Rylee Adamson #3

Raising Innocence

Rate this book
"My name is Rylee, and I am a Tracker."

When children go missing, and the Humans have no leads, I’m the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot.

The FBI wants me on their team. Bad enough that they are dangling bait they KNOW I can’t resist.

The catch? It’s on the other side of the ocean.

And if I want what they’re offering, I have to help them with a salvage gone terribly, terribly wrong.

But this time, I have no back up. I have no Plan B.

And I have no O’Shea.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

FRICKEN AMAZING

I honestly can't pinpoint the exact moment I knew this series would steal my heart but I can definitely point out that the emotions I get are tremendous!!!

My heart is lost to Alex, my admiration lies with Rylee and I adore Pamela.... but O'Shea definitely has me sweating in all the right places 😂

Get me the next installment ❤

I’m still trying to make up my mind about this series; the heroine’s competent, and I seem to be inhaling Shannon Mayer’s world-building like a bag of my favourite potato chips. But, then there’s O’Shea, I feel as though the author may have pushed his character well past his limits, and Rylee attracts sidekicks like a bad rash. The positives are definitely up there on my list of Urban Fantasy must-haves; however the negatives aren’t exactly easy to overlook. After 3 books I’m torn. I really am.

Adamson meets another Tracker in RAISING INNOCENCE, and he gives her the 4-1-1 on their particular flavour of magic; it was nice to finally have some of my suspicions confirmed, and learn about what other tricks the protagonist might pull out of her bag in future installments. Giselle also managed to stay lucid long enough to dish out some valuable info, so I’m feeling pretty good about the direction of the main plot arc, and about RYLEE ADAMSON in general.

No one really wants to read about a lead’s mundane day-to-day activities, and as a result I’m perfectly content when a writer opts to skim over their heroine’s job, or whatnot, but sometimes a little bit extra can go a long way. I love that Rylee’s strenuous training sessions are described in full, and that the story unfolds in real time. Mayer also provided a couple of much needed explanations mechanics-wise such as why RA’s Immunity doesn’t affect Alex’s collar. It was bugging me—thank you!

On to the not so rosy elements. I’m having difficulty recognizing O’Shea from one volume to the next; it’s hard to become invested in such an unstable character. I feel like he’s more trouble than he’s worth, and that it might be best to just take him out of the picture entirely. Then there’s Alex, Eve, Giselle, Dox, Pamela… when will the cast growth stop? I’d like to actually get to know some of the secondaries, and be able to identify them by their personalities instead of simply by name.

RAISING INNOCENCE clarified some things while muddying the waters on others. I will be continuing the series, but for how much longer is still up in the air.

Okay, wow. What the hell happened to Rylee? She became an absolute raving bitch in this book with TSTL tendencies. Seriously, she was unlikable throughout. Even the characters to whom she shows her good side couldn't possibly trust she's not going to turn around and bite their head off while insulting them personally and cruelly.

The action's good. The mystery works. The world building remains pretty strong (although I'm really wondering at this point how everyone is not a werewolf). The side characters continue to be enjoyable and even compelling. The main character? Sometimes I downright hated her and doesn't that make for a tiresome read?

If you need someone's help, what's the first thing you do? Obviously, in Rylee's world you walk in full of attitude, and when you get attitude back you pick a personal attribute the person you actually want to engage might be sensitive about and you rag on it. Yep. That's the way she does it. And somehow she does get her way and often gains hard to believe loyalty. I'd noticed that she did that kind of thing sometimes in past books, but in this one she's relentless with that crap. And then she has the nerve to shrug about how she gains as many enemies as allies, like "why me?" It's way more perplexing that she would gain any allies at all.

Anyway, I will read the next one because there is an ongoing arc I'm interested in, but if Mayer continues to paint Rylee as the Queen Bitch of the World, I will be done. It's too bad because the series has some terrific things going for it, and it started so well. I just can't put up with that kind of asshole as a main character.

