A king’s downfall and a love that transcends war

Spurned by potential suitors, Miriam travels to Jezreel to care for her cousin’s son. There, the precocious seven-year-old works his way into her heart. When Arameans swarm the land like locusts, Miriam focuses on the safety of her young ward but promises adventures beyond the city walls when the war ends.

Gershon, a quiet and kind vintner, is happily building a life for his wife, son, and aging parents. But when his wife dies during childbirth and war looms on the horizon, he must make a decision—will he take a new wife before his heart can mend?

Meanwhile, Dov, a young officer crosses paths with the “bird girl” he remembers from the past. That she is a beautiful woman matters not, as he is a career soldier. Unexpectedly charged with leading Ahab’s army against the Arameans, Dov anticipates death and defeat in Samaria, but when a prophet pledges victory, Dov vows to fight to the end.

When an unlikely victory brings freedom, a bright future seems imminent. Then one afternoon Miriam witnesses a tragedy and must flee with the boy to keep them both safe. With henchmen on their trail, will they find refuge—and her heart the home she’s longed for?

Dana McNeely dreamed of living in a world teeming with adventure, danger, and romance, but she had a problem—she also needed a lot of peace and quiet. She learned to visit that dream world by stepping into a book. Better yet, hundreds of books. Soon, she began writing her own stories, fact and fiction.

Inspired by the Bible stories of Elijah, Dana wondered why the prophet came to stay with the widow of Zarephath and her son. Who were they? What was their life, before? How did the boy change after he died, saw the other world—and came back?

Those questions led to Dana writing RAIN, in which she built her dream world of adventure, danger, and romance. Peace and quiet, however, have remained elusive.

No stranger to drought, Dana lives in an Arizona oasis with her hubby the constant gardener, two good dogs, an antisocial cat, and migrating butterflies.

Her debut novel RAIN spins the tale of a mysterious prophet, a desperate youth, and a relentless queen. RAIN and a second novel in the "Whispers on the Wind" series are contracted by Mountain Brook Ink.

Elijah's saga continues!

I'm reading an advanced copy of Whirlwind by Dana McNeely. Do yourself a favor and put this on your wish list! Such a great book! It's reminding me of the sweeping adventure of Conilynn Cossette's Cities of Refuge and the palace intrigue of Katrina Hamel's Court of the Tetrarch.
This book was worth the wait!
Dana has woven such a beautiful story. you will not be able to put this book down.
When evil kings (and queens) won’t listen to the word of the Lord, you can expect them to be confronted by God's Holy Spirit. Ahab and Jezebel continue to mock the Lord's commandments and His prophets, and Miriam's quest for a peaceful life is often disrupted.
This book is for you if you like: biblical fiction, Bird watching, Tall and assertive heroines, family ties, ancient war history, Serving god in a hostile environment, and so much more

I’ve never heard this explanation for Elijah’s chariots of fire and I LOVE it.
This book is book 2 in the Whispers on the Wind series, and while you'll be doing yourself a favor if you read Rain, Whirlwind can be read as a standalone.
Can’t wait to read about Elisha next !

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher, but this in no way affected my 5 star review. All thoughts are my own

This is a unique Biblical fiction in terms of what I’ve read. I have always loved the history Bible books so this series touches on my favourite aspects of this sub-genre. It is a masterful look at a dark time in Israel’s history as well as exploring the world of prophets. I loved the reality of turmoil and dissection surrounding the growth of faith in a God who brings fire from the sky. Miriam’s story was wonderful. She had many hardships and struggles but her story was one of faith. Dov was another great perspective as he struggled with how the work for an evil king and serve God. The third perspective was minor just as good. I loved Elijah’s intentional faith as he proactively relied on God. This sequel is just as good as the first. So highly recommend!

I received an arc from the publisher in exchange for a honest review. I will be purchasing a copy as soon as I can. It was that good!

