Supernatural Academy #1

Supernatural Academy: Anno Uno

Rate this book

2-2.5 Stars - I think I'm being generous with my rating because this book really got on my nerves. However, I did manage to finish it in two days so the story interested me enough to give it a couple of stars. It had so much potential to be a great book... Atlantis storyline, academy setting, five hot supernatural guys (even if it's not RH), mean girl subplot, and my favorite...an all-powerful, badass, special Mary Sue. (I know many readers hate these girls, but I read to escape and prefer fantasy over reality). Unfortunately, it didn't deliver. There just wasn't enough happening and it dragged. A whole lot of talking, but not much action. I would have loved more about Maddison's academy training, more of her mysterious connection with water, and definitely more battles. Instead, I got way too much unnecessary filler that didn't advance the story (dances, shopping trips, every meal described). Even the conclusion, which had a little action, was rushed and underwhelming. However, my biggest complaint about this book is how completely shallow it was. Seriously, about half of it consisted of detailed descriptions of every single outfit, worn by every single character, every single day. Over, and over, and over. Hair, make-up, shoes, and a whole lot of... 'Girl, you look hot! No girl, you look hot!' I have a headache from all my eye rolling. Moving on.

Don’t have partially strong feelings about this one way or another. It was quite middle of the road.

My first impressions were ”Jaymin you’re such a bitch for not making this RH” when you introduce 5 guys at the same time who give me Abcurse Deja-Vu it’s pretty cruel to then make it a normal MF romance.

But once I realised this is branch of the supernatural prison series then it makes much more sense for this to be in the same vein. There’s some character crossovers which was cool and I’m familiar with the world already

Maddie (the FMC) is quite quickly whisked off to supernatural academy where she finds somewhere to belong for the first time in her life ... yada yada... rises form the ashes of an abusive background... etc ec ... orphan...unidentified powers emerging... blah blah fill in the blanks because you’ve read this before

She meets her lifelong friends within the first 5 minutes. Drawn to the 5 “most beautiful powerful men” in those same five minutes while also catching the attention of all the school bitches

I could not do a review without that gif - read it to find out why

She’s a snowflake with an attitude
She’s likeable but also..not
Powerful but also... not.
Romance but also... not?
So I'm finding this hard to review as you can tell

But it wasn’t all bad. It was entertaining without knocking my socks off. There was some unusual supes and that at least something. It was lengthy so not rushed which was nice.
If you like Jaymin's other series then I'd take the odds that you will like this too.

Am I exited for the next

Set in the same world as: the Supernatural Prison series

"But this year, the year of pink hair, was all about firsts. First formal dress. First use of magic. First assassination attempt.
Look at me go."

I'm honestly not sure when was the last time I was this undecided with the rating of a book, due to its numerous ups and downs:
✅ cool magical system
✅ fast paced action
✅ side characters
🆗️ strong"ish" female MC
🆗️ Plot twists - not utterly unexpected but not really super predictable either
❌ insta-love
❌ insta-friendship

》》The Plot《《

Maddison James always did two things on New Year: turn a year older and change her hair color. But apparently pink hair brings trouble. Because she feels the whole "Ye're a wizard, Harry" scene on her own skin when a girl shows up and reveals she's part of the supernatural community and takes her to a magic academy. If Maddie gets to go through that at 22, I guess it's not too late for our Hogwarts letter either, right? Anyway, back to the plot; at the academy (cool magic system, no complaints here), nobody knows in which of the four groups she belongs: vampire, shifter, fey or magic user and she shows great potential even if there's a lock on her magic. The year goes by, Maddi having to figure out what she is, how to deal with the Clovers (magical version of Mean Girls) and what to do with the group of 5 hot, powerful and illegally beautiful guys, the Atlantean-five. Especially when Asher is part of them and he just happens to be the closest thing to a God she's ever seen.

"I could already tell that this Academy was like high school on steroids, filled with magical creatures born of myth and legend."

The book is written from Maddison's perspective, the action moving pretty fast through the first year at the academy. While the story was interesting, I was deeply bothered when things happened randomly, without any sort of built up and those moments gave me the feeling the writer hadn't actually thought about a way of getting the characters out of those situations.

》》 Characters and Relationships《《

Well... I'll mess a bit with the format I usually use because this book is that chaotic with its characters and relationships.

