When two women are found dead on the coast of North Carolina with identical unidentified coins in their pockets, the town is left wondering if these deaths are truly accidental or connected murders. The town has a rich history focused on Blackbeard, including a Blackbeard Festival only a few weeks out, when two more coins are discovered and an expert is brought in to identify them. Are the coins part of Blackbeard’s lost treasure? Are the coins cursed as legend says? Is there a murderer on the loose waiting to strike again?
This books focuses on Eva, a historical expert, and the police chief, William, as they work together to figure out the mystery behind the deaths of Catherine, William’s late wife and Eva’s friend, and another local woman named Gabby. I enjoyed the depth of the history given about Blackbeard and felt like I learned more history as well as enjoyed this thriller. I also enjoyed the emotional struggle William dealt with over the death of his wife and the town’s speculation on him. He was an easy character to love and sympathize with. Eva’s personality and respect for her friend also made her a character that was easy to cheer for and connect to. I never found myself bored reading this book and looked forward to picking it back up when I had a free minute. The pace wasn’t insanely fast, but it did hold my attention well and didn’t drag.
I would read another book by this author, and I would be happy to see this book have a sequel. All the way around, great job! It was a lovely read.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable mystery, set in NC’s Outer Banks. Police chief William and local historian Eva get pulled into mysterious deaths and gold coins, and the mystery soon involves the death a year earlier of William’s wife. The two must figure out how the coins and deaths are linked and who is responsible as they figure out how to move ahead from grieving. I loved the Outer Banks setting, and the mystery centered on Blackbeard’s treasure in a plausible way that didn’t distract from the story. There were a few minor elements that didn’t quite add up for me, but they weren’t central to the plot. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Many thanks to both Beaufort Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Seafarer's Secret, by Carol Ann Collins.

With the entire town whispering about Blackbeard, cursed coins, and lost treasure, it becomes hard to separate what is true and what is a myth. Sounds like my kind of town! And even though The Seafarer's Secret differs from the type of books I usually gravitate towards, I really liked it!
I loved reading about Blackbeard and I'm glad those parts were included in the book. (Not to worry. It was more of a sideline and didn't take away from the primary story at all.) The Seafarer's Secret has murder, unidentified coins, buried treasure, long-lost friends, and more! I recommend it.
The Seafarer's Secret combines history, murder, mystery, friendship, with a bit of a cozy vibe. The story is set in Eden, North Carolina in the Outer Banks. Police Chief William Templeton has been a widower for a year. His wife Catherine was found dead in a sand hole on the beach, determined to be an accident, with her alcohol content high. A year later, a woman is found on the beach, apparently drowned, also intoxicated. When they find a gold coin on her body, it is finally revealed that Catherine also had a coin when she was found. Catherine's death is reopened with the police believing both these women were killed and by the same man. The coins are brought to Eva Knightly, a local historian and Blackbeard expert. When two more coins are brought to Eva by a local pastor, things begin to heat up.
I enjoyed this story a lot. I love cozy mysteries, and although the police are investigation this one, Eva is doing a bit of her own investigating. I am also a huge history buff, so I was pulled in on both fronts. I really liked the characters in this book. William is torn. He is attracted to Eva, but still carries a lot of guilt over Catherine's death. He is a great detective and excellent at this job. He has stepped down as chief until the investigation into Catherine's death is solved. The foursome in the restaurant each morning sharing gossip are a wonderful addition to the story. I loved how they seemed to have information that others didn't have. Eva's friend Amelia, is her sidekick. She is also an amateur genealogist and is able to share some information with Eva. They have each other's backs and I loved their friendship. At the end of each chapter, there is a journal entry or a portion of a letter from either Blackbeard, his wife Mary or an unknown companion to Mary. The murderer had me stumped, and although there weren't any apparent suspects, I really liked who it was and how the ending played out. The setting was wonderful, the history of Blackbeard and the great characters pulled me in and held me captive from start to finish. The mystery had lots of suspense and some scary moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. I read the author's notes which share what is fiction and what parts of the Blackbeard story are based on historical facts. A wonderful story that I recommend to those who enjoy mystery, a great setting, some history and little bit of romance.
