South African born, debut author brings a threat-and-danger, hidden-world fantasy with touches of Suzanne Collins which fans of VE Schwab or Sarah J Maas will love.
After returning to her realm, Cassia continues to use the magic she’d discovered in Selene. Little did she know, that wasn’t allowed and because of it, she’s abducted by the king. Luckily, Prince Lochlan is still living in the castle pretending to be under the king’s command. After Lochlan frees Cassia, they all need to flee Selene to escape the king and find allies elsewhere.
But in this new realm, all the inhabitants are afraid of the dark where a shadow is lurking, feeding upon them.
With nowhere else to go, they have to choose, either they face the king or this eternal shadow.

Shameez Patel Papathanasiou was born and raised in South Africa. She lives there with her husband, child and two cats named Turbo and Charger.
She considers herself a professional binge-watcher and fangirl. Don’t be surprised should you bump into her dressed as a Hobbit or Lady Loki and should you need anything from her, offer her a choc-chip cookie and her heart is yours forever.
Shameez fell in love with fiction, especially fantasy fiction at a young age. Her parents fondly recall receiving her first handwritten story before the age of ten, titled The Treasures of Zombie Island, which surprisingly featured no zombies at all.
Shameez Patel Papathanasiou has done it once again, in her captivating book "The Eternal Shadow" she reunites Cassia and Luke. Only this time, an unexpected smaller version has been taken across the lines for her own safety, Now with her own her own feathered necklace, Cass is no longer just responsible for herself. To make matters worse, she also has just said "I DO" to the last person she would have ever expected.
All he while, Cass, Luke's mom and their friends are trying to find out what evil shadow is stealing the magic from the Firsts.
It's a race for time to save Cass from the Shadow Creatures, To save Luke from himself and the creature he hates the most, For Cassia to protect the last feather from falling,, For her true love to try and save her. But is Cassia who everyone thinks she truly is?
Shameez Patel Papathanasiou will leave you screaming at the end!!! I literally yelled "AWH, YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!" Now I have to wait for book 3!
I'M SO EXCITED!! ❤️
WELL DONE!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
FANTASTIC!!
Thank you, NetGalley \ Shameez Patel Papathanasiou\Flame Tree Press\ For this OUTSTANDING eARC in advance for my honest review. My opinion is of my own volition.
Got an e-ARC from the author via netgalley, and I. AM. READY. (I am not ready). Lets goooo... --- Update: just finished!!!
Initial thoughts: I am SO MAD at the way it ended and now I have to WAIT for the next title in this series 😭 noooo!!
But this was so enjoyable, I flew through it. Would 10/10 recommend.
Proper review to come soon ✨ --- Note: This review contains a non-spoiler and spoiler section.
spoiler-free review: This book WRECKED me. I FLEW through it, that's how invested I was and that's how GOOD it was.
So, please. Get it. Read it. Thank me later. That's the end of my spoiler -free review. You've been warned 🙃
SPOILER review: This book did nothing but make my hatred for Rosheen deeper than before. No but really. I want to throw her with a damn chair. The scene where the mom dies WRECKED me you guys, iyoooh💔. Whyyyyy was that necessary? 😭 I HATE the way they treat my man Lochlan, mxm..I was NOT having it, ask Shameez 😂. I was so worried that Lochlan was going to be found out when he wasn't showing up when his father summoned him, but the WAY he gave his father the finger when he rescued Cass was EVERYTHING. And how's the Phoenix to be loyal to him instead of the father man! Invoking the blood pact and marriage to Cassia to solve a problem?! Yessssss Lochlan! Fvck being sired by either of his god-forsaken parents ! Also, WE LOVE a marriage of convenience, and then realising it's not just for the convenience or for protection, it's because he ACTUALLY loves you🥺 That spicy scene was naarce lol. I hated Lucas' whining and making everything about him, like damn dude? I know your mom thinks you're the shit and the world revolves around you but CHILL, momma's boy. Though, I am glad he eventually came around. Took him long enough 🙄
Can we get a moment to appreciate how absolutely adorable Calla is! And the way Lochlan helped her say goodbye to their mom, and the way she loves Lochlan and stuff is just ADORABLE!
When I tell you I was MAAAAAAD about that cliffhanger, I'm not even exaggerating. I literally screamed "No, WTF is this ending? Absolutely not!" And IMMEDIATELY messaged Shameez. She didn't have any remorse😂
All I know is, not only do I have to reread this book before the launch at the end of the month, but book 3 need to be published like yesterday. The end.
Thank you to Shameez and NetGalley for a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
----- Update 18/05/2023: Finished my re-read. So I read the arc of this book a few months back, and when I reached the end, I was SO MAD at the cliffhanger it ended on.
So this time around, I KNEW I was going to be mad at the end, so I was mad before I even got to the end. And so I feel like I was MORE mad at the ending after reading it this time around, because I was pre-mad before being mad again.
Only me?

