When Maxwell sends Team Trouble to investigate a series of unfortunate events, we discover that everything in Texas is bigger—including the mayhem.
Between hexed hijinks, rodeo riots, and line-dancing drama, my team has its hands full...
And that’s before things really go to hell.
When the baggage of disgruntled exes and slighted gods and goddesses get thrown into the mix, the violence of the empowered world hits way too close to home.
But through it all, we find strength in the same place as always…in the love of family and friends.
Book five in the Case Files of an Urban Druid series, Hexes in Texas, brings you another chaotic free-for-all filled with your favorite Clan Cumhaill characters.

UNBELIEVABLE! Laugh out loud and cry till you’re snotty.
It’s so much fun when you’re in public, quietly reading your book when, suddenly, something the author has written compels you to spit your coffee out alla projectile vomit. The LOOKS one receives from those around truly defy description. Waving your device at them and saying, “It’s a really funny book,” doesn’t seem to do much.
However, it’s when the tears start to roll down your face only a few minutes later, along with the commensurate snot, (AFTER describing it as a really FUNNY book, let me remind you) that they begin to look a bit worried and start to quietly edge as far away as possible.
This is the experience one can expect from this “over-the-top and keeping on going” series. It’s no single thing. It’s not one specific plot thread or storyline. It’s not even one individual character, although the “Irish lass” does hold center stage much of the time for good reason. Rather it’s the cumulative sum of 20 individual books and the wealth of character and story development they contain that give so much life to this particular endeavor. It is SO worth it.
Now… No spoilers here, but it just so happens that this particular book has a scene in it which even when taken out of context is pretty damn funny. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, yes, this is indeed THE Dionysus of Greek mythology, god of wine and erotica. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the wit of Ms. Auburn Tempest;
“I glance at the announcer’s booth wondering how... Oh, the guy from the ticket booth who recognized me is whistling and waving.
I wave at the crowd as we leave the ring and roll my eyes at Sloan and Calum. “Where the hell is Dionysus? He’s the only one who gets off on this kind of fanfare, and he’s missing it.”
“Next up in the ring is a newcomer riding Black Magic. Known as the God of Good Times, the Son of Sparta, give it up for Dionysuuuuus!”
The crowd goes wild, and the three of us spin in time to see the gate open. Dionysus comes flying out, arm in the air, riding a massive black bull.
Being a native Texan, I wanted to read this part of the series. It was very interesting, and I'm fairly sure political campaign tours are much like this, with the hurrying from place to place. Knowing distances between some of the towns were unreal, but was thrilled when I read Auburn's explanation. The specified "Gods" were just extra calamities for Fi.
Auburn, if you and Michael read the reviews, you will be glad to know that I read all the extras at the end, and enjoy them., and it's nice to know they aren't "rubber-stamped". Thank you for that.
Just a little geography lesson. Big Bend National Park is located near Alpine Texas. It’s is almost 400 miles from San Antonio. It’s a 5.5 to 6 hour drive away. Your knowledge of geography and practical driving distances is horrifying (To a Native Texan anyway). Don’t Mess with Texas!
The whole first part of the story is about events that occur after Fi and Slone return from their honeymoon, first in the Hidden City, then in Toronto. I love how the City is developing. Then, finally, Team Trouble is assigned to investigate a problem in Texas. The governor is having problems on his campaign trail that might be empowered related, so Fi’s group has to babysit him on his bus trip across Texas.
Their trip starts at U.T. in Austin, then on to San Antonio, Big Ben National Park, back to San Antonio (?), There’s a couple of visits at each place with empowered problems happening at each, until Team Trouble figures it out and solves the problem. Bruin features in this story.
This is really cool since I live in Austin, so know and/or visited most of the places mentioned in Texas. All except Big Bend. Haven’t made it there yet.
Footnote: 1) Not everything’s about Fi. Kinu is Jackson’s mother. She held him inside her for 9 months, gave painful birth to him and cared for him when he was helpless. She’s the one who needs to be comforted and reassured. I know. When my youngest son died at 18, I was devastated and needed the support of my family and friends. Didn’t get what I needed and ended up seeing a councilor. Aiden should be with her. Instead they left her alone with, to her, what are non-relatives and barely friends.
Fave scenes: Jackson’s dragon ride, the Riverwalk dinner cruise, the Rodeo bull fight and Artemis’s hunt.
Okay, so maybe y'all are unaware, seeing as how y'all aren't from Texas... but Y'ALL encompasses you and all and does not need all in front of it. Now, Michael should know that, him being from Texas after all. However, Auburn is Canadian, and I'm not sure where your editor is from. There were only a couple of places in the book where the 'all' was needed. Can you tell it drove me a little nuts???
Having said all that, I absolutely LOVED this book!!!!! Maybe it's because it was mostly set where I grew up, so I recognized a lot of the scenery. Maybe it's because it addressed the Crescent Called...we're learning more!!! Maybe it's because it's just a kick-a** story with great characters that I have totally fallen for. Maybe it's all of the above... except that whole all y'all thing...lololol
Just as I thought I needed to return both my books to the library and my body and attention to the world, I got a cold! Hurray! An excellent excuse to continue reading about the Cumhaill clan with their urban Druidry and friends along the magical spectrum from Gods and ancient Greeks to the animal companions, angels and more. Terrible danger, a family that truly functions on love and support (as well as truly terrible 'but the family gets it' jokes to make us smile), and plots that keep me involved? I'm grateful for a couple of days of Urban Druid case files and an occasional dose of cold medicine. So many reasons to love this series, I'm sure almost every reader can find at least one, even if they don't fall in love with every bit of life with the Urban Druids and their allies and enemies.