I wanted to read The Seafarers’s Secret because of its interesting plot. I’ve never read a pirate novel and don’t know much about their history so I thought a current day detective that explores the past would be fun.
The book is about historian Eva Knightly who ends up trying to solve two murders that seem to be connected to Blackbeard’s lost treasure. Because I don’t know anything about pirating history, I don’t know what parts of the book are historically correct but I wasn’t interested enough to do the research to find out.
In between chapters there are snippets of a woman’s diary from the 1700’s. They are brief paragraphs that didn’t add up to a whole story so I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to glean from them and even though they were said to be from the 1700’s, it was written in current English so that didn’t make sense to me.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I’ll only say that there is a twist at the end but I found it predictable and the fact that most of the events could be hidden without anyone knowing is too hard to believe.
Overall, it was a pleasant read and I enjoyed the quirky townspeople but I think someone who knows more about pirates would enjoy it more.
Many thanks to BookSirens and Carol Ann Collins for the free ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
“ Secrets are revealed. Lies are exposed. And in order to have a future, William and Eva will have to delve into the past”
I wanted to read this book for a few reasons. First, I live in NC and have a house on the outer banks that I so much enjoy visiting. Second, the blurb sounded great and thirdly, the author. I absolutely was NOT disappointed.
A woman’s body is found and inside her pocket is a coin. Not just any coin though. One that was identical to the coin found in William Templeton’s dead wife’s body about a year ago. William is the police Chief for Eden NC and now wants to open up his wife’s death investigation that was deemed accidental when it happened a year ago. Eva Knightly is a historian who will help with the investigation due to the rarity of the coins found and of course the towns history is focused on Blackbeard and his discoveries. Now the two are focused on investigating the death of the two women and the coins that are showing up in various places. They find out that the coins are supposed to be cursed. Can the two find who the killer is before someone else is dead or is there something else more sinister happening?
The story goes into depth on the history of Black beard but not so much that you would get bored. I really enjoyed learning about the outer banks and the rich history with pirates. The police procdural aspect was well done and the characters were so well formed and developed. I truly found this book to be very informative and yet also a very well written mystery that you will wait patiently for the ending on. I promise you will want to know how it ends.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley as well as the author and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.
This was a very enjoyable romantic mystery. I had fun but I also think it wasn’t anything special, and I want to state that that’s totally okay imo because of how many books alike I read. I was left with a bit of a ‘why’ feeling to some plotpoints. But this is the perfect mystery read for someone who wants a break of heavy storylines. Lovely characters -I loved our foursome in the diner every morning- , and a cosy albeit sometimes a bit slow pace. Only thing I’m a bit upset about is that it takes half the book to pick up pace, we then get a hint and NO ONE in the book picks up on it, nor is any attention still given to it. Anyway, fun light read!

Thanks to Netgalley and Beaufort Book Publishing for letting me read the ARC from this book. ❤️
I really like the opening sentence of the chapter, "For anyone who ever dreamed about growing up to be a pirate, fighting a pirate, or falling in love with a pirate."
This story opens with the conflict over the discovery of a woman's body which was found in the cave when people were fishing. Not only that, because a gold coin was found in the corpse of a woman named Gabby Clark. The same gold coin was found a year ago from the body of Catherine Harper – the wife of an Eden, police officer named William Templeton.
Gabby is a cleaning service who likes to clean an office and Doris's house. Gabby's death is still being investigated as to whether she was killed or drowned. Meanwhile Gabby really hates the sea, so it's impossible for her to swim. Moreover, Gabby's relationship with her very toxic boyfriend named Hamilton. Hamilton is suspected of having a hand in Gabby's death, but he is out of town.
“I know what people say about her, and I saw how toxic her relationship with Hamilton was, but there was more to her than that. She was one of my best employees. Probably the best.” Doris said.
Because the coincidence is the same as those gold coins. Gabby's death is also investigated by William. And William is assisted by Eva who is a historian who works at the Historical Society. They investigated the gold coins, whether they belonged to Blackbeard's treasure or Devil's coin.
So, each chapter must end with one or two sentences from The Journal of an Unknown Woman, Early 1700's. So he talks about Mery and Blackbeard in the past, about Mery's married life and the birth of his son.
