Everyone thought he was a God.
But I knew he was the Devil.

I thought I would never see Dominique Reed again after he broke me. He destroyed me.

It took two years for me to pick up the pieces and put myself back together.
We were never supposed to see each other again but Karma had other plans.

I was the fat chubby girl everyone made fun of.
He was the gorgeous player everyone wanted.

I was a nobody.
He was the basketball star destined to be great.

He said I was enough.
That my beauty was skin deep.
Now, I’m different and he is even more attractive but I’m not the same girl he once knew back in high school.
I might accept his apology but he wants more.

Wow! This story was so intense and so full of emotion. I loved Sabrina and loved how strong she was, and how she loved herself. I also really felt for her, and all that happened. I think I kinda hated Matt and Dom for a bit until they were able to redeem themselves...well at least one of them anyways. The chemistry between Sabrina and Dom was sizzling, and I loved how supportive their friends were. This was such an entertaining and enjoyable romance.

This is the first book I have read by Carmen Rosales and it did not disappoint.
Romance during high school isn’t usually my go to place when it comes to reading romance books but I was pleasantly surprised when I finished this story.
I love how the author wrote the main character as curvy, this definitely needs to happen in more books as us ladies come in all shapes and sizes and are all amazing regardless of how much we weigh or look like.
The main male character ….. no spoilers , he does mess up but I suppose his reasoning is valid , in his eyes anyways.
Plenty of drama , love scenes and a beautiful ending that leaves you wanting more.

This is the story of Sabrina, Dominique and Matt. They are all Seniors in high school. Sabrina is a fat girl and is picked upon by everyone. Matt has been her best friend since 3rd grade. Dominique is the hot basketball star who is a major player. Sabrina has a crush on Dominique though no one knows. One day Dominique catches Sabrina at a basketball game and finds out she is the mascot. He blackmails her into helping him stay organized in lieu of keeping her secret. Their relationship develops but then he betrays her. The rest of the book takes off 2 years later when all 3 are back together.

The writing was ok. I liked the beginning. Sabrina seemed somewhat strong and sure of herself but that was smoke and mirrors. I felt like the story devolved very quickly. I really did not like any of the characters and did not connect to any of them including Sabrina. Sabrina gave in too easily to Dominique. She had no spine and pretty much let everyone walk all over her - this included Dominique and Matt, especially 2 years later. She forgave everyone just because they said they were sorry and went back to them as if nothing had happened. There was a love triangle but it didn’t add to the story at all. It just made them all seem even more immature. I was unsure why anyone was falling in love with anyone else. It seemed like lust and not love - mainly because the author really didn’t show us any real redeeming qualities to people. There was a lot of telling and not enough showing. Things told to show how devoted the H was to the h just made him seem like a hoodlum. I never really bought into either Matt or Dominique loving her for who she was.

I did like that the heroine was Puerto Rican (at least on Dad’s side) and that Dominique had ADHD. I liked that even though Sabrina was fat she was happy with herself, and that the author also showed the downside of being fat in terms of medical issues which Sabrina had to deal with. Overall, though, I didn’t find the book interesting or believable. The characters were immature and parental reactions were ludicrous. I cannot recommend it.

I NEED MORE ASAP PLEASE!! My emotions are in OD right now and I have the biggest smile on my face but I really want more of this couple. My heart broke for Sabrina a few times while I was reading and the ending was perfect. She deserves the world and then some. I hope Carmen gives Monique a book next. 🖤🏀🔥🏀🖤

I have fallen in love with this author's writing. This book was a little lighter from what I've read from her, but I have to say that I have enjoyed all the books I've read from her thus far.

Changing the Game has certainly made my heart sore for Sabrina for what she endured with the two boys in her life. One being her best friend and one being her crush since Freshman year of high school. What she never knew was that her best friend always harbored a crush on her and always wished she reciprocated it as well.

When Sabrina and her high school crush finally get to talking and get to knowing each other and she realizes that he's not what everyone made him out to be (really) she falls hard for him, but then somewhere down the lines things start falling apart and Sabrina suffers a health condition due to this downfall and it's all due to Dominique and Matt (her best friend) is enraged and wants to look out for Sabrina. Sabrina is so hurt she decides to leave to be with her dad and enrolls at Berkeley to try to get away from all the toxicity that she has left behind.