2.5 stars. Taking a short break for other books, but I'll be back at it soon.

So this is getting better, but perhaps it was mainly because there was almost no Liam or romance in this book. Those two together just don‘t do it for me.

Inhaber the feeling, every urban fantasy badass heroine adopts a child at some point and this is getting kinda old, but oh well. Alex annoyed me as ever, the harpy Eve is growing on me. The new characters were all really bland and one-dimensionale, character building zero.

I like that Rylee learned things like questioning motives from Liam, but all in all she could be a real bitch in this book. There is a big difference between being a selfconfident leader and an asshole. Rylee bordered on asshole more often than not IMO.

The pacing was really good as always, lots of interesting action - and my favourite: the conflict with Agent Valley, where they both try outsmart and manipulate each other.

Off to the next book!

These books really are too short, I want them to last longer!

I'm beginning to like this series more and more. It keeps me curious, it's the kind of book you read in the buss, on your way to work, 'cuz you just can't put it down long enough.
Ah, and in this particular book, everything gets even more interesting. We see the main character making new friends (and new enemies, of course), and Mayer has a wonderful way of building the "friend" characters. I'm so curious about what happens with everyone now!
The romance here was close to non-existing and yet it was great.
I like where the story is going and I can't wait to start the next one! :D

Another cracking book, can't wait for the fourth which is out in just a few weeks.

But a few gripes, I know this is fiction, and fantasy at that. I know that there aren't really ogres and werewolves etc but everything else in the books I've read to date has been written as though it is this world but there are creatures out there that mere humans can't see/ don't know about. Then Rylee comes to London (did you see the possessiveness there?) and steps straight into Mary Poppins!

1. In the UK "pants" means underwear - if a strange man says wait until I put on my pants it means he is naked from the waist down. In the UK we say trousers.

2. No-one I have ever met calls policemen "bobbies" (Mary Poppins excepted), "coppers" yes, I can even allow "fuzz", albeit only from a teenager.

3. London police stations are, by and large, extremely high tech as a result of the terrorist threats to the UK from the IRA and Al Quaeda. The idea that a central London police station would have gas lights converted to electric is risible.

4. We don't refer to citizens of the USA as "Yanks" (well not since the 1940s), we just use "Americans" like the rest of the world. It felt unrealistic for that person to call Rylee a "dumb Yank" - especially because the insult was contextually wrong, Rylee hadn't demonstrated ignorance, maybe "gun happy American" or "shoot first, ask questions later cowboy" would have been more appropriate?

Anyhoo, had to get that off my chest (and being British I didn't feel comfortable telling Shannon Mayer on her facebook page so I'm being all passive agressive on Goodreads!).

Other than that, what a rollercoaster, all our old favourites are there good and bad. Rylee meets some new friends and we get introduced to some more arcane creatures!

People seems to change sides "are they good, are they bad?" from chapter to chapter and we find out what the blue socks are all about.

There's sadness, there's betrayal, a baby, zombies, druids, vomiting (actually lots of vomiting and blood magic.

This was nowhere near as good as the first two. 3 stars is generous. There is a issue of continuity in this series that gets worse as she Mayer builds the world. Planes have to be specially outfitted to fly sups but they can all drive? There were a few other things and lots of stuff a good editor would have corrected. I also feel like Rylee was unnecessarily mean in book 3. I get she’s tough and doesn’t follow rules but at times Rylee was just a straight up disrespectful bitch. How has no one killed her yet? Being a kickass heroine doesn’t mean you get to treat everyone but your charges like shit. The story and the world are still fascinating so I will continue with the series but I think I will pick it up a little later.

Shannon Mayer’s Rylee Adamson series is like any other really good paranormal series in the same way that a Formula One car is like a Prius: they’re both good for what they are, but one is a hell of a lot more exciting to watch.

Rylee Adamson is the Formula One of heroines, and “Raising Innocence” finds her—and Mayer—in top form.

