Pasitha manidam - audacious but felt bit long

First and foremost: AUDACIOUS- imagine this novel published in 1977 - he openly talks about child abuse, homosexuality, infidelity, failure of morality, challenges with not knowing oneself, low self esteem, selfishness & unchecked lust. I agree with all the other reviews- there are places in the novel that feel so boring but something about the characters somehow push you make it to the end.

1) ரத்த சுவை (சிறுகதை) - மனித சமூகத்தின் போலி நம்பிக்கைகளுக்கும் காலாவதியான மரபுகளுக்கும், அன்றாட மனித வாழ்வின் யதார்த்தத்திற்கும் உள்ள பரந்த இடைவெளி குறித்து ஆழமாக சிந்திக்க வைக்கும் ஒரு சிறுகதை.

பசித்த மானிடம் - கரிச்சான்குஞ்சு

இதற்குமுன் எழுத்தாளரின் ‘ரத்த சுவை’ என்ற ஒரே சிறுகதையை தான் படித்திருக்கிறேன். மிகச் சிறந்த கதைகளில் ஒன்றான அந்த கதை தந்த உற்சாகத்தின் தொடர்ச்சியாக இந்த நாவலை வாசிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன். கரிச்சான்குஞ்சு எழுதிய ஒரே நாவல் என்றும் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் முதன் முதலாக ஓரினச் சேர்க்கை இடம் பெற்ற நாவல் என்றும் பரவலாக அறியப்பட்ட இந்த நாவலை வாசித்து முடிக்கும் போது, கும்பகோணத்து வாழ்க்கையை படித்த அனுபவத்தை தந்தது. தோப்பூரைச் சேர்ந்த இரண்டு மனிதர்கள் கணேசன் மற்றும் கிட்டா, அவர்களின் மொத்த வாழ்க்கையையும் பின்னலாக கொண்ட கதை அமைப்பு. பணம், அதிகாரம், உடல் இவற்றின் பால் மனிதர்கள் கொள்ளும் பசி தீராதது, பசியை போக்க வழி இல்லாத போது ஏற்படும் துன்பம், அதை போக்கும் போது திருப்தியாக மாறுகிறது, அவ்வாறு அடையும் திருப்தியும் நிரந்தரம் இல்லாதது, தொடர்ந்து ஏதோ ஒன்றின் மீது பசி ஏற்பட்ட வண்ணம் வாழ்க்கை நகர்கிறது என்ற சிந்தனை விவாதம் தான் கதை முழுக்க விரவியுள்ளது.

அக்கிரகாரத்து வாசம் அதிகமாக உள்ளது, கணேசன் பூணூல் இல்லாமல் பள்ளியில் சேர முடியாது போக, அந்த சடங்கில் விருப்பம் இல்லாத வாத்தியாரும் அதை கடைபிடிக்க நேர்கிறது. அதேபோல் பிச்சைகாரியாக வரும் கோதையும் தன்னுடைய சமூக பின்புலத்தை விளக்குகிறாள். பூணூல் அணிய விரும்பாத கணேசன் சுந்தரியின் கட்டளையின் பேரில் அணிந்து கொள்ளும்படி நேர்கிறது. இவையெல்லாம் நாவலில் இடம் பெறுவதற்கான காரணம் தான் என்ன என்பதை அக்கால சூழல் கொண்டு உணர முடியவில்லை. பிச்சை எடுப்பவர் கூட ஒரு எளிய சமூக பின்புலம் அற்றவராக ஏன் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றியது. சீனு அய்யங்கார் என்ற கணக்குபிள்ளையின் வட்டி கதைகள் ‘ரத்த சுவை’ கதையை நினைவூட்டியது. இவை அனைத்தையும் மீறி தொடர்ந்து இந்த நாவலை படிக்க இருந்த காரணம்கள் எழுத்தாளர் கையாண்ட கதை சொல்லும் உத்தி மற்றும் எழுத்தாளர் வெளிச்சமிட்டு காட்டிய முகமூடியற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்கள். மேலும் தொழுநோயை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வாக அக்காலத்தில் அமைந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