💞 I really like Carol's writing, because since the beginning of the chapter there has been a trigger for conflict that keeps me interested in turning every page and makes me wonder who the real culprit is. The lack of writing is not too detailed in writing narrative, I feel I have lost the integrity in several places and the interactions between characters.
This is a modern-day mystery set in the Outer Banks with a historical theme featuring pirates, Blackbeard, and cursed gold coins. The setting made it the perfect location for a pirate themed mystery. I really enjoyed the journal entries revolving around Blackbeard. This was an enjoyable read that kept me questioning if there was a connection to the past. The main character, Eva, is a historian and Blackbeard expert. It was fun to read a mystery while also getting a bit of a history lesson. I also loved the little bit of slow-burn romance between Eva and William. I know this is not part of a series, but I would be interested to see what happens next with Eva, William and the town of Eden, NC.
Thanks to the publisher for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
When I saw the cover and title of this book, I was intrigued to learn more. I didn't know much about Blackbeard or the Outer Banks so I really enjoyed learning more of the history of Blackbeard and reading about the beautiful setting. The mystery in the story - the coins, the treasure, the deaths, made me want to keep turning the pages to find out how it was all connected. I highly recommend this book and will be buying a copy to keep once it hits the bookstores! Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
I enjoyed this story so much! The first 20 pages had lots of characters & background and then I was immediately sucked in! I had to know what happened. Lies, treasure, history, love & friendships… what more could you ask for. The entire book was worth the read for the last chapter. I will be purchasing a hard copy for my bookshelf as soon as it’s released.
“That's the burden of love, isn't it? Being tied to something and not being able to let go?" "No," Eva said. "That's the best part of love. Being tied to something and knowing you're finally home.”
Thank you so much @beaufortbooks for a gifted copy of this book!
✨ 𝙈𝙮 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 ✨ This is a present day murder mystery book mixed with history! So not historical fiction, but it takes a fun dip into the history of Blackbeard the Pirate, his treasure and his mysterious wife and lineage!
I liked how this book had mysterious letters from an “unknown girl” about Blackbeard and his wife at the beginning of each chapter. It brought some background history and knowledge of Blackbeard to the forefront.
The story follows William, the police chief of Eden, and Eva, a historian. Two women in the town of Eden were murdered and they each were found with a mysterious gold coin on them, believed to be a part of Blackbeard’s treasure (because it was supposedly buried in this area where he had a home).
The two main characters are brought together by common interest in the murders. And they also might have a romantic interest in one another! The romance aspect was kept to a minimum, so this does stay a murder mystery focused story!
I had some guesses as to the culprit of the murders later on in the book, but still was not 100% sure until it was revealed. The mystery and letters kept me intrigued throughout the book, and I enjoyed learning about Blackbeard too!

It was the setting that first attracted me to this novel. The Outer Banks of North Carolina - a place I visited once and long to return in person, though via fiction will have to suffice for now...
The novel centers around a police chief, William Templeton who is in his thirties and is a widower. Just one year ago his wife died in a tragic accident - they were separated at the time. Guilt plagues him daily. Now, a woman's body has been found on the beach with an ancient gold coin. William learns that his wife had a similar gold coin with her when she died as well. Why wasn't he told this sooner? Does it mean that the deaths of these two young women are linked? Perhaps his wife's death was NOT an accident after all... He is compelled to remove himself from the investigation.
Local historian Eva Knightly was William's wife's best friend. She is approached to try to find out more about these coins. Then, strangely, a local Methodist minister brings Eva two more similar coins. He says they were left in his church's offering plates.
William and Eva confer - all the while fighting a deep attraction to each other. Neither wants to disrespect the memory of William's wife Catherine.
Meanwhile, Eva is organizing the annual Blackbeard festival - an event that spurs thousands of tourists to visit their local area. Blackbeard was said to have spent his last days in the Outer Banks and many believe his renowned treasure can be found there. When it is determined that the old gold coins found were of the right vintage to have been a part of Blackbeard's hoard, things start to really get interesting.
With a delightful and successful mingling of well researched fact and fiction, the author has created a story that brings the Blackbeard legend to life. All the while mixing it in with a modern day murder mystery. The story was well-paced and the characters were authentic.
Though I have not heard that this novel is the beginning of a new series, it certainly has that potential. I for one would like to visit the Outer Banks again to learn more about the future lives of William and Eva. Recommended!