Rylee Adamson is back in North Dakota, training, wishing she could help her lover-turned-werewolf, Liam O’Shea, and taking care of her ailing mentor, Giselle. Her former best-friend/semi-sister stops by for an unpleasant visit. Then Rylee finds herself visited by O’Shea’s boss, begging her to solve a string of missing children cases. She reluctantly agrees. By the way. The cases are in England.

Great.

There is one bright spot, though: another Tracker is in a London hospital. Finally, Rylee may be able to get her questions answered, not to mention the training she needs.

So Rylee and her loyal, goofy half-changed werewolf, Alex, are off across the pond, as they say, ready to help. Rylee soon finds that the British equivalent of the FBI’s paranormal squad is just as stodgy and unhelpful as their American counterparts.

Departmental interference is the least of Rylee’s problems. She has no problem tracking the missing children. The problem is, they keep moving. Whoever has them is able to move through The Veil at will. Worse still, that “whoever” has a shit-ton of zombies ready to attack Rylee at every turn. Add to that an unwanted appearance by the suave vampire, Faris, some pissed-off Druids, and yet another supernatural orphan to go along with Alex and the harpy, Eve, and Rylee more than has her hands full.

This could be my favorite novel in the Rylee Adamson series thus far. What Ms. Mayer does so well is pare away all useless information and extraneous subplot threads. She does this without skimping on the basics—we get a great feel for settings and, especially, action. Also, Ms. Mayer has found a way to create well-drawn characters, without feeling the need to provide complete family trees, school transcripts, and immunization records.

In short, these novels—like Rylee—are lean and strong, and they pack one hell of a punch.

Most Highly Recommended

Left Hanging

Ugh I need to know if she finds Liam and he's ok. Molly that traitor I want to strangle her, however if we remember her master is pure evil anyway right? Poor Rylee keeps losing loved ones and pick up more strays. Can't wait to see Pamela in real action.

I knew from the first page I was going to love this series and it has become one of my favourites. I read it years ago and now I am leaving a review.
Rylee has the best and the worst job, to find those who are lost, the ones no one can find but it is not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes it will break your heart.
It is an intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller filled with tension. The story includes alliances, threats, betrayal, riddles, and plots, all infused with a touch of humour to keep the pages turning.

I like this series.

Rylee kicks arse!
Alex has really started growing on me again.
O'Shea... *sigh* I would have liked to see more of him but I understand that he's going through a lot mentally and Milly isn't bloody helping!

Looking forward to the next book to see what Rylee is going to do to get O'Shea back in her life after him going AWOL.

3.5 stars

There is a Graphic Audio production of the whole Rylee Adamson Series, which includes 10 books of the series and five short stories. All this was included in my audible subscription. That's how I decided to listen to all the books and short stories. Otherwise it would have been pretty costly to listen to this production.

The first two short stories and book 1 and two were 3.5 and 4 stars. The rest of the series was a solid three stars rating.

At some point the story felt to drawn out but since I had passed the point of no return, where I just wanted to know who the stories ends I finished 15 Graphicaudio books. I think the story could have been shortened without loosing anything. From the beginning two things were predictable: One (and even more) person was Demon possessed and this person will die. And also there will be an Elemental involved, whom we meet again in book 9.

I liked Rylee and Mayer killed off some of the good guys. Two deaths were not really necessary and didn't feel right.

I would say this is a drawn out series, but okay, to listen for free in the graphic audio version. Stay away from the series if you tend to dnf series and hate it if the author kills beloved important side charcters.

*My Thoughts*

Raising Innocence, by author Shannon Mayer, is the third installment in the Rylee Adamson series. Protagonist Rylee Adamson is a tracker, and an immune, which means that magic mostly doesn't work against her. She has spent 10 years searching for lost & missing children with remarkable accuracy. Only one other child has ever proven impossible to track. Rylee's own sister Berget who disappeared 10 years ago.

