I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Revell’s FOOD PRESERVATION FOR PREPPERS is a compact book. With just 109 pages, the author dissects food preservation. Most books will offer readers a multitude of different recipes, but the author instead gives people what they really need; the nuts and bolts of preservation. This was pure genius on Revell’s part because many, if not most, preppers already have the recipes or create their own. Instead, the author gave people what they needed; factual knowledge on how to preserve food and avoid spoilage.
The book is filled with tips - 99 official tips to be exact and numerous other why-didn’t-I-think-of-that? tips. For example, I would have never considered using panty hose to store onions! As a farmer, I’ve used various preservation methods. Over the years, I’ve accumulated an untold number of canning recipe books. And while most of them give basic canning procedures, none have delved deeply into *why* foods spoil.
This is a really useful book. It definitely doesn’t rehash what other prepper books have already done. By offering readers a new angle on food preservation, I believe that Revell’s book will find its way onto many bookshelves.

I have been looking into food preservation for a few months now that I have the space for a garden and all I can say is I wish I would have found this book first. After borrowing and buying close to a dozen or more books, this one by far encompasses everything you need to know. Along with telling you HOW to do things, it also tells you WHY to do things. This by far is the best way for me to learn something. I also appreciate the recap at the end of the chapters. It makes a great quick refresh guide if you need to reference something. I really appreciate the pickle issue section because now I know what to do to make mine more crunchy. Great Read! Highly Recommended!
I just began preserving food this year. A lot of what I did was by trial and error. This book would have made my journey so much easier! It is very thorough. I also appreciate that, while encouraging sticking to official guidelines, the author does hint that it's your kitchen, your rules. I highly recommend this book to newbies and those thinking about food preservation but are intimated by it all.
I received this as an ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Very scientific explanations but in plain English for those that don’t understand how to preserve foods in all the different variations. There was a few tips that I hadn’t heard of before and I’m a pretty seasoned preserver. Nice refresh on every chapter to get the main points reviewed. Nice references for those that want to further following or looking at any of them
Great guide for beginners and handy reference for pros
I've been a simple canner / preserver for 40+ years. Having all this information in a one handy volume is great. I usually only make jams and pickles but now I feel as if I should branch out into more preserving. The writing is specific and leads you through each process.
This book is very well organized, like the author herself. It has nearly 100 tips to keep yourself organized as the reader begins or proceeds along their food preservation journey. Very well written and packed full of very useful information.
This book is perfect for anyone prepping for whatever issue. This gave so much information on canning, dehydrating and freezing. It really is overwhelming with how amazing this book is! You're going to get all the information you need to perfect the talents to keep you and your family safe!
I received a free copy of Food Preservation for Preppers: How to Master Canning, Dehydrating & Freezing with 99 Simple Tips to Prep for the Future in exchange for an honest review. Admittedly, when I downloaded the book, I expected it to supply recipes, tips and ideas I would never have considered. It is made clear in the introduction, however, that this is not a recipe book - “there are plenty of those out there”. Instead, this book is intended to “show you how to save time, reduce stress, and be able to enjoy harvest season…”.
Although not what I had originally thought the book would be about, it was worth a read. There were many tips that I felt were obvious, such as using lemon juice to prevent fruit from browning or having your ingredients ready before you start, but they were still good reminders and often added extra information (such as the ratio of lemon juice to water one should use).
The book also contained some tips that I did not know and was happy to learn, such as the best time to harvest fruits and vegetables, or how to crisp cucumbers before pickling. I loved when the author provided lists to reference, such as which foods are best for canning or dehydrating or which foods can be frozen without blanching.
Some of the tips I disagreed with. The author writes about cleaning out the freezer and throwing away anything you can’t identify. I would at least let it thaw and try and identify and use it. Unless it has gone bad, I’m not going to throw away perfectly good food just because I can’t remember if it’s beans or peas I froze!
Each chapter concludes in a summary of “Essential Points”. Since the chapters are already so short, I found the summaries to be unnecessary and even a bit of a nuisance. I ended up skipping most of them.
In the end, I am glad I read this book as there were some useful tips, and I will likely review it again before harvest season this year. It’s a quick but worthwhile read!
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher. The book tells you how and why to preserve food. There are no recipes, it is a how-to book. If you are new to food preservation, this is a good book.
Great book for any Prepper gives clear instructions how to can, dehydrate and freeze in a safe manner. Full of useful tips written on a friendly way. Absolutely loved it
