RESCUING A BRIDE
The story is part of the Proxy Brides series by various authors but will read well as a stand-alone. After reading a later written book by this author, at the end of that book, she mentioned two of the sisters—in two previous books. I’m so glad I decided to read them.
During the Civil War, wife and mother, Laurel Sherman, was angry with her husband, Captain Edgar Sherman for leaving them. She will start offering herself to soldiers for provisions and then include her young daughters. Her oldest daughter, Robin, was raped by multiple men which resulted in a pregnancy. Captain Sherman will contact one of his men, Corporal Randolph Tihalt, and ask him to please marry Robin and accept her daughter, Hope. And Rand will accept the obligation.
“Surprised to find a letter from his Regiment Captain, Rand hurriedly slid aside his ledgers, unsealed the letter, and began to read. While several years have passed since you were last in my service, I am obligated to call upon you. As a gentleman of the highest caliber, I know I can trust you fully with the following request.---”
“Miss Sherman: It will be my pleasure to welcome you to Taylors Falls as my bride. Your father can attest to my character, and I am honored that he chose me to protect and provide for you and your daughter. Randolph Tihalt”
The story will involve the escape of Robin and Hope from her mother’s machinations and arrival in Taylors Falls. How she fears to begin a marriage—and relieved that Rand is kind and agrees that they need to get to know each other. While Robin and Hope arrive with nearly nothing in their possession, Rand will speak with his sister and must learn to adapt to what their future will be. Robin doesn’t expect much and even comes up with ways to help out by making extra money, by providing biscuits and coffee for sale to those coming to collect freight.
“You have no reason to fear me, Mrs. Tihalt. I believe the good Lord sent you as an answer to my prayers, and you will be treated as such all the days of my life.”
