Ancient are the stories of the Dark Angels. The warriors of this clandestine Chapter hold to secrets as readily as they do their swords, the shame of ages past following them into the Dark Millennium.

Their ranks are replete with heroes. Legends tell of Supreme Grand Master Azrael, Keeper of the Truth and bearer of the Lion Helm; Ezekiel, Chief Librarian and wielder of potent warp-magic; and Balthasar, heroic sergeant of the Fifth Company, to name but a few.

In war zones the length and breadth of the galaxy, the Dark Angels fight for the Emperor, for atonement and for the greater glory of the Imperium.

This omnibus edition includes four novels, one novella and several short stories by two of Black Library’s finest authors.

Overall: Unlike the Blood Angles omnibus, the stories except for the first two and maybe two others are mostly scattered across the Warhammer timeline. The Blood Angels have a more focused story in which every story within the Omnibus seems to push forward in one way or another. The Dark Angels does not and that is generally okay. Because of this the cast of characters is a bit more mixed with a few showing up in multiple books. Generally, a really good collection of stories.

Book 1: Angel of Darkness: The first of the books and it does a good job going over the history of the Dark Angels and their history with the Fallen. Bores is a great character blinded by the hunt of the Fallen, but in the end, he decides to sacrifice himself in order to save the planet he vowed to protect. Overall, just a good view into the Dark Angels and their secretive nature.

The Purging of Kadillus: I find this to be a strange second book with it being a prequel to Angel of Darkness. It was published after, but in the collection, I think it would have been better placed before Angel of Darkness. The story follows a massive Ork invasion which is mentioned as part of the backstory within Angel of Darkness. Bores shows up; however, he is more of a minor player within the book. Naaman was the highlight of the story, by far one of the best characters within the novel. Belial was also great.

Azrael: I don't know why but I did not really get into this novel. Maybe because I was comparing this to Dante, another Chapter Master origin story. I just don't find Azrael that compelling. He is a fine character, but the other named characters of the Dark Angel are just more interesting. There are some really good moments within the book though. First book I read with the Night Lords as the major villain. Azrael cut down a demonic machine gun dragon which is cool. Azrael just fine, not great, but not bad either. A shame this is his only book which he features in besides the short story following this one.

Protector of Secrets: This one confuses me to be honest. It is so short, but the setup is really good. Marching through the palace of the defeated foe, Azrael and the general talk about all sorts of things. The story changes when they reach the throne room to find the enemy leader, a member of the Fallen was behind the uprising. He also decares that he has been waiting for them. At this point Azrael cuts down the general and the story ends. I'm sad because I see the potential this story and it a shame it goes nowhere.

The Eye of Ezekiel: The next book of the Omnibus and by far a good book. The story focus on a world which has been preparing for war for decades. I'm a little sad this was not explored further, but it is interesting. The Ork have arrived and the Mechanicus forces the Dark Angels to aid in the world defense. They show and the main focus is that Ezekiel is having issues with his warp magic. At the same time Balthasar is being tested to see if he is fit for the inner circle of the Dark Angels. I really like Laboon and his squad. I really like how Ezekiel is forced to face his weakening power and how he ends up getting his power only after facing the demo he feared so much. Serpicus is also interesting since he is shown proof of the Fallen despite not knowing anything about them. Both Serpicus and the mystery of Ezekiel's eye is something that may one day be explored, but who knows.

Dark Vengeance: The overall story is fine, just Dark Angels hunting down a traitor warband. I really like Turmiel. He is a member of the librarian who is able to see into the future. Because of this the entire time he is the focus, he is constantly counting down by second until certain events happen. He also seems to grow a lot from the events of The Eye of Ezekiel. The other best part is Sevarion Kranon and how he was the best of the Crimson Slaughter and how his brother turned him into a monster.

Easy Prey: Anoth really short story which seems to continue from the end of Dark Vengeance, but I don't know if it does. At the end of Dark Vengeance Turmiel sees them going to a mining world and facing a member of the fallen. This Shory focuses on a small mining world and a member of the Fallen. It seems more like set up, but once again I have no idea if this builds to something.

Malediction: A somewhat sad story about a war hero who is not actually a war hero. Also, another named member of the Fallen Cypher. A mysterious character who fights for both the Imperium and for Chaos.
