The Reckless Damned #3

Deal With the Devil

Rate this book
When you make a deal with a devil, you must prepare to face the consequences…

Mori

I’ve loved and lost once before, and it nearly destroyed me.

One might think I’d be scared to try again, but since discovering the existence of fated mates, I’ve waited on tenterhooks for mine to appear.

Fate, apparently, is content to keep me in suspense.

When a nervous human brokers a deal to find his brother, I can’t refuse. My tracking days are over, but there’s something about River that makes me want to get back in the game. Besides, it’ll be a good distraction from waiting for my dream guy.

It quickly becomes clear that River isn’t all he seems. And even worse…I can’t deny the attraction between us. But can I go there when I can’t promise River forever?

River

I’ve always been a liar…but this might be the most dangerous lie I’ve ever told.

Making a deal with a son of Lucifer to track my brother is a bad idea. Especially since he currently holds the number one spot on Mori’s hit list.

I’m asking for trouble.

But I’m out of options. Blaise’s death creeps closer every day, and despite his past misdeeds, I have to save him. Even if it means pretending to be a human, when I’m anything but.

The more time Mori and I spend together, the harder it is to hide my true identity. How can I when he’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a partner?

There’s no point dreaming of a future with Mori. Even if he forgives my deception, he has a fated mate out there somewhere.

And it isn’t me.

Deal With the Devil is an exhilarating, forced-proximity M/M paranormal romance with a HEA and no cliff-hanger. It is the third book in The Reckless Damned series, which is best enjoyed in order due to the overarching plot. Each book focuses on a different couple and will have a HEA.

CW: references to off page domestic abuse and anxiety attacks. Includes references to torture, murder. One scene of homophbia, including the use of a homophobic slur.

is there crack in this series?
i feel like i’m addicted.
as usual, this is a biased review because as soon as a man growls my brain stops working and my vagina goes “let’s fucking goooooo”. so yeah. don’t mind me.

river is a manipulative bitch and i love him. i think that’s all i need to say. he’s more demon than the demons. the banter?? the chemistry?? wow.
mori is a grump that grumps very hard but he’s also super soft and he has a romantic heart. also known as my kryptonite.
these two had so much chemistry that they could sell it.

i think i might forgive blaise? i am shocked because i nurture my grudges and i keep them for life, but apparently whatever drug is in this series makes me a better person. that’s good i guess.

was the epilogue a hint for future projects? please tell me it is even if you don’t know thank you!!!
i am going crazy thinking about the next book. i literally need it right now. some people will go feral and i. cant. wait.

Holy crap. Um wow. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I finished it. I daydream about it. I fall asleep thinking about it. My thoughts are split between what went down in this book, and what I think will happen in the next book. This author drives me insane in the best way. I loved this book. As of now, this is my favorite book in the series.

This is the story of Mori and River. River makes a deal with Mori so that he will help find his brother, but everything isn’t as simple as that. He’s hiding quite a lot. I’m not going to say much because I want you to have that “ooooooh dang” moment when you find out like I did, but you better prepare yourself. Things are going to get wild. These particular issues come to head pretty early on in the book, but the fallout lasts for a while. You better believe there is groveling.

I loved Mori. This sweet, sweet man. I know in all the previous books he was the big grumpy demon, but you find out so much about him. The hurt he’s dealt with. His need for love and companionship. I wanted to give him a hug. And River? What a fun dude. He almost reminds me of Harlow with how crazy this man is. You honestly can’t expect what he’s going to do, and that’s just what our Mori needed in his life. Ugh I loved them. I’m going to have to re-read this when I get done with the review.

As always, this author delivered on the spice. It was very good and very dirty. I don’t expect less from her. She always writes the best scenes.

We get more of the Dagon and Dimitri dynamic in this book, but oh my god. She really threw me for a loop this time. She added some more details to the mix. I could be completely wrong since she didn’t outright say it, but I have some ideas of how the next book is going to go down and I am so ready for it. That next book is going to be a doozy, let me tell you. The epilogue is especially frustrating because while she gives you what you want out of a HEA, she also puts glimpses of future characters HEAs in there, but no details!!!! It’s driving me bonkers. That probably doesn’t make any sense, but when you read it you’ll see what I mean. She did the equivalent of dangling a mouse in front of a cat, and when it reached for it, she pulled it away. You see what I mean when I said she’s driving me insane? But I love her for it.

I loved this book, and I am so so so excited for the next few books. I’m looking forward to what her mind comes up with.

Unfortunately, this was my least favorite in the series so far.

