Monster Match

Rate this book
She met a hot reanimated dead guy at a monster speed dating event. Then things really got weird…

Lucy West wasn’t looking for a husband at the Monster Match. She was just there to admire some gothic architecture and score a free meal.

Then she met him.

Viktor Adamovic defied science. Literally. He was amonster who’d been stitched together from multiple, um, donors and resurrected centuries ago. Lucy liked him immediately. But the protective, possessive beast he kept leashed beneath his polished exterior? She wanted that guy in a big way.

Then the weirdness really hit the fan when he proposed a marriage of convenience. To her!

It seemed like the perfect solution to her problems and his. And in a fairy tale, that would’ve been their happy ending.

Too bad this wasn’t that kind of story.

Because when the ghosts of Viktor’s past come calling, Lucy realizes she’s no princess—and if she wants her happily ever after with the monster of her dreams, she’s going to have to fight for it…and him…

Monster Match is a standalone, paranormal, sweet but spicy fantasy romance about a cinnamon-roll monster and the curvy, snarky heroine who steals his heart. It’s a feel-good romance with plenty of witty banter and rescue dogs (because what book is complete without dogs?) Download today and get ready to fall for Viktor and Lucy.

The normal:

Isabel Jordan writes because it’s the only profession that allows her to express her natural sarcasm and not be fired. She is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Isabel lives in the US with her husband, her son son, a neurotic Shepherd mix and a ginormous Great Dane mix named Jerkface. (Don't feel bad for Jerkface. He really is a jerk.)

The weird:

Now that the normal stuff is out of the way, here’s some weird-but-true facts that would never come up in polite conversation. Isabel Jordan:

1. Is terrified of butterflies (don’t judge…it’s a real phobia called lepidopterophobia)
2. Is a lover of all things ironic (hence the butterfly on the first edition cover of Semi-Charmed)
3. Is obsessed with Supernatural, Game of Thrones, and Dog Whisperer.
4. Hates coffee. Drinks a Diet Mountain Dew every morning.
5. Will argue to the death that Pretty in Pink ended all wrong. (Seriously, she ends up with the guy who was embarrassed to be seen with her and not the nice guy who loved her all along? That would never fly in the world of romance novels.)
6. Would eat Mexican food every day, if given the choice.
7. Reads two books a week in varied genres.
8. Refers to her Kindle as “the precious”.
9. Thinks puppy breath is one of the best smells in the world.
10. Is a social media idgit. (Her husband had to explain to her last week what the point of Twitter was. She’s still a little fuzzy on what Instagram and Pinterest do.)
11. Kicks ass at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
12. Stole her tagline idea from her son. Her tagline idea was, “Never wrong, not quite right.” She liked her son’s idea better.
13. Breaks one vacuum cleaner a year because she ignores standard maintenance procedures (Really, you’re supposed to empty the canister every time you vacuum? Does that seem excessive to anyone else?)
14. Is still mad at the WB network for cancelling Angel in 2004.
15. Can’t find her way from her bed to her bathroom without her glasses, but refused eye surgery, even when someone else offered to pay. (They lost her at “eye flap”. Seriously, look it up. Scary stuff.)

This is going to be kind of a mixed review...I really liked the majority of this book. It was cute and sweet with a side of steam. Lucy (h) meets Viktor (H) at a monster speed dating event being held at his house. Both have been unappreciated and lacked acceptance until they meet each other and have an instant attraction and chemistry. Viktor proposes a marriage of convenience to help her and because he needs a green card. Their relationship was adorable and angst-free, then the book takes a weird (to me) turn close to the end, but closes with their HEA. Written in third person, dual POV. Slight om drama from h's ex and slight ow drama regarding H's creator (neither has any romantic feelings towards either one during this story), neither were virgins.

Lucy recently broke up with her cheating boyfriend, who kicked her out of their apartment, and also recently lost her job so she's pretty down on her luck at the start of the book. She also has no family or friends to speak of. Viktor is a reanimated monster with some darkness in his past, who's been alive hundreds of years and is wealthy, but considered an oddity even in the monster community. He's such a cinnamon roll, being caring and gentlemanly to Lucy, but also has a bit of a rough side that he tries to keep under wraps. In turn she added some much needed light to his life. I enjoyed them connecting at the speed dating event, going on their first date, and acclimating to being married. Viktor wants to wait to have sex so this is a slow burn in that department, but there's plenty of tension between them. Once the steam occurs, it is spicy, although I think there was only one extended scene.

I loved how protective they each were of the other - Lucy's ex gets his comeuppance and there's an awesome scene with the immigration agent evaluating them. Most of the book is just Lucy and Viktor, but my favorite part of the book was a scene where adopted dogs join their family. I'm a huge dog lover and my heart went mushy and I ate it up.

