With elements of Gothic horror, alchemy, sex magic, and science, Blood Ending chronicles the rise of master vampire Severin, his trinity of female vampires, and the obsessed love-sick alchemist Praetorious Biederbeck. As one century ends and a new one heads towards devastating war they find that the "old ways" are no longer viable—the lure of sex and blood now competes with the lure of science. Assisted by the doomed vampire bride Justine, Biederbeck chases after Severin and the Trinity through the decades. And what a chase it is!
I love a good vampire story and this is a good one. Severin wants to live forever and gets his wish, he is now a master vampire as he has a vampire heart. He is told that he has to create the Trinity. A group of three vampire women and once he has found them he will become all powerful. Severin travels the world looking for his special ladies and immediately settles them in his home. He leaves his ladies and travels abroad accumulating more wealth and titles and Justine his Queen. The trinity is not happy and begin to plan how they are going to destroy this interloper. A real gothic tale, blood soaked, love story. Black magic and so much more. Another MUST READ in this genre and a well deserved five stars. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC
I don't normally read vampire books. I did sit through the TV series True Blood, recommended to me by my wife. We ended binging it, sometimes watching four or five episodes on my days off. Staying awake through the run of this show was not the easiest thing, let me tell you. But when I was done, I knew everything there was to know about vampires. What more, really, is there to know? They drink blood, they come out at night and they live forever. The rest is just debauchery.
Turns out, quite a bit.
So I picked up Blood Ending by Michael McGovern, also recommended to me, and was pleasantly surprised. It turns out that a good story and good characters make a difference, even in genre fiction. The story is about a vampire named Severin who, when he's turned, receives a vampire heart which gives him power over other vampires. He must create a "trinity" of female vamps who serve him. The four of them pick off humans at an alarming rate. Eternity, however, goes awry when Severin brings home a wife from a business trip. There is also a wizard named Praetorious who makes a deal with the devil and pursues the quartet over time and history.
The author does a good job of showing how vampires adapt through the years or, rather, how the changing times affect vampires. The bombing of Dresden plays a role so central in this book it's almost a character itself.
This was an entertaining read. It sinks its fangs into you from the first page. A star off for a technical matter involving the tense in which the story is told.
Severin’s dominance in the book speaks a lot about his character in how he wants do dominate as he creates a Trinity of vampire women. The plot is all you can ask for in a vampire story, and it has interesting twists as Severin explores the world to expand his wealth and unsatious quest for power. It’s an interesting side of the story, and you’ll want to know whether it will cost Severin his power, and how the Trinity he built reacted to it. Praetorius is also a threat to Severin’s empire, and the author does brilliantly to mix them all in together to create such a fast-paced and action-filled vampire story. Prepare for some horror scenes, which is almost normal in most vampire stories, as what else makes it more intriguing? The author builds up the characters exceptionally, and its what you need as a reader to understand the story, and immerse yourself into it. The history within the book is amazing, and it’s detailed oriented to explain the changes of time. If you read many vampire stories, you’ll probaby know at this point that they don’t age, and have to adapt to the changing dynamics in the world.
All the super natural beings in this tale had fillings of love and hate. You could fill there concern for each other. Don't get me wrong they were evil but in a way caring. I loved this book and I couldn't wait to finish and see how it ended.
Just like the title suggests, it is about vampires and all that comes with them. It is one hell of a roller coaster. The lives of Severin (Anton) and Praetorious get intertwined because of the beautiful but eccentric Clarimonde, at a school of black magic. Both of them are brilliant and ambitious. Add powerful and unique female characters like Clarimonde, Justine, Magda, and Anastasia to this mix and you get a captivating story.
McGovern does a great job of bringing the reader into this world of vampires and alchemy. One of my favorite parts of this book is how the magic and the 'bloody' elements mix with real historical events. There are some grotesque scenes, but it never goes into detail. However, they are still there. Also, another thing I liked is how the author takes his time to introduce the characters and develop the story.
Blood Ending might feel predictable because of the vampire theme but it is not. It is the perfect book if you want to read something dark, daring, and well-written.
Interesting and unique take on the vampire legends, and the abilities of necromancers. Definitely kept me guessing along the way, and offered new thoughts and takes on a genre/creature that has been written a million ways to Sunday.
Blood Ending by Michael McGovern is a vampire novel set in the 19th and 20th centuries. It chronicles the life of the vampire Severin and his nemesis, the alchemist Praetorius. The first part of the book focuses on Severin's creation of his Trinity of three female vampires and their life in his family's ancient castle. After a few years, Severin goes traveling and meets Justine, a young French woman who becomes his vampire bride. How will the Trinity react to the new bride? And will Praetorius succeed in destroying Severin and the other vampires?
The novel is action-packed and fast-paced throughout. There are a lot of historically accurate details that make the story even more intriguing. Some of the scenes that involved killing children and animals were a bit brutal for my taste. However, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to fans of horror and those who love a good vampire story.
What started off to be a delightful take on vampires in its first few pages, quickly descended into an obscene, protracted tale. We all know vampires can’t die easily yet these ones continued to be resurrected through convenient magic every damn time. We also know they’re by no means innocent, and I have no problem with this concept of vampires who indulge and become immoral over time. It makes sense. But this just went waaaaay too far for me. The sexual torture and bizarre incestuous like relationships were just too freaking much.