Did I enjoy it at times? Yeah. Did it grab my attention at times, especially near the end? Yeah. Did I like the characters even if I didn't exactly love them? Yeah.

But that's just the problem. I only enjoyed it at times. It only had my attention at times. I liked Mori and River together and apart, but I didn't love them.

This was just...middle of the road for me.

It was slow. I had a hard time getting through it. It was way too long, in my opinion. This shouldn't have been and didn't need to be almost 400 pages.

(And, this has no bearing on my rating, but frankly, the cover is badly photoshopped and it's very apparent. It's just so bad that I have to mention it.)

I mean, take away the contrived drama around Mori's 180 and this would go down by at least 100 pages, and it'd still be a sizable novel. Around somewhere under 300 pages. That's all this story needed.

Take away the unnecessary drama between these two, and the outside forces cause enough drama.

Instead this spent way too long on Mori all the sudden resisting his bond to River for way too long and contradicting how he thought before for the obvious sake of drama, and keeping these two apart for longer because of ~reasons. To make the story longer? Idk.

But this was slow going for me. I mean, I had work as well so that did cut into some of it. But also, I've had work for months and when I'm into a book, I can get through it in a fairly timely manner anyway. It doesn't take me about a week to finish each book.

Sooo, without work, maybe I'd have finished this in about 4 or so days. But even then, that's too long. I just wanted to be taking frequent brakes.

At times, it wasn't holding my attention. Mori and River didn't have amazing, off the charts chemistry for me. So even the parts focusing on building their relationship weren't holding my attention as they should have.

At times, they did. At times, I was into this. At times, I was reading this at a steady pace. But then I'd just hit points where it lagged for me. Their chemistry just wasn't enough to hold my attention through the lack of them doing much of anything in between the interesting plot parts that picked up the story for me.

The sex, at times, was hot. I especially liked when River blew Mori in public (but because Mori could conceal them and all with his powers, people didn't actually see them) and people walked by not 6 feet away having no idea what was happening 6 feet away from them.

But then, other times, the sex scenes just felt like another thing making this story go on too long. Especially near the end. I even kinda skipped over the last two or so sex scenes these two had near the end because after the climax of the story, which did hold my attention, I was just ready for this story to finally be done, and it just kept going and I was kinda bored again.

Then this whole thing with Lucky, who will obviously be this random human at the last second thrown into Dagon and Dimitri's love story, and I was checked out.

Near the end, especially, it was devoting too much time to setting up the next story, which I'm not interested anymore now that it'll be an MMM book. It's just not my thing. But even if it wasn't going to be an MMM book, I'd still have been annoyed because instead of subtly setting up the next couple/book and still focusing largely on our main couple of this book, by the time the resolution came around, it was mostly just set up for the next book with River and Mori as almost background characters now.

I don't like that. It's like the main characters become secondary characters in their own novel. Like...do the set up in their novel, not this one? Because then I became even more detached from Mori and River at the end because it wasn't even about them anymore. That's when I skipped their sex scene because the story was done already and it wasn't needed. It was just prolonging the end of the story at that point.

So...yeah, this wasn't my favorite. It still had a good foundation, it still had parts that I liked and enjoyed. The climax of the story did keep me engaged and I read it fairly quickly too.

But the rest? Was just kind of "meh." It wasn't badly written, it was just...kinda boring at times. It didn't piss me off, it just...didn't engage me like other parts.

So, 3 stars from me. It kept me engaged at times, and I liked our MC's, and enjoyed them at times, and the sex at times.

But it was just too slow at times for me, too long, with too much unnecessary things added to pad this story for unknown reasons to me.

So...unfortunately, this series kind goes out on a "meh" note for me. I still enjoy this author and will read more of her works. But as the next book in this series is MMM, I won't be reading. I'll read new stuff by her in the future, though.

This one just, overall, wasn't a win for me 🤷‍♀️😕

My ratings for The Reckless Damned Series:

🔆 Devil's Mark: 4 Stars (my review)
🔆 Devil May Care: 4.5 Stars (my review)

Deal With The Devil is filled with the perfect amount of laugh-out-loud, 'holy shit what did just happen', swoon-worthy, heart-touching, and hot as hell steamy moments. I mean... we have the grumpy demon after all, you can bet the heat will be next level!

Deal With the Devil is the third book in The Reckless Damned series. Every book follows the story of one of the four princes of Hell who decide to go against their father and leave Hell. In the process, they find their mates, fall in love, fight and protect that love, and give all of their heart. Every book is unique on its own. And with every one of them, we get on a wild journey filled with so many emotions that sometimes it's hard to put them into words.

