White Nights #2

Días de medianoche (Saga de las Noches blancas nº 2)

Rate this book

I enjoyed this second installment. I thought the ending could have been a little neater, but all in all, I thought it was a decent closing half. Kate annoyed me sometimes, but I thought Alex was delicious.

I will say that I miss the tone of AZ's older series, e.g., Twist Me and Capture Me...still, I just love Zaires and I love how she writes mafia style alpha males.

Looking forward to whatever she has in store for us next.

I liked this second installment, the fact that I read it in a day should say so. But this book had no business to be 500 pages long. The plot continued to drag. Honestly, this shouldn't even be a duet, considering the limited plotline, this duet would've done better had it been merged together and marketed as a standalone. I loved the first book and while this book was just as addictive and binge-worthy, it still doesn't make up for the dragged plot and it certainly doesn't justify it's length. The reason I'm giving this book an extra star is because this duet helped me with my slump.

Also both the names of this duet, "White nights" and "midnight days" are given because White Nights in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg refers to the period when the sun stays above the horizon for 24 hours from late May to early July. So even during midnight, the sun never really sets. I love how these russian mafia books are named after Russia's beauty 🥹🤍

At the end of the first book I was expecting this second one to pick up speed based off that cliffhanger. We didn't really get that so much as we got Kate learning to deal with the fact that she's in love with a man who will do things against her will to keep her safe. It gave us that fine line between a forced and consensual relationship. Kate wanted to be with Alex but couldn't understand the need for her to be so confined.

I liked how Kate reacted to her situation. Yes, she is basically kidnapped by her boyfriend, but she loves him and trusts him. This meant she didn't do too much pushing away. You really could see her battling with how she should react to him.

Alex is an easy hero to fall for. It's very obvious that Kate is different for him. He recognizes that she is special and he made every decision to keep her safe. He's a dangerous man but not to Kate. That's very appealing in a hero.

Except for the slower pace in the beginning, this was just as good as the first book. I really enjoyed the fine line of dark and intense romance that these two authors brought in this series.

The story became redundant with explicit sex scenes thrown in at 5-page intervals. It should have been one book.

Well this second and final book didn't disappoint me. My questions from the first book were is the deaths of Alex,s parents related to him having an assassin on his tail, this all comes clear around five chapters before the end of the book and why he has an assassin after him.
It starts off with him in America where his bodyguard takes a bullet for him and Katherine is the nurse in charge, that's how they meet. Katherine is a very strong willed woman who takes no shit. It takes a strong woman to get Alex,s attention and while in the emergency room he takes an instant obsessive attraction to Kate.
They end up in Russia where Alex is from for their protection and this is where Alex finds out everything he needs about his enemies. I loved both of these books as they had, suspense, a whole story behind a couple getting together and the pit falls of being high profile and wealthy.

Beta Review:

Kate Morrell is in way over her head. The twenty-five year old ER nurse met a handsome and charismatic Russian businessman at work. He had just evaded an attempt on his life. They fell into instant lust, as one would immediately fall for a fully loaded hot fudge banana split ice cream sundae on a scorching summer day. When said sexy Russian asked in no uncertain sexy terms to see her after work, she politely declined. However, his confident smile and smouldering words continued to haunt her imagination, and when he next reappeared, she took a chance at a “one night stand.”

What she learned is that Alex Volkov is a man like no other. He is wealthy beyond measure, dangerous in a very material sense of the word, and insatiable in his virility. Alex wants more from Kate, and Alex always gets what he wants. Kate wanted to play it smart and avoid a broken heart, but she couldn’t help falling in love anyway. Now, her one night stand has turned into an uncompromising, overbearing, kidnapping boyfriend!

Dangerous Alex has equally dangerous unseen enemies gunning for him, and they’re willing to use Kate to lure him out. He will do everything in his power to keep Kate safe. Everything. Including hiding her in his stronghold in St. Petersburg. Will Alex figure out who the assassins are, before they strike again? Before he loses Kate?