I really only have one little nit-pick with this book, and that's probably because I'm from Texas and we use the word y'all ALL the time. Amber keeps writing dialog for Jonah where he says "all y'all". Y'all is inclusive of everyone, so we NEVER put the word before y'all. Michael used to live very close to my house before he moved to Vegas, so he wouldn't have written it this way, and the editor should have caught it. Having said all that, I think this is just about my most favorite book in the series. I like the fact that a lot of it tends to be cerebral rather than constant physical fights.
This book, as all in this series are, was amazing. Auburn and Michael entertain endlessly. Being from TX myself, I enjoyed It's view of it. I got a kick out of seeing familiar things through new eyes, and the inclusion of Native Gods, was fun.
Just a quick note, and Michael knows this... The beautiful boat ride through the Riverwalk? Basically y'all are just floating through a storm drainage ditch. LOL.
One more romp with Team Trouble and Clan Cumhaill. Not a stand-alone: suggest start with The Gilded Cage. But if you like this family, expect to devour the 20 books so far in short order.
I spend time whenever possible in these worlds where love is a matter of choice and commitment; good feelings are the payoff for love and not the definition. And I keep downloading LMBPN series for the fact that a primary value is inclusion; exclusion is correctly (IMO) seen as self-defeating.
family means everything is Fiona’s motto. this book proves this as she takes on a old foe.
As Fiona says. Family means everything! This story proves this over and over As her family grows and those she has adopted into her family have found. This motto means she will die too protect them. Fiona has to show this too many times and this time she is gone. The family is devastated but pulls together.
This book was certainly not the best in the series but still a good enough read.
The good parts are the same as always with these books, the main protagonist and her colorful entourage, some snarky dialogue and some magical ass-kicking.
I especially like the focus on family, especially a family that sticks together in good and in bad times unlike these dysfunctional and psychopathic “families” a’la Hollywood that are way too popular in books, TV-shows and movies.
However, I felt the book was quite slow to get going. The first quarter of the book was filled with mundane bla bla before the story actually started to go somewhere.
I also was not too happy about annoying, and cheap in my opinion, twist/drama of someone in the family getting “taken over” etc etc.
Ok, I’ve been reading this series since the first book. The story line has gotten so good that I fly through each one. The family dynamics are profound, the snarkiness is over the top, and the love is bountiful and all encompassing. If you start this series, you’ll surely be in the same boat as me.
Ok sometimes it is all just too much and there were some spots in the beginning that I felt were too much of a good thing. I got over it though, and the rest of the story really had some wowzer reveals. The ngs are changing all over. Looking forward to where the story will take us next.
I cannot say enough good things about this series, it pulls on your heart strings, there is so much action and magic in it and the characters are awesome. In this book Fi, her friends and family wage a battle against a couple of entitled gods who think nothing of hurt humans who get in their way. I love this series and once again cannot wait for the next book.
I am so blown away by the original story line, the characters, and the whole series! Unexpected plot twists and fabulous writing kept this so engrossing it was tough to put down! I cannot wait to see where this story takes us next! The way they collect forever friends and look out for each other is life done right!
This book is a wonderful part of the Urban Druid series. Fiona and her f&f - her crew - once again save the day when San Fransisco suddenly goes missing. I love how the characters have developed to who they are in this book. Fi is all about sharing the love, following a code of living, and defending those who need help the most.
Superb series, always entertaining and enjoyable!!!!
Congratulations to Auburn Tempest and Carolina Mac for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and e,xciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Fi and parts of team trouble go to Texas to investigate strange occurrences with a govenor's campaign. But all is not as it seems and Fi's group has a fight on their hands. Help comes from unexpected places and it goes past the wire.
I absolutely love these books how everything is firmly centered around family how family can mean blood but also other and that nether is stronger or weaker in the giving and receiving of love and support.
Can't wait for the next adventure with Fi and her crew. These books are awesome. Love the characters. The storylines holds and peaks your interest. I thoroughly enjoy the escape found in the pages of this series.
Adventure, battle, travel, god, goddess, immortal, fun, history, family, friends both old and new, learning, and above all else love. This story does not disappoint in any of the above words and more. It is one of my favorite series to read.
You're first urban druid series hooked me from book 1. I'm always saying " awesome sauce". And more of fi sayings, you're next series sucked me in just the same I don't want your book's to end.
This may be the best of the series so far. Serious action lots of twists. In this one Fiona and the team take on a couple of Gods and havoc reigns. I'm looking forward to more.
I am an ER nurse who has been torn up, beat down and added PTSD to my personality mix over the last few years. Fi and all her crazy shenanigans give me the laugh and escape I need. Simply FUN to read, as usual!
Wonderful like all of the Tempest/Andersen books, but I have to admit to being disappointed in the shortness of the story. Not even 300 pages! Hopefully, future books will flesh out so that they will provide more than one day’s reading!
Talk about action packed! Oh my. Several changes of locales. Really evil villains yet again. This version of ",Coyote' not as kind as the Mercy Thompson series. Happy ending with a loose end left.
Hold on to your hats and get your affairs in order because you won't want to miss a minute of this series. It really is one of the best I have read, believable characters and outrageous escapades. Cudos to Autumn for her ingenuity and writing talent.
I didn't see those plot twists coming but I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how they got out of that fix. It was a great story and a fantastic addition to Fiona and Team Troubles adventures.
Another fast paced, seriously snarky and action packed adventure with our favorite druid and her friends and family. I hope they continue this series for many years to come! Loved it.
Holy smokes! This has to be my absolute favorite book in the entire series. Mostly because the majority of the family is back in the same place and they’re safe compared to where they were living. And yay, they survived and thrived against several gods!
