Abby and her new husband, Declan, are honeymooning in Ireland. He's training and heads out for a run. Hours pass without hide or hair. Abby starts to worry. The police get involved, and as days pass, her worry deepens. A ransom for Declan lands in Abby's lap, she pays it, but never sees or hears from Declan or his kidnappers after the drop. When weeks go by, she has no choice but to return home. In the airport she bumps into a woman identical to Declan's ex wife. A woman who is supposed to he dead . . .
I was hooked from the get. Hinkens has written another bombshell psychological thriller. I was blown away at every turn and couldn't put this down.
For the first half of this book, I was sure the whole ordeal was a setup for money, but that abruptly changed with several shocking twists. Things got much darker than I ever imagined. And the last 20% gets darker and darker. What a wild, wild ride!
I really found this book tediously boring. I agree that things happened, here and there, but honestly it really wasn’t enough to keep the book going. I’m not sure if it was the main character Abby or something else about this story that really dragged for me. Abby just seemed so clueless and not really likable and I didn’t like the storyline at all. Her husband disappears the first day of the honeymoon in Ireland and Abby has to come up with a ransom to save him. Come on! That is just too unbelievable. And that DRAGGED on for way too long. What with the kidnappers demands, the pictures and videos of her husband being beaten up, the drop off of the money, the cancellation of the drop off, the new drop off, well you get it, boy did it draggggggg….Thank God for the kindly Airbnb owner and her soda bread and her weird son that just gave off a bad vibe.
There was no real back story on Abby and her new husband’s life together so I really didn’t care about either one of them. It wasn’t like you would know anything positive or negative about them because the story literally starts from the first day of the honeymoon. Other characters predictably cycled throughout the story, the Airbnb owner, her weird son, the detective, the best friend, the police officer, the other police officer, the other detective, the private eye, the dead ex wife, the bratty step daughter, the shady personal assistant…well you get the drift…and it really added nothing to the book. Red herrings I guess but not very subtle that’s for sure.
And when Abbie attempts to get to the bottom of the kidnapping she somehow manages to get herself into more trouble… SHOCKER! She was just so useless. Traveling to a different state to track down the first wife.. But wait, what? That went horribly wrong..and who can afford to miss 4 different planes? And never actually go to work at all. Not a normal person that’s for sure…but when she used a “hair pin” from HER hair to trip the lock of her stepdaughters diary, well then I really had to throw in the proverbial towel. There really was no useful information to go on for this character. I have no idea how old she was, what she looked like, how she dressed, what kind of business she ran, or why she wasted her time on some awful teenager she had only known for a few months prior to the wedding. So, yeah a swing and a miss for me. You don’t need to read it because I’ve given you more information than reading the entire book twice will. Moving on.
I’ve been reading many books by this author and have enjoyed them all. She’s from Ireland and writes about it’s beautiful landscape. In this book, newlyweds are spending their honeymoon in Ireland. On the first morning after arriving, the husband disappears while jogging. What follows is a crazy story in Ireland that continues in California. I don’t want to give anything away, but the action starts almost immediately and doesn’t let up until the end. It kept my interest throughout and keeps coming until the end.
New to me author, read this for a book club... wqas not disappointed. The twists were good.... I thought I had an idea who was involved, but then I kept being led to second guess myself. So that was annoying (in a good way) and super funny..... definitely will try more from this author. It was a total page turner.. I really needed to read this to find out what the heck happened and who's fault was it.

💙🚫⛔Review💙🚫⛔ Looking for a kindle unlimited book that has a lot of twist ? Well I have one for you.
What if you woke up the first night on your honey moon in another country and your husband was gone? Totally Vanished without a trace. What would you do ?
I love N.L. Hinkens books! This book has so many twists and turns that keep you reading to see what happens next! You think you have it figured out but nope your surprised again. The only down fall to this book is that in the middle of the book it DRAGGED on for way too long. For me that is what brings it down to 4 stars. I can't wait to read another book by her.
