An original way to figure out what makes you tick
As a business writer in the Money section at USA Today for 18years, I have long been a fan of SWOT — strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Whenever I reported a story about a company, I’d build my interviews around SWOT. If I learned the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of any company, I had a solid story. Lynne Strang is the first author — or person for that matter — I know to employ a SWOT-like methodology to those looking for personal fulfillment. She calls it the 4Ls — loves, likes, lives-withs and loathes. She helps readers discover what they love to do, what they find lukewarm, and what repels them. Any decision, career or otherwise, becomes easy once that is figured out and Strang recommends going inward to find out how things make you “feel.” For example, the things one loathes often evoke anger, pain or anxiety. The book is short, and she sums up each chapter with “key takeaways.” However, her methodology takes time and effort.