🧝🏻‍♀️ Maddison James

“You’re diff—”
“If you say different,” I interrupted, “I’m going to punch you. Don’t separate me out from other women. They’re my people.”

That was the scene where I loved her. The rest she was just OK, on the good side of my character radar, but not exceptional. Anyway, the weird thing with her was that she didn't seem written with a pattern in mind; she was a loner who run away from people and in the first hour at the academy she's officially best friends for life with two chicks she had just met, she states she doesn't want trouble and will stay away from the Clovers but provokes them the first chance she got, she knows the Atlantean-five are strong and dangerous and was decided to stay away from them but goes all smartass and rude from the first conversation ... I just felt she wasn't very consistent in her actions.

"There was a waterfall … under the damn ocean.
I had so many questions."

Also, POPPY BALFOUR, is this you here??? (Sorry,  From Blood and Ash reference)

But back to Maddison, what I liked about her character is this new year new hair color thing. Really fresh idea, or at least, it feels like that for me.

👩🏻‍🦰🧛🏾‍♀️ Ilia and Larissa

Ilia and Larissa are the two girls Maddi becomes BFF with on the spot (literally, insta-friendship). Ilia is a magic user who works to track down supernaturals from all over the world and bring them to the academy, extremely bold, confident and let's go for eccentric. Larissa, on the other hand, is a super shy vampire who, despite being the daughter of the principal and having been to the academy for a year, doesn't have any other friends.

Then we have the Atlantean-five:

🧑🏻‍💼 Asher Locke

“If there was any such thing as a god on Earth, Asher Locke is as close as you’ll get.”

He's the strongest supe at the academy, the magic user with the most Atlantian blood and the love interests, making him the male MC.

🦁 Jesse

"Jesse was green-eyed, dark-skinned, and a lion shifter. He was one of the biggest guys I’d ever seen in my life, well over six and a half feet and built like a linebacker. He was also really hot. Atlantean-level hot, because I was starting to think that they were definitely their own race of supes."

Do I need to tell you more? Also, he was really sweet, after Axl who was very nerdy so his sweetness came from that too.

🧑🏽 Calen

"He was big, well over six feet, dressed in stylish and expensive clothing. I noted his pretty-boy haircut, brown hair that was longer on top, and flashing eyes that were a shade of silvery brown."

He's another strong magic user and he's very flirty.

🧛🏻 Rone

"Rone was even broader across the shoulders than Jesse, which was quite a feat. His features were beautiful. I mean, a fallen angel from the sky beautiful, with that golden-blond hair and icy blue eyes framed by long golden lashes, defined cheekbones, and a strong, angular jaw."

Of course, we also get a cold vampire with a traumatic childhood.

🧑🏻‍🎓 Axl

"He wasn’t as tall or built as Jesse. If anything, his muscles were long and wiry, like a runner or long-distance swimmer. He had messy auburn waves, and those eyes, which were a beautiful shade between gold and silver."

He's definitely the brains of the group.

AND LET ME TELL YOU THIS: I do not, in any way, go for reverse harem tropes (unless they are written by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti, then I'm all in) and it's definitely something I still consider weird but this book had the perfect set up for that. I complained about the insta-love going on, but I swear, if Jaymin Eve would have spent as much time in building Maddison and Asher’s romance as she spent on setting the grounds for a RH that never happened, this book would have been so much better. Don't believe me? Look:

"If a shifter offers you some of their food, it’s about more than just sharing. It’s about pack. About even … romance, sometimes.”
I swallowed hard. “So, Jesse was like … shifter-style flirting with me?”

You have Jesse flirting with her in whatever shifter way Lions do it. Then you have Calen hitting on her. Multiple times.

“So, we’re on new girl babysitting duty,” Calen said, and he waggled an eyebrow at me. “I’m taking the night shift.”
I pointed a finger at him. “You step one foot into my room and you’re going to leave without your balls.” He opened his mouth, but I cut him off. “And it won’t be in any fun sort of way.”
“Spoilsport,” he muttered.

That's just one small example and it's definitely more than Asher did up until that point anyway. THEN you have her waking up with all them all around her:

"The next time I opened my eyes, it was morning, and I was literally surrounded by male bodies. Calen was at my feet, almost curled around them, and I resisted the urge to nudge him in the ribs.  Jesse and Asher, who each had an arm over me, tightened their hold, stopping me from moving."