Ms Hinkens has a real knack for ruining your vacation in her Treacherous Trips series. In this installment, Abby has finally found love again after her first husband's death and is on her honeymoon in Ireland. On the very first day, she wakes up to an empty bed. Oh well, Declan is a runner in training for a marathon so he must be out for an early morning run. Except he never returns. Maybe he fell off the cliffs where the wind is really strong. The author was very good at capturing the atmosphere of the area and its creepy beauty. Imagine Abby, in a foreign country, alone, where she barely speaks the language and certainly does not know the land or customs. I could feel her panic and pain. The police begin to suspect her when there are no clues and no body. She extends her trip but finally has to return home to try to raise Declan's teen daughter. When she sees a woman who looks like Declan's first wife, supposedly dead in a drowning at sea, Abby begins to wonder if Declan had something to do with his "disappearance." There are so many unanswered questions for Abby that I kept reading to find the answers. Is Declan really dead? Is his ex-wife alive? Were either of them plotting this? Did the cottage hostess's strange son have something to do with it? Is it all about money? I enjoyed finding the answers to these questions and more, and I promise you I wasn't anticipating the answers. Ms Hinkens did an excellent job writing a well plotted, atmospheric mystery with wonderful realistic characters. I always enjoy her stories. Thank you for giving me a copy.
When Abby's husband, Declan, disappears on their Irish honeymoon, Abby's life is turned upside down. After weeks with no sign of Declan, Abby returns to their home in Los Angeles, where her sullen teenage step-daughter awaits. As Abby attempts to pick up the pieces of her life, Declan's past comes back to haunt her.
I have read a number of Ms. Hinkens' books to date and this one is, by far, my favourite. I thought the pacing was excellent for this genre. I thought the characters were generally interesting. I really liked the whodunnit elements as well.
While I know this would have had an impact on the pacing, I do wish there had been an introduction to Declan, as well as more information about Abby revealed. While Abby's personality was well rendered, I did feel that a lack of details about her: basic description, what she does for a living (that allows her to afford to take so much time away from work with no visible consequences) would have fleshed her out even further. Moreover, the fact that novel begins with Declan not being home robs the reader of understanding their relationship, and, in fact, forming any opinion about Declan whatsoever.
There were elements that stretched my credulity a bit far that I wish had been addressed differently (such as police allowing a family member to accompany them as they question witnesses).
Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next book.
If you love an astounding psychological thriller with twists and turns, you need to read N.L. Hinkens books. Read the synopsis of this book, and you will want to read her latest book.
Abbey, a widower, has found a second chance at love. But on the first morning of her honeymoon in Ireland, her husband Declan disappears, and she gets a note saying, “We have your husband.” Her life is shattered. Since there is no body to prove a crime has been committed, Abbey is allowed to return to the US where Declan’s daughter awaits their return.
Once back in the US, Abbey spots a woman at the airport who causes her to think she saw a ghost. It is her new husband’s first wife who supposedly drowned, but her body was never found. As Abbey begins to search for answers to her questions, she reveals a web of lies and finds herself the prime suspect in her husband’s disappearance.
Masterfully written, the pacing of the story is perfect with great twists and turns and interesting characters.
I have read several of Ms. Hinkens’ books and have given them all either a four-star or five-star rating. But I can never give much detail as I want you to be as surprised as I was. One thing you can always count on with N.L. Hinkens’ books - nothing is ever quite as it seems.
I received an Advance Review Copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved While She Slept by N.L. Hinkens. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading While She Slept. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Who does not love a psychological suspense thriller with a surprise ending? Once again N. L Hinkens has shown that she is a master storyteller. I love how she developed the story line and the characters. It was an incredible psychological suspense thriller and has me guessing who was behind all the events taking place in the story. It was impossible to put it down and I loved every moment on every page of this wonderful page turner. I love that the story is told from the perspective of the main character. I loved getting inside the thoughts and feelings of the character. I love all the plot twists and turns in While She Slept. I never saw the identity of the kidnapper in the story until it was revealed. It truly took me by surprise. While She Slept is the story of honeymooners Abby and Declan Cafferty. It is the second marriage for each of them, and Declan has a teenage daughter, Brynn. Abby and Declan rented an Airbnb in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland. On the morning following their arrival, Abby wakes up alone and assumes that Declan has gone out for a run since he is preparing to run a marathon. It soon become obvious that Declan was kidnapped, and a ransom demand is made. Abby pays the ransom after demanding proof of life. Declan is still not returned, and he cannot be located when the kidnappers reveal the drop off location. At one point Abby assumes that Declan conned her out of her money. As Abby returns home to Los Angeles and believes that she sees Declan’s first wife, Lynelle, who was presumed dead in a boating accident heading to board a flight to San Francisco. Abby hires a PI to investigate her sighting of Lynelle. Mysterious events occur with the PI and Lynelle following Abby’s visits with each one. There were many layers to solve what really happened to Declan. I loved following the investigation, even some of it was bittersweet. I love how the story details what really transpired to Declan. My favorite part was the surprise ending, I did not see it coming. It was an incredible thriller. Looking forward to reading more books by N.L. Hinkens. Looking for a great thriller, then I highly recommend While She Slept.
