The Charming Winter

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Tracy Krimmer comes a darling romantic comedy about healing and how the past can shape the future.

Grocery store manager Holly James can oversee an entire staff in her sleep. But when it comes to her love life, she’s a muddled mess. After finally ending a contentious marriage that left her swimming in debt and living back at home with her parents, the last thing she needs to deal with is a romantic relationship.

But then a letter comes. Not only is Levi Walsh back in town, but he has a message and a gift for Holly. The special charm necklace isn’t from him, though. It’s from his sister–Holly’s former best friend who passed away from cancer as a child.

One charm is missing from the necklace, and Holly is on a mission to find it. Levi is more than happy to help. Having more fun than she has had in a long time, Holly remembers that while the past may be painful, there are happy memories, too. When sparks fly with Levi, she wonders if her feelings are real, or is she trying to hold onto her past?

The Charming Winter is the third book in the Rewind series, perfect for romance, 90s loving readers. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone.

The Charming Winter is the long-awaited third novel in Tracy Krimmer's Rewind series. While it can be read as a standalone, it contains spoilers for the first two novels.

I enjoyed this novel for all the eighties and nineties nostalgia, the friendships, and the romance. It's a short, but sweet, story and it makes me even more thankful for how long my best friend (since sixth grade) has been in my life. (It also made me glad for spring weather and not having to shovel snow or fall on ice.) Holly is an interesting character whom I found relatable in some ways. I also enjoyed seeing her friends again and I can't wait for Dani's story to come next. Levi sounds amazing and definitely crush-worthy. Tracy also did a great job writing villainous characters, as she usually does, and I got really angry at the ones in this story!

Tracy does a good job exploring grief in this novel and I appreciate that.

My only concern is that the length of the story led to quick turnarounds after conflicts came up. There wasn't much time for the conflict to really brew before something else resolved it.

Overall, another great novel from Tracy Krimmer that I hope you will check out soon!

Movie casting suggestions (some are from her previous books in the series):
Holly: April Bowlby
Vivienne: Jessica Capshaw
Sadie: Emily Perkins
Scottie: Wyatt Oleff
Crystal: Tara Reid

There were a lot of things about this book that I really enjoyed. For one, the 90s nostalgia was entirely on point. From what I understand, it's a big theme of the the Rewind series. The Charming Winter is book 3 in the series, but can easily be read as a standalone. (I can attest to this as I have yet to dive into the other books in the series.)

Secondly, Krimmer is just fantastic with her characters. Even though there were a few moments where Holly drove me a bit nuts (she's not the best communicator at times) she, along with the rest of the cast feel like real people. I'd almost swear that Krimmer was writing about her best friends, she seems to know them so well.

I also really loved the setting of this one. Not only was there a lot that felt down-to-earth in both Holly and Levi's jobs, but I think Krimmer captured the feelings of being an adult living back with their parents well and there were moments where I felt like I right there with the characters. I could imagine the drudgery of dealing with less than stellar employee you can't do much about, and I felt like I knew exactly what Holly's parent's kitchen felt like as she sat there, trying to get her parents to give her space to deal with her own things. And, of course, the fact that it takes place in winter adds to both the cozy feelings and helps you commiserate with the "ugh, I have to deal with the snow" type feelings.

For me, the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star read was the pacing. This story is short and quick, which has it's perks, but I found myself wishing there was more. I wanted to be more emotionally invested in the characters and, in some instances, I felt like I wasn't feeling the entire impact of some of the more emotional scenes. I wanted more flashbacks of Holly and Amy so that I better understood how strong their bond was, more backstory between Holly and her ex, Owen, so that her sympathy for him had more context, and - of course - more interactions between Holly and Levi when they were younger to see bits of that relationship developing (because they are super cute together!)

If it's not evident by this being my forth positive review of Krimmer's works, I think she is a great addition to the romance writer/book community. She brings a voice and stories that seem to feature Gen-X characters finding love and navigating life when they're past that early-to-mid 20s point of discovering who they are, which is something I really appreciate. Her characters are always seem to be people with lives and baggage who are relatable and lovable - people who might have their flaws but always find they are worth the love around them. I continue to look forward to jumping into more of Krimmer's books and checking out the stories in the rest of the Rewind series.

A quick thank you to Tracy Krimmer for sending me an Advanced Reader Copy of this novel, The Charming Winter. I am voluntarily writing this honest review.

Having read the other two books in the Rewind series, it was nice to reconnect with Holly. I recall her contentious marriage as well as the debt she accumulated after the fallout from that, but this time, the reader is given a more in-depth account of what went down between Holly and her ex, Owen. Her experience really aids in how she feels about romantic relationships in general, which is why she seems emotionally distanced from Levi after he re-enters her life.

I appreciated the special connection between Holly and Levi, but I really loved the backstory that involves Amy, Levi’s sister. I don’t think there are enough stories out there that focus on close friendships, the kind that develop during our most formative years and really shape us as adults. Unfortunately, it is a friendship that has been severed too soon due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, but the flashbacks were excellent and really balanced out the wall that Holly builds up with Levi. We see her vulnerable and with emotion, despite the tougher exterior she likes to portray to those around her.

The use of the charm was an interesting concept, one that drives the plot forward. I like that it’s more about what the charm represents and not so much about the charm at all, a totem to Holly’s past relationships and to what may lie in store for her with her future relationships, too. Out of all three books within this series, The Charming Winter is my favorite!

I really enjoyed this book! Although it is part of a series it can be read as a standalone. This heartwarming books is very cozy and just overall a cute romance read. I really related to the characters and felt like I was experiencing Holly’s struggles right beside her. I loved Levi and would’ve loved more flashbacks of them at a younger age to really see what their bond was like and how it has progressed. The story was written really well and I will definitely be checking out the other books in this series!
