Re-read December 2023
This is like a bazillion stars always. Even more incredible, awe-inspiring, and immersive than I remembered. I can't believe it's taken me this long to re-read it, but what a better time than with the release of the second book! What an absolutely astounding, gritty, and beautifully written masterpiece. The characters are some of my most favourite of all time, they're so raw, complex and beautifully, tragically human to their core, facing a war that's been passed down for generations, and just trying to find their space in the world that's never quite completely truthful with them. Deliciously twisty, and multi-layered, I can't get over how gorgeous and amazing this high fantasy world is, and I cannot wait to delve into book two.

Wow! This absolutely blew me away. I'm truly at the mercy of Israh.
Heroes of the Empire follows Velamir and Natassa. After being found abandoned at four years old, and saved from the empire's rule, Velamir is adopted by General Winston and sent to the Chisman Academy to become an elite soldier for Lord Prolus. Brought up with intentions to maintain the peace and tranquillity amongst the eight kingdoms, Velamir and three of his academic rivals and somewhat friends are sent on a mission to infiltrate and weaken Empire Malus's control. Natassa is the daughter of savage and ruthless Empire Malus. Brought up to be quite, obedient and amiable to the whims of her father, she shows a quiet strength of rebellion. Suffocated and punished within her own home, and chained to a man she despises, Princess Natassa is determined to escape these shackles even at the risk of her own life.
The book actually starts with a pronunciation guide which is absolutely amazing, and something all fantasy books should have! Now let's chat about some of the characters, because they were unforgettable, detailed, complex and just amazing.
Velamir has a gentle heart, who is against killing needlessly despite the teachings of the Chishma's, he has strength, tenacity and resilience, holding strongly to his morals and humanity in spite of being trained to be a ruthless and blood thirsty soldier of Prolus. His love and care for his best friend Jax was wonderful to read, he shows true loyalty and bravery standing up for him, and consistently being beside his side. Velamir's development was an absolute joy to see, battling his own insecurities but consistently standing up for any injustices he sees, protecting innocents even when it poses a threat to his life.
Jax, aww this man is a gentleman and completely owns my heart, Jax keeps hold of his sense of humour even in times of pain towards himself. He's full of compassion and kindness for people and animals, and is a certified hopeless romantic. Due to his nature of being a Shadow Manos, who are often avoided due to their abilities being seen as witchcraft, he has often been at the receiving end of pain and anguish from others within the academy. Being a Doer Shadow Manos means that when his shadow appears, his normal abilities are enhanced including his strength and mind, but the shadow often comes and goes when it wants, and Jax doesn't feel particularly blessed. He battles the suffocation, manipulation and control that the shadow brings each time it appears, knowing that one day the shadow will completely take over his body and mind. Jax is an incredibly interesting character, with a heart full of love and compassion for those around him.
Next we have Princess Natassa, daughter of Emperor Malus, who also has a very gentle and compassionate heart but is ready for battle and determined to get her voice back. After years of being submitted to abuse and punishments from her father in response to her not following his orders or whims, Natassa has had enough. Her relationship with her older brother Thorsten was tender and heart warming, it seemed to give her strength to keep going, and it's clear how much love and affection the two have for one another. They both care deeply about others and show great integrity and honour in protecting and providing for some of the more targeted and affected people. Their grit, perseverance and strength was really admirable to read, in spite of the consequences that would befall them if their father ever found out. Their relationship is definitely one of my all time favourites, the love they hold for one another is palpable. Being stuck inside with just her handmaidens for company and occasionally her brother, Natassa is very isolated and lonely, battling with her father's decision to marry her off to Prince Drayven of Ayleth, someone who repulses her and unnerves her down to her core, with his callousness and disregard for anyone lower than him. Feeling like she's drowning in a kingdom that's falling, with no independence and say over her own life, Natassa is determined to change her destiny, she is brave, with quiet strength and resilience.
Her father, Emperor Malus is a savage, cutthroat and ruthless dictator, who shows very little regard for human life, even for those who fight loyally for him. He has no care or love for his children except to drill them into becoming second versions of himself, however he sees fit.
There was so much going on in this book, and I adored every single page. It completely surpassed my expectations, I felt fully immersed and engaged throughout, and I love the fact that the characters are full of heart and depth, and considering there's many throughout, that's a hard feat to achieve but it was written beautifully and was so smooth. It has multiple POV's from various different characters perspectives but I didn't find this to be a hinderance at all.
The characters and the world building was incredible and fully realised. It was really devastating to read all the pain and suffering each have had to go through, throughout this war that seems never ending. It's definitely an emotional rollercoaster, so if you're picking this one up, be aware! There were so many twists that were just gut wrenching and shocking that I was in floods of tears. Moral of the story: don't get attached to any characters... EVER. Despite this, the pain and hardship, personal or otherwise, that the characters go through feel genuinely realistic and relatable, or at least easy to understand to a deeper extent. Their actions all have consequences that actually stay consistent, which is one thing I rarely find in books like this, it was refreshing but heart-breaking at the same time to witness them coping with these consequences. Even the deaths, where some characters die with unfinished business that will never be able to be resolved, is much more lifelike and relatable than most, but then you have to deal with the crushing and devastating impacts of reading that.
The way that each chapter helps you delve deeper into each character's backstory, and things start to slowly start to become clear, it really helps you become attached to them and understand their journeys to a better extent. I found this was really captivating, and compelling. These personal journey's often take various twists and turns whilst the characters slowly come to terms with what's happening, and they fight with their instincts, morals and upbringing to see the situation in a new light, and figure out where their loyalties truly lie within a kingdom that's tearing itself apart.
Ends on a cliff-hanger that hooked me completely, I am ecstatic for the next one, I'm in too deep already, I will be waiting patiently (or not so) for the next instalment :)
I got major Lotr and Game of Thrones vibes and was completely obsessed with it. Overall, I just adored this book. It really highlighted the quiet strength of an individual and how important and powerful that strength can be, particularly in crumbling and warring empires. Jam packed full of action, tension, betrayals, revenge, love, grief, epic battles, characters who are unforgettable and you cannot help but fall in love with and a splash of magic. Definitely one of my favourite reads this year, and you can be sure I'll be sprinting to the next one when it's released.