Midnight Days is a thrilling conclusion to the White Nights duet. There was a certain breathlessness to my reading experience, which seemed to stem from the undercurrent of peril mixed with the undeniable sensuality of the couple. I felt off balance throughout, as if I was being magnetically drawn forward by the words, unable to slow myself down.

Despite the messed up boundaries of Kate’s situation, the chemistry between Kate and Alex still felt realistic, inevitable, and scorching. The imagery of their lives and the expression of their feelings were very poetically and beautifully written. Their intimate scenes were powerfully erotic. And plentiful. This is Anna Zaires and Charmaine Pauls at their full potency! For readers who look forward to the thrill of pure alpha escapism, this will not disappoint!

My Review

This is the conclusion to Alex and Kate’s story and it was so good. At the end of the previous book, Alex practically kidnapped Kate after her life was indirectly threatened by one of his many enemies. Now whisking her off to his fortress of a residence in Russia Alex is prepared to go to whatever lengths necessary to protect the woman he has fallen for even if that means upsetting the woman herself.

Kate knows Alex is only doing what he feels right to ultimately keep her safe but the way he has gone about things just doesn’t sit well. Her choices are now extremely limited and she feels practically a prisoner though one with a very luxurious cage. Alex is also keeping secrets and this lack of transparency however well-meaning only pushes her further away. Feeling like a possession and having her choices taken away continues to drive a wedge.

Alex just wants to keep Kate safe and oblivious to how much danger she is actually in. Of course, he feels guilt over how things are but if it keeps Kate safe well that’s his ultimate end game. But the more he tries to cocoon her away and shield her from the reality of his world and the situation they are both currently in the further it seems to alienate Kate who just wants the truth from him be it good or bad.

But even when these two were at odds there chemistry together was never in question this was absolutely red hot in heat and it’s so easy to see that Alex would go to the ends of the earth for his Katerina as she would him. Through all this even when at her lowest Kate’s feelings for Alex stayed true to the course.

There was action and romance and passion some slight OW drama. All throughout this, there was an underlying sense of danger that kept me on edge just waiting for everything to implode. Kate is now firmly ensconced in Alex’s world and it’s like nothing she could ever have imagined. This was definitely well written and such an easy page-turner a really great finish to this duet which I’ve enjoyed immensely.

