Absolute Herschel Walker’s mental health battle raises questions about his senate ambition with the Republican Party.
Herschel Walker is a former NFL running back known for his speed and agility. He played college football at the University of Georgia, where he earned All-American honors in 1982 and 1983. He went on to play professional football in the USFL and NFL, including stints with the New Jersey Generals and Dallas Cowboys.
Herschel Walker is one of the most decorated athletes in American sports history. He's a four-time Super Bowl winner (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988), including MVP honors in 1985. He also won two Heisman Trophies (1982 & 1983).
But it wasn't all about fame for Walker—he spent much of his career working as an analyst for ESPN during their college football coverage. He was also a pro wrestler for a short period before retiring from football in 1995 at age 35 due to knee injury concerns.
But he's perhaps best known for his political career. Walker ran for governor of Georgia in 1994 but lost the election to Zell Miller. He went on to run for senator from Georgia in 2006 and 2014 but failed both times to get elected.
In 2008, Walker was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder after getting into a fight with his wife at home. He has since been open about his mental health struggles, including depression and anxiety; he has written about them extensively on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram and in books.
