Sydney, the sailboat instructor for Camp Hunt, just had his new sailboat, The Silver Moon, unjustly confiscated by Bear Lake's Harbormaster. Sydney calls the police for help only to find that his boat has disappeared entirely. So he does what any normal sixteen-year-old would do: He finds it and steals it back. Along the way he rescues Mandy from the Harbormaster's henchmen. Now, Sydney and Mandy are finding out why the Harbormaster has a reputation for being evil…as they run for their lives.
As the author's wife there is a very slight possibility I'm biased, but very slight. I read this one summer when working at camp so the setting was perfect. Even though that reading was years ago I can still remember the characters and their various close calls. The action was fun and quick-paced. The twists and turns were well thought out and this book would be a great addition to any boy scout's library. Having said all that, if I could change one thing about the book it would have been the title; I kind of think "November Rain" is a good title.
Fantastic read. Marty throws you into a world of sailing, one that I had never experienced before. A mix of espionage, comedy, and action, The Evil Harbormaster is a book that any age group will appreciate and enjoy.
I really enjoyed this book. There was just enough suspense, but not too much mystery (like, I don't know what's going on--mystery). I have to say I'm intrigued by the incident in the final chapter and would love to discuss it further...but don't want to spoil for the rest of you readers out there. Also, being familiar with the setting, I was especially fascinated with how Marty saw suspense, and intrigue in places that I only saw in practicality...or even barely noticed (e.g. the hidden cavern at the Marina). I'm happy to see that my sojourn down swan creek in an inner-tube is now immortalized for the world...
This book is creative, imaginative, well-written and delightful as I and all my California friends can attest (we all read it in the course of a few weeks). I even made visiting friends read it while they were staying at my house as I didn't want to lose the only advanced copy.
For a first novel. Well done. Can't wait to see what's next.
Every time I look at parts of the book for editing or book promotion, I think, man, I was young when I wrote that ... or ... boy, I would write that differently now, that's a little bit cheesy. But then I get kind of wrapped up in the story and by the time I finish, I sit back and nod and think. Hmmmm. Not bad. I won't promise the same for everyone--obviously I'm going to write something that fits my likes better than others'--but, yeah, I don't think it's that bad. Sweet awesome book. Christian and I fought over this the whole way through. But I came out on top!!! (Maybe because I stay home and do nothing all day while Christian works....hmmmm) Great fun, laugh out loud story with intense ending. Sign me up for the sequel. Marty? A little help?
