Sass Denman is tired. Tired of being unemployed, tired of being alone and tired of the sickly smell coming from her floorboards.
But a chance conversation leads her to Sean Tallis, a lizard-loving private eye with a maverick approach to the law. Their routine case soon uncovers a missing girl with connections to an unsolved murder from the past. Has the Skin Thief returned after lying dormant for a decade?
As the evidence mounts, the trail leads to Saskia’s flat in Bosworth House. Petty problems confound her neighbors, each one more sinister than the last. Why is the cellar door padlocked shut, and will the arguments in Flat Four never stop?
Who can you trust when you’re hunting a killer and all the clues point home? A psychological thriller with a killer twist that will keep you guessing to the very end.
Jacqueline lives in Gloucestershire with her husband, son & delinquent border terrier.
She spends her free time writing, researching her extensive East Anglian Family History and rambling through Gloucestershire’s beautiful countryside with border terrier in tow.
Saskia Denman is introduced to an arrogant Sean Tallis, a Private Investigator, because there's a job listed. But Sean is caught at a bad time and Saskia doesn't want to work with Sean anyway. But she knows she's the best fit and she needs to get back into employment. Both are as stern as each other but they don't butt heads. They have a job to do, and with years under their belt they excel at what they can bring to the investigation. The writing at times is stiff but the book is a worthwhile read with a great twist to the story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A excellent story full of unexpected twists and turns sasskia is a strong character with a military background. Were as Sean has a police background and has become a private investgater. Set in the cotswold area. If you enjoy the Lawrence Harpham books I would think you would also enjoy this story set in today's time frame. hope this becomes the start of a series featuring Sass and Sean, private investigators. Only time will tell hopefully the author jacqueline Beard will be encouraged to write more stories using these characters in the future.
Jacqueline does write creepy books. The book is a mix of lot of issues that plague us even today. Maybe , it is true that our school days help shape our destiny. Some rise above the odds and are good citizens and some choose to become evil. It was really not my cup of tea - too dark for me personally, but it is well written, suspenseful and creepy. I loved both the main characters. Reminded me of one of my favourite show 'The Elementary'.
This psychological thriller is the kind of book you have to stick with. The first part is really compelling and fast paced. Then it gets really kind of slow and drawing out, but you gotta stick with it to get to the end because there's a reason why the author draws everything out for about a hundred pages. The end is really satisfying, and I think there's definitely room for a sequel or a prequel
This was the first book I read by this lovely author. (I then fell in love with the Cornish books) I really enjoyed this book I found it very engaging. The characters were relatable and the only thing I don't like is that there's no more books in this sequence. So I do hope we get to learn more about our new friends. Thank you
Sass needs a job and Sean needs an assistant/partner in his PI business. They are not the ideal team to start with but they seem to gel after they get into their case "helping" police with a case the police didn't seem to be treating as a crime. It's an uphill struggle for Sass with all her baggage but together they solve something that has gone on for years.
Easy reading, but enjoyable. I liked the relationship between the main characters and the way the tension built gradually as the story progressed. Definitely want to read the next book featuring Denman and Tallis.
I loved the book. I had a hard time putting it down.. The book was a great mystery who is doing it kind of book. I have not read in a while, and I am so happy this was my first book.Great story...
Story draws you in from the first chapter. How can people be so cruel that grudges, long held, create a monster. The perpetrator, so cunning, everyone is fooled until the last chapter. A must read.
Loved this book. It kept me guessing, every time I thought I was so smart and had figured out who the Villan was more information came to light which proved me wrong and had me guessing all over again. Chefs kiss for the ending.
Someone is playing nasty tricks on the residents of a flat of apartments. Then it turns deadly. One of the residents is a former police officer. She investigates and all hell breaks loose.
I was a bit bored with this story. There were a lot of characters with backstories but I wasn't interested enough to buy in. I did finish it but found it forgettable. I was pleased with Sinbad's outcome but the rest...meh.
I enjoyed reading this book. A lot of guessing who was behind all the abuses, blood and gore, but done in a way to keep you on edge and reading until the end.
A new start and a new flat for Sass Denman, and even hopefully a new job that will help pay the bills. But she did not bargain for being in the wrong place at the wrong time; living in a flat where sinister, spiteful happenings occur; where these things turn to murder.
What a brilliant read! I really enjoyed this - creepy and exciting, full of suspense. I hope this becomes the start of a series featuring Sass and Sean, private investigators, as I am already a fan!