A fresh new voice in Biblical historical fiction! Dana McNeely has such a solid grasp on the history and culture of the times. She has done her research, but that research doesn't bog down the story. Rather it enriches the story and immerses you into it. Vivid writing with fully fleshed out characters. Beautifully imagined and beautifully written!

LOVED:
- The sense of family. I felt so sad for Miriam when she kept talking about how she missed her family, but the love she felt for her new family was admirable
- I usually don't like the war scenes, but the author did a fantastic job detailing the battle events and I could picture each scene so clearly!
- The ending 🥹
- Elijah was such a man of God and I was completely inspired by his heart of complete obedience.
- During the scenes and dialogue of God showing His power, I felt compelled to remind myself of that as well.

LIKED:
- Caleb and Dov's friendship! The scene where Caleb learns to ride a horse made me laugh out loud!
- The eagle scenes. It made me want to start birdwatching lol
- Miriam and Jaedon's friendship was absolutely beautiful

MEH:
- I feel that children are hard to capture accurately and it felt that way with the child character in this one.
- When something tragic happens, I also felt that the reactions of the characters were not altogether realistic and consistent.

I have just finished "Whirlwind" by Dana McNeely, the second in the "Whispers in the Wind" series. (If you have not read "Rain" yet, the first in the series, now would be a great time to do so before this one is released in December. "Rain" tells of the Man of God, Elijah, and introduces the main characters of this Biblical novel. It was also a Christy award finalist.)
I enjoy Biblical fiction because it puts "flesh" on the historical figures, makes these men and women human through their emotions and trials, and expands our knowledge of what is known about the world at that time. When an author uses memorable prose such as, "The sky continued to weep." When her characters quote scripture in times of turmoil and Thanksgiving. When God answers her characters' questions and/or speaks to their musings: "What makes you think I was not there?" This tells me the author has done a great job getting the story across.
We all learn from the historical stories in the Bible, (yes, you can follow along in the Bible while reading the novel). It is good to remind ourselves of them and how God worked in each situation. He is still working today. He is a God of hope.

This book was a bit of a surprise. Dana McNeely was a new author to me. I signed up to be on her launch team because I love biblical fiction. I was immediately and completely drawn into the story. I enjoyed the characters and the story of Elijah. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the characterization of Elijah and listening to him pray. It really challenged me in my prayer life to see God as bigger and pray bigger prayers. I enjoyed the book so much I’m going to go back and read Rain, her first book in the series. I was provided an electronic copy of this book for my honest review.

When our world becomes increasingly less stable and worry creeps in, this is the perfect book to quell all doubts that God is in control.

McNeely continues her spotlight on the life of Elijah, this time relying on events recorded in 1 Kings 20 through to 2 Kings 2. I think what surprised me most was how capably McNeely handled multiple points of view. Although Miriam and Dov have the lion's share of the narrative, I also appreciated hearing from Elijah and an eagle (yes, you read that correctly!) as well as from King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.

One of the main themes is overcoming obstacles, and McNeely uses multiple characters to pursue this thread. One of the more memorable moments was when Dov and an officer are discussing their difficult position of being conscripted into Ahab’s army, when they know that they don’t agree with his tactics or vision for Israel. Rather than risk their integrity, they agree not to “underestimate the power of the Lord.” Elisha, too, struggles to overcome as he now leads the prophets. Despite receiving Elijah’s mantle, there’s resistance to Elisha’s authority. Both men could have let human nature take control…but they didn’t.

Two things that will stay with me for quite some time:
1) “How could any live alongside the Lord’s prophets and still practice the old ways?”
2) The “please show me how” attitude.

I noted the following advice in my reading journal:
1) “Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride. Live by those words each day, and you will finish well.”
2) “Beware of our weakness, watch out for greed, but most of all obey the Lord our God.”

I’m eagerly anticipating book 3, Mantle.

As a huge fan of Dana McNeely’s first book, Rain. I was a little nervous to pick up the second book in her Whispers on the Wind series. When an author’s debut novel is nominated for a Christy award, it’s sometimes tough for the sequel to measure up. I need not have worried! Whirlwind blew me away (pun intended)!