I mean... come on... this has RH written all over it. Even Ilia knows it.

“Ilia was pretty adamant that she wanted to see you. I’m afraid she wasn’t happy about the ‘no outsiders’ rule for our house, but in the end she relented and gave me your bag.” He held it out to me. “She also said that if you didn’t have—” He cleared his throat. “—a six-way with all of us, then she was greatly disappointed in you.”

Hell, I think even Asher knew it!!!!

Asher just shook his head. “If you all could stop hitting on Maddi, that’d be great. She’s here as our friend. Okay? She’s one of us. An Atlantean. That’s a bond deeper than you all trying to plant your dick in her.”
He leaned in closer. “Different rules for me,” he murmured, and my blood boiled again, my body aching.

I rest my case.

I'm not saying I wanted a RH, but I'm pointing out that's where things were leading. Especially with the way people fell in love in this book (I swear, it felt like 90% of the romantic development happened off script).
*MINOR SPOLIER ALERTS AHEAD *
And don't even get me started at how Ilia was more than half of the book with Josh and they were portrayed as a super good couple to have them breaking up in legit 3 sentences and then suddenly have Calen and Ilia as "a thing" that apparently also involves feelings. That came out of absolutely fucking nowhere. The same story goes for Rone and Larissa. Just out of the blue, no built up and simply for the sake of having Maddison's friends paired with Asher’s. And I'm not saying it's bothering me to have them like that, but there was legitimately NO BUILT UP for that.

My rant is over.

》》 Favorite Scenes《《

🧝🏻‍♀️ Maddison thinking about Asher

"I wondered if I should have followed the redheaded chick’s advice and worked out a safety for if I fainted. Asher was lethal to females everywhere. And probably half the males."

👩🏻‍🦰 Ilia's lines and her way of thinking
💧Maddison pushing through the barrier at her Water Elemental lesson
👗Damon showing interest in Maddison at the dance
🧝🏻‍♀️🧛🏾‍♀️🧑🏽 The talk about girl power interrupted by Calen

“You can’t be part of girl power,” I told him, not so politely snatching my stroganoff back.
“Why not?” Calen said, sounding completely affronted.
I raised my eyebrows. “Uh, let me think of the reasons. One: too much dick. Two: Two too many balls. Three: Not enough awesome.”
“So much dick,” he agreed. “You have no idea how much dick. Wanna find out?”

🧑🏻‍🎓 Axl being Axl
🧝🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🦰🧛🏾‍♀️ The girls getting drunk and swimming naked in the pool
💤 The guys being worried about Maddison

“Are you sleeping?” Jesse asked me as I flopped onto the couch with him. “Because—and please don’t take this the wrong way—you look like crap.”
“Smokin’ hot crap,” Calen said, entering the room, bottles of beer and wine in his hands. “You’re always hot, Maddi, it’s just that the circles under your eyes have circles now.”

🧝🏻‍♀️ Maddison deciding on her new hair color

》 Conclusion《《

The book had a strong Wattpad vibe, with the way it was written and how certain things were handled. I thought a bit about Zodiac Academy while reading it, because there were a few similarities, but this one is definitely more suitable for YA then Zodiac Academy. I was frustrated with the writing style and the things that happened in the blink of an eye, but I was also kind of addicted to this, so taught guess whether someone might enjoy this series or not. Is it a masterpiece?  No. But it's still exciting to follow as long as you don't expect a "bulletproof" plot and you don't mind the insta-love and insta-friendship. Will I still go on with this series?  Yes, I will try. I'm curious enough to keep reading it and I'm curious to see if Jaymin Eve's writing can impress me. I've read the Secret Keeper series from her as well and, again, while the story was good, the way it was written and the fact that all the characters had that insta-love going on made it impossible for me to love it. So I'm really curious if all the series are like that, because, if that's the case, I might have to give up on the author.

"In one week it was my birthday. Before I met with anyone and changed the fate of the world, I was going to change my hair.
New color had always been synonymous with new fate for me.
Let those fate-bitches do their best to take me down. The year of pink was over.
It was time for something different.
The year of purple."

