Elise vive sola con il padre a lui suona il violino ai matrimoni, ai funerali e davanti ai grandi magazzini, mentre la mamma lavora in Brasile per costruire un ponte sospeso nel mezzo della giungla. Cominciano così le bizzarre avventure di Elise e del suo nuovo fedele amico, dalle strade di Copenaghen a un vecchio mulino abitato dai fantasmi, dalle canzoni del pizzaiolo Giorgio ai braccialetti magici del mercante Potifar. Elise è audace, ostinata, sempre piena di risorse; Duddi è saggio e fifone, arguto e tenero, dotato di uno humour esilarante. Insieme a loro e a una galleria di personaggi strampalati ma profondamente umani ci immergiamo in una storia poetica e spassosissima, che racconta il coraggio, l’amicizia e la forza portentosa che sa darci la fantasia.

About the author

Bjarne Reuter, born 1950 in Brønshøj, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark and the setting of many of his books.
His first book was published in 1975, the same year he graduated from teacher’s college.
In 1980, Bjarne Reuter left teaching to devote full time to writing.
He is the author of some 60 books for children and young adults (see complete bibliography).
He has written several novels for adults as well. In addition, he is the author of plays, musicals,
radio and television series for children. Eight of his books have been made into films for children, a number have been serialized on television and many of them have been dramatized on the stage in Denmark, Finland and Germany as well as in countries as far from home as Japan and Argentina.

I wanted to review this book for several reasons – it’s a book in translation and I think it is important for children to experience books written in different countries, especially ones that have a different language.

It is published by a small independent publisher and I love small independent publishers.* (Especially this one, as they happen to publish my books).

It was a finalist in the Book Trust In Other Words award for outstanding children’s literature in translation.

This is a sweet story about a lonely girl who wants a dog. Her father is totally against the idea, but she wins him round in the most beguiling way. But they can only afford a second-hand dog so off they go to the man who will sell you anything, whether you want it or not. And he just happens to have a second-hand dog for sale – not much of a dog, looking more like a rabbit and smelling of cheese, but Elise loves him. Especially when she discovers that he can talk – in a Scottish accent.
I won’t say I’m keen on talking dogs, but I do love this one, with his take on life and dry sense of humour. Laughs abound as they go off on their adventures together, mostly in their imagination.

The book is beautifully written and illustrated. An all round treasure.

If you like your humour on the dark and quirky side then Elise and the Second Hand Dog is for you.
A hidden gem, this middle grade adventure about a lonely child and her talking dog was an honour title in BookTrust's In Other Words initiative, a project set up to promote great writing from around the world.
Translated from Bjarne Reuter's original Danish by Sian Mackie, and illustrated by Kirsten Raagaard, Elise and the Second Hand Dog is a beautiful celebration of imagination and friendship and includes the best fictional Halloween party I have ever read.
Bjarne Reuter's work is hugely well-known and celebrated in Denmark. Published by small independent publisher Wacky Bee, we are lucky to have this taster of his talent. Hurrah for independent publishers who celebrate talent and bring us the best.

I’m not too sure about this story - it’s not at all what I was expecting and I guess that’s coloured my response.

This is really a series of mini stories about Elise and her dog that take place over a few months; the first episode is about how Elise acquired the dog. I was expecting a single narrative. Perhaps if I’d been prepared for that structure I would have been more able to relax into the book but there’s something unfinished about each episode that I’m struggling with.

The theme that ties the stories together is ‘missing someone’ but I’m not sure that’s explicit enough to really reach a LKS2 reader.

Jeg er aldrig i tvivl om forfatteren, når jeg læser Bjarne Reuter. Han har en utrolig hyggelig og morsom måde at beskrive karakterer og scener på. Historien er sød og meget nede på jorden. Skriften er forholdsvis stor og der er god plads mellem linjer og ord. Kapitlerne har en god længde og er derfor oplagt til højtlæsning, men det ville også kunne bruges som selvlæs fra ca. 9-10 års alderen. Der er rigtig mange hentydninger i denne bog.