While She Slept is a standalone Psychological Thriller and the latest addition to Hinkens' Treacherous Trips Collections. Abby does not seem to be destined for a very happy life. After losing her husband to Cancer a few years back she has fallen in love again and is looking forward to a new life with a new husband and his daughter. They travel to beautiful Ireland for their honeymoon when tragedy strikes her again. She wakes up one morning to find her husband missing. At first she isn't too surprised as he is a runner training for a marathon and they agreed he would keep up his training schedule even on their honeymoon. What she did not expect was that he did not return. A massive search begins to locate her husband and I am going to leave you here to discover what happens next for yourself by reading the book.
Hinkens writes a story that keeps you guessing and surprises you with twists and turns. I have not yet been disappointed by one of her books and look forward to the next.
I received an ARC of this book. My opinion is given voluntarily.
What a wild and crazy ride this was! I was captured right from the beginning when Abby's husband disappeared during their honeymoon. When Abby was dropping off ransom money, I did feel some thrills, excited to know what was next. In general, throughout the book, Hinkens leaves the reader curious. Most times, I didn't see what was going to happen, which is one of my favorite things - the not knowing!
I will say that Abby's character did bother me some. I think it was because I felt she was a bit reckless with her own life. Picking up and flying to a new place to find someone who was presumably dead just felt all wrong to me. It's way too risky for real life. If I had to pick another point, it would Abby's relationship with her husband was light. Though I can see why the author chose to not talk about the background, I was hoping for something a bit more.
Overall, this was a wonderful thriller that was exciting to read every time I picked up my Kindle. The little areas that I mentioned earlier did not spoil my enjoyment of the book. Can't wait to read Hinkens's next book!
Abby and Declan visit Ireland on their honeymoon. Looking forward to an idyllic vacation abroad, Abby awakens after their first night only to find the other side of her bed empty. Remembering that Declan vowed to continue his running regimen Abby thinks nothing of it… until he doesn’t return. After a harried search ensues with no sign of Declan, a ransom is asked and Abby decides to pay it to have her husband back. But the kidnappers grab the money and flee, leaving Abby with no clue where Declan is. Upon returning to the states she prepares for life as a single stepmother to Declan’s 16 year old daughter. But after spotting someone in the airport who looks suspiciously like Declan’s first wife, who drowned several years before, Abby begins to wonder if she’s lost it. She begins to look into the death of Declan’s ex wife and discovers that things aren’t all they seem to be. Someone knows exactly what happened to Declan- can she figure the mystery out before she ‘s next?
While She Slept, by N.L. Hinkens is a fantastic psychological suspense thriller which had me guessing right to the end Abby and Declan are honeymooning in Ireland when he goes missing during the early morning, on what Abby assumes is his morning run training for a marathon. The author has spent time living in Ireland and this is reflected in her descriptive writing of the area around where the search in County Clare takes place, to no avail. With no firm leads as to what has happened Abby returns to the United States to support Declan's daughter and continue running her business. Hinkens is a master at skillfully weaving a plot which explodes with twists and turns, and creating characters who deviously carry out the treachery. There is plenty of suspense to keep you reading While She Slept in one sitting and anyone who enjoys this genre will find it a great read for a wet day . Thanks to the author for an ARC in exchange for a review.
Abby feels contented as well as excited marrying Declan after her first husband succumbed to cancer. Or so she thought..
When Abby wakes up delighted on the first day of her honeymoon on the west coast of Ireland, only to find that her life is fated to be entwined with a disastrous tangled web of mysteries, lies and astonishing twists.
WHILE SHE SLEPT grabs me from the beginning, and the suspense intensifies, layer by layer, as pages turn; and then I was totally mesmerized by the thrilling twisted plots that had me holding my breath and heart-pounding till the last page!
