18-year old Mossy Cha has only ever wanted one thing: more control over her own life. With high school graduation approaching, she is excited to attend her dream college and experience freedom for the first time. But life takes an unexpected turn when this modern girl learns she is the chosen bride of a powerful Hmong shaman. The last thing she needs is destiny telling her what to do! Touso Khang comes from a line of shamans that once exiled a great evil from the world. As the demon Du Yong returns to seek revenge, Touso's only chance to destroy him for good is with the help of his chosen bride. Can he convince Mossy to accept her place by his side before evil forces prevail?
I went into this book with no expectations and ended up completely blown away by the storytelling! This is only the second fantasy I’ve read that centers Hmong culture, and I’m in awe of how beautifully Paj wove in our traditions, beliefs, and history.
I was so hooked that I ordered books 2 and 3 halfway through! Since starting my reading journey, I’ve been craving more Hmong-inspired fantasy—and Paj absolutely delivered. I can’t wait to finish the rest of this series! Full details of my review on IG - @itsreader.k
This book kept me awake. Not even from reading it late into the night, I was awake just thinking about what would happen next. I cannot wait for book 2. It’s one of the most unique books I’ve ever read but very in tune with the Hmong culture! I want my husband to read it so bad (he not a big reader)!
I learned so much about the Hmong with this book and I’m excited to read the second one.
My only draw back was my girl took foooooorrrreeeevvvvverrrrr to pick the right dude lol I get the build up but it started to irk me a little but once that action kicked in it had me!
Such a good book written by an even better person!
This was a fun read! Paj does a fantastic job immersing the reader in the clashes between family, Hmong culture, and personal desires while rounding out the story with romance and evil villains. Starting book 2 today.
The only thing that kept me interested is the shaman aspect and world. Unfortunately you dont see toooo much of it happening in book one. I hope to see more of that in book 2.
Otherwise, I don't care too much about the characters yet, or the mediocre insta-love, asian drama influenced, ( real but fake-ish? Iykyk) love triangle, romance thats happening- though I know that's what most of her fans are enjoying. The romance is...fine- just thought it could have been developed better or in a different way than it was.
The writing itself is decent, though there's room for improvement. Definitely reads like a self published novel and could use some polishing and editors.
I loved this book <3 As a fellow Hmong-American girl who tends to challenge the elders' way of thinking, I was on Mossy's side for most of the book but came around to what needed to be done by the end of the book. I want my own Touso 😂 Some of the concepts might be a little strange or hard to understand to readers who are not Hmong but everything is explained and nothing a little internet search can't help answer. Reminder to readers that the book isn't completely accurate when it comes to Hmong shaman traditions, Paj says it herself that this book is loosely based on the Hmong culture and traditions not everything is accurate😂
