Lynne Beverly Strang is a writer who enjoys sharing stories about career changes and life transitions, having been through a few herself. She is the author of two books: The 4Ls: A Simple Way to Find Life Purpose and Late-Blooming Entrepreneurs: Eight Principles for Starting a Business After Age 40. Prior to becoming a solopreneur, Lynne was a public relations executive for more than 25 years. She lives with her family near Washington, D.C.
As a business writer in the Money section at USA Today for 18years, I have long been a fan of SWOT — strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Whenever I reported a story about a company, I’d build my interviews around SWOT. If I learned the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of any company, I had a solid story. Lynne Strang is the first author — or person for that matter — I know to employ a SWOT-like methodology to those looking for personal fulfillment. She calls it the 4Ls — loves, likes, lives-withs and loathes. She helps readers discover what they love to do, what they find lukewarm, and what repels them. Any decision, career or otherwise, becomes easy once that is figured out and Strang recommends going inward to find out how things make you “feel.” For example, the things one loathes often evoke anger, pain or anxiety. The book is short, and she sums up each chapter with “key takeaways.” However, her methodology takes time and effort.
If you are stuck and missing a life purpose, author Lynne Strang knows that feeling because she has been there. In THE 4LS, A SIMPLE WAY TO FIND LIFE PURPOSE, she helps readers understand and discover their loves, likes, live-withs and loathes. An offhand comment from a man who sells rugs, started Strang on her journey when he said, “All it takes for a happy life is to have someone you love, and something you love doing.” (Page 23)
Each chapter includes a summary of called “Key Takeaways.” I love the practical examples and stories in this book combined with how-to exercises for every reader to discover their 4Ls. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
A book to help you find your purpose in life. I found the 4Ls very insightful. Filled with practical tips for defining your likes and don’t-likes, this book can help you find a career, change careers, consider a job promotion or major move, take up a new hobby and which one, or even just assess your current lifestyle. As I read Ms. Strang’s book, I jotted down my routines and interests in each quadrant of Love, Like, Live-with, and Loathes. Now, I’m using this knowledge to reduce stress in my life and to move forward with the writing support group I’ve been wanting to start for years. Whether you’re looking for a career change, to find an extracurricular activity, or just improve what you’re already doing, I highly recommend The 4Ls. By clarifying your life purpose, you can find the time to do what you love. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!