The small town of Eden, North Carolina, was rocked when William Templeton’s wife, Catherine, was found dead on a nearby island. Her death was ruled accidental until, a year later, another woman named Gabby turned up dead in the same area. The link between them? Each had a gold coin in her pocket, suggesting their deaths were connected after all.
This murder mystery weaves together the myth of Blackbeard and his buried treasure, creating a story that’s both whimsical and haunting. I loved the small-town atmosphere, the historical thread, the sense of loss, and the hint of romance. The characters were written with such care that I’ll remember them long after finishing.
The journal entries between chapters were confusing at first, but once the story came together, everything clicked beautifully. I did guess the killer halfway through, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment. What did hold it back a bit were a few grammatical errors and awkward sentences that occasionally pulled me out of the story.
Overall, The Seafarer’s Secret was an unexpected gem, one I can’t believe sat on my backlist for so long. If you love small-town mysteries with a touch of pirate lore, I highly recommend picking this one up. 🏴☠️
Rating: 5 Stars!! Review: Thank you to Beaufort Books for sending me this FREE ARC Copy to promote and review for them as part of their Review Crew last year.
This was my first time reading a Mystery Thriller by Carol so I wasnt sure what to expect but I have to say I really enjoyed this one. It wasn't predictable at all. Lots of twists and turns as well as edge of your seat "Oh no " Moments.
The Characters were fun and enjoyable to read about. It was hard to pick my favorite since I seemed to like all of the Characters except for the customer at the diner didn't care for his Know It All attitude.
The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like I was actually in Eden North Carolina while reading especially when the scenery was described.
Overall a good Mystery Thriller about a Murderer who puts the Sam coin in his victims pockets. I do wish this was part of a series because i'd LOVE to see what case the Detective would work on next.
I really enjoyed this small town mystery. Carol Ann Collins does a great job at sucking you into the story and making it feel like you're there in the small town. It is such an immersive story and writing that you completely forget that you're reading it. I flew through the book.
Also the slow burn between William and Eva was just amazing. They were such well developed characters! The struggle that William faced with his emotions was well written and made me feel sympathy for him. At times this book wasn't always really fast paced for me but I was never bored.
Ill be looking forward to read more book Collins will publish in the future because this one was absolutely amazing.
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This definitely felt like a book whose plot was formed around the inclusion of the history of Blackbeard.
I’m pretty sure I figured out who the killer was before the halfway point. Too many obvious hints were dropped for me to not figure it out.
The snippets of letters and journal entries between the chapters was interesting but it wasn’t until I got towards the end of the book that I saw their significance to the story.
I read this purely because I love the history of pirates. I wish there would’ve been a bit more included.
Thank you to the publisher, NetGalley and BookSirens for an advance copy of this book.
I’m so glad the author didn’t give up her story no matter how long it took. What a fun read! Murder (or is it?) mystery, small town romance, history, and pirates! I love that her author’s note explained what was real and what wasn’t so I didn’t have to go down the Google rabbit hole. What an amazing imagination!

“The Seafarer’s Secret” by Carol Ann Collins is an intriguing and charismatic story that very nicely combines pirates, treasure hunts, and murder mysteries. This absorbing tale offers the reader a brief and comfortable ride that is interesting right from the beginning to the very end. The well worked out plot indeed keeps the reader interested and wanting to discover what is in it, and it is a good choice for those who are novices and people who want to read a simple and gripping literary work. I would recommend this book to all mystery lovers!
Thank you to Great Escape Book Tours and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.
Edward Teach or more famously Blackbeard and his life as a pirate is one of wonder. For a pirate to spurn violence and still instill the fear of gods in his opponents is no mean feat. Author Carol Ann Collins uses the pirate’s story and the rumor of his treasure to create a tale with all the ingredients mixed in perfect proportions and also provide us with food for thought as to his marketing skills, so much that 300 years later he is still remembered as this ferocious pirate. The author offers mystery, murder, secrets, and a slow burn romance in this fascinating tale of a treasure hunt set around a small town called Eden in North Carolina.