Fabulous! Everything a mafia romance should be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s a lot of “mafia romance” out there. Some of it is good; some of it is completely addicting. This book, the final installment, and the series as a whole, is the benchmark for how a mafia style romance should be written.
The compilation of these two authors is just amazing. We are on a rollercoaster of many different emotions and many different scenarios. You just don’t know what you’re going to get from one page to the next. These authors dive deep into the edgy, darker romance that we hate to love.
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the manipulation and obsession; true love and the need to control. It’s a delicate balancing act and Zaires and Pauls crafted an obsessive story for the characters and the reader! I truly did not want it to end.
So much love for this one. It is a book and a series you will read again and again to grab all of the subtle nuances of their obsession and compulsions.
So finally part 2 (I know, I know it’s only been about 5 weeks but it felt longer) and yes you have to read the previous book White Nights first.
So let me just say this was a fabulous and addictive read….once I’d got going. I should probably just leave it there but…
Okay so I struggled a little early on. It’s a difficult situation I appreciate that. Kate is in love with the man who’s basically kidnapped her and is holding her captive. So yes there’s tension and a long adjustment period. But I hated the lack of communication between the main two. Yes I understood the reasons but that doesn’t mean I liked it.
I’m making a mess of trying to explain what I didn’t like. Kate is a strong, intelligent and independent female. She’s fallen for a strong controlling man. Oh look I’m just going to say it.
Kate annoyed me at times.
Wow that feels better. It was such a shock as well because Charmaine’s females don’t annoy me. They’re brilliant all the time.
Anyway once I’d got past this I was hooked. I couldn’t read fast enough and I loved it.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes I definitely would.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author.
Midnight Days is the ending I wanted for Alex and Kate!
It kept me on the edge for the whole time,  making me feel many emotions
(rage, passion/ obsession, love, fear),
and it gave me the HAE i was waiting for,
even if it was a bit rushed.
Kate is trapped in Alex's home in Russia,
while he try to find out who wants him dead
and why.
Losing her freedom is hard, but even if she wanna hate Alex, her love for him is too strong.
And their chemestry an unstoppable force.
Alex is driving himself crazy in order to protect Kate. The only thing that keep him sane is touching her, knowing she is there with him.
But being so controlling and sturbbon could break forever their bond.
I have to say these two gonna make you suffer a bit before the happy ending...
I would have gladly slapped Alex once or twice for his behaviour, and even Kate had her moments.
The story is fast paced, action packed,
and very hot 😏😏
The authors did a great job in giving the same attention to the love's part and the suspense one.I also liked the crossover with other series.
Anna Zaires and Charmaine Pauls are very talented authors, and together they are a force to be reckoned. And i'm looking forward to their next work.
Recensione in Anteprima sulla mia pagina Bookstagram
⭐⭐⭐⭐, 5
Dato che qualcuno aveva fatto recapitare a casa di Alex la tessera di Kate di accesso all'ospedale, l’oligarca in tutta fretta aveva fatto preparare i loro bagagli ed erano partiti per la Russia. Nonostante le innumerevoli proteste della donna, l’aveva fatta salire sul suo aereo, allo scopo di allontanarla dalla sua casa, dal lavoro, dalla mamma e dai suoi amici, per tenerla al sicuro.
Si perché non solo la vita di Alex era in pericolo visto che qualcuno lo voleva morto, ma anche quella della donna che amava e della quale era ossessionato ad un livello patologico.
Kate capiva le sue motivazioni, Alex non aveva fatto mistero della gravità della situazione e le aveva spiegato le ragioni per cui fosse stato necessario tornare nella sua Patria, ma nella casa enorme e bellissima di Alex a San Pietroburgo si sentiva una prigioniera, perché di fatto lui l’aveva rapita.
E più lui stringeva la morsa intorno a lei, facendola seguire ovunque dalle guardie del corpo e limitando al minino la sua libertà, più Kate si allontanava, scivolandogli tra le dita.
Ma uno dei più influenti boss della bratva di San Pietroburgo era sulle sue tracce. Era necessario tenere Kate al sicuro in ogni modo possibile perché le loro vite erano in pericolo, e Alex avrebbe fatto qualsiasi cosa in suo potere per salvare la donna che gli era entrata sottopelle e che gli apparteneva.
Una donna il cui carattere diventava incostante alla luce del giorno, tenendolo a distanza, ma che la notte con l’aiuto della luna gentile, si concedeva a lui totalmente, anima e corpo.
🖋️Questo romanzo rappresenta la conclusione perfetta per la bellissima storia d’amore, intensa e passionale, ideata dal duo di autrici ormai ben consolidato, che ho amato leggere in Anteprima.
