Susan Edsall had me in the palm of her hand. She is a magnificent story teller and gifted writer who tells a deeply personal tale about the ten years she spent under the spell of the Evangelical Christian Church. I especially love her humor. She doesn't use it to disguise the pain, but rather to bring it down to earth. Her characters are clear individuals with distinct voices. I found myself deeply invested in the narrative, rooting for Susan to find her way through and out of her situation.
