When Shawna Nicholson, Chief Resident of an Iowa hospital, treats an emergency patient who came from the future with multiple wounds and amnesia, neither Shawna nor the mystery man is prepared for the deadly pursuers determined to destory Shawna's patient and anyone who tries to stop them. Author Reichert draws upon her experience as a doctor to add a realistic edge to this sci-fi thriller.
Mickey Zucker Reichert (pseudonym for Miriam Susan Zucker Reichert) is an American fantasy fiction author of several best selling novels. Perhaps her most famous work is the epic Renshai series, which offers an intriguing perspective on traditional Norse mythology. She is also a parent and paediatrician with a soft spot for critters great and small. She has been known care for a veritable zoo of creatures, at times including mice, horses, snakes, llamas, parrots, squirrels, possums, and foxes.
Alongside her twenty-two novels, Reichert has also published one illustrated novella and fifty-plus short stories.
A man is found battered and bleeding on the sidewalk of 1980s Iowa. He wakes up in the hospital with only flashes of memory, vastly confused by the 80s. He goes on the run with a couple doctors after mercenaries try to kill him.
For something with a plot involving amnesiac soldiers traveling through time, this is a stultifying book. Every single action is described in nauseating detail. The characters are boring, their romance is boring, the plot is boring, and the bad guys are "Arabs." That's all--just "Arabs." Their motivations are never really explained, and they're all killed off in nameless bunches. They're basically there to show how cool and collected in the face of danger Jack Carrigan and Shawna Nicholson are. And then, uh, some more gun battles and then they kiss at the end. Yay.
While I enjoyed reading The Unknown Soldier, there is no denying that it has some flaws. The plot is a bit thin, character development virtually non-existent, and it is not exactly original either. But for some light reading it worked well.
