34 Bubblegums and Candies

Rate this book
34 Bubblegums and Candies is a collection of short, real-life incidents that have inspired the author in the course of her life. Using the analogy of bubblegums and candies, the title alludes to the various facets of life that go by unnoticed. Humorous and engaging, the book takes you through 34 real-life incidents covering a variety of characters.

Some of the short stories are titled Please Hug Me I'm Just Like You, Sylvester Stallone Doesn't Open Up Easily, Radiators And Drains, My Special Friend, Age Miracles, Feeling Needed, Mail Exchange and The Stranger. In Please Hug Me I'm Just Like You, you travel into a home where children who are HIV positive are cared for. 34 Bubblegums And Candies gives you a fun outlook at some of life's more complicated issues without trivializing them.

The funny and touching stories end with notes that encourage the reader to look at the lessons you can learn from some of the simplest things in life. Like the author's other works, the book uses simple vocabulary, presented in an engaging pace.

“A condition that my mom put forward when she got me a membership in local library years back was ’no book lending during weekdays‘. That was because those days I used to spend long hours reading and not even hunger could distract me once I started with a book. The people who made me do it were Enid Blyton, Mary Higgins Clark, the authors of The Chicken Soup Stories etc.

Years passed and after two years of slogging in a software firm, I ended up taking as much as a whole month to complete a book. I began spending more time in front of the PC and TV instead.

But last week, I found myself back in that old habit. I sat down to read a book and sat there till I finished it, getting up in between only when B said that he was starving. He told me that, at last, he was happy to get a Sunday off, without anyone to pester him .

And the credit for all this goes to Preeti Shenoy for her wonderful book “34 bubblegums and candies” .

Some months back, I found a group by the same name while I was blog hopping and thought “ Whatever it’s about, it has to be something real cool”. When I came to know that ’34 Bubblegums and Candies’ was a book, I joined it without thinking twice. ‘What could come in a package with such a sweet and different name?’ (I ain’t seen many people creating that kind of a magic with the title itself).

After Chetan Bhagat, Thushar Raheja and Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan, I’d almost reached the conclusion that Indian writing was starting to follow a similar style when Preeti came in with her Bubblegums and Candies. She talks to us about those little things in life that we always come across in our lives through 34 meaningful stories. Like she’d promised I relished every one of them. I found more Candies than Bubble gums though .

Love, Hope, Humour… It has everything in it. And unlike those complicated stories with messages which leave you thinking “Now what exactly did the author mean by saying that?”, Preeti’s book brings you great messages in a way that is clear to all. Moreover, I found it very easy to relate to incidents narrated in it.

And this is one book that left me with a happy feel, I.e like after a fairy tale where everything ends happily ever after. (About the others I’ve been reading lately :How happy can I get after I reading a story where the heroine gets 2 to 3 divorces before she actually settles down with her dream man? )

So, on the whole, I think Preeti rocks!!

I would love to go on and on about this book, but it would be more fun to read the book to know more about it.

Even though this little thing that I wrote does not qualify as a review, I assure you that it is straight from heart. Those of you who ain’t got their copies yet, I’d suggest you run to the nearest bookstore ASAP before they are sold out.

So, for some love, hope and other such delicacies, there’s ‘34 Bubblegums and Candies’ for you… Grab a copy and Happy reading!!”

I am happy that this book went good and was not like some of the crap I have read earlier by indian authors..

Not to mention ..We all know ..

I was reluctant to not touch books written by Indian authors after reading Chetan Bhagat ..

But I don't regret picking this book ..

I think you will like it ..

This book actually has mixed reviews about it . It depends on what do you like reading:)

Give it a try ..I won't guarantee you but you may enjoy this book ..

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed:)

Omg.... Such a painful read.. I thought the book would be a good account of real-life incidents, but after the first few stories, I am just unwilling to give it a shot & complete the book. The writing is painfully mediocre, actually, less than mediocre - high school English, and lacks character. The stories, apart from a slightly focused story on the AIDS children, the other narratives lacked the depth to hold the reader - or the more seasoned reader / philosopher. These daily lessons were meant to stimulate some thoughts in the reader, but in all honesty, they are sub-standard and more often than not, very contrived. I got the impression that the author possibly didn't know the appropriate usage of some of the terms/ words (The A-Ha moment story, for eg) and in other cases, her narrative of the incident was, well, 'lame'.. A seriously lacking piece of work and a waste of my time. The more annoying bit was the author's school essay-styled inference / conclusion to every story that bordered on a 'moral' or 'lesson learnt' - again, the moral lacked depth and in many cases reeked of potential un-philosophical bias, a sense of judgment or one-uppance - the author & her family being possibly better than the rest of us. I was utterly disappointed and am not going to willfully be reading any more of her books, even though there are some 5-star ratings - I fail to see how an author's writing and eloquence can change from one piece of work to another.

