So far Condon manages to take everything that worked on the previous volume and built up on it. The second book was better than the first and now he tops himself again. The dialogue is still great, the characters are the heart of the story and the case this time isn't only intriguing but also sinister and creepy. He clearly understands what worked best and takes it a step further.
Of course when it comes to comic books, you also need an artist who can express all that visually in the correct way. I think Jacob Phillips is a perfect partner for that.

I don't know if this will end up being the last volume. If it is, then it's a shame, because the series is very very good. On the other hand, it will mean that it definitely ends in a high note.

I kind of think this series improves with each arc. The plot is again quite basic- a serial killer roaming in Ambose county- but again Condon and Phillips manage a suspenseful volume with carloads of empathy for the protagonists.
It’s 100% character-driven but since the characters are great the deal is good.

This series has really found its footing. After volume 1 being just ok, vol 2 and this vol 3 have been pretty damn good. Here, a serial killer known in the southwest has made his way to Ambrose county where sheriff Joe is. Book opens up with his first gruesome murder here in Texas. From there the cat and mouse game begins as they try to find this Red Queen Killer, as they call him. Condon did a great job building up the suspense as the sheriff and company try to narrow in on this killer while he takes another life. Same time all this is going on, the sheriff election is coming up and the guy running against the current sheriff Joe has used a tragedy from the past to try and turn the townspeople against Joe. Jacob Phillips art continues to be great throughout this book. Will definitely check out the next volume.

Whoa now that was suspenseful. You don't see snow westerns very much, but if the last few years show us, it can get real snowy in the lone star state. A depraved serial killer haunts the town, and our fateful sheriff has to catch him. Final issue or two get real tense, the visual storytelling alone is gripping, as you're flipping pages scared of what's going to happen. Best volume yet, I'm happy this series has improved each time.

There is some serious tension building in this story. I would have liked to see the timeline move forward from the first volume, but regardless, we get great storytelling with solid art.

This series is getting better with each book. And the first one was already perfect. I can't wait what this duo has for us in the next ones, because damn, it's getting pretty bloody.

This series gets better and better!
As a huge fan of John Carpenter's Halloween, this arc ticked all the right boxes for me. The mystery is compelling, the protagonists are likeable, the antagonist is terrifying and, most importantly for this sort of story, the atmosphere of the small town encased in the winter snow storm is effectively captured.
Condon and Phillips knocked this one out of the park! Can't wait for more!

The third arc of That Texas Blood diverts from the grounded crime thriller and takes a turn towards a more classic slasher tale. In the 90s we find Joe Bob dealing with the "Red Queen Killer", a serial killer who has come to Ambrose County in the midst of a freak winter storm. There isn't much of an investigative approach as there was in the previous volumes; instead the deputies of Ambrose County are playing defense against an enemy they simply can't comprehend. The RQK is an enigmatic force of nature, with very little known about their modus operandi. Condon writes a well-paced thriller, one that kept me invested all the way through the end. Though the mystery isn't as well fleshed out as it was in the very first arc, the mystique behind the RQK drives the story very well. The ending might leave a little to be desired in the minds of some readers, but I thought it was elegantly done and it worked really well for me.

Jacob Phillips continues to show substantial growth over this series as well. Even though the artwork does have some passing resemblance to his father's work on the Reckless series, Phillips does some really great stuff with atmosphere building that feels unique to him. The story in Vol. 3 takes place amidst sudden snowfall, and Phillips' use of color and empty space to sell the setting is remarkably well done. The RQK is a menacing threat largely due to Phillips delivering some stunning panels with excellent lighting effects and use of heavy black inks. The artwork is crisp and moody - everything you need from a horror comic (and I would definitely consider That Texas Blood Vol. 3 to be more horror than crime thriller).

All in all, a solid return to form for me (I wasn't the biggest fan of Vol. 2). One of my favorite titles from Image over the past couple years easily, and I hope to see more from this budding and formidable duo of Condon & Phillips.

“The paper said “Coates Ends Carnage”. It was a lie. I dint end nothin’.”

“That bothers you?”

“Every. Day.”

Young Sheriff Coates hunts a theatrical serial killer who has blown in to Ambrose County during the worst blizzard of the 90s! Obviously the only move to follow up “An Even Younger Coates Vs. Hippie Death-Bat Cult” but still, just some goddamn effective comic books.

It’s like every time I’m like “I’m just gonna read one or two of these and I’ll save the rest for later” and then it’s two-three hours later and I’ve devoured the whole thing. I don’t know if a series has brought that out in me lately like this one has.

I love that Condon is still somewhat drip feeding Coates’ backstory and the bloody, almost impossible history of Ambrose County throughout each arc. I would say this is maybe the most substantial piece we get here, but even that doesn’t feel like major give for the comic. The last panel of him and Martha and their (until now unseen young son) absolutely devastated me after the sustained tension of the main story. Red Queen Killer don’t fuck around y’all. It rules rules rules.

Also ruling is the way Philips details snow and breathing in cold weather. I can’t think of anything or anyone that’s done that better lately than here. It was marvelously blocked and rendered throughout. arguably the best looking Image thing going rn? I would have to read some more I think to make it definitive but for my money, this thing looks incredible always and that’s a big win for it in general.

Bring on #20. I’m a fan for life now. Texas Blood Forever.