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Not For Me*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

The book centers around Maddison Marie James (22) who's been on the run since she was seventeen. On her birthday she was found and brought to the Supernatural Academy and her life changed forever. In this new world, she has to find out who she is, while dealing with the supernatural. Overall, this book was not for me. I had expected so much more from this author! The book lacked some serious depth, and the timeline going from a month here to a month there didn't work. I felt like I didn't get to know any of the characters and the romance felt forced. I didn't connect with any one, nor did I particularly like any of the guys. None of the stood out, and the main male character didn't feel all that. He's supposed to be this all powerful, leading man, but I felt nothing. I skimmed a lot. I don't think I'll continue with this series, because I didn't like it, nor did I like the main character. I truly felt nothing for them.

The Atlantean-five:
They’re kind of a big deal around the Academy. Not brothers, but they all grew up together and are as close as family. They stick together. You mess with one, you’ve messed with the lot. And they’re powerful. Three mages, one vamp, and a lion shifter. The Atlanteans were an ancient race of magic-user-fey, and not a mixed race, but their own race, who were the first to cross from Faerie to Earth. They had a strong affinity for water magic, but most of them died when their land sank to the bottom of the ocean. The ones who escaped, their descendants are always extra powerful.

Asher Locke, magic user - of water. He is the strongest, the purest of lines, but the other four all have Atlantean blood too.
Jesse, shifter - lion. The quiet one.
Calen, magic user. The flirter.
Rone, vampire. The moody.
Axl, magic user. The genius.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Upper YA/NA) Paranormal Romance.
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Asher Locke.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - No.
Will I read this again in the future? - No.
Rating - 2 stars.

"Knowing I have you guys in my corner... it means everything. I would cut a bitch for you. Girl power, my friend. This is girl power."

description

I guess I'm out of my reading slump, or trying to. This book took me a while for that reason: my reading slump has last at least 3 months, and I'm slowly recovering, lol.

I'm still debating so hard with this one.

Maddison James lives a "normal life", moving on from city to city and changing her hair color every year on her birthday, january 1st... Until a tracker finds her and tells her that she isn't human and has to go to an Academy to learn how to control her power or she will be dangerous for the humans, yada, yada, yada.

I like books with the academy / boarding school trope, because I missed my teen years due depression (that's a story for another day, lol) and so, I think they're pretty cool, entertained and a little bit refreshing. I like the idea of making new friends who will be with you fighting darkness and that kind of shit.

This one, however, didn't feel as much as I expected (that's also why I don't make illusion with books in general).

Maddison is recluted by Ilia and she goes to the Supernatural Academy. But there's something weird with Maddi: she doesn't know where does she fits, in which specie: demi-fae, magic users, vampires, shapeshifters, etc.

Year One is basically a high school with people of 20+ years old. We have the girls who think they're superior than everyone else, the irrelevant people, the daughter of the princeps and the hot guys who don't mix with the other kids, and that also are so fucking powerful because why not? Maddi draws the attention to her in the moment she arrives to the Academy.

Maddi falls into the arms of the super popular, hot, rich and powerful boy, Asher. The conection between them two is so goddamn fast. In matter of seconds, they know something is going on between them... The normal thing, right? The bad bitches mess up with Maddi and warn her to stay away from the hot kids. Another total normal thing.

The pace is a little bit fast. Some characters are easy to love or to hate. Maddi is annoying, I still don't know if shelf this book as "badass female mc" or as "stupid female mc" because Maddi was both sometimes. In the second half of the book, I get to dislike her.

Asher was pretty good at the beginning of the book. It was towards the end when he became the asshole overprotective "hero" that believes he can decide over the girl and ugh, I wanted to kick him so bad. AXL IS MY FAVE NERDY HOT BOY, DON'T YOU FUCKING TOUCH MY BOY. Rone was being hostile with Maddi at first but suddenly he's like "I will protect you" and ?????? wHAT THE FUCK!! Jesse and Calen are sweethearts and I must protect them but still, they lack of personality and development.

This is not a reverse harem (I don't like them tbh), even if it feels like that.

While many people likes the bad boy with dark hair, edgy and rude and annoying, I like the hot nerd dude who's always with a book. Don't ask me why, I just know I love that type of guy, yES, AXL, I'M TALKING TO YOU!

I wanted to kick Maddi for being an idiot the 99.99% of the time. She was feeling horny or rejecting the possible idea of being part of an ancient specie and was like "nO wAy I'm ThAt SpEsHuL, i JuSt CaN't", which is annoying as the fucking hell. Trust me, there's nothing that exasperates me the most than a girl trying to pretend that she isn't speshul, when she clearly is it, because hello, the book is of your pov. The girl-on-girl hate was stupid and pointless, because the bad girls don't even work out as secondary characters... And the author ditched them so quick and easily. But this trope is normal in books like this, so.