Now, my review will be a long one, (Yep, if you know me, you know I love to write long reviews for my favorite books) so I will divide it into parts.

1. ✨ Highlights: ✨
😈 fated mates
💛 demon/mage
😈 false identity
💛 grumpy demon
😈 cocky, wild, and destructive mage
💛 possessive, protective, jealous MCs
😈 bantering
💛 forced proximity
😈 interesting plot that flows naturally
💛 amazing writing
🥵 HOT smut with surprising kink
💛 codependency (let's be real, I would 100% be too if I had someone like Mori or River)
😈 unexpected things that will make your jaw drop

2. The plot:

Deal With the Devil follows the story of Mori. The grumpy, hot as Hell (I mean look at the cover), tempting brother. Or let me just use River’s description for Mori:
“his six foot three, tattooed, square-jawed, looks-like-he-walked-out-of-my-wet-dreams”

One night a shy guy walks into Mori’s bar and wants to strike a deal with the devil. River, our mysterious guy, needs Mori to help him find his brother who disappeared months ago. There's a catch though... if Mori finds out the truth about who River truly is he would never agree. That's why River hides his true identity. He pretends to be someone, something he isn't.

“Now, do we have a deal?” … Blaise was fading by the hour, and I needed Mori to help me find him. “Deal.”

Let me tease you a bit here. You can NEVER imagine what kind of role this deal will play. It's freaking brilliant how Lark used it in the story. My jaw dropped and I cried right then (and before you ask: yes, you need tissues)

When the deal is made Mori and River embark on a journey in search of River's brother. A journey filled with glances, desire pouring through every page, touching moments, and then some action-packed situations. River being River can't hold his mouth shut so you can expect him to blurt things like this one:

“What’s in the middle?”
Unable to look at him, I busied myself with my own doughnut. “Cream.”
“Cream?”
Don’t say it, River. Don’t say it. “You strike me as a guy who likes having cream in his mouth.”
Fuck. You said it.

But that's only a small part of the story. This book is a wild ride.

What happens when Mori finds out his fated mate is River? And more... what happens when he finds out that his fated mate is not the sweet-gentle-need-protection-mate he thought it would be? Because River... oh my, you're in for a wild ride with him. He is a force on his own to be reckoned with. One you will fall in love with. Get ready to hand your heart to him, because there's no going back. Or as Mori described him:

He was like his namesake, a wild waterway that couldn’t be controlled or sheltered. He made his way through the world, carving the path he wanted to follow and not letting anyone stop him. You just had to jump into his current and hold on tight.

The search for River's brother is just a small part of the book. I won't talk about what happens after for now. But in a few days after the release, I will add a part in which I will discuss in more detail the other parts of the book.

3. The love Mori and River have:
Holy shit!!! These two will wrap their hands around your heart, squeeze it, then stomp all over it with all the pain, then bring it back to life, make it beat quicker, excited and so much more.

Mori used to be deeply in love in the past with a human (Eric). Eric died a long time ago, but Mori still carries the guilt, pain, and loss. The moment he learned he has a fated mate somewhere out there in the world he decided to wait for him. That's all he wants, someone to love, to belong to, to protect and take care and someone to belong to him. But things are never so easy now, don't they? What happens when you're afraid to love? What happens when you're afraid you will lose the person you love with all of your heart? Well, in this case, River storms into your life and heart, like a raging storm, ready to claim what's his. Add to the mix some much-needed groveling, challenging, fighting for dominance, and you have the perfect, beautiful couple these two are.

River and Mori came a long way from the beginning of the book to the finale. It's a wild ride. Everything just flows and feels so natural, and you can't stop reading. When together these two are freaking wild, explosive, bantering half the time, challenging each other, loving each other like no other, and the sex is just as wild with some surprises you will love. *cough* HOT, HOT, HOT

4. The side characters:
I will start by saying... I CRIED at some scenes with the brothers and their mates. Some of these tears were from laughing so hard, others were because Lark apparently decided 'hey, why not break my readers' hearts a little bit more? HERE'. I balled my eyes at one scene with Oscar. But at the same time, I freaking loved it. Why? Because Oscar and Cal are my favorite couple EVER and that scene was so powerful, so heartbreaking, so touching, so real, and much more.

I loved how we got to see the brothers interacting in the same way. Loved seeing the strong bond they have with each other. How they are ALWAYS there for each other.
And you will have the time of your life when you read the interactions between the mates! And between River and Harlow (that combination is something dangerous!!!)