Un racconto incalzante, ricco di azione e suspence, proprio come mi aspettavo.
Alex è un uomo potente, ricco e pericoloso. Un maniaco del controllo che nel momento in cui ha messo gli occhi sulla bella infermiera, ha deciso sarebbe stata sua.
La crudeltà e la gentilezza convivranno sempre dentro il suo animo, ma mentre i suoi nemici conosceranno solo il suo lato tenebroso, la sua Katyusha avrà libero accesso al suo cuore, sarà la sua unica certezza nella vita, colei a cui aggrapparsi nei momenti di difficoltà e tormento, ma soprattutto quella luce che ormai credeva di aver perduto per sempre.
The conclusion to Alex' and Kates Story.. I am shaken but I loved it. It's so much more than just a Romance, it's intense and every woman should have a man by her side who protects her like Alex Volkov did with Katherine Morell..
A damn good ending to a damn good book.
This was deliciously hot, filled with danger and drama, and heartbreakingly angsty at times.
Picking up where the first book ended, I was immediately thrown into the turmoil that Kate was dealing with. Her internal fight against the control Alex was asserting had me in a mess of emotions. I totally understood her feelings and yet I could see his side of things as well. It was a crazy ride of give and take where control was concerned.
I couldn’t help but love Alex. Yes, he was extremely overbearing, but the situation he found them in and his feelings for Kate ignited a fierce fire within him to protect her at all costs. He was definitely an alpha lord where she was concerned and I loved how he could be domineering one moment and sweet and gentle the next.
For a good portion of this story, it is an emotional battle between this hero and heroine. The angst had me on edge. Then things took a turn and I was on edge for a whole new reason. I couldn’t get to the end fast enough. I needed this couple to have their happy ever after and I needed to know what that was going to look like for them. Then these amazing authors gave me the sweetest epilogue ever and I was finally able to breathe again.
This was a bit of a mixed bag for me.
I liked that she originally says no and stands up to him where she has control, in book 1 the Hero whisked her off to Russia without really giving her much choice, to keep her safe.
I liked that she wasn't constantly fleeing and escaping her captivity, once one of his men explains why the Hero has acted the way he has and that it puts them all at risk if she doesn't abide by the precautions the Hero has set in place then she respects those boundaries.
I was a bit frustrated by the lack of communication, there are some things that should be discussed but aren't so they cause angst and it's pretty predictable.
The heroine has broached the subject of the other woman in book 1 but again the answers didn't really satisfy so it's not surprising to the reader when issues regarding her pop up again.
But it was a bit frustrating that the heroine allowed her to get under her skin so much when a conversation with the Hero could have cleared that up, it's been done so many times.
The heroine and the chef are discuss the housekeeper, but no-one mentions this to the Hero, not that she was as much an issue as I expected but grrrr.
Also the heroine's mystery father is never solved, unless I missed it and in book 1 I felt it was going to be important but other than her having no real heritage which proved her worth in the eyes of some then it was a red herring I suppose.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
The Hero is besotted with the heroine but as he hasn't communicated then she thinks she is an obsession to him but he isn't interested in anyone else.
Dual POV plus a few odd chapters from the villains.
Butt stuff.
HEA.
I was disappointed with how this one turned out.
It was just another case of me being excited for the second book in a duet, and it not living to my expectations 🥲. Although my review might sound like I didn't like it- I did on a base level- one thing about AZ and CP, is that they both write nice dark romances (and the writing within this one worked for me). It had a satisfying ending, but it just came down to personal preference, as there were a lot of moments for me that didn't work 💀.
This book was practically an extension of the first one and could've just been a part of the first- it had no right being this long 😐🤷‍♀️.
My main problem was just the heroine: I genuinely found Kate insufferable in this book. Although I got her reactions, it just wasn't that enjoyable to read after a while- reading about her constantly feeling bad about herself got old so fast- which just led to her acting really immaturely and making such stupid decisions later on in the book. I briefly talked about my dislike for the push and pull dynamic within the first book, but it was just a lot worse/ more serious within this one. The repetitiveness of the lack of communication and the reluctance to actually listen to one another was so bad considering the length of the book.
The book in a nutshell: Argue, have sex, then wallow (and repeat for another 400 pages).
