They said I deserved the monster’s wrath… And they were right. I’m the traitor and the villain in my own story.
When I walked away from the Armanelli Family, I broke the oath that bound me to them. By blood, I now belong to the enemy. I'll inherit billions and solidify alliances where no one else can.
But, by love, I still belong to Rome. The underboss of the Italian Mob. And every time I see him, he glares at me with indecisiveness, like he wants to stand beside me, but also rip me apart. The twisted part in me yearns for him to do both.
He is the one obstacle I must overcome. Because he has a piece of my heart that I have to learn to live without. Yet, can the monster in him leave me behind too? There’s an undeniable tie that will always tether us, and I don’t think he can ignore the pull. He's the monster after all. And the monster always comes for what’s his.
This book is the final installment of the New Reign Mafia Duet. It is not a standalone. Please start with Heart of a Monster.
Shain Rose is an author of Contemporary Romance and New Adult novels. She fights for love one word a time. Those happily ever afters can be difficult to get to sometimes!
When she isn't writing, she's spending the days with Doc G, Liv and Gray Gray, and their wild golden retriever. She and Doc G drink way too much coffee, eat way too much candy, and fight like they've been married for hmm how long has it been now?
Life is good when the kids are behaving.
On the off chance she's not writing or spending time with family and friends, she's calling them to talk. And if no one answers.... then she's reading and watching trashy TV.
Okay this was intense and I loved it. First of all Katie is such an amazing Mc. She was confident and independent and I really liked how she was more important in the mafia than Rome. Usually the man is always the more powerful one and has the leading position but in this one I loved how Katie was in control and always knew what she was doing.
Now the spice was great. Her chemistry with Rome grew in this book more and more and I liked how their relationship developed.
There was my least favorite trope in here but since it was executed really well it didn’t really bump down my rating. Its just my personal opinion and I know a lot of ppl actually love this trope.
The ending was really good. She stood up for herself and yet again I loved her power
Gahhhhh Rome and Katie are literally everything!!! There are no words I could say that could describe the epicness that our author brought to this story… After we were left with hangover from he** we get all the answers that we were looking for and so much more. Katie is such a bada** female character and seriously doesn’t need anyone to save or protect her but that is no match for Rome that man could careless and he would burn the entire world to the ground for the girl he is totally in love with. If you thought the spice in book 1 was hot I am here to tell you that one has nothing on the spice level in Love of a Queen. This baby was explosive off the charts HOT AF!!! This was such a perfect conclusion to such an epic story!!!
I'll say it again Mob/Mafia Romances are not my usual reading preference. But Shain Rose gives something to these characters that makes me need to know where their destiny lies. I really enjoyed this duet! Katalina leaving book one is desperately seeking to find her place and her power in this world as she finally feels she may be able walk away with a little freedom. Is she right? Leaving book one Rome had to do his best to let Katalina be on her own. But he really didn't he was there lurking in the shadows, watching protectively. Will he stay hidden? Of course not he loves her, he needs her to breath.
There is allot going on in this book and I'd love to spill it all to you right now. Rome and Katie are definitely both ready to spill blood without hesitation! There is a reason the book is called Love of a Queen, Rome knows are you ready to find out? It's going to be a bumpy ride.
Loved this duet from the very first word! And Shain wrote a fantastic conclusion for Rome and Katie!
These two are so HOT, I don’t know what to do with myself. The back and forth drives me up the wall but it always leads to fireworks that have me all smirk-y!
Katie has been a Queen from the beginning and in this one, we really get to see the Queen ascend her throne.
Fierce. Bold. Strong. This woman brings men to their knees and has the Bratva and the Mafia laying their lives at her feet. She easily sheds the “Kate-bait” moniker and sit at her rightful place on the throne. And my boy Rome, has her back. Always. And still owns her between the sheets!
