First off, she isn't a robot. She's an android. Probably the most advanced android in the quadrant.
Second, don't believe the stories and propaganda circulating about us. They're all wrong.
Sure, I did technically commit treason and blow up some government property. But I had good reasons. Arendi isn't like the mindless bots you know. No, she's sentient and possesses emotions. But more importantly, Earth, humanity and the fate of the galaxy we're all at stake.
So let me set the record straight. This is why I went rogue to be with my Arendi.
Between the Android and Me by Michael Kan is a great science fiction novel that delivers on every front! The writing style is well developed and expertly delivered to produce a very enjoyable and utterly engaging reading experience. The world-building is utterly fascinating and thoroughly fleshed out with not a single aspect felling rushed or tacked on as an afterthought. The story revolves around some quite dark themes and doesn’t shy away from the harsher reality of the future world the author has created. At its core, the book center setting is an Earth which has been mostly de-populated by a series of catastrophic events. There is an arcing mystery as to why this is the case. There are massive conspiracies involved and the main characters are put through the wringer as a result. This book is highly enjoyable even if you are not particularly interested in science fiction. The themes and charters in this setting are strong enough to pull any reader through to experience one hell of a ride. I would recommend this one to anyone who is a sci-fi enthusiast, but broader than that, just to anyone who enjoys as well thought out and expertly constructed tale. Great stuff, can’t wait for the next book
The Writer Michael Kan & narrator of this awesome book have totally surprised me with the joy of listening to his beautiful imagination and his penmanship. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to a true space opera and a special one at that, full of adventures science, aliens, androids and unexpected spins which makes this a hard one to put down for taking a break, just as any reader would love to get their hand on.
This needs a continuation, there are still so much unknowns that a needs for trilogy would finish this beautiful creation !
I got a few books which have been narrated by their writers, this is the first one that the author have perfectly narrated each of the characters and is the first time which I absolutely have no reason for advising to get a professional one, in fact if I would advice it would be to become also a professional narrator.
Without a doubt It absolutely got my Full recommendations !!!
I stumbled upon this book by chance, not knowing what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. It starts strong with a fast-paced action sequence that keeps you reading, exposing you to the author’s unique and interesting voice. The book is long, but the pacing is excellent, letting you breeze through the many mysteries and premises that the book promises in the first chapters. Something that stood out to me is the way the character blends so well with the author’s voice. Makes for an interesting read worthy of not just sci-fi fans. Space Opera and sci-fi fans can expect a satisfying journey when picking up this book. From expected and well-done sci-fi tropes to unique twists, this book has it. As for the characters, they are, simply put, great. From their interesting backstories to the way they interact with each other and the world around them. The relationship between the main characters, a human and an android, blends well with the themes and setting, and it’s executed brilliantly. “Refreshing” comes to mind when thinking of the book overall. I will be following the author’s career with great interest.
Between the Android and Me poses a lot of questions about technology, love, and judgement, and within its centre is a wonderfully crafted tale about a relationship between an Android and a human. There are some touching scenes and some humourous ones, but the action towards the latter half was really good, wrapping the story up in a nice way.
I loved how the android grew, both as a character and physically with upgrades and improvements which made her stronger and more powerful to take on her enemies. Arendi came across as more than human and the relationship she had with Julian felt deep and as connected as any traditional romances. I loved the sci-fi futuristic element to this with AI, wormholes, dystopian factions and space travel, which had all I wanted in a space opera.
Julian has some great internal conflicts but when he threw himself into his situation he owned it despite the risks. I think it is unusual for the circumstances of being in love with android to create a character which doesn't conform to a stereotype, but the author has changed this trope forever.
This was an intriguing story with many unexpected twists in the plot. At its heart is a story of the love and relationship between a man and a very special android. They are pawns in a battle between two great adversaries. This reads like an extended space opera that does come to a finish.
This is not a short read. I spread it out over quite a few days. It held my interest throughout the story.
So right off the bat, what caught my eye—literally—was the writing style. The author's voice meshes incredibly well with the characters to create a very fun, lighthearted tone. Don't let this fool you though, the mystery and the story behind the book are quite dark. So, most of humanity has been removed from Earth after a series of catastrophes and a war that has left some weird hijinks happening on the surface of the planet. The mystery revolves around why this is the case. It's a mystery that takes you on a long tale, through most of the Galaxy, and through some 500 pages that are well worth a read and frankly went by a lot faster than I thought they would.
As a lover of science fiction, I find it imperative to point out when a creative premise comes up and it's done incredibly well. So, this gets my shout out. I immensely enjoyed the voice of the characters, which offsets the dark tone of the world. And by the end, it becomes very clear that there is more to this story. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
I recommend picking the book up and hope you enjoy!