This was such a long book, yet nothing really happened?- Kate and Alex got nowhere in their relationship aside from all the smut, and the development that I was hoping to see just didn't happen- and rather was left for the epilogue, which was really frustrating to see. At least within the first book it made sense why there was distance between the characters-but in this one there really weren't any intimate scenes?- it was just aftercare 😐 and a constant cycle of inner monologues that were never outwardly expressed.
A lot was left unanswered within this book, and the plot really got lost along the way. There was a much stronger theme of business and being a part of the mafia in this one- The main concept of this book was that Alex and Kate's lives were in danger, where Alex was trying to find out who was responsible. Although I liked how it was written, it sort of lost its appeal towards the end- especially because of the way it was handled- it felt really convenient and didn't have the best climax for me?- considering all the effort that was put into their safety, the ending just threw all Alex's efforts away 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️.
All that aside I did (similarly to the first one), love Alex. He really did try his hardest, and you could really tell that he cared. He was the sweetest, and I love him so much 😭🙏. (Kate really ruined things for me huh 💀😐). Although much didn't happen in terms of development, we did get insight into his character-Also, Tima's character was everything and he deserves nothing but happiness.
“And Krupnov?”
“Yes, Mr. V-volkov?”
“If it’s not the prettiest ring that’s ever been made, I’ll you.”
Anyways that's it. It was an alright book, The writing was consistent and worked for me, it just, again, came down to personal preference. I was doing alright but the last couple of chapters sealed it for me. There were definetly some nice scenes but all in all it wasn't what I was hoping to have seen. (I still loved the ending though).
Still love u Alex 😤💍
Did I stay up most of the night reading this book after my pre-order hit my iPad? Yes? Do I have any regrets? Absolutely not. It was absolutely perfect and I would do it again.
The conclusion to this duet picks up where the first book left off. Alex has taken Kate to Russia, essentially, as captive. I don’t know why but I expected him to try and make it feel less like she was a prisoner but he didn’t. The stark reality of her situation isn’t sugar coated even though he doesn’t want her to be unhappy he’s absolutely uncompromising about her safety. God, I love this kind of obsession in my heroes.
If you’ve enjoyed Anna & Charmaine’s previous works you’ll love this one too. Alex Volkov is easily one of my favorite book boyfriends I’ve ever read.
Story 5/5, Heat 5/5, Darkness 2/5, Angst 2/5
Fast burn, Kate is understandably upset but he’s fairly irresistible so she succumbs to his seduction at 29%.
No condoms, no virgins, former manwhore, anal play, push away from h, OW drama, no OM drama, no separation. No sharing, no cheating, no cliffhanger and HEA with epilogue
Safety - I’d consider this a safe read. The OW drama is pretty standard. H isn’t even slightly interested and doesn’t give her any attention. She drops her evil little manipulations on h as often as she can and considering the situation with Kate’s captivity they are pretty effective.
There is violence, torture and death like you expect in books like this.
Anna Zaires & Charmaine Pauls have an amazing style that draws you into the story straight away. The writing was perfectly on point as always and the pace of the story was flawless with flaming hot love scenes. I really enjoyed this second installment, so why didn't I give this a 5-star rating? Because I found Kate a little too Judgmental and skeptical towards Alex and his motivations at times...That being said, I listened to the audio version and both narrators did a great job of bringing the characters to life for me. Overall rating: 4 solid Stars!❤️
After White Nights i needed closure desperately.
And lucky for me,Charmaine and Anna gave me the ARC to Midnight Days before that need consumed me completely.
Having the answers,knowing what happened,getting closure,even if the road there was rocky to put it mildly….i now find i can breathe again,and relax in the knowledge everything is alright in Kate and Alex’ world.
Taking Kate home to Russia may have been a good solution to Alex,she’s not so sure.
He intends to keep her safe at all costs,she feels like a prisoner.
With no say in anything,and no way to reach her loved ones without Alex’ help.
Being locked up,without control of anything,is not something Kate takes well,and even though Alex ís aware what he’s doing to her,he feels he has no other choice…..
All he can do,is hunt for the ones responsible for the threats against their lives.
Because,by bringing Kate into his life,she’s become a target too…
Kate had her principles,and stuck by them as much as she could.
While still loving the man that was responsible for the situation she was in.