However much I loved this, there was a scene I wasn’t feeling and that’s only because in my mind, Rome’s possessiveness just wouldn’t give in. And was that necessary to prove she owned them all!? But besides that, this scene was sooooooo freakin’ HAWT!!! 🥵
2.5⭐️ This book was confusing and angsty. It still had some good spice otherwise the rating would be lower. We didn’t get much of a romance bc there was so much back and forth, and when you finally thought things clicked there was a weird ass scene at a sex club towards the end. It wasn’t even really hot bc you’re wondering the whole time what is the motivation? The end game? What’s going to happen? Is she going to get with other guys? How is this showing her power? Worth the read?: NO Reread?: NO
A conclusion of dark and epic proportions! The minute this hit my inbox today I began reading and I genuinely hated every time I had to put it down to do some adulting things. After a major cliffhanger in Heart of a Monster, Love of a Queen is a stunning conclusion to Rome & Katie’s story.
I will forever love Shain’s work for the strong heroines she creates and Katie is probably my favorite of the lot! Her strength and determination know no bounds. Her love for her family and friends is unlimited. And her dedication to others is just straight up incredible. Love of a Queen is just as sexy and dark and tantalizing as Heart of a Monster if not more so! I’m truly so excited to see more about the Armanelli family (BASTIEN COMING UP NEXT PLEASE 🥵😍) and more of the dark and dirty “underworld” of Chicago.
This wasn't really my favourite...mainly because I didn't feel the plot of this 300ish page book didn't really exist. The cliff-hanger at the end of the first half that gave me so much hope and promise for this second one was addressed/resolved within the first couple chapters and the rest of the book was literally the MC saying to the Love Interest: "I love you, but we can't"..."Why"...."Because I say so!"..."Yes I know I said we could be together yesterday...but its been 2 hours so I need to change my mind." If you can't tell from my dramatic recreation, there was no reason for them to be apart except for lengthing the book. And to prove this point, the antagonist of this series whole idea was that women are only in the mafia world to provide sex to men...so how did she defeat them...by having sex in front of everyone and letting the guy do whatever he wanted to her? I mean, it was hot...but how does that disprove his arguement or make people take her seriously as being the one in charge and not just doing the man's bidding? It made no sense. The character even called her out for it making no sense and she's like I know but it will work! WTF NO! Plot holes are the bane of my existance, good writing style but pleaasssee write your plots better...or just don't write unnessary sequels. This could have been 50-100 on the end of the other book. Totally unnessary. Would have been 1 star, but mafia, good sex, good writing style and the occasional Cade moment earnt it 2.
Love of a Queen by Shain Rose is book Two in the New Reign Mafia Duet. This continues the story of Katalina 'Katie' and Rome. So, you should read the previous book : Heart of a Monster before starting this one. This book picks up where we left off with Katie trying to find her place and some freedom. Rome is so in love with Katalina but even though he tries he won't let her go. This duet has been a page turning read. I couldn't get enough and I will be looking for more books from this author.
This book picked up right where the previous book had left off. From the opening scene, there was no mistaking that the intensity and suspense were going to carry over from the previous book. I oftentimes found myself on the edge of my seat in this book because of the author's ability to make a scene come alive on the pages. I am glad that this author has dived into the world of mafia romance because she is quite gifted at it. This duet is so different than her previous books and I am here for it which says something because I loved her previous books too.
There were things that were put into play behind the scenes that seemed to influence what was happening in Katie and Rome's life and at times that was both good and bad because while it did help to advance the story, at the same time I found myself wondering the reasons why it was even needed (Katie's grandfather in particular).
I enjoyed watching the push and pull between Katie and Rome. These two characters were fire together and kept me involved in the story. One of their steamy encounters just about melted my kindle.
That being said, there were moments that I did struggle with this book at times. The transitions between scenes were not always as fluid as I would have liked and I found myself having to reread parts of the story to see where or even when it had jumped in time. I was able to follow along but it did take me out of the story. Still, this was a great conclusion to this duet. I look forward to the next story that the author releases from this world.
Such a great conclusion to this duo! I loved the progression of Katie and Rome’s relationship and watching them grow as individuals. Just when I didn’t think Katie could get any more badass, BAM. She is such a force to be reckoned with and I am HERE FOR IT.
Like the first book, this one is deliciously angsty, dark, and steamy.
And I am soo excited to hear that we are getting more in this world because I absolutely adore this mafia family and need more more more!
Such a good idea at first, with a lot of potential. I was impatient to read it. A strong woman finally ruling mafia. She becomes the boss so quickly. It could have gone so many ways.