“Elise e il cane di seconda mano” di Bjarne Reuter pag. 192

Elise, la protagonista, vive a Copenaghen con il padre, che suona il violino ai matrimoni ed è un tipo assai simpatico, e vuole molto bene a Elise, come del resto tutti i componenti della famiglia. Dal bisnonno che vive in una casa di riposo e desidererebbe Miss Messico come badante, alla nonna che vive in un mulino dove a un certo punto della storia tutti i familiari si troveranno a festeggiare Halloween; alla giovane zia Fie che gira su una due cavalli decappottabile verde e si diverte sui pattini a rotelle con Elise.
E infine c’è la mamma, che sta in Brasile per costruire un ponte, la cui lontananza, per Elise, è più una malinconica presenza che un’assenza.
Elise si dimostra da subito una bambina che sa quello che vuole e lei vuole un cane, più precisamente una femmina con la pancia grossa e le orecchie penzoloni. Sa che i soldi in casa sono pochi, per questo è decisa anche a fare delle rinunce e poi, confessa, si accontenterebbe anche di un cane… di seconda mano.
Così, dopo qualche insistenza, il padre cederà al suo desiderio, ma ad arrivare in casa sarà un cane decisamente bizzarro, non solo perché parla, ma anche perché ha un bel caratterino e si chiama Duddi. Se il cane parli davvero o sia tutta un’invenzione di Elise è argomento di continua discussione tra Elise stessa e la zia; mentre il dubbio resterà sempre anche nel lettore.
Elise e Duddi imparano pian piano a conoscersi e diventano buoni amici, i due si raccontano di madri lontane, una in Brasile l’altra partita per Aberdeen, di lettere strappate poi riattaccate con lo scotch…
I personaggi sono tutti meravigliosi. Il ritmo è coinvolgente e vi accompagnerà con delicatezza e sorrisi fino alla conclusione della storia
Reale e fantastico si mescolano armoniosamente, facendo dimenticare i confini dell’uno e dell’altro. I dialoghi tra Elise e il cane sono davvero divertenti, il carattere ostinato e forte di Elise, che sa comunque mostrare le sue debolezze e i suoi stati d’animo, si scontra con lo humor e l’intelligenza del piccolo McAduddi, un cane un po’ pigro e fifone, ma capace di ascoltare con attenzione la sua giovane amica.

Credo di avere un problema con i libri per bambini/ragazzi scritti da autori nordici. Avevo tanto sentito parlare in positivo di questo libro da un ragazzo che seguo molto volentieri su Instagram. Caso vuole che avessi trovato il libro al mercatino dell’usato e lo avessi acquistato per pochi euro, quindi eccomi qua.

Il libro parte molto bene: Elise abita con il papà e decide di comprare un cagnolino, ne trova uno in un negozio di seconda mano e se ne innamora all’istante. Inizia così un rapporto d’amicizia tra i due, che condividono varie esperienze. C’erano tutti gli elementi per costruire una di quelle storie che solitamente apprezzo, ma probabilmente lo stile e il modo in cui l’autore ha deciso di costruire la storia non mi hanno convinto.

Non so spiegarmi bene il perché ma credo che negli autori nordici (ne ho letti giusto due finora) quello che mi manca è il pathos, sentire l’emozione uscire dalle pagine e dalla storia che leggo. Non sono riuscita infatti a provare emozioni leggendo la storia di Elise, non sono riuscita a provare empatia con i personaggi, ad entrare a pieno nella storia come invece di solito accade. Ciò che non mi convince poi è che mi sembra che queste storie giungano troppo presto alla fine senza però riuscire a darmi un messaggio, o forse sono io che non riesco a captarlo. Penso dipenda proprio dallo stile dell’autore.

Oltretutto, essendo una grande amante dei cani e degli animali in generale, mi è sembrato ancora più strano non riuscire ad appassionarmi alla storia.

Bah...

Sembrava Ok all'inizio. Anche se Elise tratta malissimo il cane e non gli permette nemmeno di andare a fare i suoi bisogni prima di partire. Davvero, non si capisce come i due possano legare visto il modo in cui si trattano a vicenda.

Poi salto in avanti nel tempo. E da qua peggiora tutto. Non è più un racconto ma episodi singoli ben distanziati nel tempo. Alcuni neanche raccontati, come la festa di Natale. È Elise che ne parla successivamente.

Se c'è una morale o un significato, non li ho trovati.

Nemmeno i disegni salvano il libro.

Fortuna che l'ho preso usato.

Lovely illustrations but what a disjointed, lazy story.
It all seemed ok at the start (perfect for a kindle preview I guess), but about 1/4 in, the author starts describing isolated, disconnected events, hinting at a broader theme that is never clear to an adult, let alone to the book’s target audience.
Most characters don’t have a particular reason to be there, and the same applies to most scenes and virtually all details (music references, festivities, locations...) - thrown in at random without adding anything, virtually just causing confusion in the child listening to the story.
I should have followed my instinct and thrown the book out of the window when it seemed to suggest that Dublin is in Scotland. (What the heck was that about??!?)
Why wasting all this paper, and people’s time?
