Months have passed since the earthquakes unleashed hell on Earth, and it’s a miracle has Apryl survived each one. Without her glasses, she can’t see a thing. She’s a walking liability. Thankfully, she’s the only one who knows it…for now.
When she’s kicked out of her home for being “lazy,” she receives an offer from a man willing to take her in even though she had no experience with gathering supplies. It’s an opportunity she can’t pass up and accepts without even asking his name. Or looking up at him.
She never thought one of the fey would take her in. But now that she has food and a warm place to sleep, she’ll do whatever needs doing to keep her new home. Even if it means falling for a fey.
MJ Haag is the bestselling author of the Beastly Tales and the Resurrection Chronicles. Writing as both MJ Haag and Melissa Haag, she has sold more than three hundred thousand copies worldwide and authored several other series, including the Judgement of the Six and Of Fates and Furies.
She thinks bios written in third person are hilariously pretentious and doesn't take much in life seriously, including her author photo.
She lives in Wisconsin with her three children and husband.
Apryl asks Scath to house her (thinking he was human). Scath accepts. They plan a meeting point/hour. Scath and Fallor walk around discussing their doubts. Apryl kisses Fallor by blind mistake. Scath still agrees to house Apryl, but now there's this awkward tension. A girl gots to do what a girl gots to do during a post apocalyptic world. She offers her body in lieu of payment. But of course Scath is already in love with her. So, miscommunication and awkwardness and misunderstanding ensue.
Now repeat that, several times, from her perspective, from his perspective, when they go over and tell each of their friends; and include bits and pieces of characters from previous books and future problems the community needs to tackle.
And circle back to square one. That's the book.
While the book was sweet, you felt the sweetness, the naivety, does he/she really want me business and repetition was annoying AF.
I would like to preface this review by saying that this is the first book of this series/world that I have read. So I don't really have any attachment to this series or much knowledge about what has come before and my opinions should be taken with that in mind. With that out of the way... let's get started!
Spoiler warning, read at your own risk.
This was not good. It wasn't terrible really, but it wasn't good. There was an utter lack of plot and an insta-lust that tried to masquerade as a semi slow-burn. Scath and Apryl had zero chemistry besides lust.
I was also really not a fan of the way Scath and the other fey males were so obsessed with babies. Wanting babies is fine, but the vibe felt pushy. They have a literal discussion about killing as many bad guys as possible so that their wives would agree to have their babies... as if that's the only reason someone wouldn't want to have kids! And then, despite the fact that Apryl very clearly states that she doesn't want kids, when they have sex (which was really lacklustre by the way) the topic is completely ignored and they don't even make any attempt to prevent pregnancy or come to some conclusion... because they are so overwhelmed by lust... ahem "love". That really felt icky to me and it's not something I can really get over.
Besides that, the character interactions are just awkward and cringe worthy for most of the book. Apryl's big secret had an absolutely lame reveal by Scath, considering that the whole point of this book was Apryl's problem with her vision, the resolution was really too easy.
All that to say, I will not be paying money for other books in this series. They really aren't worth it to me.
How unfortunate. There was such a big deal made out of her blindness that his casual announcement that he knew she was blind was so low-key that I almost missed it. I had to go back and reread to make sure that’s what just happened. It really should’ve been something in his point of view instead of it being in her point of view. The story seemed rushed, and I know it was short, but there was very little there. I really expected a whole lot more from the storyline. Still love the series overall. Some areso much is better than others. this one even the relationship just seemed out of nowhere and rushed and not very coherent .
I received a free copy through Booksprout in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.
4 stars — This book was filled with lots of misunderstandings from not communicating, but for once I felt like that all came from a reasonable place on both ends. It had all built up from the experiences of EVERYONE (human and fey alike) since the earthquakes. Fey had been given so many different pieces of advice to keep their hearts safe from being taken advantage of. And the rumours that had spread to Tenacity had done the whole situation a bit of an injustice, so that Apryl didn’t know what to expect, or what was expected of her. And while I actually got where it was all coming from, I still have to admit after awhile I got frustrated.