This novel is about hunger, the various hunger that torments human and drive their lives. Ganesan and Kitta the two central characters of this novel are driven by extreme sexual and egoistic desires. Ganesan's life is tragic as an orphan he has been brutally exploited. Gradually he is used to this life of sexual perversion, eventually he is infected with Leprosy. We follow his life as he tries to grapple with sexual desire and his sincere wish to overcome it. In a sense this disease forces him to relook his life. His unlikely friendship with a police person transforms him, mistaken for a saint he eventually ends up being a saint itself. His entire journey and the endearing relationship he builds with a blind women were moving to read. Kitta's life on the contrary seems outwardly to be growing but it is one of complete decline. The novel ends with Kitta and Ganesan finding each other after a tumultuous life.

The novel is a complete exploration of human hunger physical and spiritual too.

In my career of four decades, I came across just about a couple of cases of Hansen’s Disease – and that too in the initial stages; and never had the opportunity of treating this chronic disease.
This book has all the elements of a rollicking good story – hedonism, gluttony, ascetism, incest, cretinous offspring as a result of inbreeding (marrying one’s sister's daughters!), paedophilia, unbridled lust, polygamy, births, sickness, deaths, spirituality. If there is a message or moral in the story, it bypassed me.
For non-Tamilian readers like me, I wish the glossary was more comprehensive.

This is probably the toughest book to rate for me so far. The flow of the story and pacing is excellent at some parts and lags badly in another. Some parts are highly intelligent while some are filled with banal sentiments . But the grip of the author over his language is amazing and at no point I could feel that this was written 36 years ago, which definitely makes it one of the most important work of fiction in Tamil.

This book takes you to the grand old days of how Trichy / Tanjore / Kumbakonam looks like and it helps you to connect with the lifestyle/Culture of these cities. This book also helps you to understand how Human being transition to different stages in life accidentally and become a victim. This book teaches you on the struggle between human emotions and relationships. My take away from this book is, life is a journey, just sit back and stay calm throughout the journey.

"The disease had transformed his body and made his face unrecognizable. Ganesan intensely observed his older body die slowly and watched a dreadful one replacing it. He vowed not to ask himself the usual questions: Why me? What is the meaning of this awful new form? How long will this 'new me' live?... He steeled himself into thinking that if life had to be experienced in all its forms, so be it."

The novel suffers from a classic case of unmet expectations as the blurb makes promises that the narrative simply can't keep. "The themes of masculinity, desire and sexuality, caged within caste and repression", as the inner jacket says, are barely addressed here let alone properly explored. This is not to say that Kunju portrays human nature with no deep insight. He looks at societal corruption and human hypocrisy, and how it connects to moral bankruptcy and patriarchy, quite well but doesn't ascend beyond showing.

Aravindan claims that it "unflinchingly records a community teetering because of a stagnant outlook but acts modern by assuming external elements of change." He also faults its irregular progression, later on, deeming it "overwrought in parts where it is not needed and pared down in parts that require elucidation." I concur. The narrative feels aimless. The viewpoint abruptly shifts every few chapters. The queer elements are under-baked. Caste is mostly a non-issue (although the book would be a fascinating examination of caste if read against the grain). Tilak's debut translation could use tightening.