I’ll never read the story of Naboth’s vineyard the same again. Whirlwind gave flesh and bone, heart and soul, to an intricate family tree of Israelites and tied together two families. One was in Samaria, the other in Jezreel. Stellar writing and beautifully layered characters made the many names memorable and various locations distinguishable.

Miriam’s relationships were heartfelt and relatable with her family, Gershon, his young son (Jaedon), and later with those in Elijah’s camp of prophets. I loved the added details about a family of eagles and the training process of one to hunt for the family. Other details about food preparation, clothing, weapons, and war added to the delightful flow of the story, lending authenticity without feeling contrived or encyclopedic.

The pacing was good overall—no sagging middle. Though fight descriptions were well thought out, lengthy battle scenes slowed the story in a couple of places. There were no loose threads. No relationships left untended. This story kept all the subplots spinning and brought all to that spectacular moment—no spoiler for Bible readers—when Elijah the prophet is carried away in a Whirlwind. The event may seem rather dull when you read my words or mysterious when you read it in 2 Kings 2. But I assure you, when you read Dana McNeely’s version of the Whirlwind, Elijah’s farewell in that chariot of fire will leave you breathless.

This book was amazing! I loved the characters and the fascinating historical content. This novel balances battles with a slow burn romance, a lovable child, an intense prophet, and an impressive cast of side characters. Definitely a must read for lovers of biblical fiction!

A whirlwind indicates the power and move of God and is a symbol of heaven touching earth and that certainly describes all that happens in the newest book of Biblical Fiction author Dana McNeely.
Miriam, a young woman who sees herself as a tall, gangly woman who can’t attract a husband, Dov, a soldier in Ahab’s court and army, Gershon, a young father who needs a mother to his young son, wicked King Ahab, wicked Queen Jezebel, and the prophets Elijah and Elisha are only a handful of the fascinating people whom you will meet between the pages of this amazing story. You will take a journey into ancient Samaria, walk among vineyards, roam the hills where prophets lived, and visit the throne room of kings. There are heroes, villains, romance, wars, eagles, and a picture of life in ancient Biblical times during the time of prophets and kings. A God who pursues, protects, and loves beyond our understanding are themes that run through the pages of this story.
Even though this a work of fiction, Dana McNeely has done an excellent job of being true to Scripture and weaving it into the story of Miriam.
I highly recommend this book. It would make a great Christmas gift for your reading friends along with her first book Rain.

I'm not sure where to start or end with this review. I think I'll just show you the notes I took while I was reading and let you figure out my thoughts. 😉...

I am in the MIDST of the dancing and the torch-juggling!

How beautiful a Jewish wedding is! How meaningful. Maybe we should bring those traditions back. A shofar! Advice from other women. The bride awaiting her bridegroom. It would bring meaning back to Jesus being our Bridegroom.

I know I say this with every Bib fic book I read, but I love seeing this with new eyes-in "real" life! The rain before the Arameans were beaten, the fear, confidence, uncertainty, faith the Israelites had. Wow. I love it.

WOW!! Could you imagine being in battle and hearing the shofar blow? I get chills just thinking about it!

Could you imagine meeting ELIJAH???

I mean, I know the Bible. I know what happens in these accounts. But to get to "know" the family, and then what happens to them? Completely heartbreaking.

Dana McNeely, thank you for allowing me to be on your ARC team.

As I paused in my reading to reach for my Bible to look through part of the story in Scripture, Dana McNeely’s Whirlwind accomplished its purpose: to turn readers to the Word of God. This entertaining biblical fiction novel has likeable characters. From the very beginning I was cheering for Miriam. McNeely’s second novel fills in the background story of little-known parts of biblical history with believable details. Well-written and recommended for biblical fiction fans.

I picked this book to read without any expectations of it. I love Biblical fiction and that's why I wanted to read this one.