This is to Preeti Shenoy:

You can take it as a constructive criticism if your an optimist-which I know you're or you can simply put it in your junk box saying there are "drains"(in reference to a chapter in your book) like me to demotivate you and you move on because there'll be many more praising your efforts.

But this is what I felt all the way even mid-way while reading:
1) All the mundane activities which u reminisced doesn't necessarily amuse the readers.
2) The book lacks humor which you promised in the preface(remember candy...)
3)Not all the experiences shared by you were routine .Some were really good and noteworthy like "stay or stray" ,"when life tricks you","the promise",etc. but mostly I felt like completing the book in a jiffy with very less to cherish or even relish (as you call it a candy or a bubblegum).
4)The stories did not sync with the main title of your novel "34 bubblegums and candies".Why because you mentioned that there are incidents which make you ponder like chewing a bubblegum which I did not see any because you just reminisced too many incidents.

Lastly I hope that you take it is as what I've mentioned in the start.Looking forward for your other releases.

Your well-wisher (if not a fan)

Preeti’s 34bubblegums and candies is a compilation of 34 small stories and I don’t know why she says that some are candies and some are bubble gums. For me, each of them was a candy, a candy that I would want to keep savoring. Each of these stories conveys a subtle, genuine but a deep message. It’s the honesty in the narration and the genuineness of the text that bowls you our. Most of these candies will begin with the commonest of the incidents or situations that we have encountered, and then, the author takes over, it builds on you like a soft melody and you start adoring the simplicity of her style.

The good thing about her narration is that, at no point in the book, she tries to advocate or preach. She just gives stimuli to your thought process. You end up with a bag of mixed emotions, and eventually you might be convinced that it’s easy to lose control of your life but it’s easier to be in love with it. At least, I was.

When I first completed reading the first 2 chapters of the book... I was sure that it is a "girly" kind of a book.. It is not very usual I read these kinds of books.. and it is not very usual even for me to like books like this... But I did like it..

First of all, I admire Indian author.. Secondly, I admire Indian woman authors...

About the book: It is a collection of 34 experiences in a which is experienced by almost every Indian(male and female)...

I personally loved "Life is what you make it", which is Preeti Shenoy's second book and heard a lot of good reviews about her first book (which is this book), so I was tempted to read this book..

If you believe in book which are not-fascinating-but-a-must-read, then this is a perfect one...

The book had and will have a very inspirational and confident feeling on its readers....

Creative non fiction is a very innovative genre Preeti Shenoy has picked up for her first book.
The whole book is like a collection of fairy tales, except here, the short stories are more of reality than fiction.
Preeti Shenoy, is an excellent author and "34 Bubblegums and Candies" proves it! None of the short stories are anyway linked to each other except for the counts. Each story is unique and distinct. And, take my word, you will love all the stories.
There is one particular story that I love the most. It talks about radiators and drains, and I'm not revealing what the story is about!
It hardly took me 5 hours to read the whole book. Page by page, story by story and you're done before you even know it!
A must read for sure! :)

34 BUBBLEGUMS AND CANDIES
When does we climb stairs while reading a book and hit our head right in the wall? I think this only happens when you are reading one of the Preeti Shenoy's works. As I received the packet from that amazon guy I snatched open it right in front of him on the main gate and he stared at me as if a cat has snatched away his bite and is feasting over it. Poor guy. Again its not a review its just an experience. I climbed over and parked myself on the sofa and got drenchedin the book. All 34 stories are just a peice of masterpeice. One cannot judge which one is better. Some leave you guffawing till the end whereas some give birth to thoughts which turn you mute for a while. With different colours of life author has just summarised a rainbow in this green covered book. And moreover I must accept I am addicted to her and am pretty sure that anyone who would have read her has been addicted to her. She knows how to bind the reader till the very end. She just has the ability to speak out for every mind. The book is so addictive that I cannot take my eyes off it while taking meals...anyway my mom was very annoyed of it, but not everyday you are enveloped in such excitement. The height was when she found me wide awake at 5 am this morning reading this book, she asked "You are not reading some erotica or a story of nasty fantasy naa?" I could only smile at her question. I asked her to read it once I finished reading. This satisfied her. Inshort I can recommend this book to people who want to fall in love with life all over again and again. P.S. my favorite part of this book is 1. Mail Exchange and 2. Live, Love,Laugh.
Cheers! :)

I got this book in a free giveway and though it has its shortcomings I did not regret reading it. If you are looking for quick rapid read then this will serve the purpose.