On a somewhat dystopian Earth which is now devoid of all life, all 12 billions souls have been evacuated due to weird storms that rip the actual fabric of reality apart, a byproduct of a devastating war, Julian and his android girlfriend, Arendi are thrust into a massive conspiracy when they try to solve the mystery of how this happened. Their travels take them right across the galaxy with the full might of Earth Force hot on their heels. Along the way they come across bounty hunters, clones and an alien posing as a holographic, telepathic cat. When they finally reach their destination they learn that the answers they seek may be more bodacious than they have ever imagined and may bring into question the laws of physics itself. This was an awesome read. Even though it was a long read, like most space operas are, this was a real page turner. The author’s descriptive and imaginative writing style had me hooked right from the start. I only found out at the end that this is part of a series of books although it is intended as a standalone story. Either way I am eager to read more about Julian and Arendi and will definitely read the other books if they are as good as this one was.
Great fast paced Sci-fi/fantasy. I really enjoyed the story. But so much more were the question this book raised for me about human and android choices, manipulation, totally free AI is it possible?, and so many more. I’m going to set my school students free on this one and see what conversations it generates. Thank you to Bookbuzz and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
If you're hunting for a sci-fi read that genuinely breaks the mold, look no further than "Between the Android and Me". It's a refreshing breath of interstellar air in a genre that can often feel repetitive. This novel is a thrilling exploration of love, rebellion, and the blurred lines between human and artificial intelligence. Kan’s protagonist is delightfully complex, a flawed rebel whose heart leads him into a love story with an unexpected twist. His paramour, Arendi, isn't your usual damsel or fierce warrior; she's an advanced android who brings new meaning to sentience and emotion. Their relationship challenges traditional notions of love, making you question what it truly means to connect with another being. The novel masterfully combines pulse-pounding action and thoughtful ethical dilemmas. Kan's dialogue is sharp and provocative, making you ponder the real-world implications of AI in our increasingly tech-driven society. It's a narrative that feels both timely and eerily prescient. Character development here is top-notch. From the rogue protagonist to the supporting cast, everyone is meticulously crafted. But the real magic lies in the bond between the human and his android lover, a beautifully layered and poignant connection that transcends the ordinary. "Between the Android and Me" isn't afraid to dive into the deep end of moral ambiguity and intergalactic intrigue. The plot twists will leave you stunned, and his exploration of AI's potential and pitfalls feels incredibly relevant. This book is more than just a sci-fi adventure; it’s a mirror reflecting our own technological trajectory. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a thought-provoking and heart-pounding read.
"Between the Android and Me" is expertly crafted, offering an engaging and enjoyable reading experience. The world-building is captivating and comprehensive, with every detail seamlessly integrated into the narrative. The story delves into dark themes, confronting the stark realities of its futuristic setting without reservation. The protagonist, Julian, is a multifaceted character—a flawed rebel whose journey leads to a love story with a twist. His love interest, Arendi, is not the typical damsel or warrior; she is an advanced android who redefines sentience and emotion. Their romance defies conventional ideas of love and prompts introspection on the essence of connection. The novel skillfully weaves intense action with profound ethical questions. Julian's dialogue is incisive and thought-provoking, inviting reflection on the implications of AI in our technology-centric world.
Julian is portrayed as both relatable and deeply flawed, a rebel who defies convention to defend his convictions and protect his unique love interest. The love story is distinctive because the heroine, Arendi, is not just any damsel or warrior princess; she is an advanced android, embodying sentiment and emotion, challenging established beliefs about love and connection. The science fiction elements, including AI, wormholes, dystopian factions, and space travel, are exactly what I seek in a space opera.
The unexpected plot twists are astonishing, and the examination of AI's possibilities and dangers is strikingly pertinent. This book transcends the boundaries of science fiction; it serves as a reflection of our own technological path. It comes highly recommended for those in search of a stimulating and exhilarating read.
Between the Android and Me" is a riveting tale set in a technologically advanced future where the line between humanity and artificial intelligence is blurred. The narrative captures readers with its blend of suspense, action, and profound introspection, prompting them to ponder the true nature of love and consciousness. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue and government propaganda, the story confronts large societal issues that echo the challenges of our times. While the protagonist's rebellion offers a deep dive into human resilience, it's the relationship with an advanced android that truly sets the book apart. The author's voice is unique and refreshing, combining classic sci-fi elements with unexpected twists. Such a combination propels the narrative, ensuring readers remain hooked. Character development is another strength; their backstories and interactions feel authentic, adding depth to the futuristic setting. The central relationship, between human and android, serves as a lens to explore broader themes of identity and connection. However, the book isn't without flaws. Certain sections feel burdened with passive writing and excessive detail, impacting pacing and emotional depth. Still, these are minor setbacks in an otherwise imaginative piece. In essence, "Between the Android and Me" is a significant contribution to contemporary sci-fi, offering readers both entertainment and philosophical contemplation.
When I was looking for another book to read, I found this one, and at first I wasn't sure since it's outside of my usual genre, but I decided to give it a try anyway. I am glad I did. It had me hooked from the start and at first, I didn't understand how someone could love an android, but as I read Julian's story more, the more I understood. I spent the entire weekend reading it, wanting to know what happened to Earth, and I was shocked by that twist ending. It's something I've actually debated with people if it could be true or not, and I like how this book helped make it make sense. I won’t give it away, but it’s something many people wonder if it could be true in other debate groups when it comes to science and computers. I liked seeing Julian's and Arendi's relationship, and I was disappointed to read the end, but I was happy to see that there are more books about Julian and Arendi. I look forward to reading them and seeing how their relationship began. If you’re reading reviews and wondering if you should check it out, I say give it a go. It’s the perfect sci-fi story that includes space travel and bots. It’s a long book, but it doesn’t feel like it because it’s action-packed.