Not much happens other than these two and I was ok with that, I like sweet, low conflict books esp with monster goodness from time to time. I had some questions about the world and the reanimating, but I was fine with it. Where this book lost me was in the last quarter (maybe, I wasn't looking at my %) when the conflict comes in related to Viktor's past and suddenly I had so many questions. It was also pretty jarring because there's suddenly action/suspense/danger. Then the conflict resolution felt rushed and the epilogue was a summary of how everything ended up afterwards and that Lucy and Viktor lived HEA. The conflict and ending just didn't work for me personally, but because most of the story did, I settled on 3 stars for this one.

Nawwww!!! What a cute marriage of convenience romance about a lonely Frankenstein-esque monster MMC and a down-on-her-luck-but-taking-charge-of-her-life human FMC.

Very sweet and spicy (as advertised). They’re both like “how did I get so lucky that you’re interested in me?” as their eyes are like “you are so hot. Do me, please”.

I wasn’t 100% sold on the third act conflict (tbh I just wanted to keep riding the happy vibes), but I can appreciate the closure it provided and that it also led to an even better HEA.

5 total wish fulfillment stars!

Cinnamon roll monster who keeps adopting needy dogs because he just can’t say no?
A fmc who enjoys money and being pampered, is sex positive, doesn’t hide behind miscommunications and refuses to take the high road?
No push pull, low angst, external conflict vibes?
AND some praise kink?

Literal fantasy perfection.

What if you could go to a speed dating event where humans are legit looking for monster husbands? Lucy didn't plan on going to the event for this purpose. She was down on her luck, almost homeless and down to the last 40 dollars in her bank account cause she was also laid off and was like what the hell? Let me go get some free food. She was standing behind a plant people watching when Viktor couldn't help but jump into the conversation she was having with herself. Viktor is a reanimated human -- (think Frankenstein but stitched together with attractive people parts).

He is so intrigued by this woman that he makes her a proposal that would be convenient for both of them: marry me so I can get my green card and you'll have housing and money and nothing to worry about. Sexual advances are optional but welcome. They then go on this journey of learning things about one another and growing to eventually love each other.

I really enjoyed this story. Viktor was absolutely adorable. It was refreshing too because he wasn't of the mentality that he was completely unattractive but he wasn't seeking attention either. He loved the hell out of Lucy (and she, him!) and there's a scene that involves the adoption of multiple dogs that is so wholesome.

Lucy and Viktor had good chemistry for me and their intimate scenes were hot. There's a little bit of backstory about Viktor's life that briefly spills into the present but Lucy was so fun and took everything in stride. The one thing I will say though is there are a lot of pop culture references so you can tell this book was written recently. If that doesn't bother you, I would definitely give this a try.

DNF at 62%. This is such a sweet book and I loved it. But at 60%, the last of the potential tension is taken away and there’s no where for the book to go.

This was a lovely book and these two were great. They get into a marriage of convenience but also, discuss letting it be something more. He needs a green card and she needs a safe place. They provide that for each other and more.

I have a feeling that the last 40% of this book will be like an extended epilogue and I am not sufficiently interested. The only thing they haven’t done yet is declare their love, but it’s pretty obvious both of them adore the other.

Now I’ll read the reviews and see if I missed anything. But I feel perfectly satisfied where I’ve stopped.

This was a certifiably good time! How could you not love a marriage of convenience with a nutty FMC and a lonely 400 year old billionaire monster? I loved both MCs and I adored their meet cute. Lucy is 93% me, and I'm debating how best to sue for personality plagiarism.
Exhibit A: Severe case of loud verbal diarrhea without a filter and complete inability to control facial expressions. Check.
Exhibit B: Weirdo obsessed with pop culture and snorts when laughing. Check.
Exhibit C: "Viktor...listened to her hour-long dissertation on why The Rise of Skywalker was the worst misogynistic piece of crap ever made and how it nearly destroyed her enjoyment of the entire series." Check.
Exhibit D: Four words. Fleece. Star Wars. Bathrobe. Yeah, I have a fleece Jedi robe. What of it?

The beginning of the book was paced perfectly. But once we got past that 50% mark, it felt too rushed. And our villain, Branka, was a bit OTT. Then again, I don't believe in good and evil. Everyone's a shade of grey. (Which probably goes a long way to explaining my taste in media.)