Now, I wish I had expectations because this book met and superceded any expectations I would have had.

Amazing, amazing book. Sweet characters. How the author wove a story around a lot of characters without getting one lost or bored is a wonder to me. I loved Miram and Dov. They brought so much beauty to the story.

If you are looking for a Biblical fiction book set in the time of Elijah then this is the one! It kept me reading late into the night.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I loved the first book Rain in this trilogy by Dana McNeely, so I was excited to read the second book Whirlwind, and I was not disappointed. It had explosive action right from the beginning. This author did an incredible job of building suspense and connection with the characters. The well researched details and the setting throughout the story are unmatched. I was so immersed in the setting and action that, for me, it was like an IMAX surround-sound reading experience.

The female main character, Miriam, was my absolute favorite. She started out as a scrappy ‘bird girl’ in the first book and in this book she has grown into a fearless female, not afraid to fight for her family. I loved the scenes where she is taught ‘self defense’ by one of the King’s warriors. This is NOT the self defense of our day. We’re talking bows and arrows, knife fighting, etc. Miriam is an empowered woman – adept at handling a bow and arrow, snaring birds, basket weaving, bread making, herb gathering – picture Katniss Everdeen meets Martha Stewart. I also fell in love with Jaedon, the young boy who, through tragic circumstances, becomes an eagle trainer. His journey is so interesting and the training of his eagle added so much depth to this story.

Although I was familiar with the prophet Elijah’s story from the Bible, the author provided some additional insight about the lives of ordinary people at that time. They had community, loyalty and resilience - even though they suffered hardship and cruel oppression under the reign of the evil King Ahab.

And the battle scenes - so, so good! They were well researched – from the battle strategy to the weaponry and fighting techniques. These battles were so intense (yet presented in a tasteful way) that I stayed up late just to finish the battle scenes. It gave me a new understanding of the word ‘battle scarred’.

I could not put this book down. Amazing detailed action immersed me from the start. I loved and cared about what happened to each character. Suspenseful plot twists kept me turning the page until late hours of the night. The ending was perfect in every way. It delivered more than I would expect in the way of a satisfying ending. Highly recommend!

Reviewer’s suggestion: Make sure to read the ‘Acknowledgement’ and ‘Author’s Note’ pages. They provide some interesting resources to check into regarding eagles and wildlife rehabilitation along with the battles of the Bible.

Rain (Book 1) imagines the life of Elijah the prophet during the events detailed in 1 Kings chapters 17-18 (up to Mount Carmel). It was written predominantly from the perspective of a fictional character called Aban. Destined for a life in the temple of Ba’al Melquart, he runs away and later turns out to be the son of the widow of Zerephath and the servant Elijah speaks to in 1 Kings 18:43.

Whirlwind (Book 2) continues the story, based on the account of 1 Kings 20 through 2 Kings 2. As previously, Elijah’s story provides the structure for the narrative but this time we leave Aban behind, following instead the lives of two fictional characters, Miriam, the niece of Naboth the vineyard owner, and Dov, the captain of King Ahab’s guard. Both were minor characters in Rain. I’d picked up on the hints of a sequel by the reference to Naboth in Rain, so I was excited to send more time with Naboth and his family, despite anticipating their very sad story.

King Ahab & his pagan wife Jezebel are notorious for being the worst monarchs in Isreal’s history, yet God showed them an incredible amount of grace, giving them chance after chance to repent, despite the fact Jezebel did her utmost to destroy Yahweh worship in Israel at that time. This can be something that it’s hard to get your head around and that’s where biblical fiction can be so helpful, drawing us into the historical world and giving us a springboard to further study and understanding. Dana McNeely’s books certainly achieve this.