’பசித்த மானிடம்’ பற்றிய இலக்கிய விமர்சனம் எழுதும் தகுதி இல்லை, அதனால் பின்வருபவை என் மனப்பதிவுகள் மட்டுமே இவை. சிறு தயக்கத்துடனே வாசிக்கத் துவங்கினேன். ஏனோ இது பின்நவீனத்துவ பாணியில் இருக்கும் என்றொரு எண்ணம் மனதில் இருந்ததால் வந்த தயக்கமாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் வாசிக்க வாசிக்க மிக எளிமையான நடையாகவே பட்டது. கிட்டத்தட்ட 500 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட நாவல் என்ற எண்ணமே தோன்றவில்லை. கதையின் கதாபாத்திரங்களும், அவர்களது சமூக நெறிகளுக்குப் புறம்பான நடத்தைகளும் கதை வெளிவந்த காலத்தில் பெரிய அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கக் கூடும் என்பதை ஊகிக்கலாம். மேலோட்டமாகப் பார்த்தால் அன்றைய சமுதாயத்தில் இருந்த லட்சிய ��ிம்பங்களை உடைத்த கதை. ஆனால் அதை அடுத்த கட்டத்துக்கு எடுத்துச் செல்வது இடையிடையே வரும் கதைமாந்தர்களின் மனவோட்டத்தைப் பற்றிய வர்ணனை. அவ்வப்போது ஆசிரியருக்கு சிவப்பு தோலின் மேல் மிகுந்த ஈடுபாடு போல என்று தோன்ற வைக்கும் வண்ணம் கதாபாத்திரங்களின் தோல்நிறம் சார்ந்து வரும் வர்ணனைகள் சற்று எரிச்சல்படுத்தினாலும், தான் சார்ந்த சமுதாயத்தின் கசடுகளை, போலி பிம்பங்களை வெளிச்சமிட்டுக் காட்டியிருக்கும் ஆசிரியரின் தைரியத்தையும் மெச்சாமல் இருக்க முடியாது.
குறையாகச் சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் ஒரு ஒழுங்கு இல்லாமல் அங்குமிங்கும் தாவும் கதைக்களனைச் சொல்லலாம். அதனால் சிலஅத்தியாயங்கள் துவங்கும் போது அது தற்காலமா அல்லது flashback-ஆ என்ற குழப்பம் சில சமயம் ஏற்படுகிறது. ஆனால் அது பெரிய குறையாகத் தோன்றாத அளவுக்கு மொழிநடை சிறப்பாக அமைந்துள்ளது.

கதை மாந்தர்களில் என் மனதில் நிற்பவர் ‘பசுபதி’ என்ற போலீஸ்காரர். மற்ற படி, கதையைப் பற்றிச் சொல்லி இதை நீட்டவில்லை, இணையத்தில் தேடினால் கிடைக்கும். ஆனால் அதைவிட கதையையே படித்துப் பாருங்களேன்.

காமம் , அதிகாரம் இரண்டும் மனிதனின் பெரும்பசி, தீரா போதை கணேசன் , கிட்டா இருவருக்கும் அது நிறையவே இருக்கிறது. அவை கிடைத்தால்தான் நிம்மதி என்று பள்ளி பருவ வயதில் இருந்தே ஓடுகின்றனர்.


கணேசனுக்கு ராவுத்தர் , ஜவுளி கடைக்காரரில் தொடங்கி (இது இன்றும் பேச இயலாத அல்லது பேச தயங்கும் ஓரினச்சேர்க்கை பற்றி அந்த காலத்திலேயே பேசிய தமிழின் முதல் நாவலாம்) தன் டீச்சர் மனைவி, பென் டாக்டர், கோதை (இரண்டாவது மனைவி) என பலரிடமும் காம இன்பம் கிடைக்கிறது.


கிட்டாவிற்கு தன் மனைவி, மறைந்த தன் அண்ணனின் மனைவி , தன் மனைவியின் சகோதரி , தன் தொழில் கூட்டாளியின் மனைவி என பலரிடமும் கிடைக்கிறது கூடவே அவன் ஆசைப்பட்ட அதிகாரமும் , தொழிலும் , பணமும்,வெற்றியும் கிடைக்கிறது.


