The second installment of The Emancipator, or should I say, part two of the novel which was cut into thirds by the publisher, continues the saga of Ruiz. Aldridge continues to display his vivid imagination coupled with excellent pacing to move this story right along. Again, he reminded me of Jack Vance, and here, also Jack Chalker; if you like either of these authors, you will probably enjoy this also.

We knew from the beginning that the 'death net' installed in Ruiz's mind was modified by a 'friend' of his; it could not be disabled completely, but it was weakened with emotions. Now, for the first time, Ruiz has 'gone a little soft' and actually starts caring about people rather than being a complete sociopath. In particular, he has fallen for Nisa, the star of the theatrical production whose members were abducted by the rogue slaver Corean. In the last volume, Ruiz, along with several others of the troupe escaped the airship that was taking them to be made into 'mind slaves' to Corean. They managed to make their way to SeaStack, a crazy city of unknown origin that seems to be the home base of just about every pirate and rogue in space. Of course, they encounter all kinds of trials and travails!

So, still digging the story and looking forward to the conclusion. What a hidden gem of series! 4.5 stars!!

Perfektní prostředí, barvité a prokreslene... jediné ale je hlavni postava... Ruiz Aw je příliš nadlidsky... Aldridgeovi idealne vyhovovaly povidky, viz Dilvermoon a spol., ale pro roman zvokil az moc siknou postavu... povidky maji uveritelne charaktery, u Awa mi to chybi... ale je to poutave a ne hloupé.

You must read book 1 first, but I reread this series once every few years and it's STILL just as awesome. See review of book 1 for "Pharoah Contract" for details.

Продължвам да чета поредицата на Олдридж по-скоро от любопиство, отколкото заради това, че ме е грабнала с нещо. По принцип щеше да си е доста добра фантастика ако не беше доста неуместния любовен момент между главния герой и принцесата. Руиз Ау е супер-агент, който на моменти потреперва от ужас, отвращава се от какво ли не, но това не му пречи да е най-печения убиец. Естествено има съвест, мрази насилието и така нататък.
В романа има няколко клишета, които пронизват цялата поредица, но най-дразнещата е Низа - типичната принцеса, изпаднала в беда, чакаща да бъде спасена от своя рицар.
И все пак не мога да кажа, че "Императорът на света" е лош роман или че четенето му е загуба на време. Има много добри и доста оригинални моменти. Така Публий - създателя на чудовища е наистина оригинален и много добре изграден персонаж. Сюжета също си го бива.
Руиз и спасените от него роби попадат в пиратския град Морекупчина, откъдето трябва да се измъкнат. Само, че градът е под обсада от собствените си владетели и те трябва някак да минат през обръча от охрана. Затова Руиз се налага да потърси помощта на единствения човек, който може да помогне - Публий. Помощта обаче има цена и тя не е никак малка. Намесва се и Кореана - собственичката на робите, спасени от Руиз, която иска разплата и няма да се спре пред нищо.
Ще продължава чета поредицата, защото наистина съм любопитен как свършва.