N.L. Hinkens has the knack of satiating her readers who crave the suspense and the twists and turns of her thrillers! I have read “The Invitation” and now “While She Slept”, I’m undoubtedly satisfied, and l enjoyed them tremendously!
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
I’ve read or listened to several of this author’s books, and this is my favorite so far. It’s full of suspense and twists. It’s a little slow getting started, but after the first 17% of the book, it’s difficult to put down.
The story is told from Abby’s POV, and I often questioned her decisions. No spoilers, so I won’t go any further with that statement, but there were times I wanted to yell at her or shake sense into her! I had several questions along the way, but every one of them was answered by the end.
If you like suspense and twists with a little heartbreak thrown in, this is the book for you! I’m looking forward to reading more of N.L. Hinkens’ novels.
While She Sleep by N. L. Hinkens is suspenseful and pulls you into the story with detailed descriptions of the characters and environments that they are in. It starts with the main characters, Abbey and Declan Cafferty, taking off to Ireland for their honeymoon, leaving Declan’s daughter behind. Soon Declan disappears while out on a morning run and Abbey is thrown into a nightmare. Many are suspect, including Abbey herself. As she continues the search, both in Ireland, and in her home in the states, Abbey finds more and more mysteries around Declan, his dead wife and their daughter. What happened to Declan? Is he dead or playing a cruet trick on her? An exciting story that is not to be missed!
Never a spoiler in my reviews and no rehash of the blurb here! Here's what you REALLY need to know: Another twisty, turny, mystery thriller that stands up to any bestseller mystery on the market today! This well-written and hard-to-put-down story immediately sucks you right in and will keep you furiously swiping the pages on your Kindle if for no other reason to find out where things are going with Abby in her quest to get to the bottom of it all because definitely, things are not what they seem to be. People and situations are NOT what everyone is led to believe and really have the reader questioning what's going to happen next! Easy to read as a standalone but you don't want to miss the others if you haven't read them. I recommend this book, this author, and this series!
Abby was on her honeymoon in Ireland. When she wakes up one morning, she finds her husband gone—missing.
“My husband of two days has vanished without a trace in a foreign country.”
Abby spends the whole time negotiating with kidnappers that have taken her husband hostage. Four weeks later, her husband was still missing. Afterwards, it becomes a mystery of whether her husband scammed her and if his first wife faked her own death. Of course, this gets even better when murder gets in the mix. Whatever this mess was, I was sure it involved the missing husband in every way. The mystery gets even better when Abby gets arrested for murder. Whoa, what was going on here?
Although the title of this book implies sleeping, I stayed up way past my bedtime because I just could not put this one down. All of the author's books are fast paced and twisty, but this one takes it to a new level. I usually pride myself on predicting a book's twist ahead of time but I was not able to predict any of the many twists in this one.
As an aside, I loved my trip to Ireland and this book does a fantastic job capturing that lovely place. I just know now not to go there on any honeymoon!
ARC given freely by the author and my opinions are my own.
While She Slept: Treacherous Trips Collection - Standalone Thrillers , my eighth amazing read from author N.L. Hinkens. I enjoyed the outstanding suspense story-line with its intricately woven twists and turns, more knots than Alexander the Greats Gordian Knot, I never saw the end coming! Norma (N.L.) Hinkens is on my radar of great authors! I was given an Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily reading & reviewing it. Narrator Amy Deuchler's narration added to the book's enjoyment. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
I lost sleep reading this book. I had to keep turning to the next page to see what would happen. The characters are well fleshed out and relatable. The suspense and the twists had me second guessing every idea I had until the jaw dropping reveal. Ms. Hinkens comes up with some amazing twists, which makes me a fan. If you enjoy Twisty thrillers, While She Slept is a must read. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
To put it nicely, this book sucked. The narrator is an insufferable idiot who constantly makes stupid decisions. The book is written like it belongs on wattpad and that’s an insult to those authors. We’re never given any chance to like the characters in the book it’s just immediately thrust into the missing case of her husband. And as the reader, we don’t know him so there’s no missing him. And we don’t know her, so there’s no sympathy for her. It was bad. Bad bad bad
Declan's first wife was declared dead from a boating accident. Abby and Declan have a second chance of happiness and take a honeymoon to Ireland. Declan goes missing and a ransom is demanded for his release. He is not found. Abby has to return home and at the airport she sees Declan's first wife. A thriller I could not put down.