I'm not complaining, there were a couple of good moments, but some felt really dry, senseless and pointless. This book had a lot of potential and it got kind of wasted. I don't know if my many questions will be solved in the second book or I'll accumulate more, yikes. And I found many plotholes, jsjsjs.

Many characters were irrelevant (and probably used just to fill a gap and show Asher like the asshole he is, yup), the romance between Maddi and Asher a little bit rushed, same between Ilia and Calen... The time in which everything happens is weird. One day can last like 3 or 4 chapters, and a month can happen in one paragraph, which left me kinda confused and annoyed.

It's a 50/50 for me and I guess I will pick up the second one, but not yet because my currently reading list it still a little bit bigger for me, lol.

bUT IF AXL DIES, I WILL RIOT AND BURN THIS WHOLE FUCKING WORLD FOR HIM.

As always, with this author, I adore the world-building! She does a fantastic job at making this magical universe a realistic and believable one. My one problem with everything is the overall pacing, which I'll elaborate on later in this review.

Maddi has had a crappy life so far at 22 years old and it just got so much weirder. I like how sassy and stubborn she is. She doesn't accept everything right away but she doesn't turn into a hysterical mess either. Given time she adapts quite well to her new life. Her relationship with Asher takes a long while to start but after that things take a turn with lots of impossible problems with no solutions.

Asher and all his friends seemed like awesome guys. I don't understand why they're so standoffish to most everyone in the school except the new girl and her friends, but I can let that slide. He seems to like and be intrigued by Maddi just as much as she is by him. They seem like a great couple.

I've been unofficially taking a break from YA for a few months. I've been having the worst luck when it comes to picking out books in the YA section. So I liked how this book took something that would usually be in the 15-17 age bracket and put it into a new adult/adult form. I can't say this enough, the world-building is amazing! The map at the beginning of the book was awesome.

The only problem I had with this book was the pacing of the story. The first half was way too slow. It took over 18 chapters for Maddi and Asher to have a full conversation. The second half felt rushed for no apparent reason because some obscure things started connecting the dots out of thin air and then it ended. If there was one thing this author would benefit in improving in future books it would be developing streamlined pacing for a book/series.

The end wasn't what I was expecting it to be. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for a lot of things to possibly happen but what actually happened wasn't it. I'm interested in what happens next and maybe even getting a series of spin-off books for Asher's group of supernaturals.

My Favorite Quotes:

"This year there would be light, because I'd had my damned share of darkness,"

"Music moves everyone in different ways and it's magic even humans can access."

"Sorry, I sometimes talk without thinking. It's a problem I'm not working on."

Supernatural Academy is part of the Supernatural Prison World. I liked this about the story and we get to meet Louis again. But until now he is the only one of the other series we meet.

I liked this book very much and I am looking forward to read the next part.

This book was hard for me because I loved the characters and I loved the plot and the storyline but I didn't love the execution. The writing felt a tad choppy and disjointed at times and it didn't flow as organically as I would have liked. There were a few parts that I skimmed just to get back to something more engaging and captivating. It just felt like something was slightly missing, like just barely out of reach. Whatever that is would have catapulted this book to a greater level.

After reading the Supernatural Prison series (book 1: Dragon Marked) and the Curse of the Gods series (book 1: Trickery) and loving both, I was super excited to see this book come out. I dropped everything and bought it when it released. Maybe my expectations were too high? I don't know. It just wasn't everything that I hoped for.

That being said, this is a very promising lead in to the new series. I thought the book was interesting and creative and as I mentioned before, I really, really love the characters; main and secondary. I will still recommend Supernatural Academy: Year One to my urban fantasy loving friends and I look forward to book two and year of the purple .

Also, for those who hate cliffhangers, this book does resolve the major conflict from the story so it reads as complete, though there will clearly be a continuation of the story as there is more yet to come with everything that has been happening. You don't need to wait for the next book to come out before starting this one. I would suggest grabbing it up now and meeting these awesome characters and exploring their world at the academy.

Oh and final thought: Shout out to whoever designed this cover. It's gorgeous and totally fits the book.