எது கிடைத்தால் நிம்மதி , மகிழ்ச்சி என்று அவர்கள் நினைத்தார்களோ அது அவர்களுக்கு கிடைத்தாலும் ஓர் நடுத்தர வயதை அடைந்ததும் மிஞ்சியது மன வருத்தம்,பழி, நோய், பகை , நிம்மதியின்மை இவையே.


இறதியில் நிம்மதி ஆத்ம ஞானத்தை தேடுவதிலும் , பற்றற்ற வாழ்க்கை வாழ்வதிலும்தான் என்று கணேசன் உணர்கிறான் , நிம்மதி என்பது அன்பான உறவுகளும் , அமைதியான வாழ்வும்தான் என கிட்டா உணர்கிறான்.


இந்த நாவலை போகத்தின் வழியாக ஞானத்தை பற்றி பேசும் முயற்சியாக கொள்ளலாம், காமத்தை தவிர புரிந்துகொள்ள, சிந்திக்க நிறையவே இருப்பதாக தோன்றுகிறது இந்த புத்தகத்தில்.

அடங்காத பசியும், தீராத தாகமும் மனிதர்களை எங்கே இழுத்து செல்கின்றன? மண், பெண், பொன் என அனைத்தும் அடைந்த பின்னரும், தொடர்ந்து நிறைவைத் தேடும் எஞ்சிய வாழ்க்கைப் பயணம் 'பசித்த மானிடம்'. பொருள் தேடித் தேடி பொருளற்றுப் போகும் வாழ்வின் பொருள் தேடும் நாவல். நன்று!

உணர்வுகள் மனிதனுக்கு இயல்பானவையே. அதிலும் பசி, தூக்கம், ஏக்கம், காமம் போன்ற பலவும் மனிதர்கள் அனைவரக்கும் இயல்பான ஒன்றாகவே இருக்கிறது. அதில் காமத்தினை மட்டும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு பெண்களை அதற்கு அடிமைகளாக நடத்தும் போக்கு இந்நாவல் முழுமையும் வெளிப்படகிறது. ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட சமகத்தைச் சார்ந்த பெண்களையே மையமிட்டு எடுக்கப்பட்டாலும் பெண் என்ற பொது புத்தியிலிருந்து நோக்கும்போது இது எவ்வளவு அபத்தமானது என்பது நோக்கத்தக்கது.
முறையற்ற உறவுமுறைகளும் அதன்மூலம் பெறப்படும் நோயும், அதுமுற்றி அலையும்போது கூட சேவைக்காக வரும் பெண்களைக் கூட காமத்தின் பார்வையில் நோக்கும் மனிதனை இந்நாவல் படைக்கிறத. முறையற்ற பல உறவுகள், கணவனை மீறிய / அவனுக்குத் தெரியாமல் உறவுகொள்ளும் பெண்களும், மற்றொருவரின் கணவன் எனத் தெரிந்தும் கூட அவர்கள் கொள்ளும் உறவும் பெரிதும் அபத்தமாகவே வெளிப்படுகிறது. அதிலும் வீட்டில் நுழையும் ஆண் யாரெனத் தெரியாமலேயே அவனுடன் கொள்ளும் உறவும், அவனையே உயிராக நினைத்து வாழ்வதும் இங்கு பதிவுசெய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஓரினச் சேர்க்கையும், அதற்காக அலைந்து திரியும் பெரிய மனிதர்களையும் பதிவுசெய்துள்ளது. அதன்தாக்கம் வயதில் குறைந்த சிறுவனை, அவனின் படிப்பைப் பாதியில் விட்டுவிடச் செய்யும் அளவிற்குச் செல்வது வேதனைக்குரியது.
உறவுமுறைகூட பார்க்காமல் தன்னுடைய காமத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாத அளவிற்கே மனிதசமூகம் மாறிவிட்டதை, தன் அண்ணியுடன் உறவு, தன் மனைவியின் அக்காவுடன் உறவு என அபத்தத்தின் உச்சமாக அமைகிறது. பெண் என்பவள் வெறும் காமத்திற்கு மட்டுமே என்பதுபோல் உரவகித்துக் காட்டுகிறது நாவல். தன் உடல்முழுதும் தொழுநோயால் அவதிப்படும் நேரத்தில்கூட கண்தெரியாத பிச்சைக்காரியின் (பிராமண சமூகத்தில் பிறந்தவள் என பதிவுசெய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது) கொள்ளும் உறவு என விரிகிறது. அனைத்து இடங்களிலுமே பெண்கள் தங்கள் உணர்ச்சிகளைக் கட்டுக்குள் வைக்கத் தெரியாதவர்கள் என்றே காட்டப்படுகிறது. இதனால் நாயகர்கள் எங்குமே எந்தப் பெண்ணையும் கட்டாயப்படுத்தி உறவுகொள்வதாக அமைக்கப்படவில்லை (அம்மு என்ற பெண்ணைத் தவிர, அவளுக்கு வயது 15).
உணர்வுகளை அடக்கத் தெரியாமல் சுற்றித்தெரியும் தொழுநோயாளி இறுதியில் அனைத்து ஆசைகளையும் கடந்து ஞானியாக மாறுகிறான் என்பது மானிடத்தின் அபத்தம்.

