Friday Night Lies

Rate this book
His name starts with a H. So does happiness. Heartbreak. Home. Hoops. All things I associate with him.

Ever since my family moved in across the street when we were both kids, Holden Adams has been that guy. My first crush. My former confidante. My best friend’s brother. He’s the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

I love him.

I hate him.

One of those is a lie.

I’m just…not sure which.

“I gave you my heart a long time ago. You don't have to believe me. I won't blame you if you don't forgive me. You can punish me. Ignore me. Hate me. But no matter what, it will always be yours.”

Friday Night Lies is C.W. Farnsworth's newest standalone and follows Cassia and Holden. Cassia is friends with Holden and has had a crush on him since her family moved across the street… Until it all fell apart in 8th grade. Now in their senior year, they still ignore each other, but Cassia's best friend is none other than Holden's younger sister. They spend every Friday night together at their place, and that's when her relationship with Holden will forever change.

I discovered C.W. Farnsworth and read several of her books this year, and I instantly liked her style, so I was excited to start Cassia and Holden's story. I had a great time reading it because it had some of my favorite tropes. I don't read as many high school romances as I used to, but this one was very realistic, and I was immediately immersed in Cassia and Holden's journey.

I liked Cassia a lot! She is still pretty much affected by her fall off with Holden and doesn't understand why he stopped talking and hanging with her. She has the biggest crush on him, so she gets a little shy and awkward when they are in the same room, but she also doesn't take shit from him! Cassia was honest with Holden, and when he acted like a jerk, she wasn't afraid to call him on it, which I loved!

As for Holden, it took me several chapters to warm up to him, as I didn't really understand the reasons why he abandoned Cassia. But throughout the story, you can see that he truly cares about her. He has a hard time showing it and thinks she deserves better than him. Holden also hides a lot behind his popularity and doesn't have much confidence in himself. He is a very stubborn man, but I ended up liking him a lot. I loved his nickname for Cassia and the fact that he wrote a journal about everything he wanted to tell over the years.

Cassia and Holden's relationship development was so good and seemed very natural! They were very cute together with their secret nightly meetings. They also cared so much about each other, and I loved how they supported and showed each other that they were worth it. The friendship between Cassia and Holden's sister Sydney was also a nice addition to the story, and I loved how caring he was with her!

Overall, I enjoyed Friday Night Lies a lot! It was a sweet and easy read. Cassia and Holden were great characters, and their relationship was well-developed. I can't wait to read more C.W. Farnsworth's books!

So! Much! Toxicity!!! Wow!

Let's talk about it.

*spoilers ahead* stop reading now if you don't want to be spoiled.

The Characters: I did not care for anyone. Actually, I liked Sydney and Harrison. Personally, I couldn't stand Holden. He was incredibly toxic and I KNOW he has childhood trauma with his parents. Send this kid to therapy!! And then Cassia... stand up, girl. STAND. UP. Give her a couple years and she'll be over Holden, I know it. I did not care for Holden and Cassia pleasantly surprised me a couple times, but girl. GIRL. He is just a guy!!

The Plot: What a mess of a plot. Like best friends to strangers to friends with benefits to lovers. This entire book was a big miscommunication trope. And I was not here for it, thank you very much! I'm disappointed.

Okay, but one of the CRINGIEST parts was when Holden apologize to Cassia over the school intercom? BRUH. Absolutely not.

The Book Cover/Art: Get this scary boy off the cover! Jump scare!

Was not fun. 2/10.

This book didn’t do anything for me. It felt like it was a wattpad read and the characters were really undeveloped. Difficult to get through and unfulfilling

I was gifted this ARC by C.W. Farnsworth, and I am so grateful! This was an excellent read!

This book made my One Tree Hill loving heart so happy! I loved the basketball sports romance. Lately there are so many hockey and football romances floating around, that this basketball romance was so refreshing. I thought that the author captured high school romance so perfectly. I love the best friend's brother trope with the added bonus of friends to enemies to lovers thrown in. I thought the miscommunication between Holden and Cassia was super realistic for the high school age romance since that is a time when insecurities are at an all time high as young adults really learn what they want and explore their feelings. The events that led to the third act break up felt really realistic too. It wasn't just thrown in there for dramatic effect or to keep the story going. It was there because it was an event that would really lead to a break up and hurt between a couple.

If you are a fan of open door, high school sports romance, then this book is a must read!