Alex may have been a ruthless man,coldhearted and determined,the soft spot he had for Kate made him do everything in his power to give her what she needed…..within reason.
The second part of Kate and Alex’ story was a rollercoaster ride with delicious highs,and heartbreaking lows.
With moments where i despaired if they’d get a hea,or even lived to see another day.
Charmaine and Anna wrote a story that held me captive from start to finish.
A story that had me cheering,crying,cursing and bracing for the worst.
In short,a story i loved!!
“I’ve made her a part of my world by falling in love with her. I’ve dragged her into the filth, and there’s no going back. Not now. Not ever. She’s been mine and I’ve been hers from the moment I laid my eyes on her.”
Alex and Kate’s wild journey has come to an end!
I love that for a most this book it was set in Russia. Although Kate would definitely disagree. Kate has always been extremely independent and to go from that to being forced to stay in Russia, a country that she doesn’t know the native tongue, is being kept in Alex‘s house, guarded with multiple guards. She can’t go on the Internet, she can’t use the phone and it is a huge struggle for her to lose all basic rights because Alex is doing everything he can to keep her safe from whoever is trying to get to him.
Alex is not wanting to tell her everything that’s going on, and with Kates mother in the states, it’s really overwhelming. And you can totally empathize with her character.
Alex is Alex though. And when these two have sex, it is pure fire. The anal scenes.
Lots of it. And buttplugs. 😂😂🔥
“Her body sways rhythmically to my beat. She’s a beautiful instrument to play, and all her songs are mine.”
There is OW drama but Alex wants absolutely nothing to do with this person. The OW purely wants Alex because her family and Alex will make an extremely powerful coupling. No cheating❌
There is a manipulation between this OW and Kate.. which does bring some new drama into the story.
However book 2 of this duet, we finally get the conclusion on who’s been after Alex and why. And it does leave off on a really cute and happy epilogue.
La trama es muy inverosímil, no por las actividades una mafia que está en activo y que no quiere dejar ningún cabo suelto, sino más bien por los personajes.
Álex, el personaje masculino principal, es un narcisista obsesivo que quiere hacer las cosas a su manera, sin contar con cuantos le rodean. Siempre dominante y extremista.
Ella, por contrapunto, sumisa, abocada a hacer y deshacer lo que Álex la ordena.
Es un sinsentido. Una relación tóxica que cambia de color en las últimas páginas.
No me ha convencido.
I still liked this book, but there wasn't a ton going on. I really wasn't sure what to rate this, but it definitely kept my attention.The 'make you fall in love with me then kidnap you and never let you go no matter what' situation is always kinda fun. And I love a crazy, possessive Russian H so this still worked for me, but some of the plot elements were a little annoying and didn't make a ton of sense. Regardless, still a good read and a nice end to this duet.
Eccoci al secondo volume Sole di mezzanotte che conclude la dilogia White Nights del duo Anna Zaires e Charmaine Pauls.
Al contrario del primo volume, che non mi era piaciuto, devo dire che in questo ho ritrovato finalmente l'adrenalina, la suspense e le scene mozzafiato a cui ci hanno abituato le autrici.
E grazie anche al pov di Alex, che nel primo manca, riusciamo finalmente ad avere una visione più ampia e chiara dei suoi pensieri, dei sentimenti forti verso Kate, del suo passato oscuro e della sua risalita dal fango alla sua scalata al successo, tanto da diventare uno degli oligarchi più potenti di San Pietroburgo.
Difatti, in questo secondo capitolo la storia è ambientata a San Pietroburgo, dove Alex praticamente porta Kate contro la sua volontà per proteggere la sua amata a tutti i costi dall'assassino che li vuole uccidere.
Sole di mezzanotte è un libro bello corposo, ma la narrazione è fluente, avvincente, ricco d'azione, angst, e molte scene ad alto tasso erotico (forse un po' troppe) ma sempre intriganti e ben scritte.
Molto interessanti i pov dal punto di vista dei cattivi della storia.
E mi ha fatto molto piacere ritrovare un personaggio della serie Molotov che ho amato tanto.
Lo consiglio, anche se a mio modesto parere ho preferito e amato di più altri libri della Zaires e la Pauls.
La traduzione è davvero migliorata tanto.
I wasn't crazy about the first book (White Nights), but I like Anna Zaires, so I thought the story must improve in the second volume. It does not. Honestly, the heroine is TSTL and the hero has a magic, mesmerizing peen. When it became apparent by 50% that the heroine was not going to grow a brain or a backbone, I mentally renamed the series Twit vs. Tw@t, and settled in hoping merely that the authors would remember that there should be an iota of romance somewhere in the story. They did shove a bit in in the last couple chapters, but by then I didn't care.
Everything surrounding the mafia was dragged.
I can’t believe i’m saying this, but too much sex. They fought and they had sex.