The title of this book is itself a bit dodgy, but to be fair it has its moments of breezy storytelling and crisp flow.

It is just that this doesn't look like a collection of stories They appear a bit like fragmented collection of blogs which were simply put together to form a book. Now if I were to take a neutral view then a few of these stories do really touch your heart and inspire you. The book can be effectively read as an inspiring take on life and help one overcome road blocks amidst grappling with wicked and trying times. It also has its share of humour which is interspersed adequately at appropriate places.

However, some other stories are bland and routine. They are mere incidents which are a part of our lives and while that is not a problem in itself it appears a little stale and not unusual. The flow is sometimes monotonous.

But to keep the best for the last, the author's stories about her father's death are heart wrenching. It will surely bring a lump in your throat and it's quite admirable that the author chooses to deal with the situation positively and also inspires us in the process. These are moments that stand out in the book and you can perfectly understand where the author is coming from.

She is definitely among the good authors although overall analysis would suggest that this may not be her best book. It is good in parts but you do want more as some of the tales end in a whimper.

A lot of Candies, in fact, most of the stories are candies to me, I have got a huge lot of drains around me, but have to bear with it all, the only bubblegum I guess and that is responsible for producing more bubblegums, however, got used to it, so no worries. But the book is more like taking an interview with you Preeti Shenoy Ji, rather than reading it, it's like interacting with you and getting to know more about you and the tagline goes: " If you want to know more about #PreetiShenoy Ji, just read this, you can even get to know why I adore her so much. " Wonderful book, simple but beautiful and at the same time classically classy, especially the 16th chapter is the best candy that I read and it is too sweet to handle.🙂 A debut book, this good no wonder she is in the league of top authors. She is one of the best and finest and always tending to be a better version of her.

34 bubblegum and candies is the first book written by Preeti Shenoy.

In the book she looks back on the incidents in her real life and has drawn inferences from them. It is more like a collection of her reflection on things, or her way of looking at things. You would be inclined to do so after reading them is not a guarantee.

She comes across a very optimistic person, hence these conclusions she makes may not be for others. The English used is simple. Anyone who picks up the book would be able to understand it.

The book could be read for some motivation, optimism and simple humour.

This book is a collection of incidences from the author’s life which she has presented in form of short and relatable stories. It’s like picking up your best memorise from your daily journals and presenting it to the readers either in first person or third person perspective. These stories last for 2-3 pages on an average , so it’s easy to keep your focus on the content without getting distracted.

I appreciate the way the author has written the concluding story about how that book has come into existence encompassing the idea of “live, love, laugh” and do everything that one wishes to do for enriching the experiences of this mortal life.

An eclectic collection of anecdotes and incidents which touched my heart and brought warmth to my soul. I loved the simplicity of articulation and felt that the book was not penned down with an intention to impress but rather to express. The cover and the title are cute and fascinating. The book appealed to me on a personal level. It taught me to relish simple things in life and to cherish the bonds which are beyond materialism.

It is basicallyis a non-fictional compilation of daily happenings where some are tasty and some are bitter. The first thing that attracts one to the book is its interesting title. The book contains 34 incidents from day to day life, which may and have happened to you and me. I personally liked the book but thought not all incidents were that engaging or worthy of penning down. It is a light read and you can pickup this book if you are bored sitting in train or standing in a queue.

Wow I didn't know random diary entries could be made into a book! This was below average, the writing was pretentious and the incidents, as I said were okay but fit for diary entries or blog posts, not a book. This is the type of book you can read at the end of the year if you're running behind Goodreads challenges. It's easy to read and a no brainer. I don't know why I read this in the middle of the year lol.

Disappointed in the book of short stories, I really expected stronger literary quality in the stories. However, the author is predominantly narrating with limited rich detail and depth. It seems more like a short autobiography of startling events. I finished the quick read in a day, but may or may not choose to give the other works of the author a chance.

A compilation of 34 real life incidents from the author’s life, the book fails to invoke enough interest. Barring a few, most of the stories are routine and sparingly humorous. I did laugh out loud while reading a few! But as much as her other book “A hundred little flames” was a wonderful read, this one.. I was happy when it got over.
