In the modern-day YA paranormal romance, it’s like Twilight meets Beauty and the Beast with a twist of small town southern folklore come to life.
Being the new girl has no appeal to Zinn. She prefers to avoid the attention by guarding herself while mending her broken heart. When Zinn meets new friends, she discovers Bargeston isn’t so bad after all.
Soon, though, she realizes three things:
Drew brings unwanted drama.
Savage and his listening ear have an unexpected appeal.
And Dawson’s aggressive attention makes her uneasy.

As Zinn learns more about the school, the people, and the town, she discovers a secret—the Beast may be more than just a myth. Haunted by her past while longing for the safety of her present, Zinn finds the strength to let her heart heal and takes a chance on hope.

Roots Run Deep has a compelling young-adult narrative with fantasy elements and detailed settings. However, the book truly excels in, and is carried by, its characters and their interactions with each other and their environment. Without divulging too many plot details, there are accurate depictions of abusive relationships and how it is difficult to escape the abuse cycle cleanly. Just because something seems clear to the reader (or observing relationships in the real world), doesn’t make the answer to a situation simple. Seeing how the main heroine, Zinn, responds to scenarios feels like you are watching a friend trying to navigate their high school life and how difficult that period is for most people. I also love the set of cousins in the story as they exemplify friendship that everyone has either experiences or wishes they had. There are elements of drama and fantasy, but my favorite part was getting to know these characters and their routines so well that it felt like I lost touch with people that I knew when the story ended. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys character development and clean writing.

Roots Run Deep is one of my favorite reads!! The books is engaging and discusses real issues that teens face, while still having a light hearted wit. Throughout the book, Zinn showed us how to overcome many obstacles, but that it’s also okay to cry and not always be “okay”. I loved Zinn for your toughness and always being true to herself, but my favorite character was definitely Savage. He was just there to listen, but when it was necessary he always seemed to know exactly what to do or say.

A beautifully written story full of wit, a hit of romance, and a twist of fantasy, all while bringing to light real issues that teens can face.
I really enjoyed this book even if it’s not the type of book I usually read. The wit of it drew me in and made it very entertaining. As the story progressed, it broadened my way of thinking about relationships and how they can affect people. Zinn, the main character, learns that it’s okay to move on from your past and build a better future for yourself. She comes to understand the values of friendship and being able to let go of the past. She also learns to trust those close to her. This helps me realize you have to find a balance between the past, present, and future.

A novel that blends fantasy with mental health issues and romance through the lens of a young adult.
In N.S. Nichols debut novel, a teen girl finds herself in a new school feeling like just that, the new girl. Garnering attention from so many, Zinn tries to discern who will be friends or who is out for her. While missing her old school and friendships, Zinn is torn when establishing and trusting friends at her new school. Having left the old school relationships for a new start, Zinn sees her past from a new perspective and comes to some realizations. She also finds this new town and the people in it aren't always what they appear.
This book opens the door for teen girls in relationships the opportunity to see what is or isn't "normal" or may be harmful. As a mother of a teen girl, I feel my daughter will be able to see, thru reading this novel, what to look for in an unhealthy versus a healthy relationship.
I am anxious to read what is in store for Zinn in the next book.

Absolutely loved this book. It handled some heavy themes with grace and provided a good, clean read for all ages. We all know someone who reminds us of Zinn, whether that is ourselves or someone near to us who has similar experiences. I NEED the sequel!!!