Let's fast forward to where she has to go back closer to home and enrolls at Alabama University and she runs into her x-best friend and later on runs into her x-whatever you want to call Dominque being to her and she tries to be a different person but we are who we are and she was all about second chances. She tried to give the guys a 2nd chance. It might have worked with one and not the other but one certainly had to work his butt off to show her how much he was willing to changed and/or to explain to her the reasons for his shameful acts towards her.

I have to say that at a point I was a little conflicted with the boys and couldn't decide which was better for her but in the end she chose wisely. You do whatever you can to redeem yourself and the boy who showed her that he would do whatever it took to show her that he was serious about her, certainly was serious about it and proved it.

Well done, and I loved the characters and secondary characters, especially the friends she made in college. Those were certainly true friends to her (go Sabrina!)

I am reviewing an arc copy given to me by Book Sirens.

So spelling and getting Jake,Jeremy, James character all one name is easy.

I loved Sabrina. I would give five stars for her alone. She's strong and confident when we meet her even though she's bullied horribly in high school. She knows she has like four months until graduation.

I loved her mascot job. I liked her friend, Matt.

Her crush, Dominique makes a deal with her. She doesn't trust anyone at school besides Matt, so this developed slowly.

I'm not going to repeat but there comes a night that every bad thing that can happen to her, does!

I cried.

So Part 2 has her starting over at Alabama University where she makes friends and also runs into people from high school.

Sabrina's made significant changes in her lifestyle and lost a lot of weight and apparently is beautiful.

I like how the author incorporated health and fitness in Sabrina's transformation plus making nice girlfriends.

College does offer second changes for her and she gives second chances.

I like how author doesn't fully give away who Sabrina ends up with until who is completely ruled away. That was what held my interest.

I did not like Dom humiliation of that girl nor breaking James' hands. It did not endear him to me at all.

And there were plenty of sex scenes, including her losing her virginity, that fit the mood of the book but near the end , Dom screwed her publicly (people saw) and another time he discussed anal and it seemed to cheapen where they were headed by "too far" (too OTT).
That's where I subtracted review stars because otherwise it was an entertaining story. I loved Sabrina!!!!

Bullies are cowards. They pick on anyone who is different through their own insecurities.

Dom is a football player and Sabrina is the smart girl that everyone makes fun of. She takes it all on chin and doesn't allow the bullies to see how upsetting t is. They are cruel and ruthless. Her only friend is Matt. She trusts him and can confide in him. Dom catches her in her mascot outfit and they make a bargain. Blackmail really. She agrees to help him organise his life and he will keep her identity quiet. The thing is that she has had a crush on him since the first time she saw him, but he is the popular guy who is out of her league.

After High school, they go their separate ways. She is glad to get away from all the hurt and humiliation. Just before she goes off to college, she has the most unfortunate set back. Anyway, she picks herself up and goes off to college. She has finally got away from the torments. What she doesn't expect is for her past to follow her. Here again, she is deceived by someone she considers a friend. Has she completely escaped Dom? Is he still the player that she knows?

It's a good concept and the characters are complex. The love triangle is frustrating at times. I like the way Monique and her other college friends give their support. It's emotive and easy to read. The writing is pretty fluid, except for a few mistakes. That doesn't take anything away from the content though. An enjoyable read. The ending is worth it.

I received an eARC from BookSirens and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

I'm not sure where to start with this one. The high school part of the books left such a sour taste in my mind. If this is an indication how kids treat each other in the US I'm so glad I live far far away. None one and I mean no one deserved Sabrina's forgiveness. I get being young and stupid but that... That was damn right cruel. I don't want to go into it more because I'll have to include spoilers and I'll let you decide how you feel about it.
Dominique : I'm not sure how I feel about him. As much as I wanted to hate him, he did do a few things so right I did smile and felt a little compassion for him. But all that still didn't erase the past.

Now I want to talk about what I did like:
Sabrina: she was the bright spot of this whole book. I was not impressed with the way she forgave Matt (her BFF) and Dominique because those two needed to beg more but OK.
Her new group of friends : they supported her and I loved them for it.

I'm giving this book 3* because I'd rather see her falling for someone else who hadn't been connected to her past but I can't say it was all bad. Hopefully the next one will be more up my speed.

has potential

Changing the game is a coming of age, second chance romance by Carmen Rosales.

I wanted to really love this book and it has potential, but I had some problems with the storyline, characters and editing. I don’t want to put any spoilers so I will say the relationship between Sabrina and her supposed best friend Matt was not a good one, the way she was able to bounce back between love and hate with him was sad and by the end of the book there was no closure.