Although Rain alternated between characters as well, it was very much biased towards Aban so Whirlwind felt a little different. If you have previously read Biblical fiction, and you are a fan of Connilyn Cossette, you will feel right at home reading Whirlwind because the bulk of the narrative lies with Miriam and Dov, whom you realise early on have a destiny together (but you don’t know how they are going to get there). Both characters have spiritual, emotional and physical challenges to overcome to reach where we want them to be. In this regard also, Whirlwind felt quite different to Rain. Rain was not predominantly a romance, but Whirlwind could certainly be categorised as such. Another similarity to Connilyn Cossette. The anticipated romance had the benefit of driving the story forward, ensuring that this quite long book (400 print pages) was certainly not dull. But, even though it could be called a romance, don’t let that put you off if romance isn’t your cup of tea. There is tons in this storyline that is not romantic; lots of meat to sink your teeth into outside of that plot line.

Part of this is the development of the Ahab and Jezebel storyline, as mentioned above. Because we also get to spend a small amount of time in Jezebel’s head, which is fun (I do love to get inside the head of a baddie!) Their characters are both brilliantly portrayed, giving us a fantastic glimpse into the lives of the most notoriously evil royal couple in Israel’s history. Having the events of Kings fleshed out in such a way has been extremely beneficial for my understanding of those times, and as always, Dana McNeely has done a tremendous amount of research, so we really feel like we are there inside the Old Testament narrative.

Spending more time with Elijah in Whirlwind was the highlight for me. Obviously, I love the character of Elijah the prophet (I did name my firstborn son after him.) What I particularly like in Dana’s portrayal is his quirkyness. In Rain we got to witness Elijah’s low times, his insecurities and struggles. In Whirlwind, Elijah is living life amongst the community of rescued prophets. He has come into his own as an older man; he is using what the Lord has taught him to bless others. Elijah’s sense of humour and sacrificial generousity shines through in this story. It was an absolute delight to read.

Even cooler, we get the point of view of an eagle in this story – for just one short section. But the eagle displayed on the cover (with Elijah) is an important part of the storyline. I’ll leave you to find out how!

There are battles in this book. Spiritual battles and physical battles. It is set during the time period when Ben-Hadad of Aram was attacking Isreal. In fact, the opening scene is the – very powerfully described – Siege of Samaria. The warfare is brilliantly depicted throughout, taking you right into the action without being too overwhelming, and you really got an opportunity to see God’s heart behind all that was happening at that time, and the numerous ways he kept reaching out to the people, longing to redeem them even when they didn’t want his love or reign. This book is a timely reminder that we cannot control the events of the world. But God is in control. All we must do is listen carefully, faithfully taking one obedient step at a time.

“Whirlwind” is the second of Dana McNeely’s Whispers on the Wind series, “Rain” being the first.
I am an avid Biblical fiction afficionado and am pleased to say that Ms. McNeely’s books are among the best I’ve read. I appreciate her depth of research, the believability of her varied characters, and her staying true to Scripture. Her research – I learned about a variety of topics, but my favorite was the growth, training, and feeding of eaglets. Her characters – Each grapple with believable, common issues such as grief, self-esteem, work-versus-love, and, of course, unexpected love. True to Scripture – I’m almost afraid to tell you this. As one who loves to study my Bible, I’m sensitive to authors who take liberties with the facts. “Whirlwind” was so spot-on I kept reading, totally absorbed, until I reached the point in the story where I knew what was coming next and I just could not read it. I closed the book. I did not want to read about the coming murders. But I just had to continue the story. After a short time, I picked it back up and was pleasantly surprised at how well the killings were addressed, allowing me to eagerly finish the fascinating story.
This is a great series! It is very well written and easy to read. Order it unhesitatingly!
I am grateful for the advanced copy of “Whirlwind” I received. This review is entirely my own honest opinion. I have pre-ordered a copy of my own and am purchasing some for gifts. Happy reading!

Continued story of Gods prophet, Elijah, and whispers of God on the wind. God sends people to help us out and to find our way back to him. He sends Elijah to help Miriam and her family just when she needs help the most. They experience Gods love and patience through their own hardships and injustices. This story constantly remind us that God is always with us. All we need is to follow his commands without question. I was sent an arc and cannot wait for more great Biblical stories from Dana.