But no, Rome is very disrespectful with her in situations where he should have let her made her position known. When she talks for the first time with the chief of police he jumps in and doesn’t let her talk and makes her look like a weak woman that can’t take care of herself. I hated that part.
It was stupid and senseless that the author added the accident pregnancy so fast. To give a woman such a great power and not let her use it? Cause bam! Pregnant. Really?
And the scene at the end at the club? Are you serious? Nothing powerful about that. It was useless and dumb. No point to it. Made no sense.
Heart of a Queen is the conclusion of the New Reign mafia duet. This is the second and final book in this duology and it was just as dark and spicy as the first!
Heart of a Monster finished on a major cliffhanger and Love of a Queen is a perfect conclusion to Rome & Katalina’s story.
I LOVED seeing Katie even more strong and powerful in this book. She has never let the tragic events of her life dictate her ability to not only love her family but fight for them.
This is a dark mafia romance with suspense, hidden secrets, and ruthless characters. This book is 18+ and please check trigger warnings!
Katie wanted answers for questions only the enemy could answer. After fighting to have a place in the family, to be equal to the men, she realized she was born to be more. Leaving the man she loves behind to get her answers might end in bloodshed.
Rome felt like he lost Katie, and when or if she comes back, she would be different. Will their love survive this war they’re fighting? Rome wants her to see that the world of the bratva isn't one she can control without losing parts of herself. He wants her to see that she's his family and he will always stand by her.
I think this book is better than the first one. We see Katie finding her worth without waiting for the men’s approval. She finally understood what her father meant when he told her she was meant to stand out. A queen going after the men who harmed her, who harmed other women. I found her annoying in the first book, but she proved me wrong in this one. Even when she seemed to run impulsively, trying to make a point.
Unfortunately, the same thing from the first book made it here; like repeating and forcing the point to become an issue when it’s not. That pulled me away from the story in both books in this duet. Repeating some words and sentences gets boring after reading them two or three times. Katie seems to enjoy repeating herself.
I don’t believe I’ve read a book with a woman controlling the mafia before. I’d be looking for more books with badass women leading tough men. If you know any books like that, please point me towards them.
The queen and her monster. We were power and chaos bound together.
OH MY GOD. I am speechless. This duet. This couple. This plot. I just can'tttt! I'm completely in love with all the characters, and I'm diving straight into InevitableInevitable, first book in the Stonewood series and I can't wait to read about these brothers.
Rome and Katie, in this final book, can finally find a place to find their demons together, with the help of their family, the Armanellis and the bratva, where Katie is queen. This story was a rollercoaster and that ending made my heart almost just out of my chest. I loved every single second of it and I was reading fast af but didn't want it to finish at the same time. I'm seriously obsessed with all Shain's characters. What a masterpiece!! I loved it!
'It's amazing that you're the killer in the family and yet you want to cuddle.'
Soo some parts were good, others were straight-up cringe. I guess mafia romance isn't really for me (either that, or Shain Rose's brand of it) because while there's the usual/expected misogyny and mentions of sexual abuse, Katalina isn't really a meek character in any way. She does come into her own quite a bit and I was living for that in a very support women's wrong way.
Meanwhile, Rome is such a grumbly love interest with anger management issues to the ceiling LOL. Plus, the back and forth, hot/cold thing was getting annoying after a while and then it became a non-issue after that [redacted] surprise, gaah. I also felt like all they had going in their relationship was physical attraction so that was a bit of a letdown especially when they spent a lot of time developing an emotional bond in book 1 only for it to be reduced to them having sex almost every time they are around each other.
Plus, I have to say I was kinda meh about the voyeurism and I felt like it didn't really serve its purpose because of what happened right after. All that wasted effort LOL. Also, second time reading about anal sex in a romance and it had to be in front of an audience, sigh.
Anyway, this was better than book 1 at least and no one blew any raspberries, phew hah.