There was a good chemistry between Sabrina and Dominque and I enjoyed the angsty start to the romance, however when they reconnect a few years later I felt it was rushed and in large part to the time devoted to her supposed best friend storyline.

There were quite a few editing issues and a few issues with the wrong persons name being used, which was confusing. On a side note, it was kind of off putting on how many times people would comment on how beautiful Sabrina was, especially Dominique’s father towards the end, it really doesn’t add to the story.

I recommend the book of you go in knowing the issues because I do like the potential of the book. I look forward to reading a future book by this author as she continues growing in her writing journey.

This is my first encounter with one of Carmen Rosales’ books and whilst I enjoyed reading this book, I also found it frustrating at moments.

This book seemingly covers the story of 3 main characters, Sabrina, Matt (Sabrina’s best friend) and Dom (Sabrina’s crush). I loved Sabrina’s character. She’s had some pretty rough experiences but she has gotten through them with grace, strength and even forgiveness. Forgiveness that is in terms of Matt and Dom, whose behaviour, actions and treatment of Sabrina leave a lot to be desired.

The subject matter of bullying and friendship betrayal are always difficult to cover, but nonetheless are unfortunately real life situations.
However, the detail of Sabrina’s set of friends at college who support her was really a lovely touch.

The kept my attention right to the end, was easy to read, included drama, angst and enough steam and heat between Sabrina and Dom. Was a little rushed towards the end and not sure that I agreed with the ending, but definitely feel it is well worth a read.

Ok, this was a hard book to rate. I had fun reading the story and because it was a latin soap opera through and through.
At some points it was hilarious and some other times I rolled my eyes so hard I felt they could never recover their original form, but throughout the entire story I was entertained and that I appreciate. Especially after being on a big slump and not being able to finish many books (I’m ashamed to recognize).

The idea was great but the proofreading and editing needs lots of work. Sometimes the scenery changed without continuation. The character development was confusing and many words and expressions were repetitive.

But I liked Sabrina’s journey and her recovery towards health. Also, how she emotionally managed to recover and be aware of her wellness.

Matt sucked and Dom could grovel more, but ok.

Too many telenovela twists

Let me begin with that I did find this story unique, it's not often that you have a chubby heroine who captures the love interest of two school jocks, so big up for that idea.

So, the story started strong and well described, we got to know Sabrina and her everyday reality pretty well, she is a strong young woman that stands up against her bullies. But the more the story goes on the weaker she becomes, it's kind of a triangle drama and they play her pretty well.
And despite that, both heroes hurt her pretty bad she doesn't make them work to gain her trust.

I'm kind of allergic to weak heroines aka doormats, so I had a hard time understanding her actions.
A big minus is also the telenovela twits, there are too many of those, too much back and forth for my liking.

I inhaled this book. Sabrina and Dom's story is not the picture perfect love story, but their story was perfect none the less. Sabrina is the pretty chubby girl in high school that is smart, funny and always willing to lend a helping hand. When she gets caught in her mascot costume it's by the last person she ever wanted to see her. Dom is on the fast track to make it to the NBA. The last thing he needs or wants is a girlfriend. Sparks fly between these two, but it definitely was not a HEA at first. My heart hurt Sabrina and everything she overcame. I was really disappointed in Matty. His character shocked me the most. This story had me mad as hell, sad with tears and rooting for Dom and Sabrina. This book is steamy hot and full of drama and I was here for all of it!

Not My Favorite . . .

Sabrina is a chubby girl throughout high school whose brains and personality sometimes don’t make a difference when the bullies find someone to put down. Dom was a basketball star in the making. He got involved with Sabrina and hurt her. She even got involved with a long-time school friend, Matty, and that didn’t turn out well either.

It was difficult to like the characters in the story. I prefer strong women to stand up to the bullies of the world. And guys who use women poorly for whatever reason do not become heroes to me. Everyone is out for themselves, and immature high school drama drives me crazy. Sabrina should have left her heart broken and moved on, no second chance. Neither one of those guys was worth the effort.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I was not disappointed. This is the story of Sabrina, a smart curvy girl who is made fun of by almost everyone at her high school. She has one friend, Matt. She is also hopelessly in love with basketball player, Dominique, but he has no idea. Sabrina agrees to help Dom with time management so that he's not late to things that are important. Things happen and he ends up betraying her in the worst way possible. Thing happen and 2 years later, they run back into each other. Will things be different this time?

