"She Chose to Love" by Yvette Dulo is filled with inspiring words that will become your new muse. Its four parts, "She Chose to Resist," "She Chose to Heal," "She Chose to Be," and "She Chose to Love", are a well written compilation with beautiful word play and rhyme. You can read it in a few sittings, but I recommend taking your time and simmering in its art. I’m looking forward to seeing future works from Dulo, who proves she’s a talented artist with a knack for inspiring written prose.
Taking choice as a mobilising force, Yvette Dulo’s collection contemplates resistance, healing, being, and loving – all of which are a matter of choice. The poems, however, impart that choice is not a singular act but requires continuous action, it is constant movement, it is changing, even if it might appear circular at times and one might ‘[…] end up at/ the same cornerstone/no matter how far/ these legs propel me’ (Come Round). What matters, though, is there being movement and change, turning the ‘unbeaten track’ into a ‘foot trail’ as one looks back after having reached the same cornerstone. Weaving together attention to detail from day-to-day encounters with imagery as vast as the space, the poems in ‘She Chose to Love’ manage to encompass the prickly edges of living in today’s world and simultaneously smooth them. In my reading, Yvette Dulo’s work relays a sense of empowerment through a purposeful acceptance of a not-so-homely world combined with a quiet strength to keep on moving, and ultimately choose to love and be loved ever so lightly. I enjoyed reading the collection. It left me with a sense of peace and faith that things do change as long as we decide to embark on that journey.
This book truly deserves 5 stars purely because of how simple and delicate, yet empowering poems are including. As I read the book, I imagined myself in the point of view, and I felt the empowerment the book provided.
I would recommend this book to anyone, either as a light read or as literary courage.
Yvette Dulo's "She Chose to Love" is an exceptional debut collection of poetry. Divided into four sections ("She Chose to Resist," "She Chose to Heal," "She Chose to Be," and "She Chose to Love"), Dulo's narrative is crystal clear: overcoming adversity and doubt while embracing self-love.
Dulo uses vivid imagery, subtle alliteration, and simple, yet beautiful, language that paints precise feelings for the reader. She dabbles in different styles and structures, which is fun to read, and I appreciate that she includes both longer poems and shorter pieces to keep the book flowing well.
Phrases like "fermented hope" and wise observations such as "not all showers are evidence of drowning" touched me deeply, and the stand-out poems to me were "Snakes and Ladders," "Adaptation Wounds," "Sideways," Under the Bridge," "Testament," "Embers," "Prism Heart," and "Flame."
In a few pieces, I felt like Dulo could have played with rhythm and phrasing a bit to make some endings flow more smoothly or hit a bit "harder," but over all, I found each piece to be honest, inspiring, and wonderfully penned.
If you're new to poetry or seeking an uplifting read, "She Chose to Love" is an approachable and beautifully written collection that will leave any reader feeling empowered.
A beautiful collection of poems that intertwine elements of nature and our true nature—what it is to be in our bodies, to heal and to choose love. ‘She Chose to Love’ is definitely one of my favourite poems in the collection.
A very touching set of poems that emphasize the importance of love and how experiencing love or the lack thereof can teach us profound lessons. Despite the complexities of the human condition, we can get up each and everyday choosing to love ourselves and those around us ❤️
It’s okay. None of the poems particularly resonated with me but I did enjoy Molotov, Life Long Education and She Chose To Love. Those were by far my favourite.
Had a little laugh at the title “Cosmic Avocado” I thought it was a fun title for a poem
It’s been a long time since I have read a book that was just poetry. I forgot how much I liked poetry. This was a great book and I love how it was sectioned off. I will definitely read this again.
##REVIEW IN ENGLISH##
First of all, congratulations to the author, I have to say that I don't know if her intention was to make me cry, but she has done it and repeatedly hahahaha. Also to thank her for the copy of the book in exchange for a completely honest review. This book is a collection of exquisite and beautifully written poems. I have to say, I don't know much about poems, but I do know a lot about books and let me tell you, this is a worthwhile book. Honestly, I think I give it 4 stars because I would have liked there to be more poems. I have nothing bad to say about the book! I even like the cover. The truth is that I'm thinking of buying it for my birthday, which is now in May and everything hahaha.
By the way, if anyone is interested, "Pearl in a Black Sea" and "Stargazing" were my favourites. Without anything else to say, congratulations author who apart from being patient for my delay in writing the review (which I apologise countless times) is a super nice person and apart from that she writes magnificently good.
"In a world spilling out so much noise let me be the silence"
This poetry collection, She Chose to Love, dives into themes of strength, spirit, and courage.
The collection is divided into sections including "She Chose to Heal" and "She Chose to Be" with each chapter telling beautiful stories and messages on a journey of growth.
I had to take my time with poem to allow Yvette's words to really sink in. Each one is filled with so much thoughtfulness.
If you are looking for encouragement or inspiration, She Chose to Love is a beautiful poetry collection to check out!
I appreciate Yvette expressing her most vulnerable self to us, the readers. This is a read of self-reflection. Each poem sparking a different aspect of how we are doing or where we've been.
She Chose to Love is a declaration of self. Of women coming into their own and showing the world what she's made of. I, too, am a product of my mothers and grandmother. This read was a reminder of who I am. As women we endure a lot, we tolerate of others what we wouldn't tolerate of ourselves.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It brings all sorts of positive emotions and leaves you with warm feelings of inspiration and joy. It made me think about myself and helped me reflect on my life, choices and motivated me to improve things. I felt empowered by it and I'm still re-reading some of the poems from time to time. It's a good read if you want to feel the power inside you awaken. Highly recommend!
This is a beautiful book of poetry. The author speaks with passion. Her voice is unique yet speaks to many. I appreciated the focus on the female gender. I think men can appreciate that too, therefore I recommend this to all poetry lovers no matter their sex. Many of these poems create lovely pictures, both literally and figuratively. The creativity in this volume of poetry is brilliant.
This collection of poems is definitely worth the read. The author takes you on a journey of self love & empowement amidst all that life's throwing her way. The pieces were relatable and touching. We all need to find that self love within us through vast healing. Genuine love from within can takes us on the path we need to see our unique selves. Enjoyed this read. Keep up the good work my fellow writer & author. Definitely recommend to all.
I absolutely love picking up self published poetry, and this collection was an interesting one. Yvette Dulo's debut collection, She Chose to Love, is a beautiful portrayal of overcoming adversity, choosing to heal, be, and love, and so much more. I particularly loved the poem about embracing love, but most importantly, embracing loving yourself. Congrats on your first self-published work - cannot wait to see more from the author!
Absolutely loved the book. The poetry was so... To the point. You know, when you read a line and want to scream at it because of how you relate to it? There were so many times I'd done that in this book.
This is the first poetry I've read since higher education, and, honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed and resonated with some of the texts.
I feel bad rating this so low because I'm newer to poetry so I feel like it's my fault for these poems not resonating with me. But truly I just couldn't connect with any of these except for like two of them. They were difficult to understand the meaning behind and it's disconnecting when I have to work hard to uncover the meaning.
A very inspirational read. This poetry collection takes you on a journey of reflection, healing, and finding self-love. The author’s use of descriptive words paints beautiful images of resilience, healing, just being you, and nurturing your being with love. One of my favourite poems was called Adaptation Wounds. This poem has a clever way of relating healing to nature and how we need to tend to our hurt like a garden by watering it and plowing the soil (to heal from within) to bloom. A very enjoyable read from start to finish!