5. The next book:
HOLY MOLY, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! I never expected what happened. Lark reviews a lot about the next book here in Deal With the Devil. And I absolutely adored every part of it. I'm so ready for the next book. It will be epic, wild, heartbreaking, and on fire with them!!!

6. Some other favorite quotes:

You can relax. There’s more chance of Mori waltzing into Hell and announcing he’s taking over Daddy’s role than of him hurting River.”

Touch him again, and next time, I’ll drain your blood before making you choke on it.” Harlow clapped his hands, looking bizarrely pleased about the whole situation. “Aw, Mori! You’ve got yourself a protective one. He’s so cute.”

“Did you just rip my clothes off? Again?”

He was my rock, and I could weather any storm with him anchoring me.

“I’ve got you. We’ve got each other.”

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

Was it bad of me to like a bit of jealousy? To want to drive Mori so out of his mind that he’d go all caveman and stake his claim on me? If that made me bad, I never wanted to be good. I wanted to be owned. Possessed.

Damn, this one really had everything and I hecking loved all of it. It was a little sad, had some solid angst, good groveling, super sexy with physical wrestling as foreplay, external action, etc. Just the full package. River is a snarky power-bottom mage who knows exactly what he wants. He's a little reckless, a lot powerful, and he wants Mori. Mori is the silent and stoic type, a thick lumberjack-y redhead who is deathly afraid of putting his heart on the line again after losing his partner many decades before.

They are both flawed and it takes them a moment to figure out their dynamic, to really *accept* it, but once they do it's just fireworks. They rile each other up and love to fight for domination in bed, which usually leads to River having trouble sitting down the next day, but that's exactly how he likes it.

It was just 100% entertaining and hot, but also set up future books. Can't wait to get to know Lucky and find out what the huyck is going on with Dimitri and Dagon.

After fussing over the cat for an obscene amount of time, River stalked back into the room and plopped onto my lap. “Oof,” I said. “Stop throwing yourself on me like you’re a twink. You’re literally the same size as me.”

Cue more guilt. With the amount I now had laying on my shoulders, you’d be forgiven for assuming I was Catholic.

I scanned the selection with my lips pursed. What would Lucifer’s grumpy and utterly fuckable son like in his mouth? Aside from my dick, of course. I mean, he didn’t want it now, but give me time.

“Tasting, you say?” Mori’s tongue flicked over his lips. “Yes. Straddle my face. Sit on me. Suffocate me. Let me bury my tongue deep inside you while you ride my mouth.”

Original review:
This one really worked for me too! I loved the chemistry between Mori and River and the forbidden aspect added to it for me. The drama with the ghasts and the insurrection in hell was entertaining. But Mori and River? Adorable. Whatever is happening with Dagon and Dimitri? Here for it. The new bartender and the drama he brings? All about it. Very excited for the next book!

This series just continues to astound and grab me. I love every character, couple, and all their interactions together so so much. You definitely should read this series in order, even though each book focuses on one of the brothers, there is an overall story and so much overlap in character interaction, I would not recommend just jumping into this story first.

Mori has been waiting and hoping that fate would grant him a mate, his fated match and love. He's seen two of his brothers find their person, and he's hoping that he might find the one for him. WHen he discovers that it's River who is his mate (who is twins with the person who killed Bailey in the previous book) that does make things a bit tricky lol.

These two together are fire. I love how they rev each other up, how they challenge each other, how swoony they are together, and how they compliment each other so well. They're both very protective and territorial over the other - very "touch him and you die" vibes - as are all of the brothers with their mates, really. I love it!

I also love all of the brothers, their mates, and how they interact with each other. They really are one big family. I also love the new characters. And I love Oscar and Bailey with the mates chat LOL.

This book also sets up the fourth book SO SO WELL EEEEEEEEEE haha, that's me and my inability to be calm about the 4th book for the last brother, Dagon. AHH I won't say anything to spoil it, but I like - kinda saw it coming? But also didn't lol. (You'll understand when you read it, trust me.)

Lark Taylor was one of my top debut authors and books from 2022, and I think this series is going to continue to be a top favorite in 2023 as well. I CANNOT wait for the 4th book!!

Get on board with this series! If you're a fan of demons, wings, fated mates, seriously hot protective mates who unconditionally love their mates and want the best for them, then you need to read this series!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

“Someone told me recently that there wasn’t much point in breaking away from Hell if we continued to behave like the demons we once were."

“But that doesn’t mean we can’t make room in our hearts for someone else”.

