About the author

Garrett Putman Serviss was an American astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer. He majored in science at Cornell and in 1876 joined the staff of the The New York Sun newspaper, working as a journalist until 1892. Serviss showed a talent for explaining scientific details in a way that made them clear to the ordinary reader, leading Andrew Carnegie to invite him to deliver The Urania Lectures in 1894 on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related matters. Serviss toured the United States for over two years delivering these lectures. He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column devoted to astronomy and other sciences.

Eight of his books are devoted to astronomy. He also wrote six works of fiction in his lifetime, all of which would today be classified as science fiction.

I had never heard of Serviss before. I’m shocked! I had no idea how important he was to science fiction. I listed to this on audiobook and I really enjoyed it. The story was full of interesting elements: science, politics, and adventure. I loved Andrew Hall! Such a great character!

Astronomer and journalist Serviss' second SF book, a novella, came on the heels of the successful "Edison's Conquest of Mars" (1898).

Heavily influenced by Jules Verne's more satirical novels, "The Moon Metal" is set in a near future, when huge gold deposits in Antarctica has sent the global economy into tailspin. A mysterious scientist called Dr. Syx introduces a wholly new metal, said to come from his heavily guarded mines in the Rockies, and offers a group of bankers to supply the world with this new "gold standard" through them. Two entrepid scientists set out to infiltrate the mine, and soon discover that the metal is, in fact, brought down from the moon via a matter transmitter.

I read this book a while back, and to be honest, don't remember much about it, other than the fact that I found it rather dry in comparison to some of Serviss' other novels, with a somewhat wobbly dramatic arc. As the mystery of the book is revealed in its title, it's one of those books that frustrates the impatient reader by having the heroes trying to catch up with the reader. Still, the idea of a matter transmitter was quite novel for the time.

I own a butt-ugly 1st World Library pocket edition from 2005.

Another will written fantasy Sci-Fi futuristic world 🌎 adventure thriller short story by Garrett P. Serviss about the discovery of gold or is it? People get rich and others go broke. What is this metal that has changed the world 🌎. I would recommend this novella to readers of fantasy novels 👍. Enjoy the adventure of novels 👍🔰 and books 📚. 2022 ⏰😤😮

I liked this book a lot. A bit heavy on scientific explanations, at times, that kinda went over my head. This didn’t impede my enjoyment however, it’s fun to wonder about how the moon metal comes to be and see the worlds reaction to this metal.

It was slow

Like I wrote, it was slow and very little action. I hoped to read a thrilling experience and I got more textbooks than a fast pace penny novel.

Clunky descriptions; aside from doctor Syx, there is nothing that would differentiate one character from another; no relationships between characters; where are women?

Interesting early science fiction story, still showing the influence of Wells and Verne. A mad scientist offers to help rescue the world's economy with a valuable metal that he claims to be mining but is actually bringing from the moon. Still an entertaining read.