The opening scene of four oldies getting together to gossip over coffee and Eva Knightly shamelessly eavesdropping on the foursome to gather the shenanigans happening in the town was like an instant attention grabbing one that I felt invested wholly into the story from the word go. Eva as the town historian has more than a passing interest in the coin discovered with the body of a drowned victim and to know that the same had been found with Catherine, her best friend’s body also spikes her curiosity. Knowing that the town views William, Catherine’s husband, and the police chief with suspicious eyes, Eva decides to get to the bottom of both suspicious deaths.
The Seafarer’s Secret has the plot going wondrously in parts but losing steam somewhere in the middle. Even though the murder mystery begins as the central plot point, the investigation I felt could have more gripping. The author beautifully crafted the romance between Eva and William as the reader connects to the emotions of William as he doubts his ability to give his 100 percent to another woman after being burned by the previous one. There are minor discrepancies in the story, like William, despite being the police chief unaware of the coin found on his wife. Definitely not a big deal just me being a weirdo, especially coz the author has very skilfully merged the history of Blackbeard thru snippets of diary entries and giving glimpses of his love story with Mary. Though I did guess the suspense and the identity of the murderer there were still things that were cleared up only with the reveal and made it thoroughly enjoyable,
Carol Ann Collins writes with an ease that the reader gets transported to the little town of Eden and its secrets effortlessly. The secondary characters including Amelia, and her grandfather Elbert, Julia, and Emmerson have been sketched with depth that they feel like people you meet in real life.
Sold for Blackbeard and his treasure.

"The Seafarer's Secret" by Carol Ann Collins is a captivating blend of mystery, romance, and historical intrigue that keeps readers eagerly turning pages until the very end. With a skillful narrative, Collins weaves together a tale of lost treasure, hidden secrets, and the power of love in the most unexpected places.
At its core, the novel introduces us to the enigmatic William Templeton, the widower and former police chief of Eden, North Carolina. His life takes an unexpected turn when the drowning of a local woman reveals a mysterious old gold coin in her pocket, identical to one found on his estranged wife Catherine over a year ago. This revelation forces William to confront his past and step down from his position as police chief, setting the stage for a complex and compelling story.
Enter Eva Knightly, a historian and expert on the legendary pirate Blackbeard. Her involvement in the investigation adds depth to the narrative as she tries to uncover the significance of the coins and the reasons behind Catherine's silence about them. Eva's character is well-crafted, and her expertise in history adds a layer of authenticity to the story that history enthusiasts will appreciate.
The novel beautifully explores the evolving relationship between William and Eva, which is marked by a slow-burning and palpable chemistry. Their partnership as they work to unravel the mysteries of Eden is one of the book's strongest aspects. The tension and attraction between them add depth to the plot, keeping readers emotionally invested.
Collins masterfully uses the setting of Eden, North Carolina, to create an atmosphere of intrigue and suspense. As more coins surface, and the town becomes consumed by whispers of Blackbeard, cursed coins, and lost treasure, the line between myth and reality blurs. This setting not only serves as a backdrop but also becomes a character in itself, adding an extra layer of depth to the story.
"The Seafarer's Secret" successfully combines elements of history, mystery, and romance into a thrilling narrative. It keeps readers guessing as they navigate the intricate web of secrets and lies that shroud Eden, North Carolina. The pacing is well-executed, with revelations and twists strategically placed throughout the story to maintain momentum.
In summary, Carol Ann Collins has delivered an engaging and immersive novel with "The Seafarer's Secret." It's a tale that effortlessly balances historical intrigue, a slow-burning romance, and a compelling mystery. For readers seeking a captivating journey into the past and present, this book is an absolute must-read. Collins' storytelling prowess shines, making "The Seafarer's Secret" a stellar addition to the world of mystery and romance fiction.

