes. This means recipes from other places in the world. I am going to have to try some like the Japanese Strawberry Shortcake. Yum Yum

This is a cute book!

There's a variety of recipes and some pictures to go along with them. This book lists the recipes using cups and has information about what the recipe is from and how to make it. Some of the recipes are pretty standard desserts, but there are some very cute anime-inspired foods in this book! This is a fun find for people who want to feel like they're living in a Ghibli film.

I confess I requested this purely based on the cover because it looked fun, and I love both cooking and anime. And it’s so good! I appreciate the author’s journey of not only wanting the food to look like anime food but to (most importantly) taste good. The recipes are very detailed and look delicious. I particularly want to try making the Forest Spirit Meringues and the Zodiac Mochi Figurines.

No art form makes food look as tasty as anime does. This cookbook recreates dishes from classics such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro and some new favorites like Demon Slayer and Food Wars. In fact, there are quite a few Food Wars recipes in here, as there should be. I was pleasantly surprised to see on from Tanaka-kun is Always Listless as well! Beautiful photographs, easy to understand conversion chart, and helpful tips make this an ideal cookbook for any collection.

I thought this was a book about decorating anime shaped cookies and cakes. Instead (and much better) it is a book about the foods that show up in anime and about the cultural and dramatic cues they represent. Alas, I am not an anime follower so I can't comment on the anime culture references. I think the book is a wonderful concept and the recipes seem fine.

This is an excellent cookbook and guide to Anime. The author's passion for both cooking and Anime makes the book sparkle. The recipes are clear, well written, and easy to follow (if you can find the ingredients). The author patter is delightful. And the photography is so professional. I can't wait for Ms. Bushman's next book!

The book is full of interesting recipes, with lovely visuals! I think it's great to use with my students as they learn about procedural writing, while also learning about many Japanese foods. I think lots of my students are already interested in anime and manga, so this would really help their engagement in the lessons :)

This was a fun read. It was fun to have some background to each recipe, where it came from historically and also where it could be found in an anime setting. It was very helpful to have a list of items and ingredients one might need at the beginning of the book, and also have an explanation of what they were rather just listing them by name. One of the things I appreciated most was the authors suggestions of substitutions if you could not find an ingredient or would like to make a recipe your own. Recipes were easy to follow with through instructions, tips and suggestions. Fun for anyone who likes food and anime!
