I bought "Ready Set Serge" after watching the "Sewing with Nancy" DVD based on this book.

It's a good beginner's serger book. It's project-oriented, and so has less technical info than other serger guides I've read so far.

Some of the projects are just silly (cord covers), and some I won't make because I have no use for them (baby bibs). The techniques are more interesting than the actual projects, especially those which use multiple layers of fabric followed by folding and turning to produce the final result. I was blown away by the topological sophistication of the checkbook cover and sunglasses case demonstrated on the DVD.

Which leads to my big problem with the book - it can be hard to follow the instructions for some of the projects. The layering, folding and turning are intricate for some projects, and often there's not enough photos to compensate for the skimpy instructions. The DVD clearly illustrates how the fabric should be layered and matched, and live-demonstrates the folding and turning steps. The book isn't as clear.

That said, none of the projects in the book are major productions, and once you figure out the steps, no project in here should take more than a half hour to make, including cutting the fabric.

I've wanted a serger for years. This year as a birthday present to myself I bought one! And this book. It's awesome and the projects range from simple to complex and cover the gamut of useful to faniciful. It's well written and the photos and diagrams are clear and very helpful.

I haven't tried any of the projects, but I was hoping for cuter things to make. I did read through some of the projects, and I think it would've been more helpful to have a photo for each step. I did like the idea with making your own wire ribbon, something I wouldn't have known to do with a serger.

A really great book for the serger owner to really learn how to get the most out of his/her machine. In addition to showing you how the serger works, the book also presents numerous patterns for things you can make using the serger. Recommended.

Presents lots of good techniques to use when serging, although many of the projects, themselves, haven't held a ton of interest for me. Worth it to learn the techniques.

Despite a pretty serious error on one of the patterns, I found this book full of useful information about using my serger. I only wish she would write other volumes about using other stitches besides the four thread overlock.