Carol Ann Collins debuts in The Seafarer’s Secret. It is undoubtedly a promising novel to read. She writes a note at the beginning of the book. For anyone who ever dreamed about growing up to be a pirate, fighting a pirate, or falling in love with a pirate. Granted, the sleepy coastal town of Eden, North Carolina, was not known to be a hot spot for news junkies or those wishing to engage in political debates. Most of those who had even heard of the town had only done so because they had passed through it on the way to one of Eden’s more famous Outer Banks sister towns. The remaining people who knew of Eden could be divided into two groups: residents of Eden and history buffs. Eva happily considered herself a member of both groups. She bought a hose in a small Eden neighborhood about five years ago. However, not everyone living in Eden is considered a resident. Eva also fit perfectly in the second group. She was a history buff. Elbert announces that a body was found this morning down at the cove. This makes the town curious about such mystery news. The last time they went radio silent was when the chief’s wife, Catherine Harper, was found over a year ago. As always, mentioning her late friend’s name made Eva feel guilty. The medical examiner indicated that there was a high level of alcohol found in her blood. But Catherine had only been at the bar because she and Eva were celebrating Eva’s appointment as chairman of Eden’s annual Blackbeard Festival. William Templeton and Death had crossed paths many times in the past. It was a known fact of life for anyone working in law enforcement, even for a small-town police chief such as himself. Death was rarely pretty and often unexpected, and those two things could indeed be said about the newly deceased. Gabby Clark. What makes Gabby’s death is that there is also a gold coin found on her. It is the same gold coin found on Catherine as well. Is it a coincidence? With that being said, Eva needs to find justice for her friend’s death. On the part of William, he needs to find justice for his former wife’s death to regain his innocence as a law enforcement officer. The mystery and suspense do not end there; a note is written after every chapter. Who wrote it, and how is it connected to the puzzle they are solving?
The Seafarer’s Secret is written profoundly. It is one of the books where the author invested time and emotion to write their first book. It is not just a straightforward novel filled with mystery. Some clues mark a blurred distinction between fiction and reality. It has been a long time since I encountered a main character that I could relate to, and I am just so happy to experience another opportunity. Like me, I recommend this book to anyone who loves History, Mystery, and the Sea. I have read this, among several of my favorite Advanced Reader’s Copies.

If you like books about hidden treasure and pirates, you'll enjoy this one. It takes place in a small town of Eden on the outer banks of North Carolina as residents prepare for a Blackbeard festival. Eva Knightly moved to Eden five years ago and has since been working as the staff historian at the historical society. Involved in the upcoming festival, she is sidetracked when she learns a body was found of a woman named Gabby who cleaned the home of the police chief's grandmother. Years ago, the police chief, William, had lost his wife, Catherine, when she fell into a sand hole on the beach and was covered by the sand. William hasn't gotten over the death or his guilt, even though they'd been separated when the accident happened and that Catherine had been having an affair with an unknown man.
When it's discovered that a strange gold coin was found on Gabby and had also been found on Catherine but never reported, Eva finds herself involved in helping William solve what begins to look like two murders. Catherine was a friend of Eva's, despite the fact Eva had a crush on William during their marriage but never acted on it.
Why were the coins found on the two dead women, and were their deaths murder? What's the connection between them and is the local pastor involved when he turns in two duplicate coins that he claims were left in the collection plate, or is someone else responsible? Who was Catherine seeing, and will Eva and William solve her murder and that of Gabby? Will that eventually get together? These questions and others are answered in this readable book that also includes letters written by an anonymous woman at the time of Blackbeard. While the author fictionalizes some of the information about the pirate, she also includes researched facts. I enjoyed the story and the conclusion of the mystery.
This was a BDG pick, about pirates and the Outer Banks. I know zilch about either and the cover was uninspiring for me. But with all BDG picks I dug in; and was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The plot is interesting with an historical twist tied to Blackbeard. And all pirates have hidden treasure of which everyone wants to be the lucky finder. This story is more than finding where X marks the spot. This is the story of friendship, the small beach resort town of Eden. It is well written, has a great setting and well developed characters.
Since I have no real depth of pirate or Blackbeard knowledge my concern was whether or not I would be lost or find the book uninteresting. The author addresses this problem by introducing some background on Blackbeard and his personal life at the beginning of each chapter via parts of letters or quotes mostly from "The Journal From an Unknown Woman, Early 1700's" or from "Letter from Blackbeard to wife, Mary 1718" These insertions cleverly filled in any gaps needed for the reader to follow along. Whew...