I have quite enjoyed this book. While it is somewhat lengthy, the action-packed narrative ensured that this wasn't a deterrent for me.
The story centers around the romantic relationship between Julian, a heroic soldier, and an android named Arendi. Their relationship becomes entangled in a larger narrative involving conspiracy, renegade A.I.s, and survival. Despite being heavily action-oriented, the book still successfully explores profound themes about what it means to be human or an A.I., the nature of freedom, existence, and even the concept of love, all while characters engage in substantial introspection. The book concludes with a surprising twist concerning the fabric of reality itself. I won't disclose this twist, but I must admit that it wasn't entirely convincing to me (it just seems a bit of an overused trope nowadays). However, it was an unexpected turn of events since there was no indication (or at least I didn't pick any hints) it would end with that revelation, to say the least, and I didn't expect to end like that.
This book would certainly be my recommendation for those who enjoy science fiction novels set in space, particularly if they appreciate a combination of lighter moments and deeper thematic elements.

This book is a must-read for anyone who loves science fiction, romance, and a gripping adventure. I can't recommend Between the Android and Me highly enough!
Its not very often I am surprised by a plot twist. I tend to see them coming. Michael Kan’s Between the Android and Me kept me enraptured as his twists and turns continued to surprise me. I couldn’t put it down because I kept wondering what crazy thing was gonna happen next. Between the Android and Me is also very long so in that sense you get your bang for your buck. Plus the flow of the book was excellent so I never really felt like “ugh, this is too long.” In light of the current release of AI into our world in a very real way so that everyday humans can access it, this book is very timely. It delves into the “what ifs” of our scary new world in interesting ways. On top of all this, it had some fun action scenes too which I really enjoyed. The only negative was a seeming lack of human emotions in it. Kinda like it was written by an android itself. Maybe that’s the point. I don’t know.
Between the Android and Me is an intriguing and fast-paced sci-fi story that poses questions about artificial intelligence, love and ultimately the nature of the universe.
I was expecting more of a romance given the blurb, but I was not disappointed with the characters, relationships or the story. Although the book is quite long, it is engaging and fast-paced. I loved the writing style in the sections told from Julian's perspective. The only thing I occasionally found jarring was the repetitiveness of the descriptor - my girlfriend. It seems to be used as often as the character's name - Arendi. I suppose it helps to make it clear that Julian still sees her as his girlfriend despite the changes she undergoes throughout the book, but it started to take me out of the story.
Although this book is a stand-alone, Julian and Arendi were introduced in the author's earlier books so I'm keen to read them next.
This book’s narrative unfolds with a perfect balance of suspense, action, and introspection. The author's writing style is engaging, keeping readers hooked from start to finish. Each page is filled with unexpected twists, propelling the story forward and leaving readers eager to uncover the next revelation.
Between the Android and Me expertly tackles larger societal issues, touching upon themes of government control, propaganda, and the consequences of rebellion. The protagonist's choice to defy the status quo, despite the personal risks involved, sheds light on the resilience of the human spirit and the pursuit of freedom. Overall, it’s an exceptional science fiction novel that pushes the boundaries of imagination while exploring the depths of human connection.
I honestly hate to say this, but the writing is so poor I couldn't get through this to the end. The cover caught my attention, especially with technology moving so fast in today's world. I was looking forward to reading this book. But the filter phrases and words, long unnecessary sentences, passive writing, it slowed this story down so much it took away from the creative story the writer had in mind. What also stood out was the lack of emotion, which to me also took away from the story. It almost read like this happened, then that happened, without an emotional investment in the characters. I guess this book wasn't for me, but perhaps for others. I do think it would be more dramatic with these writing improvements. Edit Delete
I’m not normally a sci-fi fiction fan, but have tried a few lately and found some good ones, so thought I’d give this book a go. Glad I did, it was pretty cool. The story centres around the relationship between and android and a human, I won’t say too much about it as don’t want to spoil it. There is lots of technology for the geeks like me, and plenty of imagination and creativeness used to captivate the reader.
It felt quite a long book, but I thought it was paced well enough to keep me interested and not to give up on it. There’s a few twists and unexpected things along the way to make you want to keep reading also. I think the author did a good job and sci-fi fans and general fiction lovers will find this one entertaining and interesting enough to be rewarding.
The story is very slow going, and I had a difficult time sticking with it in the first 1/3 of the Audible book. Then it picked up and held my interest. Though I do not believe there is a human being who has that much love to go through what Julian does and still love so completely. Narrator does a fair job with the storyline but is rather monotone in his delivery.
Julian is a decorated war hero. Arendi is a sentient android. They love each other and maintain that love although powerful entities try to tear them apart or kill them. Battle, intrigue, unbelievable power and love ensue.