DNF, this starts with a cliche kid knapping as a plot device to get the heroine where she's supposed to go. Then it gets even more cliche with the heroine just getting over being kid knapped and accepting it all in under an hour.

This is set in the Supernatural Prison world and but it is not at all up to par with that series. There is a lack of character building and worldbuilding throughout. This is a sad disappointment.

Maddison is plucked off the streets and carted off to Europe to the Supernatural Academy. Evidently, she's been putting off bursts of power of an unknown kind and they finally caught up to her. Luckily, the school is pretty cool and beats living on the streets. Maddison learns all about the supernatural races, including Atlanteans, represented by 5 hunky popular guys, but she is still unsure what type of supernatural she is. Asher is the leader of the Atlanteans and Maddison feels an instant connection to him. Could she be an Atlantean? As she tries to unlock her power, she attracts the attention of an outside group and must rely on Asher and his friends to keep her safe.

All in all, I liked it. I thought including Atlanteans in the supernatural races was a fun twist on the usual suspects (witches, shapeshifters, and vampires). Maddison is in line with other FMCs that Jaymin Eve has written - she's likable and quirky, she doesn't take crap from anyone which often gets her in trouble, and she is extremely loyal once she makes a friend. I'll be looking for the next installment in the series, I think it will be fun.

Apparently, I am one of the few who absolutely loved this book. I read Jaymin Eve's Secret Keepers series and fell in love with her writing and characters so when I saw she was coming out with a supernatural series I was all over it.

The world building in this book was spectacular, it felt like I was actually there seeing things as Maddison did for the first time. When Maddi decided this was the year of pink and it was going to epic, she did not expect to fall into a world she did not know existed much less a world she is a part of.

Atlantians are what made this book for me. These 5 guys were each unique in their own right, but they all had a soft spot for Maddi. Eve pulls from Greek mythology which was unique to me and made the story that much more intriguing. All in all, another great book from Jaymin Eve, cannot wait for book 2!!

I love that this in in the same world as the Supernatural Prison series! I was unsure at first, but it is, which is really fun, because we saw Louis! I liked the academy a lot, and that Maddi, the MC, had friends that were female, aside from the guys. I do feel like I have less of a sense of each of them though, in part due to the time skips present. I liked Maddi, and loved her hair (pink is my favorite color) so having her as the MC worked well for me. It was cool to have a magic user MC as opposed to a shifter like Jessa, the MC of the Supernatural Prison series. The plot being based around Atlantis is very interesting, and I'm excited to learn more. I wish there was more detail about her classes and learning to use her powers later on. Good first book of a new series. 4 stars.

I really enjoyed reading this book, i didn't want it it end tho. I liked the mc personality, she was fun, says what she's thinking at the moment, blunt and kind . I liked the atlantea guys, especially Asher ofc ;) i know it's not a RH but i wanted it to be...

I thought Kate would be more feisty, bitchy and nasty, she didn't show up and cause so much chaos as i thought she would. I asume she will appear in the next book

Leider super langweilig ohne wirklichen Inhalt.

I really loved Jaymin Eve's Supernatural Prison original series (not the follow ups).
It had a strong female character, good world building and all.
Fully expected to enjoy her later series like the Secret Keepers and the Curse of Gods.

I sooo didnt.

I dont know why Jaymin decided to cast her heroines in the mould of other YA authors - bold, brash and mostly making obviously idiotic decisions requiring the male hero to step in.
She also lost the ability to build a world different and unique from our own.

In the House of Darken, we had a dumb heroine who just did things she shouldnt cos, you know, she shouldnt have. Makes sense? Not to me.
In Curse of Gods, we had a heroine who started strong but then cos she is sooooooooooo "special" for wholly unknown reasons she snags the attention of all the hot guys. Again, no.

For some reason I thought with Supernatural Academy, may be Jaymin would recreate the magic of Supernatural Prisons. And she didnt.
In this book, you have a powerful God very awfully named "Sonoris" (YAWNN).
You've the usual set of teenagers who control the world (where are all the adults in YA novels!!!)
But all that would have been okay - if Jaymin managed to build a good story.

Sadly no. Her heroine this time started off good.
Maddison is thrown into a new world of Supernaturals and she is struggling to make sense of it.
We are introduced to a set of uber powerful (of course uber hot)guys from Atlantis who keeps everyone at bay.
Asher, the head hottie, is almost God like in his looks and powers.
So far so good old YA.