கரிச்சான் குஞ்சுவின் "பசித்த மானிடம்" இருபதுகளின் துவக்கத்தில் படித்தபோது பிடித்திருந்தது என்பது ஆச்சரியமானதல்ல. இந்த நாவல் அடிப்படை மனித உணர்வுகளை வெளிப்படையாகவும் நேரடியாகவும் முன்வைத்தது. மனிதர்கள் எதற்காக போராடுகிறார்கள், என்னவெல்லாம் அவர்களை இயக்குகிறது, வெற்றி பெற்றபின் அவர்களுக்கு என்ன நடக்கிறது - இத்தகைய அடிப்படையான கேள்விகளுக்கான பதில்கள் இந்த நாவலில் வெளிப்படையாக வழங்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.

கரிச்சான் குஞ்சுவின் எழுத்து நடை நேரடியானது, அலங்காரம் குறைந்தது. அவர் மனித இயல்புகளை மறைப்பில்லாமல் வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். இருபது வயதில் இருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு இத்தகைய வெளிப்படைத்தன்மை கவர்ச்சியாக இருக்கும். வாழ்க்கையைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள விரும்பும் ஒரு இளம் மனதுக்கு, சிக்கலான உளவியல் பகுப்பாய்வுகளை விட இத்தகைய நேரடியான அணுகுமு���ை மிகவும் ஏற்புடையதாக இருக்கும்.

மேலும், நாவலின் கதாபாத்திரங்கள் தங்கள் விருப்பங்களை அடைய போராடுகிறார்கள், வெற்றி பெறுகிறார்கள், பின்னர் அவர்களில் ஒருவர் வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய ஒரு முக்கியமான உண்மையை உணர்ந்துகொள்கிறார். இத்தகைய வாழ்க்கை முறை - போராட்டம், வெற்றி, பின்னர் சுய உணர்வு - இருபது வயதில் இருக்கும் ஒருவருக்கு வாழ்க்கையின் முழு பாதையையும் காட்டுவது போல் தோன்றும்.

இன்றைய கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்க்கும்போது, அந்நாவல் ஏன் கவர்ந்தது என்பது தெளிவாகிறது. அது வாழ்க்கையின் அடிப்படை மனித உந்துதல்களை, அவற்றின் விளைவுகளை, மற்றும் அந்த அனுபவங்களிலிருந்து கிடைக்கும் பாடங்களை வெளிப்படையாகவும் எளிமையாகவும் சொன்னது. இருபது வயதின் "அடிப்படைத் தேவை பார்வை"க்கு இது மிகவும் பொருத்தமானதாக இருந்திருக்கிறது.