Wow! This book was absolutely amazing and is my new favourite of the series. Mori and River were incredible and their story was entertaining and beautiful from page 1! I absolutely recommend reading this series in order to understand and better appreciate what’s happening.

I loved how this book started out in the past for Mori. He has been looking for his mate forever and finding out what happened to him was heartbreaking considering he had to watch his two brothers find their mates in the prior books. Sometimes I was so mad at him for the choices he made but thankfully he figured out really quick when he was being an idiot!!

River was a freaking badass and can hold his own with these demons. There is no better match (obviously, fated mates duh) than River for Mori. I loved how they challenged each other! And the way River fit in with this family of demons and mates was amazing! I loved seeing how they eventually welcomed River in!

Another thing I absolutely love about this book is how unpredictable it was. There were so many twists and turns and a lot of the time I had no idea what was going to happen. It’s so much fun to just go along for the ride and hope for the best.

Also I really liked how each book in this series is so different regarding how the demons meet their mates and how their relationship progresses. I am so incredibly excited to read book 4 and see Dagon’s story!

“I’d track you down, not resting until I found you. Marked or not, there’d be no corner of Earth where they could hide you from me. And they’d pay with their blood, a drop spilt for every minute they kept you from me.”

Yep. Yep. Yep. This was my favorite book in the series!
I recommend going and reading my reviews on the other books in this as well because man did I just plow right through them.

Book 1 - Devil's Mark : review here

Book 2 - Devil May Care : review here

Book 3 - Deal With the Devil : this review

Book 4 - Luck of the Devil : review here

I loved Mori. He gave up grumpy vibes in the last book but we learn so much about him in this one and it explains why he is the way he is. River is perfect for him, even though he doesn’t see that right away. River reminds me a lot of Harlow with how absolutely feral he can be. It’s genuinely so fun and hilarious!

These two had a lot going against them, and I won’t say anything else about that since I don’t want to spoil anything for you.
But expect angst, pining, and all the spice. God these two were hot once they got together.

I just loved everything about it and it just makes me giggly and not able to write a coherent review, but ignore that and just go read it!

LOVED THIS!!!!

The only fault I can pick out is that the relationship felt too sudden to me, the way the were fighting and then the next page it was all lovey dovey. But I guess that's to be expected from a fated mates trope ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now I can't wait for it to be May! The groundwork for the next book has left me drooling!!

This book was a great addition to this series. My heart has always gone out to Mori, who has been in so much pain after having suffered the loss of the man he loved, but who ultimately wasn’t his mate. His previous relationship was handled so beautifully in here, while not diminishing the central romance at all. Mori and River were evenly matched, while still being protective and possessive of the other. The plot is a natural progression from the previous books, and continues to open up more possibilities. Speaking of which, I know some readers are unhappy with where the fourth book is headed, but I’m honestly all in with it. In fact, I’m more excited for that book than any other in this series. I anticipate an epic conclusion, both narratively and romantically, and I can’t wait for it to come out.

This had some really nice moments and was easy to read but it felt like a copy and paste of the rest of the series with the way things progress both in the relationship and the plot. I found it repetitive and dragging, although River does have some pretty cool mage powers. I think if this had new ideas, was snappier and not stretched out to almost 400 pages it could have been so much better.

some much needed banter

I’m loving this series but this has definitely been my favorite so far. The banter between River and Mori was 👌🏽. We also got a little more action in this book which I am all for. Can’t wait to read the next book.

So far this series has been such a win for me and I've loved each new approach to the fated mates trope. Of all the brothers, I wanted Mori to find his mate the most. I wouldn't go so far as to call him a romantic, but he had been in love before and craved the feelings of being needed and loved that he lost when his previous partner died. In his head he had constructed an idea of what his mate would be like based on the person he had loved before. Imagine his surprise when River showed up instead.

The initial interactions between Mori and River and the situation that put them into forced proximity were so much fun. I loved how River couldn't control his snark around Mori and had to keep reigning it in each time he slipped. His not-so-subtle machinations to get Mori's attention made me laugh several times, too. It would have been really easy for Mori to look naive when it came to River, but the author did a great job preventing that from happening.

If there is one truly flattering thing that I can say about these books, it's that I have a really good time reading them. The demon sons of Lucifer are badass, but their mates aren't shrinking violets who cower behind them and wait to be saved. They all have a role to play in this ever growing and changing family and I'm excited by the idea that each of them will have a chance to step up in some way as things come to a head in the finale.