It was also a bit slower build as a result of the misunderstandings, which was a bit of a bummer, but we did get to see Apryl and Scath connect on a different level then. I loved how caring Scath was, and how you could tell his feelings were growing for her even if he had fixated on her right from the start. And I appreciated that Apryl fell in love with Scath without seeing him well…and that his appearance didn’t change her feelings.
We got to see glimpses of quite a few other characters, and there was a much anticipated event at the end of the novella that made me smile even as my curiosity was further peaked.
I can honestly say that I loved that the author chose to explore a zombie apocalypse for someone with seriously impaired vision. It isn’t something I think about, but Apryl’s experiences really brought it to life!
Though I jumped into this post-apocalyptic series at book 10, and had very little idea what was going on, I didn't hate this novella.
Apryl is a human who is hiding her very poor eyesight from the people of her community. Her handicap makes her vulnerable. She can't see anything clearly, so when a man offers to let her live in his home, she jumps at the chance. She's willing to offer just about anything for a safe place to live.
Fey Scath has seen Apryl from afar and is instantly drawn to her. Like all his fey brothers he knows when he has met his perfect woman. Unfortunately, humans are fearful and distrustful of the fey, despite everything his brothers are doing to help the weak humans survive, hoping to prove themselves and be rewarded with willing and loving mates.
The MCs each have preconceived notions of what expectations the other holds toward them. Scath is devoted, but worried his attention will make him seem desperate. Apryl is convinced she is a burden with nothing to contribute, and that Scath will replace her at the first opportunity.
It was a cute little story, but as I was 'going in blind', I was pretty lost regarding the zombie threat, and exactly how the Fey appeared in the first place.
Poor Apryl. She's so misunderstood and spends nearly as much time punishing herself for it as others do. When she's kicked out of her home because she can't pull her weight, one of the Fey decides to help. Scath has been keeping an eye on her as well as he's been able to. He knows something is different about her, but he isn't sure he's the one she wants. Through a series of unfortunate (or fortunate) events, Apryl ends up leaving Whiteman for Tolerance, and it is there that the real adventure begins. She has to navigate her surroundings - and her building feelings - and the confusion follows her and seems to spread to those around her as she tries to figure out how she's going to survive and what to do with her growing feelings for a Fey who is trying to win her affections, but when it comes to love, he's just as blind.
I love these stories and wish they could just go on indefinitely. These characters have been such a joy to read, and the situations are something I've never heard told before. It will be a shame when it all ends, but I will soak up as much of the Fey as I can while they're still alive in these books.
This is a fierce five-star read. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as some of the other stories in the Resurrection Chronicles, this is best read after Demon defeat part one, as it has that flow to it. I enjoy getting to know the characters better, but it did feel a little clunky at times. But I think that may just be me, it’s been a while since I read the last story and probably should have had a refresh. This also weirdly helps me deal with one of my irrational fears, as it made me realise I’m not the only one thinking, what would happen in a world shaking event where I have no glasses or medication I need to live being produced any more. What do you do, well you read this and watch Apryl and Scath as they tell you about their journey and reveal more to the story, but also reveal more questions that I am dying to know the answer to.
Demon Blind is a perfect example of why I love the Resurrection Chronicles world! This story has a great heroine, Apryl, who struggles with real life problems even though she is in a crazy zombie infected dystopian world. And then of course there is the fey, Scath, who is so dedicated and caring even when he doesn’t understand Apryl’s motives at all, he just wants to be there for her in any way he can. This is such a cute novella and I am so glad M. J. Haag decided to be distracted and write Demon Blind because I always want more fey stories and am so sad there is only one more left to come. Hopefully more fey will bother her into telling their stories too. 😉
I couldn't put it down, I wanted to wait till morning to start it and just couldn't and then, yes I was up all night finishing it. I love that we get both points of view, and the slow burn, it was amazing and very real including the miscommunications.
Have you ever wondered how people who need glasses do in an apocalyptic situation? I have, with no more contacts being produced, frames breaking or your glasses falling and being lost, what would you do? Add to this that a fan asked this question and the author found a character with this problem and its suddenly a must read.
While you could read this as a stand alone, I highly recommend starting at the beginning of the series.