I've seen some reviews say Rylie is more bitchy in this one, and that's a con. They're right. I get having an attitude, but she hits below the belt on first meet with people who feel self-conscious and makes it more personal. Overall this was an interesting book and the ending was sad but well done. I didn't like the back and forth with O'Shea this time and that situation, and the vampire thing irritates me, when it usually doesn't. We'll see on the next book.

I don't know how that's possible but this series is getting better and better! Another new case for Rylee to be done, and new supernaturals coming her way. I so love to see how Rylee grows stronger and there is that soft string of her heart that touches me! Just love this series! Going for the next book now!

NOTE: Prior to reading Raising Innocence, read Tracking Magic if you haven't already. It fills in the blanks.

I picked up the first book in the series, Priceless on a whim a few years ago. It was on sale for $0.79, I liked the cover and the blurb drew me in. I hadn't really read any urban fantasy prior to it but I've always loved fantasy and the idea of a more grown up fantasy grabbed me. And it was perfect. Everything I expected and so much more. I proceeded to demolish the remaining available books and Shannon Mayer has fast become one of my favourite authors. All of the books are full of fast paced, well written plots, hysterically funny lines and lots of heart. The characters worm their way under your skin until you're cheering with them at their successes and sobbing with them at their failures. Couldn't recommend the series more highly and will certainly be rereading many many times.

It only gets better and better.... loving Rylee Adamson more and more!

></a><br /><br /><a href=

And the plot only goes thicker! Loved it! Rylee takes on a case of someone or something is abducting a lot of dying kids and in London.

Again, lots of suspense, non-stop action, heartwarming, funny and full of surprises.

There is betrayal.... loss... and finding new friends/family/ally. Rylee seems to often find the unwanted ones and takes them as her own, making her their mentor or their big kick-ass sister... meaning new characters are introduced... one of those is Pamela, a fourteen years old powerful witch...

(Sorry Jacob (of Twilight Saga) fans, lol)

It's Rylee's first mission working with the FBI. Will she ever go by the book for the FBI?! NOT!!!! Again, go go Rylee!

One of the scenes I like most... thought it was funny and pretty cool....

“Feels a bit like a bad joke,” I said. “A shape shifter and Druid walk into a police station recently molested by zombies.”

Agent Valley snorted. “You forgot the part about the witch child hacking off zombie limbs with a sword.”

Yeah yeah, I'm weird that way... hehe....

Now, moving on to the next adventure!!!!

"Raising Innocence" is another great installment in the Rylee Adamson series. It has been over a month and yet Rylee hasn't seen or heard from O'Shea. She knows he is out there struggling with his new werewolf identity but she misses him terribly.

After asking her best friend, Milly, to leave her home Rylee Mus t come to grips that there is something seriously wrong g with her former friend. Giselle continues to have moments of lucidity; but, her mental state continues to fade. She takes a drastic step in order to assist Rylee one last time and the ending will have dire consequences.

FBI Agent Valley comes to ask for Rylee's assistance in helping to track down a serial abductors of terminally ill children. She us about to decline when she discovers that if she takes the job she will have an opportunity to meet another tracker for the first time in her life.

This job will take Rylee and her crew to London where the stuffy Interpol agency wants to put her under control. Clearly they need a much needed lesson on who they are dealing with and Rylee is just the person for the job.

This book is shocked full of emotions from sadness to sheer joy at the antics of my favorite werewolf, Alex. Ms. Mayer keeps the reader guessing at times and never fails to provide plenty of action. My only complaint is that there just was not enough O'Shea is this book for my liking. Hopefully next book he will come back with a vengeance.

Raising Innocence brings another fantastic addition to the Rylee Adamson series.

Coerced by the FBI, Rylee jumps the pond to investigate terminally ill children going missing from hospitals. The twisted and warped creature behind these events is escalating and its up to Rylee to bring these lost children home for their burials.