Speaking of the finale,

This isn't really a knock against this book specifically, but I think it makes sense that I keep spending more and more time away from fated mates books in between reads (though I may counteract that with this last book, who knows) because it's boring to immediately jump to being in love and devoted to each other, it's too simple. Thankfully, the series arc plot held enough interest to keep it engaging. I say this as someone who usually hates lies in relationships, but I kind of wish the deception had taken another 50-70 pages or so to be exposed. River was definitely the kind of MC I wanted the most for this series, we had two in a row that were the more docile needed to be protected nurturer characters, and this one needed to be one that would keep the demon on their toes and add to the group in other ways, and River definitely fit the bill. I found Mori to be incredibly one-note, so much more so than Cal or Harlow in their books. This review sounds so negative and I absolutely did have a good time and I'm excited for the last book to resolve the overthrowing Hell plot, but I'm unclear if I'm going to be continuing in Lark's world after that. If I do, it's going to be quite the slow roll, I don't know that I have another ten fated mates books in me (at least the instalovey immediately addicted to each other way she writes them).

Always

Knock knock, but does it matter who’s there because orange you glad River met Mori? I am!!! Even if you’re like me and you wanted to yell at them both, for…reasons, I wanted to squeeze them tight, more.

“F*ck, I didn’t think he could be more perfect. But the sound of my name on his lips like a sinful prayer?
That was a form of worship I could get behind.”

Gah, I love everything about these two. From River’s temperament, which I so wish I could share my favorite scene because it’s so perfectly River, but alas, demon’s got my tongue. To the freaking hot chemistry he and Mori have, like whew, they have me all tied up. To the emotions that both Mori and River dragged me through, at times screaming, and at times cheering, but always, always with all of my love for them. If it wasn’t official before, and it was, I am now 1000% ready to do whatever I have to never let this amazing family go. Plus, I need more nosy demons and their mates, and with that ending, I’m rubbing my hands in glee for what’s yet to come, and I hope it does many, many times.

My favorite so far, but the title won't last long since I saw that Dima and Dagon's book will be MMM. But I loved the development of this book more than the other books in the series.

Can't wait to read the next!

I really liked Moir in the other books, but from the blurb, I had a feeling this one would give me some anxiety, so I skimmed it.
Moir has been hung up on "the love of his life, Eric." He didn't mark him, so he's dead asf. Like 60 years dead n gone. Finally, Moir finds his mate, River, pushes him away. Straight says, "My heart is taken, I'll never love you."
lying sack of shit. Being mated is all you talked about in the other books....
How could you?
No thanks. I'm too sensitive.

I'm going to skim the next one, too. I'm Hella pissed yall added another mate for Dagon and Dimitri 🙄 they had the most chemistry / back story.

A good combo of Enjoy & Emotions. The stakes are high, loving the lore!
A MM Paranormal romance b/w Demon & Mage — 2 powerful beings, a last chance at love & plenty of banter! Loved Mori & River, devoured this in 9hrs (over 2days).

Mori is 2nd oldest of the "(former) Princes of Hell" demon brothers. Had loved, lost, hopes. Love these bros 😍! I liked the insight on their breaking off from hell, on Eric. M owns a nightclub (& a kitty!), is tattooed, grumpy, broody, caring & possessive, sassy with River.
River is a water mage masquerading as Human, so Mori will make a deal & help track R's twin Blaise (Yes, the same one from last book who I wanted tortured, I guess I'm satisfied). Pretended as docile to manipulate & lie, but is Powerful, snarky, fun, oddly sweet.

They're such a perfect match, even if they don't realise it at start (*R's glamour). The banter, the tension 🤭, the road/rescue trip! When the truth's set free, the fated mate bond known, can their wrong start turn into more? M's fear 🥺, R's win plan 😏, Rejection 😔, Grovel 🤭, finally cuteness 🥰. Their relationship is evenly matched, It's sweet, deep, flirty, kinky (ropes 😜). Loved their fights for dominance & delicious give ins. R's a total power bottom!

The action 😈 is thrilling, the ghasts, the surprise wolf pack, attacks & info on Armageddon. WTF. The guys gotta get ready for the finale! That Climax had me so WORRIED 🤯 that Lark was gonna pull a Bailey (who's so forgiving here 🥰😭) like last book on River but whew! I'm so glad for the Deal with the Devil ☺️. Loved the ending, especially the epilogue - Yay!
Omg, the prophecy! So, so excited for Dagon's story!!