Then comes the crap.
Maddie had been a loner all her life and suddenly in a day she gets two BFFs who are sooooooo close to her and so suddenly that it defies all logic of friendship.
There is no rationale to why Ivy, a very senior girl who picked up her is so interested in her.
There is no rationale as to why Larissa, a vampire who is shy and friendless suddenly becomes her best friend.
If all this happened in a span of weeks or month, it would be totally understandable.
Instead we have "you go girl" and "Gurrll friend" kinda talk in a day. A day!

And the worst is the chemistry between Asher and MAddie.
There is actually none, except for Maddie being soo hot and Asher again being soo hot.
It bugs me that love and lust is interchangeable in such YA stories.
Love is not just about falling for a guy with a hot bod and always objectifying him.
The way Maddie objectifies the guy, would have been chauvinistic if a guy did it to a girl.

Finally the nails in the coffin?

All the cliches like ultra nasty cheer leaderish sl utty girl gang who spouts nasty comments just cos - you know. Nothing better to make the heroine look good than a set of biyatchy sluttish-looking girls who show unnecessary animosity and clinginess to the hero.
I just cant get why a girl gang made of hot yet who-rish girls called "Clovers" are so feared by the school, if they are such idiots to have trash-talked the heroine in front of the hero.
What kinda idiots do that - trash talking another girl in front of a guy they like?
I would expect a fearsome witchy girl gang to be sneaky and scary but sweet on the face.
But no, Jaymin had to make them stupid and vampy and nasty.
All the more worse so that the heroine can come off all the more nice.

And the lack of any good fantasy elements.
The fantasy elements in this are lame and boring.
There is no build up.
There is no coherent story.
There is not even a reason why the saving of a world is left to a gang of teens.

Overall, this is yet another disappointment.

Maddison James has decided it's the year of pink. Pink hair means this year has to be better than the last ones. The first thing she finds out after dyeing her hair is that she's a supernatural. Even better, they have no idea what kind of supe she is, but she's incredibly powerful. Maddison is quickly whisked away to Supernatural Academy in Europe and begins learning about the various races: witches, vampires, shifters, fae and Altanteans.

I really enjoyed this book, I have no idea why it took me so long to try and actually read it. I ended up caving and getting the audiobook. I think I've been way too busy and actually reading has been about -20 on my priorities list. I digress. I am slightly disappointed this wasn't a reverse harem. When the five hot Atlantean guys, who also happen to be the most popular guys of the school, were introduced I was hoping for an RH.

I ended up loving this story regardless of it being a monogamous love story (at least for now). There were so many little bits about how supes are a lot more casual about sex and polygamy, so I am slightly disappointed there wasn't more than Maddison and Asher. However, I loved them together so much. They were extremely adorable and I loved what their relationship became.

The setting of the school was magical and amazing. I loved that supernaturals went to school for the magical education later in life. I loved Maddison's excitement about the supernatural world and getting to learn alongside her. The addition of the Atlanteans was awesome. I loved the extra mythology this brought in.

I can't believe the next book isn't out yet, I need it!!

Like:
The character are not teens! All of them are 21+
The world is well built.
It's not a RH and i liked the connection with the other guys (non-sexual)

Not so much:
The story is predictable.
The h is the usual clueless girl, with terrible childhood and "mommy and daddy issues" sometimes she comes out a little to bitchy has a defense mechanism!
Their relation is a bit forced...

Funny how Rone didn't knew Larissa existed until Maddi came. What did she do now that she didn't do before? And Calen? He didn't know that Illea existed before too? And all of us hype our friends but these girls are throwing too much "you're goddess" around that it's starting to feel toxic to me smh

“You’re diff—”
“If you say different,” I interrupted, “I’m going to punch you. Don’t separate me out from other women. They’re my people.”

A fun urban fantasy by Janine Eve.

Maddison finds out she’s a supernatural and gets a scholarship to supernatural college. Her powers are sealed but flare with stress. There are five guys and she’s attracted to the baddest one.

It seems to be a theme from this author. This isn’t a reverse harem.

It’s set in the same world as the dragon prison series.

Recommended if you are in the mood for a new adult fantasy.

Bentornate Fenici!

Consigliato.

Alla prossima, un saluto dalla vostra Mal.