If you like feisty (but thoughtful) FMCs and MMCs who are Cinnamon Rolls on the inside, "Who did this to you!?" on the outside, this book is for you. Bonus: a touch of praise kink. "She’d never known how much she wanted to be a good girl until that moment." 😉

This was cute. I haven't read a Frankenstein monster book before and was slightly disappointed that he was still "ruggedly handsome" - I was sort of expecting a more monstrous appearance. It's pretty much insta love, fun and fluffy for the most part. External conflict which I prefer, but it did all seem to be wrapped up very easily and I would have enjoyed a bit more plot.

Dnf @ 46%
Theres no plot. 46% in and i cannot tell u where this is going. Hes rich and works all day but somehow i know jackshit of what he does. She apparently LOVES reading and freelances all day but somehow i cannot name a single book shes read so far or a single task shes done while freelancing for his business. its like every piece of her personality is a static fact to make her seem more interesting. Her only personality is being horny and cringy “humour” which is a shame cuz i was looking forward to a tall curvy girl being saved by a monster :/

I dont even know how to review this bc, theres nothing fucking happening.

The one star is cuz i like gothic mansions. Not that i was told much about what this one looks like. Bc nothing fucking happens. I also like the monster. Ive always had a lowkey crush on Frankenstein.

Review: Monster Match by Isabel Jordan is an intriguingly unique romance novel that has a marriage of convenience between a human woman & a “monster” man that has been through more than anyone should.

This might be too much for a book review, but there’s a historic connotation between disability & villainous roles, like the monster. I am both disabled & scarred, so I find myself relating heavily to the monster of this story, Viktor, even though he is not actually a villain. I adored Viktor & his beautiful heart. The horrors of history & the ways to which society have treated him haven’t dulled his golden heart & you will see it sparkle throughout & proceed to swoon thereafter.

This book was also surprisingly spicy & I felt like I was intruding on their honeymoon. Insert blush here. It had some of my favorite things including a sassy heroine, witty banter, rescue dogs & a respectful yet loyal & lets-her-fight-her-own-battles-but-has-her-back-when-necessary hero!

The action-packed climax of the book happened rather quickly & in turn, wrapped itself up just as fast. While I liked how everything turned out, I actually wanted it to drag on a bit more.

Overall, I thought this was a super interesting romance book & it was a lovely read. I’m always grateful for when my fellow scarred main characters get the happy endings they deserve.

Massive thanks to Isabel Jordan & Elle Woods PR for the arc, which I voluntarily read & reviewed. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Trigger warnings: This book mentions &/or contains violence, fire, murder, kidnapping & drugging of animal (mini-spoiler: the dog is okay!).

Halloween may be over but readers will find this book the perfect treat as apparent opposites find a sweet and sensual connection that kept me glued to the pages with its unique and unforgettable storyline. With its modern-day take on the Frankenstein legend, Ms. Jordan grabbed reader's attention from the very first page to the last through witty banter and a charming romance that warmed my heart.

Viktor Adamovic isn't your parent's Frankenstein monster. He might've been put together one piece at a time but beneath his polished exterior lies the real monster...a protective and commanding beast whose scenes with Lucy West were combustible. It makes them a compelling pair, a formidable pair, who come together to wage war against the people and events of his past in a relationship that might've started out as a marriage of convenience but soon became all too real and meaningful to them both.

On a whole this was a quick read, one that sucked me in from the very start. It's a cleverly crafted tale that beautifully balanced a sweet and sexy romance with pain from the past. It fueled so many different emotions in me too...warming my heart one moment, then making me blush, before leaving me with a smile on my face the next. Readers looking for a unique romance, one that breaks the mold, will definitely want to add this book to their shelf while hoping that Ms. Jordan breaks more storytelling molds in the future!

Monster mash, er, match

Lucy has hit her limit for bad luck. Jobless, dumped, kicked out by said former boyfriend for catching him cheating. So, here she is at this monster speed dating event trying to score a free meal and maybe a peek at the infamous mansion. But she overhears a comment and responds, which draws the attention of the host. She had no clue her comment would lead to a marriage proposal!

Spoilers ahead.
This was sweet, fluffy and over the top hilariously goofy. Viktor is a monster reminiscent of Frankenstein's creation. But he's a marshmallow centered cinnamon roll. Lucy has no filter, a quick wit and a mouth that gets her into trouble. They're darn near saccharine together. Trigger warnings for a very brief gory scene and mentions of his past. He was abused, groomed, and part of him came from someone's father - the same person who abused him. Which slides a little close to the ick factor. All other parts of the book were sweet and fluffy. I kind of hope this becomes the first of a series, nore monsters finding mates. Because there were some awesome side characters I'd like to see again.

Oh man, Viktor was a sweetheart. Sure, he's technically a monster, but he's a far sight better than Lucy's ex. I mean, the big guy is ALL ABOUT her. All about. He likes her mind and her quick wit and how she isn't willing to use people to get what she wants.