Story ratings: (Enjoyed 5+/5)

POV: 1st person, Dual POV
1) The Characters & relationships: 5/5
2) The feels: 😲😞🤨🙂😋😜😤🥺😗🤐☺️😍🥰🤤😶🤕👿😻😘
3) Story & world: 4.8/5
4) Sexy/Steamy scenes: 3.5/5
5) Levels: Mild Angst, so Cute, Highish Mild Dark (Paranormal killing/torture stuff, 1 slur scene)

The reckless dammed book 3. I recommend reading from the start because all these men are amazing.

Another great book in the series!! I think this is my favourite, but I think that might change with book 4 😉

Mori is the sweet but grumpy brother! He just wants to be left in peace to wallow in his pain of believing he has had his true love, his Eric who passed away without his mark, he’s not destined to have a mate. Then in walks a human???Something feels strange he can’t put his finger on it, but some how he’s been talked into helping him track down his missing brother. Who is this man who is driving him insane!!!

River and his twin are mages, but his twin is an idiot who has caused problems with the demons who want him dead, but he has been taken and his powers are being drained. River now has to make a deal with a devil to find him and keep him safe. Easier said than done!! But using his power to pretend to be human will work right?? If not he’ll just use his charm!!

This is another brilliant book full of snark and sarcasm and lots of British slang!! Poor Mori had no chance with River! He’s a persistent little shit! He defiantly met his match inside and outside of the bedroom!! But you can’t fault the chemistry between them! I loved seeing two dominant, possessive men take turns in protecting each other.
This family is in for a treat when you put River and Harlow in the same room, them two are gonna be a handful and I want an invite to that party!!

I’m so ready for book 4 it’s been set up so well and I literally can’t wait!!

River is 152-year-old mage. He's very powerful. He is the twin brother of Blaise who accidentally temporary on alive a key character in another book in this series. Lucifer's sons hate Blaise and wanted to end him, but he was kidnapped by ghasts first. River seeks out Mori who is known for being a very good tracker, he comes disguised as a human with a glamor. He makes a deal with Mori. He has to keep his identity a secret because he's afraid no one will help him once they know who he is and who he's trying to rescue.

Mori loved a human back in the mid 1900s but that human wasn't his mate and he died of natural causes. Mori wants love back in his life, he's eager to find his mate. He doesn't realize at first that River is his mate. But when s*** hits the fan, River gets outed. This isn't as easy as Mori thought it was going to be.

I liked River as a character. He was a good guy. I loved how powerful he was, it was fun to see his powers save the day. And I really wanted to see him and Harlow interact more. I liked the plot of this book that was not related to the romance. I love the world that Lark has created and the found family and the vibrant characters. I kind of wish the family had been more up in their business earlier in the book, I think that would have helped a bit.

I didn't love the romance in this book. I felt like they were kind of fast with having a big conflict and then a resolution right after and I love yous. I didn't feel like their connection was very deep, it seemed like they were only really good for each other because they were equals and they were compatible and fate had chosen them to be together. I didn't feel the fondness radiating around this couple like I felt with previous couples in this series. I wasn't happy with how the Eric plot was handled. Eric was Mori's past love that died. Mori was an a****** throwing Eric at River to hurt him, and he didn't grovel enough, River was too forgiving. River was wondering why Mori had such a change of heart, and Mori never shared that Eric spoke to him from heaven. Mori didn't love River ENOUGH for me.

Eric didn't make sense because in Lark's world. The sons of Lucifer are drawn to live in the same town as their mates so that they have opportunities to run into each other. River was 152 years old, he was alive and very much an adult when Eric was around. I just don't understand how Mori's demon let him love Eric so deeply when his mate was around. It would have made so much more sense if River hadn't been alive when Eric was.

Some notable moments:

The tent sharing scene! There was such intimacy in the way they woke up together. "That wasn’t the only thing causing my erection to throb. The other issue was that Mori’s hand was cupping my arse. Under my briefs. Against my skin. I bit back a groan. Dammit, I really didn’t want to wake him. I wanted to lie here as long as possible, revelling in the feel of him touching me, pressing me against him"

"This felt like he was donning a new skin and wearing it with pride. An armour I couldn’t get past, no matter how much I tried. All my questions were met with clipped answers. My barbs with noncommittal responses. My teasing with silence. River wouldn’t play with me. And I…didn’t like it."

Loved the meet the family/interrogation: "My arse had barely hit the sofa before they turned their attention to me. Harlow had warned me that they were all interfering, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the onslaught of questions they flung at me. “How old are you?” “Do you like reading?” “When you said you could drain my blood and make me choke on it, is that something you can teach me?”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

DEAL WITH THE DEVIL was another great addition to this series and I can't wait for book 4! I was excited for Mori's story because he's been the one from the beginning that has wanted to meet his mate and desperately wants someone to love and care for. Of course, River is nothing like he expected and there was a fair bit of ups and downs for Mori and River. I kind of wanted a little less back and forth on their feelings, especially because they were abrupt changes but that's a minor complaint.