The plot surrounds a woman found dead on the beach. But it's a gold coin from 1715 that makes the death look suspicious. Is a death of the Chief's wife, the year prior, now somehow connected? The Chief's wife was also found with a gold coin from 1715. Are the coins a hoax? Are they real and are the murders connected to each other? Are the coins part of Blackbeard's treasure rumored to be buried in the Outer Banks? When 2 more identical gold 1715 coins show up in The Methodist Church's Sunday collection basket has someone found Blackbeard's treasure?
The real treasure of this book is the friendships and close knit community while it embraces multiple tragedies for the town and some of its citizens. It also begs the question, how well does history tell the truth when it comes to legends.
“Alas, pirates. We are not known for our gentle ways.” Thank you Carol Ann Collins and Beaufort Books for this free book. “The Seafarer’s Secret” by Carol Ann Collins ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: Mystery. Location: Eden, North Carolina, USA (in the Outer Banks near Nag’s Head). Date: Summer, present.
Eden police chief William Templeton (32) finds an old gold coin in the pocket of drowned local woman Gabby Clark. It’s identical to a coin found on his estranged wife Catherine’s dead body a year ago. An investigation is launched into a connection between the 2 deaths. Historian/Blackbeard expert Eva Knightly helps identify the coins. When more coins are found, Eva and William know it’s not coincidence. The whole town is talking about Blackbeard’s treasure, the cursed “Devil’s Coins”, and murder. If it’s not resolved, the annual Blackbeard festival will be cancelled.
Author Collins has created a book where a witty, slightly sarcastic character and a quiet, brooding character might someday have a chance at romance-if the deaths and curse would just get solved so the annual Blackbeard Festival can go on! Collins uses 4 breakfast companions (chatting each morning in a diner) to share past and present information with other characters and with us. She divides chapters with excerpts from a Blackbeard-related journal to create a compelling story-within-a-story about 1770s Blackbeard and his Mary. Their briefly-told tale is as interesting as the main plot. In fact, I wish the Blackbeard and Mary story was longer! It’s a humid North Carolina summer filled with murder, red herrings, and historical references, and it’s 4 stars from me🌵📚💁🏼♀️
Thank you to Beaufort Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book.
I would say my rating right after reading was a 3.5 but keeping in mind this was a debut novel and the fact that I genuinely feel the potential of Carol Ann Collins' future works, I gave The Seafarer's Secret a 4.
For me, I thought it was a little slow to start and I found it a little hard to get hooked, I think part of it was just a lot of background of setting the scene and Catherine's story. I kept at it (because of course I still had to know who did it) and once I hit around 40% I got absolutely hooked.
The book really does have you rooting for William and Eva to get together. I do wish we could have had an "aha moment" of Eva realizing William was the one to pick the locks but that's just a minor thing really. Their relationship didn't feel forced at all and felt very real throughout.
On the mystery side of things, Carol Ann Collins had me guessing for a little bit who committed the murders/crime. There weren't any crazy or unnecessary plot twists which I do appreciate. Honestly, it kind of reminded me of a Hallmark Mystery movie in all the best ways. I also liked the Blackbeard subplot. I thought it was really fun and unique.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read and really hope there's a sequel. I would love to see what happens between Eva and William, if Blackbeard's treasures are ever found, and anything else that may happen in the town of Eden. I would also dare to say this would be a great beach read!
Before anything, I would like to thank Carol Ann Collins, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Seafarer's Secret was a nice book to read, with a cozy small town vibe and themes mixing history and fiction. It has an interesting mystery, though it could have been more in depth. It was a quick read and I enjoyed every second of it.
Positives: * The diary entries every chapter are super interesting and highlight the theme of the story. * The small town vibe is very well executed. * I enjoyed the writing style and the reading flew quickly and easily. * The subplots are interesting and cozy. I specially loved the quartet the six-pack and hoped for more scenes with them. * The characters are interesting and lively. * I liked how William acknowledged his mistakes as well as Catherine's during their marriage and is able to respect her memory, even after what she did and despite his feelings for another woman.
Negatives: * A few pieces of dialogue felt too long and unnatural. * Eva and William's feelings are a bit too on the nose from the beginning. The scenes of them together showed how they felt quite well, so it would've felt more interesting if we weren't told from the get go that they were attracted to each other. * The mystery of the story could have been a little more flashed out, with more suspicious activities from the suspects. * The antagonist has a personality transplant in a second to fit the crazy villain stereotype.