Considering how he'd been used and abused in the past by his creator, that last one is BIG.

On Lucy's end, she doesn't have a problem with Viktor's designation as a monster. She likes him in all the ways a lady can like a man, the fact he was created rather than born isn't a deal breaker for her. The guy also has stamina. Lucy REALLY appreciates that.

A chance meeting, a whole lot of rescue pups, a marriage of convenience (of sorts) which turns into a whole lot more, and a blast from the past that is very unwelcome. I liked Viktor. I liked Lucy. I liked their growing pack of pups. GOOD STUFF.

Monster Mash by Bobby Picket was playing every time I went back to the title.

This was cute and I liked the realistic speech/talking. It looses a star, because if your house has keep out signs and you are on acreage, have cameras and cars in the garage and limos willy nilly, and you're rich rich, how is someone just walking into your property?

Lucy+Viktor meet in an alcove, at his ginormous house, where he is hosting a speed dating event. They hit it off. Decide to enter the mutual beneficial marriage contract, then really date/be friends after the marriage, face a foe, have the sex and relatively live happily ever after.

I enjoyed reading it. It wasn't too heavy nor too light/obnoxiously funny.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I was expecting a very light hearted and probably silly plot line with speed dating. I got a marriage of convenience with a MMC that was possessive in a protective way BUT openly acknowledged the FMCs right to make any decision she felt was right. I openly laughed at several points in the book, especially when the MMC said ridiculously possessive things and got his ass handed to him in response.
I loved that the FMC was curvy and confident about how good she looked most of the time. Her previous emotionally abusive relationship damaged her self image, but she still knew she was hot AF somewhere inside her.
The only thing that kept this from 5 stars was that the finale seemed really rushed. It needed more pages filled with the drama of the moment to do it justice.

I didn't know I needed a hot Frankenstein's monster in my life until I read this book, y'all. Now I know...

Plot overview: Lucy meets Viktor, a hot reanimated dead guy, at a Monster Match speed dating event, and he proposes a marriage of convenience.

I've read quit a bit of monster romance lately, and I've enjoyed it. I've read about demons, moth men, minotaurs, dragons, vampires, barbarians, headless horsemen, apocalypse horsemen, and more. But one thing I'd never read about was a hot Frankenstein's monster getting his happily ever after. Until now.

I guess technically this could be considered a gothic romance since we are talking about a Frankenstein's monster who lives in an old Victorian mansion. But the content of the book and the couple's romance is so freakin' sweet that I have trouble classifying it as gothic romance. It's more of a lightly gothic contemporary fantasy romance, I think.

The hero, Viktor, is my favorite kind of romance novel hero EVER. He's hot, tormented, and protective--all while being caring, communicative, and highly attuned to the heroine's needs/wants/desires. He's a cinnamon roll hero in an alpha male hero's body, and I adore him.

Lucy is an awesome heroine, too. She's smart, funny, snarky, and most of all, not afraid to take help when offered. Never does she turn down help to her own detriment. I hate it when romance heroines do that! Like, if the hot man is offering you a place to stay and to fix all your problems and doesn't expect much of anything in return, don't say no out of nothing but stubborn pride!

While I wouldn't necessarily call this a rom com, there were PLENTY of hilarious scenes. There's one towards the end of the book that involves rescue does that had me snort-laughing.

The sexy scenes are pretty great, too. Not over the top, but definitely hot enough to get my attention. Ahem.

So, all in all, if you're a fan of cinnamon roll heroes who LOOK like alpha male heroes, snarky heroines who aren't afraid to go after what (and who they want), and reads with plenty of heat and hilarity, then you'll want to give this book a try. ASAP. :)

This was the first book I read of this author, and it surprised me.

It’s exactly what the blurb advertises it to be. Sweet but spicy. The word ‘but’ is important in distinguishing things. This is a siren call (or TW) that the spice isn’t curtailed for the sake of being a more ‘polite’ book for the more general book-club type audience. If you don’t like spice, don’t read.

It’s always fascinating to me to see some comments of readers who HATE any kind of spice in books, and say it’s just a selling gimmick. Ok, maybe so, but it’s also… what a lot of readers want.

On the other hand, maybe ‘clean’ books of quality aren’t as ubiquitous as one might assume?

The longing and chemistry/tension was well done. It’s written in third person, dual POV, which I now realize is my personal favorite. It makes the ‘snark’ of the fmc not as cringy as I usually find them.

This has a Cinderella aspect along with the Beauty and the Beast component to the story, which is also a high favorite for me. Unrealistic? Yes. And that’s what I read monster romance for.