Another great side story in the resurrection world! I love these books so much, they are so fun to read and I find MJ Haag’s writing style so engaging. The characters were interesting and it definitely opened up new questions on how people survived the early days of the quakes - pure luck for some I think! I adored Scath and thought their relationship was well written and flowed naturally. It was also super sexy! AND THAT EPILOGUE!!!! Anyone who has read this series absolutely, must, without a doubt read this book! Cannot wait for Demon Defeat Part 2 and more fey.
I couldn't put it down! Read it every available second. I absolutely love the double POV's! Another amazing book from Melissa. I love the fact that that Apryl couldn't see very well without her glasses. And what an ending! Finally, finally we have a little closure of one of the couples. But I still want more of this series! I will never be done with this series. It's a great one to repeatedly read. And I have, many times. This is a must read series if you like zombies and apocalypse.
I liked this story but also found it frustrating. The miscommunication/lack of communication made me want to throw things. I liked how everything ended up working out. The twist with Angel’s baby confused me and really didn’t make sense to me at all. It was entertaining though and I recommend reading this book for yourself and deciding if it’s something that you like.
This story was so interesting for the fact the FMC was blind as a bat in a apocalyptic world with no glasses or contacts! As someone who wears glasses this would be my biggest fear during an apocalypse! So I read this book on that alone. I've never read a book before where the main character needed glasses!
Overall, the book wasn't horrible. Very repetitive and the miscommunication situations are my least favorite. But I'm all here for an obsessed Fey male who falls first.
This story tells of an earthquake that struck the planet and brought with it a virus that turned everyone in to a killer, but some people managed it servive along with some fay people and thy came together which they needed each other to service .I would like to say thank you for all your hard work and may fortune smile 😃on you always 😁from a bookworm that loves to read
As a glasses wearing girl, this one hit closer to home. Loving seeing the human and fae interactions from the perspective of a female who is hiding. Loved seeing more of everyone and seeing the towns from a new perspective and presenting some new solutions. Can’t wait for more.
What can I say. Melissa Haag does it again with this series. I don’t want it to end. I can’t wait to see how she writes the story regarding the infected. It would be nice to see if they change into another species of people. I mean the world isn’t the same anymore so why not right something different. I guess I will have to wait and see.
Wow! Just like all the one books I couldn’t put this book down. I loved getting to read both points of view. I really liked getting inside the mind of the Fey and wait they really thought of their women an just how loving and protective they are of them. I loved how Scath made sure Apryl could see and made her a pair of frames so he could see her happy. Can’t wait for the next book!
This has made me sit up and take notice.....I Want A Fey too.....The ride it took to get together made for moments of wtf I think this was a wonderful look at relationships communication and true passion ..April you go girl and epic baby bombs loved it truly another must read M.J .you got me hooked curl lol
The story was cute and I really liked the MMC, but the FMCs constant self-doubt, never-ending need for reassurance, and the continuous misunderstandings was extremely frustrating. MMC did everything he could to reassure her, but she kept thinking the same things over and over and over again. It just didn’t end.
What a time for poor Apryl! My eyesight may not be as bad as hers, but I couldn't imagine going through an apocalypse without my glasses. Scath was so sweet. It will be bittersweet to read the very last book. We've come to love these fey like our family.
Another excellent addition to the Resurrection Chronicles! I can totally relate to this FMC -being blind with out her glasses! This was an enjoyable book that I would gladly re-read again! Love these fey men, wish I could find one for me! LOL
It was cool to see how someone with a “disability”, like very poor sight, was able to survive and thrive in this new world! And the moment we’ve all been waiting for was awesome too! Can’t wait for the next book in this series!!
This was actually pretty light and funny I wished for more information on Angel baby but was happy with the glimpse at the end. I really did like Apryl because she knew what she wanted and wasn’t embarrassed about it. Scath was great really enjoyable
Loving this series! It’s wish it could last forever. Scath and April were so cute together. I loved that he wanted to take care of her, but did so in ways that allowed her to do things for herself. He understood she needed to contribute and not feel like a burden. Such a sweet story!
A fun short story in the resurrection series. Very relatable and as always the demon hunk is very sweet. I love this world Melissa haag has created. ( wouldn't want to life it though! )
