He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James.
He is best known for his novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between émigré Americans, the English, and continental Europeans, such as The Portrait of a Lady. His later works, such as The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl were increasingly experimental. James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man, and eventually settled in England, becoming a British citizen in 1915, a year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916. Jorge Luis Borges said "I have visited some literatures of East and West; I have compiled an encyclopedic compendium of fantastic literature; I have translated Kafka, Melville, and Bloy; I know of no stranger work than that of Henry James."

¿Me habré convertido en fan de Henry James? Posiblemente. Casi toda la narrativa corta que he tenido oportunidad de leer me ha parecido de gran calidad. En esta nueva reseña, comentaré una nouvelle llamada "Eugene Pickering", cuyo personaje principal no es una de esas fascinantes mujeres de tan sugestiva construcción a las que el autor nos tiene acostumbrados, sino un simpático muchacho en edad casadera, con no menos interesante psicología.
Eugene vivió muchos años bajo el yugo de una educación asfixiante y sobreprotectora. Su padre trató hasta el extremo del ridículo, de protegerlo de las malas influencias del exterior. Pero, al morir éste, el joven Pickering verá abierta la posibilidad de conocer el mundo por su cuenta. Para ello, se encontrará con su antagonista Anastasia Blumenthal, una mujer desenvuelta, con gran inteligencia, encanto y cultura, que le llevará al encuentro de aquellas situaciones y emociones que le fueron negadas durante tanto tiempo. Para nuestro protagonista, todo es nuevo, inquietante y tentador. No obstante, esta repentina apertura le significará un fuerte encontronazo. En pocas palabras, Eugene conocerá la la vida de golpe y porrazo.
Recordemos que leer a Henry James significa que el narrador será un personaje que forma parte de la historia y que puede narrar los acontecimientos bajo su propio de vista. En esta novela, el encargado de contarnos las venturas y desventuras de Eugene será un viejo amigo de la niñez, quien conoce a fondo su personalidad y tratará de llevarlo por el camino que cree más conveniente. De modo que, el narrador nos hace partícipes de sus dudas y temores sobre Eugene y a su vez, los lectores experimentaremos dudas sobre la veracidad del narrador.
Este juego literario es lo que hace tan interesantes las historias de James; pues además de provocar la tensión por medio de las incidencias de la trama, el escritor crea una incertidumbre adicional en la que el lector se pregunta ¿Cúal de los personajes tendrá el punto de vista correcto? Por si fuera poco, la historia muestra una gran sensibilidad para posicionar los sentimientos en el alma de cada personaje; todo parece tan real, tan verosímil, tan reconocible que resulta muy sencillo identificarse.
No sé si "Eugene Pickering" sea la mejor novela corta de James -posiblemente no- pero me ha resultado muy empática y agradable. Me permite consolidar mi percepción de que el autor norteamericano fue un excelente escritor de cuentos y novelas cortas. ¿Soy fan de Henry James? Absolutamente.

Historia de corta de un hombre que siempre ha vivido dominado por un padre autoritario pero que a la muerte de este no sabe si seguir sus mandatos o vivir su propia vida. Me ha gustado tanto la historia como los personajes pero no ha conseguido engancharme por completo.

very nice short book. I begin to love the way H.J thinks and the way he address Americans and Europeans. Surely there are so many differences between these two places, but it is very precise to feel it from James'.