Joe Bob is the sheriff of Ambose County in Texas. After witnessing the death of his predecessor, he struggles with the guilt while a campaign is ongoing to elect a new sheriff. As if that was not enough, the Red Queen Killer is in town and has announced his arrival in a gruesome way. Joe must stop the killer before it is too late.

Another great story of crime full of tension. The clock is ticking as Joe must find the killer who comes to disturb the peace of what should be a quiet little town. Or is it? Joe's predecessor did not die of all old age in his bed after all. It's great to see this part of the story connect with volume one, making us appreciate the full talent of the writers as they already had those pieces figured out back then. It's also great to follow Joe and his struggles and to see him overcome those. It's a message telling us that doing what we know is right is not always easy and will not work perfectly, but it will still be the right thing to do. I hope to see more of Joe Bob in the future, but I believe this third volume is the last one. Too bad this did not become a long-term series like Scalped. Still, I highly recommend it.

I should probably go back and bump up Volume 1 of That Texas Blood to three stars. I gave it two because at the time I thought it was just way too derivative of No Country for Old Men, but in retrospect it's a lot better than these two stars I've just given Volume 3. It seems Chris Condon is growing bored of the characters he introduced us to in his small town Texas world of law enforcement. It also seems he has run out of gas with his arsenal of literary allusions because we've gone from some interesting Hamlet ideas in Volume 1 to some weak-tit Lovecraft fare in Volume 2 to this sad tip of the hat to Alice in Wonderland in Volume 3. Nothing here is interesting or well thought out about the Red Queen Killer in his creepy homemade Chesire Cat mask, and Volume 3 with its Criminal Minds style serial killer storyline isn't anything to get excited about. It's not bad; it's just dull and uninspired.

I liked the first volume of this series best, and I sort of hate the cliched Halloween serial killer kinda stories, but it would appear I like this better than my two-star of the second volume. I guess I rate this 2.5 stars, 2 stars for the standard story, nothing surprising, with lotsa Texas blood especially for this small town. But I like the developing artwork of Jacob Phillips, which is why I picked this up. And why I bump this from 2 to 3 stars, I guess. And I see it is at an early release time pretty popular, good for them.

In the first volume the awshucks local yokels seem kinda funny--these Texas folks talk with such a strange accent, and so on--as stereotyped as they are, but there's not much in real character development here.

Modern comic books (especially superhero ones) have a tendency to rush through their stories and cram as much action in per panel as possible. That Texas Blood feels much more cinematic. It understands how framing and pacing creates tension and suspense. The storyline here is simple, but it allows the writer and artist to take their time and get the most out of their characters and the situations they find themselves in. Couldn’t recommend this book enough. Can’t wait to see what happens in the series next.

A rare winter storm is approaching Ambrose County, Texas, in early 1992. A woman's body is discovered, believed to be the latest victim of a serial killer known as The Red Queen Killer. As the snowstorm hits the town, the local police warns residents to stay at home. But can this really guarantee their safety?...

As with the others I've read in this series, volume 3 is a superbly cinematic tale, chilling and wonderfully illustrated with sharp dialogue. These books are a great example of how graphic novels bridge the media of films and novels. Highly recommended.

Mmmm, this is some quality thriller writing. A Texas sheriff in the midst of a political battle has to stop a roving serial killer who's come to his small town. All this against the blizzard of the century. The tale moves along at a creeping pace, neatly building suspense even as it never really veers from the expected narrative. You'll fist pump at the big conclusion, assuredly. And the art looks great. A highly recommended winter read.

Each arc has gotten better than the previous one. The suspense and art/page layouts/pacing in this one are next level crime storytelling. One of the best books on the market right now. Haven’t been collecting comics for a few years now but I can’t wait for the trade of The Enfield Gang Massacre as a big western fan. Hope Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips continue to tell stories together beyond just TTB.

Great art, good story-telling and a simple, moody story revolving around a creepy masked killer. I thought it might have a pay-off reveal of the killer (this is my first read of the series) but the conclusion focuses on catching the killer and the repercussions for the characters who crossed his path.

In the third Volume, Condon and Phillips take TTB for another unexpected turn towards the slasher genre. An element of horror mixed with crime, this story arc focuses on a serial killer named The Red Queen Killer. Terrifying and slow-to-build, this is their best story yet. Highly recommended for fans of crime and horror!

Tercer y mejor volumen de "That Texas Blood".

Interesting of this series to just do a no motives offered serial killer story that amounts to a weaker X Files episode. Still not sure there’s anything worth reading here but I continue to read it so who’s to say really?

The tone shifted dramatically to like a weird Fargo/80s survival horror and I'm here for it. Doesn't give me Texas/Western vibes at all like the first two volumes, which is pretty strange, but I think the artist just wanted to do a bunch of snowy scenes lol

Texas Noir.

Another fantastic installment to this series. Condon and Phillips craft a tension-filled tale in rural texas. The stories of this small town and its world-weary sheriff are so engrossing. I eagerly look forward to what is next from this creative duo.

This volume was actually a little run of the mill, a typical slasher story with no big reveal at the end as to whether there was a connection to our characters or Texas - just a random psycho, it seems. A bit disappointing and one dimensional.

I've been in love with this series from the first volume, and I think this might be the best one so far, maybe even one of the best crime thrillers i've read too. A very thrilling and cinematic experience that had me on the edge of my seat.