I enjoyed how Sabrina made a life for herself and the best out of a bad situation. She was tough from the beginning, but she became even more so and stood up for herself all the way.

Apparently Protagonist Has A Shield But Never Acts It Out. The man gets to set the pace as always, and never face any consequences for how he repeatedly.makes her feel.

It would have been nice had we had the hero actually choose be better.

Instead he's still onlt narcissistically reacting by the end of the book.

Jesus, is there never going to be a Romance heroine that chooses Abortion or are we stll this Gentrified Patriarchial and Classist?

Imagine in a Post-Roe v Wade the women writers are still bobbing along making young girls culturally and hus mentally and thus physically unwell.

A girl with a shield wouldn't have been love bombed.

How utterly unrealistic but then its the chronically sexless that write these books.

Changing the Game…

I hate to give a negative opinion but this dialogue was so stilted!

Ok, the basic premise is simple and it reminds me of every rejected mate werewolf story I’ve ever read. So this wasn’t all that interesting to start with. After her incident, we fast forward a couple of years and she’s in top shape, healthy and at a good weight. She exercises and takes her medication religiously. And her best friend happens to be at the college she transferred to.

He’s actually not the MMC but the jock that she helped in high school is. It gets good but it’s too cliche when she eventually end up pregnant b

Fast read, and about average because it’s good, but it’s not fantastic at all. Sorry!

Amazing!!! I absolutely love everything I have read of Carmen’s and this book did not disappoint!! Sabrina is a chubby girl that everyone makes fun of and Dominique is the gorgeous basketball star who is tall, dark and tatted!! They are in their senior year of school just trying to make it to college. They run into each other one day when she is putting on the mascot costume, she wants that to stay a secret so they make an agreement to help each other out. They are so many ups and downs in the story I just couldn’t put it down! Such an amazing book that I will buy for my bookshelf.

Could not put this down. I thought this was just about Sabrina and Dom but enjoyed the third point of view helped you cheer for Dom to be the hero even tho he doesn’t seem like one. As a fellow curvy girl it was nice to see how Sabrina never tried to hide from it very refreshing. Loved her take no shit and stuck up fro herself. I would really love to read an epilogue for Sabrina and Dom see how big of family they end up with. Highly recommend this read.

I enjoyed this book. This is the second book I have read by this author and I am really enjoying her writing style. I loved Sabrina. She has been through so much and comes out stronger. I enjoyed Dominique and thought he grew so much over the story. The story does take place during high school then college. Small warning: they do have other partners during the story. This did not take away from their story but I always like the heads up. I would recommend this book!

Changing the game, this book was so intense and emotional. Sabrina is the perfect FMC from beginning to end. Even with all the bullying she went through in high school she was so sweet but she definitely found her voice. The back and forth with my feelings for how Dom and Matt were 😮‍💨😮‍💨 at least one redeemed themselves. I loved this book and the ending was amazing. 🥰🥰 If you want something that will get you all in your feels with a happy ending this is it!

This book was okay. I liked Sabrina but I wasn’t a fan of Matt or Dom. I feel like she needed to end up with someone else because honestly neither of them deserved her. The other reason I gave this 3 stars is because there were a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes and some unnecessary repetition. Those things made it confusing to read. It needs some major editing and proofreading.

Bullied in high school Sabrina becomes close to popular guy Dom. Tragedy happens and she loses both her best friend, Matt and the guy she loves Dom. A few years later she transfers college to be closer to her mom and hometown. She is now at school with both Matt and Dom. Can things be repaired? What will happen? This is such a great read.

The plot and idea was good but the delivery was lacking. Aside from the fact it needed editing and character names changed throughout the biggest execution issues were swapping scene location or timeline without any break in sentences and the ending from Spring break onwards. It was so OTT that it devalued the message of the book.

Changing The Game

This was another fantastic story by Carmen Rosales! The storyline was really interesting and different from other books I have read. The book held your interest throughout. Each of the three main characters in the book were really well developed because they showed both their strengths and weaknesses. Carmen is a gifted writer and really portrays the Latin. culture beautifully. As usual I can't wait to read another of her stories!

Sabrina has been in love with Dominique since freshman year. They strike a bargain but it doesn’t turn out like either of them anticipated.
Years later they are at the same college. Will all love be lost or will the truth reveal itself. Love really does change the game. This is a good book with a great story line. Had me laughing at times and I even a few tears.