The plot thickens and Rylee is getting the full dreary picture of her prophesied future. The story is definitely growing darker with the full aspect if the potential evil of Rylee doesn't prevail.

I am still completely riveted to Mayer's vivid story telling. The world in which Rylee fights to survive is crafted with exquisite detail and care. The character list is growing but with each new additions we are drawn deeper into the story's spell. I can't wait to see what happens next, thank goodness its out so I don't have to wait!

After the epicness of the last book, I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this one. I liked the change of pace in London, but I felt there was a bit too much going on this time. Rylee's life is always chaotic, but it got a bit too much at the end with all the zombies and druid weirdness. I kept wanting to skip over those bits to get back to Liam and the important issues. That being said though, I have high hopes for the next book though because it should hopefully keep Liam's predicament as the main focus. I have no doubt he is strong enough to fight off whatever is happening to him, and then he can come back and kill Milly ASAP!

There are also a lot of loose ends with Faris the vampire. He acts jealous over Rylee and Liam but I think it only boils down to him wanting her for his own needs and nothing more. He is using his charm to try to win her over, after all, he can't very well kill her for refusing to help him because she will soon be the last tracker. Which brings me to Jack Feen, a dying tracker who is now helping her while he has time left. I thought it was great to have someone she can get help from, it will be a shame to see him go.

Definitely looking forward to the next book, but I hope it gets back on track. I miss my Liam and Rylee!

Not bad. I would have liked the setting to come a little more into play. Most of the story took place in London, but it didn't feel like it was the London we all know. I liked the new characters, though of course Rylee was a massive bitch to them. It's honestly becoming a struggle to like her. There were hints at events coming up in future books, and hopefully they'll be worth the wait. I guess Milly came across as more of a villain, but it still feels contrived, especially since Rylee was a big bitch to her in the other books. I also didn't like how Berget was kind of cast off near the end. That was a HUGE plot hole that seemed to randomly snap closed. But, I bought all these books (if I'm gonna read a series, I'm gonna read it the whole way through), so this is one more down, 10 more to go... :S

****Warning*****Hey, Mom, the guilt trip you gave me after you read the first two books (when I explicitly warned you not to) didn't work. There are still F-bombs, violence and grabbing of inappropriate body parts. I'd say I'm sorry, but that would be a lie. And you didn't raise no liar.*

The FBI wants Rylee on their team, and they're pulling out all the stops to make sure it happens--dangling a bait she can't resist.

Which happens to be in London. The catch? She has to finds out who is snatching children out of their hospital beds in their final moments.

Once on the other side of the ocean, the secrets and lies that have been building around Rylee's world begin to crack.

Can she face it without O'Shea at her side? Or can she let him go and once more fight the darkness on her own? Worse, does she even have a choice?

I enjoyed this series, especially seeing how it intertwined with the Elemental Series. However, I'm not so sure my teenagers would enjoy it. There is a fair amount of language and gore that even I skipped through. In addition to that there are some sex scenes to skip over, and a few crude/lewd moments that I could have done without. I understood the language was a way of distinction with the Trackers in that world, and if it hadn't been for how well done the story was I don't think I would have finished the series.
I did appreciate the moral to the series, that love for family and friends really can help us conquer the darkness in our lives. I also liked how the chain of events that was her life was realized at the end in a way that led her to where she was, and how necessary those events were to building who Riley was and developing why she was loved so much by her"family ".

Rylee is finally approached by FBI which has been trying to get her to work for them for a while. The Job: a list full of missing children across the ocean, most likely dead. The Bait: there's another Tracker.

I am loving how this series is picking up. O'Shea is still missing but I feel he will pop back up next book and that's going to bring some exciting Alpha Male into the story. Rylee has learned a crap ton about why the vampire, Farisis, is obsessed with her. We also leave off with her learning more about her abilities. Milly has gone to the dark side. Giselle gets a moment of lucidity and then... nope. I can't tell you.