பசி வந்தால் பத்தும் பறந்து போகும் என்று ஒரு பழமொழி உண்டு. இங்கு பசி என்றால் வயிற்றுப்பசி.தன் பசியை தீர்க்க முடியாத மனிதன் தன்னிடமுள்ள மானம், குலம், கல்வி, வண்மை, அறிவுடைமை, தானம், தவம், முயற்சி, தாளாண்மை, காமம் ஆகியவற்றை இழந்துவிடுவான் என்பது இந்த பழமொழியின் பொருள். உற்று நோக்க பார்த்தால் மேலே கூறப்பட்டுள்ளன பத்தில் ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒரு விதமான பசி.

இரு வேறு இடங்களில் வயிற்றுப் பசியுடன் ஆரம்பிக்கும் இருவருடைய வாழ்க்கை ஒரு இடத்தில் சந்தித்து. காலப்போக்கில் அவர்களின் பசி வேறு ஒன்றாக மாறி, காலத்தின் கட்டாயத்தினால் மீண்டும் வேறு ஒரு திசையில் பயணித்து சில வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு மீண்டும் சந்தித்தால் அவர்களின் பசியின் நிலையும் வாழ்க்கையின் புரிதல் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பதுதான் பசித்த மானிடம்.

எந்த ஒரு ஒளிவு மறைவு இல்லாமல் அப்பட்டமாக கரிச்சான் குஞ்சு இந்த நாவலை எழுதியுள்ளார். இதை அவர் எழுதிய காலக்கட்டத்தின் சமூக கட்டமைப்பை என்னும் பொழுது இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு நாவலை அவர் எழுத அவருக்கு எல்லையற்ற தைரியம் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும்.

I started this book with an astray mind little did i know i won't be able to contemplate the depth of words and emotions it contains. No matter how simply author describes the desires one's body and mind contains its just not enough. Keeping in mind two protagonists, one (Ganeshan) suffering from leprosy who was once and apple of everyone's eye and now the world looks at him as a mere untouchable while the other (Kitta) secretly desires about everything that Ganeshan has. Again time takes a toll and things just reverse. In the end what one has to achieve in life?? "One must eat and sleep a bit for now, and then he must await the big sleep"

One seeking into the imaginations of Indian authors with something that makes you ponder on what you've read for awhile must read.

புத்தகத்தின் பின் அட்டையில் சொல்லியிருப்பதை போல் மனிதனுக்கு காமம், பொருள், அதிகாரம் மேலுள்ள பசி தான் கதை. இதில் காமம் என்பது வெறும் heterosexual மட்டுமல்லாமல் தற்பாலீர்ப்பு, முறைகேடான உறவுகள் என்று பலவற்றை பேசுகிறது. நிறைய இடங்களில் வெறும் வம்பளக்கும் கதை போல் தோற்றமுண்டு. மற்றபடி எந்த இலக்கியப்பூச்சுகளும் இல்லை. பிராமண வழக்கு மொழியின் மேல் ஒவ்வாமை உண்டென்றாலும் இரண்டே அமர்வில் முழு புத்தகமும் வசிக்குமளவுக்கு சுவாரசியமாகவும் இருந்தது. ஏனோ கணேசன் பசுபதி உரையாடல்களின் போது "பரவச நிலையா.. நான் மும்தாஜ் மாதிரி ஆடிட்டுருக்கேன்" காமெடி தான் ஞாபகம் வந்தது :)

I think I will take much time to ruminate what I have read from this novel. There are two main protagonists: Ganeshan and Kitta. Their lives are determined by their hunger: hunger for sex, wealth, respect and women. They achieved whatever they wanted, at times, more than that. Having everything we ever wanted, one of them realized a crucial thing about life. I liked this book and I would like to read this book again at the same age of Ganeshan's at the end of this story.

