I thought this was a fantastic faced past supernatural mystery. I could barely put the book down. I have to be honest, I was expecting to like this as much as I did. I mainly chose it based on the cover, which I thought was really eye catching.
There were aspects of this book that were a bit confusing and at times I needed to double check what was going on. You need to focus in on some parts of this book for it to make complete sense throughout.
I received an Arc of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. My opinions were in no way influenced.
I forgot how good Anomaly was. I had read Hidden Variables recently and enjoyed it but what the author has done with Anomaly is incredible. It really get you thinking about life and our roll in the universe. As much as there's (easy to understand) science in it the philosophical aspects are so good. I love Kyle so much I feel for him. I think many will recognise the struggle he has with parent's expectations of him. Another Path works so well as two connected books in the series. I look forward to the next book in the series! Worthy 5 star!
Sophia and her family can see people's futures and their souls. People's souls will change colors with their emotions and can be affected by positive and negative energy. For hundreds of years, her family has been seeing visions of Kyle and Alice. This couple is to make a wondrous discovery in technology that will change the world, if they do not, it could destroy it.
This book is a compilation of the author's first two novellas. It introduces the characters and sets up the world of soul seeing. The first half is about Sophia growing up with her gift and the second half is about Kyle. Both sections deal heavily with loss and grief resulting in a more somber story than I had expected, but its execution was well done. The storyline is very conversation-driven and we learn most everything from character interaction, which caused some of the dialog to feel forced and sometimes info-dumpy. I am curious to see where this story is going as this book just scratched the surface.
I love the changes to Anomaly and Hidden Variables which I've read before. Another Path is the two books together but with extras like (central character) Sophia Leto's science notes, which are easy to understand and get you thinking. I love the modern take on a science-based afterlife, it's explained so well. I can see why this has provoked discussion on Reddit in the past. Now I've refreshed my head on the first two books in the series I look forward to the next book (Lost Frequencies) which I've already pre-ordered.