Whirlwind is a Christian historical fiction written by author Dana McNeely. Whirlwind is installment #2 in the Whispers On The Wind series.

Miriam is set to marry Gershon and gain a husband and guardianship of his son. She will be well cared for. King Ahab is preparing for battle.

Scripture: Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the Lord says:’ Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the Lord’.” (I Kings 20:13)

Ms. McNeely did an excellent job placing the reader in the times of kings. The chapters are short and split between Dov and Miriam. If the reader is looking for a slow read this is the book.

I give Whirlwind 3*/5*.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It took me a while to get who the book was talking about from the Bible, like what characters of the Bible we were going to focus on. Both books in the series focus on the time period that the prophet Elijah lives in, the previous book talked about the widow that gave food to Elijah and how Elijah revived her son. In this book we cover the story of Naboth, the vineyard owner that King Ahab and Queen Jezebel killed in order to get the vineyard for themselves.
It was very interesting to see how the author merged the stories and characters together.
I really liked Miriam and Dov, I liked their individual personalities and I liked them together even if they were an extreme slow burn. I also would have liked to see more about them together and be able to see their chemistry more but I still really liked them.
I also loved Jaedon so much, he was such a cute little kid and his interactions with the eagle were so cute.

Dana McNeely draws the reader into the life of Elijah and the events surrounding King Ahab in her delightful new release. I bonded with Miriam who is trying to find love in times where women had little say into who their husband would be. Miriam champions love until tragedy strikes.

McNeely follows Dov who is torn by allegiance to God under the command of a king who fails to place God first in his life. Will Dov realize the errors of his king in time to find true love?

Chapters follow biblical events from I Kings into II Kings and shine a light on the prophets that most people skim over in the Old Testament. The story of Naboth’s vineyard is impactful. The family saga is endearing, and I fell in love with Jaedon outright. I also liked how McNeely weaves the story of eagles into her novel.

A refreshing, touching, and wonderful story.

What insight into the hearts of God and man!

Life has thrown me a few punches lately, but what a reminder that there is always reasons for suffering, and for those who love the Only God Most Holy, there is always purpose, too! For God loves and comforts His own. This book is a keeper, to later binge read as a series. I recommend it to any age that can process the evil hearts of a godless king and queen.
I prefer not to write long reviews. In summary, though fictional through the use of extra characters, this novel remains faithful to the account in God's Word, paints interesting details about birds of prey, war and daily life and lastly, in a wholesome way it presents a story important enough to be in the Bible that all should learn from. Dana McNealy delivers a great story that I highly recommend!!!

A must read!

What a wonderful book! I had never thought about Naboth's family and the before and aftermath of their father's murder by Jezebel and Ahab. It brought to life the terrible incident with wonderful detail, fresh points of view and captivating context.
A Biblically accurate, descriptive, beautiful story with heartache, hope, joy and love as well as suspense and romance! Highly recommended and hope to read more!

Excellent Book

Exciting, fast paced and extremely interesting. I couldn’t put it down! And when I reached the end, I felt bereft. I wanted it to continue.
I love reading biblical history and fictional stories about Bible characters. And then I love to read the actual Bible stories and compare. This book tells the story of Elijah and it’s absolutely fascinating!
I’m very much looking forward to another installment!

Loved It

The author's writing and word use flows smoothly along with the plot and development of her characters. I cheered for the good guy and cringed when reading about the bad guys.

I love the strength of family togetherness and the respect of the family's hierarchy.

I loved the love that grew and the love that persisted and ensured hardships and time.

I loved these people and their story.

Very well done biblical fiction about the story of Elijah the prophet. The author handles the Biblical story well and stays very true to what we know, adding in details that make sense. This is a page turner and very interesting.
I do recommend reading the book Rain first, as it is the first in the series, although the book can stand alone if you don't.