Like the previous books, the other brothers and their mates feature prominently in DEAL WITH THE DEVIL and I also loved the addition of Mori's employees Toby and Lucky. With the revelations at the end, I'm even more excited to read Dagon's story.

Content Warning: death of a lover; brief encounter with homophobic person; side character who is being abused

Favorite Quotes:

“What? Do you mean you would’ve kept away from him, knowing he was your mate?”

I grinned as I thought about my hunky lumbersnack. “Oh no, just the opposite. I’d park my arse in his bar every night until he noticed me and made me his.”

- - - - -

“But seriously, if we do this…you’ll never have to doubt my love for you. I’ll spend every day of the rest of eternity trying to make you happy. I can’t promise I’ll always hit that goal, but I can promise I’ll never stop trying.”

- - - - -

Yes, I wanted River for all the big moments in life, but mostly I wanted to experience these small ones with him. The everyday domestic ones, where we were so entrenched in each other’s lives that our love became ordinary. Expected.

But never taken for granted.

- - - - -

“I’m not going to take even a minute with you for granted. But even if shit like this happens again, we’ll find a way through together. You can save me, then I’ll save you. That’s the way it’s going to be with us. You don’t need to carry all the weight. Not anymore.”

Mori has been just waiting for his mate to walk through the doors of his club so he can finally have that great love. When River comes and asks for Mori's help finding his brother, Mori can't seem to say no. This human may not be his mate but there's an undeniable draw. River takes a huge risk deceiving a son of Lucifer, but he's willing to do anything to get his brother back. Even getting close to a demon who can never be his.

Mori and River have a rocky start but there is no denying their connection. River is the opposite of what Mori expected. He challenges him in all the ways that matter and gives the perfect amount to make Mori feel needed. They are so similar but that's what makes them so good together. There was a lot of back and forth with them, Mori being scared of losing his love after losing Eric and River making those initial mistakes. But they never really give up on one another. I also think they're the spiciest couple yet, plenty of hot chemistry between the two.

I really did enjoy this book but I was having a hard reading day when I finished it up. The first half was really interesting but I'm glad that it got settled fast. It got a little slow for me in the middle, but thankfully the ending picked right back up. Having read the first two Damned Connections, I'm living for the Blaise/Toby content before I get to their book! We also finally meet Lucky, which makes me even more intrigued for the final book in this series. He seems like the perfect missing piece for our grumpy angel and demon. I cant say enough how much I love all these characters, I've really enjoyed the series so far and am looking forward to the final book!

Disobeying Satan, their father, made the four brothers leave hell.

Mori couldn’t and won’t kill his lover, he loves him. Only, he couldn’t mark him, he didn’t understand, tried several times, but failed.
Mori had loved and lost, lost him to the one thing he couldn’t give him, immortality.
He knows there’s a fated mate for him somewhere, he’ll wait for him.

River made a deal with the devil, or more precisely, one of his sons, Mori, to track and save his twin brother from the Ghasts (the undead).
He can’t know Blaise accidentally killed the mate of a demon, and certainly can’t know River is a mage with phenomenal powers.
So River acts like he’s a human, vulnerable, in need, and helpless, in reality, he’s the opposite.
Yes, he’s a bad guy for sure, telling lies, lies, lies!

Mori is attracted to River, but when he touches him there’s nothing… confusing it is, so many coincidences.
Even more confusing are the different attitudes River is showing, from feisty to docile. Mori knows the guy is telling lies,

To narrow it down, River yearns for family, bonding, and love. Mori will never give it to him, the demon wants nothing to do with him after all the lies.

Mori, my sweet, deeply scarred Demon, all his doubts and fears, magnified before his eyes.

Hell broke loose! (I said it first before I read it! Lol)

A bond between mates is amazing, it’s forever when one dies the other will too, they feel everything, also when they are tortured!!

Amazing story, the clash of the titans, that’s how it felt.
A super strong written story, every detail of the magic was excellently done, the journey was exciting AF. Every installment of this series is completely different, with a different dynamic between the main characters. I loved them all.
What I also love is that the road to the next story is discretely paved. Can’t wait till May for Dagon his story.
An absolutely thrilling series about four Demon brothers finding their fated mates, they left hell and still have to fight against it.