The antagonist was developed well but was the weakest aspect of the story for me. The story didn’t dwell on the conflict. This is a mostly light read. The science behind the creation of the mmc was not very deeply expanded on. But it’s something I’m willing to overlook if the chemistry and characters are doing it for me.

This is a good palate cleanser book.

I wanted to like this book due to the lack of Frankenstein's Monster type romance out there. I finished the book, by my goodness I couldn't stand the main character. From the way she describes other women, to the way she speaks, and the way she's described. I rooted for her, but it's the way in which she presents herself.

Viktor, as much as I wanted to like him, falls in love at first sight and feels compelled to a woman he just met? The romance is rushed, messily paced and overall just underwhelming. All they can think about it having sex and that doesn't equate to love. We don't get any actual showing of their time together and progression outside of a pocket full of moments between timeskips.

The last 15 pages consist of a Blanka plot shoved in. Which gets resolved with very little challenge or mulling over. It's just overall messy.

This book sat on my tbr shelf for awhile and as happens with a lot of books I don't know why I waited so long to read it. The story was cute and sweet and I loved both mc's (especially Victor). I know if anyone ever reads this review this will not be appreciated but it gave me Bella/Edward vibes. Not the story per se but the characters ( saying she is his life now, the wolf/ vampire things and referring to eating animals instead of humans) but in a good way. Over all I loved everything about the book and expected the ending, though not immediately the who of it, after deciding there couldn't be a third act break up after everything they had already gone through. And I must admit I was very happy to not see the words *then things went...a little sideways*

A monster of a good time!!

In one day, Lucy West lost everything. She lost her job. She found out her boyfriend was cheating on her. Then she lost her home when he kicked her out of their apartment. She didn't really have any friends she could stay with, so she decided that attending the Monster Match speed dating and possibly finding a husband seemed like her only option. She just never thought she would actually find her happy ever after. This book is sweet and steamy and tragic and wholesome. Just another reason to love Isabel Jordan!

This story was billed as a sweet, but spicy romance. Lucy West attends a Monster speed dating event for the free food and a chance to check out the inside of a huge, gothic mansion and maybe forget her problems for a couple of hours. What isn't mentioned, is how humorous the book is in places. I laughed out loud several times. Even though there are some tense, dark moments, the story is also funny. If you like fantasy, happily ever after's, with swings between funny, sweet, and tense, you'll enjoy this story. I loved it!

I downloaded this book because the description sounded amazing. A monster loosely based on Frankenstein’s monster marries a human after she attends a speed dating event for humans and monsters. I loved the characters. Viktor was super sweet and Lucy was tough and quirky without being over the top. Their relationship was so fun to see develop and I hope there will be more in the series. I didn’t even realize until I finished that one of my new favorite authors wrote this. From now on, if I see Isabel Jordan’s name, I’m reading it.

VERY GOOD!

I enjoyed this book. Now Lucy’s language was something else. It switched between admiring antiques and Victorian decor to a potty mouth. Her language sounded like she was a teenager. Lucy is funny and a caring person. Viktor's a good and lonely soul. They make a good and equal partnership. I enjoyed the Star Wars movie discussion. I liked how Lucy acquainted Viktor with music and he preferred heavy metal. I kept waiting for an antagonist and when it showed up boy was I surprised.

I couple of holes: but tiny ones. For example--

“Yes,” he hissed, eyeing Viktor like a cop on Blue Bloods staring down a perp. “Mother, call 911. Clearly she doesn’t belong with this… thing.”
(one page later)
" ...so she glanced up at him as the pearl-clutching old bastard dragged his poor wife into the elevator. "

Author is referring to the same woman connected to the same man two pages apart. Mother -> Wife. The transition was smooth, and weird.

Other than the weird details here or there flaking out, it made me smile. It's real cute, loved it!

Happy reading.

I loved this book from the very beginning! Such a fun concept for a story and delivered in a playful but at times, deathly serious narrative. Both MC's have lived difficult lives but neither is bitter nor totally closed off to all the potential of life in general and in each other specifically. I enjoyed watching them build their relationship through everyday life events and be tested by extraordinary ones. On finishing this book I rushed straight off to buy the next in the series, so this is a definite recommendation.

This was a cute quick read about Lucy a human woman who is down on her luck, and a monster named Viktor. Viktor was created like Frankenstein’s monster, but just so happens to be hot.

I liked that after Lucy and Viktor get married she sticks up for him to people and sees him for who he is and not just someone who can do things for her. Their attraction to one another was sweet as well. This was low angst with a little bit of external conflict at the end.

No third act breakup