An amazing ending for this duet! The push and pull from Katie and Rome had me in an emotional ping-pong match. I loved that Katie stood up for herself and proved herself with the bratva. I also loved seeing how emotional Rome could get around his woman. the fact that he believed in her SO much when she wasn't sure she could handle it showed the growth of his character immensely. No longer was he *just* the monster-- he was now forever tied to his love. And after Katie finally believed in herself, she could accept that love. I ADORED that-- letting the girl love herself before allowing others in. And the plot twists? The club scene? Oh man, people will be talking about this book for AGES!
The conclusion of the New Reign Duet that I’ve been waiting for!
After Heart of a Monster ended with that HUGE cliffhanger, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Love of a Queen to finally get answers. What’s gonna happen to Katie? Will Rome and Katie get their happy ending?
Shain answered ALL of those questions, and executed it in a beautiful way!
Katie is such a strong female character, and Rome is so hopelessly in love with her. Rome would set the world on fire for his Kate-Bait, but Katie can and will do all of that herself.
What I loved about this story was how mafia heavy it was! Shain’s expertise is definitely mafia romance! I loved the way she immersed us in the world of the bratva, giving us all the violence and crime that I love!
And that club scene… Lord have mercy, Shain brought the heat! I was so not expecting it, but Shain did that honey!
Love of a Queen was such an epic conclusion. The spice, the emotion, the LOVE… you don’t wanna miss it!
ARC graciously provided by author Shain Rose in exchange for an honest review.
After reading Heart of a Monster which is book one in this duet I couldn’t wait to read this. My expectations was high as book one was brilliant. Well this story blew my mind and my expectations.
Katie is a Russian Princess. Rome is the underboss of the Italian Mob. Katie wow what a fabulous character. The chemistry between these two is oh so hot.
I absolutely love this duet and this is a brilliant conclusion to this duet. Can’t wait to read more from this author.
What the fuck is going on with all the foot stomping is she five? Also he really didn’t need to call her « woman » at every damn sentence ,hated the pregnancy trope. First book was fine but I just didn’t connect with the characters and no improvement was shown in this book either, it was also really dragged out for nothing the plot was really slow. Disappointing.
Katie was such a bitch!!! Stupid stupid stupid stuborn silly naive little girl who thinks she's a queen. Also, wtf did I just read?! Really?! Thats how you win over the bratva?!? Really?!? WTF DID I JUST READ!! Only gave this 2 stars for poor Rome who was awesome!!! One additional star was for the overall story. Still read this as a stepping stone to the Tarnished Empire series.
Yet again, not my favorite Shain Rose but slightly better than heart of a monster. I genuinely did not understand the story line of this one. You’re telling me that Katie just murders her uncle right in front of his father and then gets to lead the Russian Bratva immediately? It’s just so ridiculously unlikely. Also, so much fucking overkill with Rome being “monster” and Katie being “queen” or even worse “Kate-bait”. Like she hated being bait so why is her lover calling her that?! And then the scene at the end where Rome fucked her in the ass in front of the entire sex club made me cringe so hard. Why on earth would that solidify their relationship or earn them respect? She was already pregnant with his baby! Everyone knows you’re tied for life now! Ugh. I liked Rome and Katie’s dynamic better throughout this book but the plot was pretty bad. Also, still confused by the ending. Did the bratva die out with the death of Ivan or did Katie take over? Just not my favorite duet.
After leaving the men behind, Katie gets picked up by her uncle Dimitri. He immediately tells Katie that he wants her dead and hates her because he’s supposed to inherit the family business and she’s a threat to that. They end up at Ivan’s house (Dimitri’s father) and Katie shoots Dimitri after he remarks about her being a mutt and a whore. Ivan tells Katie that he wants to take over as leader of the bratva and she gets super excited thinking she can change the city. He tells her to use her alliance with the Armanelli’s to her advantage so she heads over to see them. Meanwhile, the men are rounding up all the people who wronged Katie throughout her life. They even discover that their father Mario was the one who put the hit out on Katie’s mother and Rome kills him. Katie walks in right as this is happening and is absolutely disgusted. Rome tells her to come back to him, that he loves her but she says no because she wants to be respected as a leader. The cat and mouse game takes place again until Katie ends up pregnant with Rome’s baby and they decide to make their relationship work. Unfortunately Ivan and the other Russians are pissed that Rome isn’t as good as Bastian and want to kill the baby and Rome. To try to gain some respect, Katie has Rome fuck her in front of the whole bratva and elite members of the city. Afterwards, Rome gets kidnapped by Ivan and Ivan tells Katie to shoot him. She starts talking to all of Ivan’s men and listing all the ways in which their lives have improved since she took over as leader and they shoot Ivan instead. Katie is able to save Rome and he wakes up okay. In the epilogue, their daughter, Ivy is doing well and is adored by her dad Rome. Katie gets one more tattoo of her daughters name and they all live happily ever after.