The style of this story is understated and unique.
It’s a butterfly inducing best friends brother romance.
The main characters Cassia and Holden had also been best friends as younger kids and for reasons unknown to Cassia, Holden ghosted her and cut her out of his life….Until as high school senior’s things heat up between them and things get exciting.
I love young/first romance so much and her excitement of finally feeling seen by the boy from across the street is so satisfying.
I love their stolen moments together and the emotions and chemistry are fantastic.
It’s not a fast paced or overly dramatic story despite it being an emotional story.
I enjoyed the moderate teen angst and the excitement of firsts. The mildly forbidden aspect is great and I loved the exhilarating feeling of them sneaking around to be together.
I liked all of the characters. The writing style is interesting, I understood the characters and was rooting for them, though I didn’t deeply connect to them. I still love the characters and story. I enjoyed it very much.
For a romance about high school seniors it’s low drama with the perfect amount of angst for me.
There is a shocking twist towards the end that’s very emotional and changes the characters lives. It really surprised me, it was very emotional.
I love the story and the characters journey. I appreciate this author’s writing style, it’s something unique and I enjoy the quiet emotional experience her books give me.

2.5⭐️ rounded up to 3 because GR needs 1/2⭐️ ratings y’all.

I just felt sad for most of this book. Holden treated her like crap. I’d like a heroine who decides feelings, they sometimes lie, and I deserve better. Just wanting Holden to be her first didn’t make me feel better about the NYC trip.

But the crap he said in front of everyone when he was drunk? Peace. Out. She shoulda picked Harrison.

My only highlight for the entire book is a quote of Harrison’s, who apparently is the only one who knows his worth.

“Something wry and knowing twists Harrison’s expression. “I wish I could be your rebound guy, Cassia. But I like you too much. You’re my first choice, and I’ll always be your second.” “

Based on the ending, maybe this is the first in a duet about Cassia and Holden. I actually don’t think they survive college. But who knows. If they get another book, maybe I’ll read it and find out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

2nd read: audio listen to get ready for Tuesday night truths in December!! I forgot that this little HS romance had so much spice Charlotte girl lmao I missed holden and cassia - I can’t wait for book 2!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Charlotte literally never fails - it’s so funny I found her on tik tok for kiss now lie later and I have loved her ever since. She is my automatic read author. She is the queen of sports romance and I was pumped when she did basketball because I don’t see enough basketball romance. Did I mention childhood friends turned enemies, best friends brother, good girl/bad boy. It’s giving one tree hill vibes. I love Holden and Cassia so much! The locker room scene… sheeeshhhhhh. These two are toxic and I love it. It was so emotional and I ate it up. I am so excited for book two!! Thank you for the ARC, Charlotte 🖤
I’ve liked the two books I’ve read of fansworth but this book was boring. A FMC that all she cared about was if the guy wanted her around and genuinely liked her and if he wanted to be with her. Who cares girl ?? He hasn’t spoken to you in years and he obviously has other stuff going on.
Cassie had absolutely no emotional for anything. Anything sexual almost came off as a transaction with how they interacted after was awkward. Neither of them seem to even want to try to make a relationship and it made it difficult to have a liking to them.
I don’t want to read the next part because I know it’s going to equally dumb with no emotions and a weak female and a confused little boy.
Este libro me ha encantado y me ha tenido chillando todo el rato, aunque tengo que reconocer que no es de los mejores de la autora. Es una novela súper adictiva y spicy que se lee en un suspiro. Sino hubiera sido porque la he leído en lectura conjunta, me hubiese durado nada. La historia de Cassia y Holden me ha parecido muy cuqui. Ellos se conocen desde que eran pequeños y siempre han sentido algo por el otro, pero ciertas cosas hicieron que se distanciaran. La verdad que me encantan los libros donde los protagonistas se conocen de pequeños porque la conexión entre ellos suele ser brutal. Desde el primer momento la tensión que había entre ellos es súper fuerte y cuando explota todo es 🥵🥵🥵 CASSIA me ha gustado mucho y me ha parecido un personaje súper entrañable. Ella es súper mona, es muy dada a los demás y es un amor de chica (justo lo que Holden se merece). Por otro lado, con HOLDEN no he conseguido empatizar tanto porque al principio no entendía el motivo del porque hacía ciertas cosas. Si es verdad que al final he acabado entendiéndolo, pero me ha faltado un poco más de profundidad del personajes. También, el final me ha parecido demasiado precipitado para mi gusto. Creo que los acontecimientos del final son muy graves y para mí se soluciona de una forma bastante sencilla. Me ha faltado una conversación profunda entre Cassia y Holden, donde él se abriera por completo sobre todo lo que le preocupa. En fin, este libro me ha encantado, los personajes tienen una química brutal y las escenas spicy están escritas muy bien, pero me ha faltado ciertas cosas.