பசித்த மானுடம் கிட்டத்தட்ட அரை நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன் எழுதப்பட்ட நாவல். இது போன்ற கதைக்களனை இதுவரை நான் கண்டதில்லை. கரிச்சான் குஞ்சுவின் எழுத்துக்கள் எளிமையாகவும் ஆழமாகவும் இருக்கிறது. கதையின் மாந்தர்கள் அனைவரும் மனிதத்தின் ஆதார பசியின் பிடியில் தம்மை இழந்துவிடுகிறார்கள். காமம், அதிகாரம், வேட்கை இவற்றின் மேல் மனிதன் கொண்டுள்ள வெறியையே இந்நாவல் பேசுகிறது. நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தை படிக்க விரும்பும் அனைவரும் அவசியம் படிக்கவேண்டிய புத்தகம்.

What surprised me most? How openly it discusses queerness, abusive marriages, caste privilege, and sexual exploitation - all laid bare in a Tamil agraharam where rituals mask raw human hunger.

Written in 1978 but cuts like it was written yesterday.
Quietly devastating. Highly recommended read.

A rare gem. In the middle I thought I wouldn't like it but then it enveloped larger aspects of human suffering. It touched upon a node. Do read it atleast once.

அருமையான சித்தரிப்புகள். கதை ஒற்றைப்படையாக இல்லாமல் விரிந்து விரிந்து செல்கிறது. ஓரினச்சேர்க்கைப்பற்றி வருவது மிக அதிர்ச்சியை அளித்தது. இத்தனைக்கும் கதையின் நாயகன் இதில் என்னமாதிரியான பாத்திரம் என்பது சற்று புரியவில்லை. அவன் ஆணின் கூறுகளை கொண்டிருந்தாலும் அவன் ஒரு பெண் பாத்திரம் போல் கதைமுழுக்க வருகிறான்.

மனிதனின் பசி என்று காமம், பணம், அதிகாரம் மட்டுமா என்று கேள்வியை முன்வைக்கிறது. நாயகன் ஞானமும் அதனின் தேடலும் ஒருவிதமான பசியே அந்த பசியே முன் சொன்ன அனைத்தின் அனுபத்தின் மூலம்தான் உருவாகும் என்றும் சொல்வதுபோலே பட்டது. கண்டிப்பாக மீண்டும் மீண்டும் படிக்கவேண்டிய நாவல்.

இரு நாயகர்கள் தோப்பூர் என்ற புள்ளியில் பிரிந்து அவரவர் வாழ்வை வாழ்ந்து மீண்டும் சந்திக்கும்போது தத்தம் அனுபவத்தை பகிரும்போது வாசகனுக்கு ஆசிரியர் தான் சொல்லவந்ததை சொல்லி முடித்து வைக்கிறார்.

எப்போது இந்த பசி ஆண் என்ற ஒற்றைப்படையாக இல்லாமல் பெண் கதாபாத்திரங்களும் அதே நிலையில் இருக்கின்றன. அதை பக்தி என்ற பேரில் மடைமாற்றி அதில் திளைத்தபோதிலும் அது அந்த ஆணின் மனதில் உருவாக்கும் அலை கடைசிவரை இருக்கிறது.

This is a tough book to rate. There are certain portions which are elaborated more than required and once you think the story is going very slow then the author captivates you one again. Very controversial and unrealistic matters are dealt in this book.

கணேசன் பள்ளியை விட்டு விலகி ரவுத்துடன் என்ன செய்கிறான் என்று வரும் பொது மட்டும், ஓ .. கரிச்சான் குஞ்சுனிலும் ஒரு தி. ஜானகிராமன் இருக்கிறார் என்று உணர முடிந்தது. கரிச்சான் குஞ்சும், தி. ஜா.வும் நண்பர்கள்தானே. மற்றபடி நாவலில் pace என்று சொல்லப்படும் வேகம் ஏனோ எனக்கு வரவேயில்லை.