I’m so glad this duet is finally over. I’ve liked a lot of other books by this author, but this one certainly isn’t one of them. I actually really liked the first book, but this second book was so tedious with was so much disconnect in the story. I felt like the author could not authentically establish the characters personalities so I lost all sense of chemistry between them. There were moments when I thought for sure it had been written by AI. It was so excessively wordy. At points I felt like I was reading the characters’ rambling diaries. It was as if the author was trying so hard to create poetic prose but instead it came across as long winded and forced. And the sex club scene at the end felt like the author was trying to write a taboo scene that she hoped readers would gush about on social media. It felt totally unnecessary to the plot and completely contradictory to what I felt like Katalina had been trying to establish in her role as a leader. And honestly it was just awkward and cringeworthy. And this is coming from someone who reads a lot of smut.
Listen.. I loved the first book. I was excited about reading what happens next . Love rome and Katie together but I’ll be honest, I don’t understand how it was not okay for them to be together. The entire plot was boring at this point, and I hated.. absolutely hated the club scene towards the end. I didn’t see how something like that instilled power and respect from the bratva and mafia.
I love a strong FMC. I loved aspects of Katie’s character at times, but I just couldn’t take the narcissism. I really wish I hadn’t read this book. It tainted the books I’ve read previously about Bastian, Dante and Cade. This whole book has been about a woman using her body, moments of her using her heart or her brain, but mostly just using her body for literally everything. The only point she ever tried to make was that she had men lusting after her. That’s it. I think we were supposed to see her as powerful and independent, but all of that was overshadowed by her need to be the sexual center of attention. 🤦🏻♀️ I don’t like books where men do this and I definitely don’t like books where women reduce their worth to their ability to inspire lust in men while claiming she is taking control or power. The club scene made literally no sense. Her justification for having the most intimate sex with Rome on a table in front of “her boys” and the mafia and bratva was to prove they all worshiped her and that she and Rome were for forever. Most people would be convinced by the fact that she was having Rome’s baby. MOST people would prove all that through marriage, not a cringey second rate porn scene in front of “family”. There was nothing powerful or transcendent about that display of pure embarrassment. No one needed to see her getting banged on a table in a sex club to prove that she is a queen. This whole book was a major ick and the only character I even remotely liked was Rome and that poor man was walked all over and treated like garbage most of the time. I felt for the Katie who had been abused, but I despised the Katie who used her body to prove points and get her way. She didn’t want to be equal, she wanted that pedestal.

I do not even know how to begin to present the emotional and physical explosion that was this book. There is so much to say. Katie is so freaking bad ass. I love everything about her. I admire her desire to eliminate sex trafficking. Not just in her territory but nationwide. She is ruthless when it comes to this atrocity. As a victim of it herself, she is fierce and protective, and her men are ready and willing to stand by her and see to it that her demands are met.
There are a few scenes that give you RH vibes. Where you are on the edge of your seat wondering OMFG are they, is this about to happen. But it's' just love, devotion, loyalty. No RH spice. But still very good and exciting.
Rome is just everything. He's a super alpha and struggles with accepting that Katie doesn't need him to be her knight in shining armor. We so sooo many sides of him in this second book. It's like every time he opens his mouth, he's either melting your panties or your heart.
Trigger warnings: Sex Trafficking is a major subject in this series. However, there are flashbacks in this book from when Katie was a victim. They aren't super descriptive or upsetting but in case that's something you are sensitive to I wanted to make it known. Skipping the scenes will not take away from this book.
I absolutely loved this duet and look forward to reading the previous books and all future stories. Bastian, Cade, and Dante deserve stories. It was never clarified but if Marksam is single I want his story too! LOL