Cassia is back to real life, her sister Calla is no longer sick, she can speak to Lucas almost every night through dreams, this time with sound - things are great, right?
She misses the Selene realm, she misses being able to heal people, she misses Lucas so much and ... him.
Cass has been "healing" kids in the Pediatric ward at the hospital she works at for sometime, it's the least she can do - that is until the usage of her power alerts Kain, Lochlan's brother.
Cass is once again dragged off into another realm, this time with no Feather necklace. She was taken in her own home with her sister and her mother present - are they EVEN OKAY??
With no idea how she will even get out of this mess, she sees the one person she hopes can make it all better and help her get out of here and her family safe.
Gosh DAMN!!! this book was a ROLLER COASTER - I was squealing, and laughing and smiling and GASPING that my husband kept coming to ask if I was okay HAHA
This series is honestly so good, If you are not so much a fantasy reader - but are looking to get into it, I truly believe this would be an AMAZING series to start off with. The characters are so well written they feel incredibly real, the world building and setting is honestly CHEF's KISS! The powers and how each power fits in the story is done so well.
The love story - DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED!!! I CAN'T even bring myself to spoil it for you - you have to read it.
If this has been on your list - READ IT - if it hasn't ADD IT!
Thank you to Netgalley and Flame Tree Press for the arc! I honestly rlly loved that the plot explored other realms in the universe and honestly lochlan’s char development is splendid!! That *certain* part of the plot w him and cass was soo funny omg Anyways!! I loved the set up for the last book! Lots of ends to tie up and hopefully I can nab another arc so I don’t have to wait as long to read it 😈
I honestly still can’t get my head around how amazing this story was. I absolutely loved the first book and was so upset when I heard that I would only get to find out what happens next when the sequel is released in April this year. But when I saw that there was an opportunity to read this NetGalley, you won’t believe how quickly I jumped on it and let me tell you this second book of The Selene Trilogy did not disappoint and deserves all of the 5 stars I have rated it!
There’s action, there’s romance, there’s drama and yes there’s that morally grey character that we all love to hate and we get so much more of them in this book (I am not complaining at all) We are also introduced to some new characters and to a new realm which I enjoyed learning about.
I didn’t think I could fall more in love with this series, but I was proven wrong from chapter one. When I tell you that I am not one who reads ebooks, but did not hesitate to read this as an aARC then that should be your indicator of how much I adore this series and the characters in it. I’m a big fan of stories told from different POVs and this one is no different. You really get a more in depth understanding of the different characters and it creates such a well rounded picture. The descriptions and world building allow your imagination run wild and you feel like you are right there with the characters. I was so immersed in this story that when it ended I was completely shocked and did not see it coming. 😭
I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to read this ahead of its release, but it’s a bittersweet feeling, because it means that I have to wait even longer until the third and final installment of this trilogy.
Disclaimer: I was gifted an eARC @flametreepress @shameezwrites @netgalley This does not influence my review and rating. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
I beta read this book, pretty soon after reading the beta version of The Last Feather (sorry to everyone else that has to wait 😅🥲) BUT I NEED MORE!
I want more! Someone the author made me fall deeply in love with the characters (as if that were even possible), gave me nightmares while also giving me EVERYTHING that my romantic heart yearned for
It's got:
🌑 time limits! 🌑 so much HEARTBREAK! Bring all the tissues 🌑 ROMANCE that will have you swooning long after you've closed the book 🌑 realistic relationship expectations and connections 🌑 so much pain (but in a good way and also not 🥲)
If you loved the Last Feather, you will devour this book

Happy publication day to my latest release. Yeah, I rated it 5 whole stars, because I spent years pouring my heart into this book and dare I say, I love it more than The Last Feather (is this like picking a favorite child?).
A huge thank you to every person who has bought or borrowed a copy, who has read it, reviewed it, or liked a promotional post about it. I appreciate all of you for showering this story with love.
I hope you enjoy my sexy, scary, adult portal fantasy as much as I enjoyed writing it.
It's been months since Cassia returned from Selend and Calla is well. She uses her healing magic on Earth and is taken by the King of the Firsts for it is not allowed. Lochlan saves her from the king and then the whole group flees to the Vineas realm where they have allies. But a shadowy being threatens the realm. They must eliminate this new threat for their allies to help them face the king and they're running out of time.
The writing as always is inviting and engaging making you feel like you've never left this world, which has grown bigger in this installment. It is so interesting to see more of the Firsts and their treatment of the Reborns will infuriate you. Also, the new realm is engrossing as is the new threat. The narrative is quite immersive with wording, that in its cleverness, pinpoints the exact emotion or imagery to further the story and embed it into our memorable reading experience.
Cassia is a poster child for kindness, determination and doing what is right. Lucas and his 'merry band" are just as determined. Squad goals in how much they care and watch out for each other. Lochlan remains a smirk-worthy fave, a misunderstood royal bad boy if you will. I am so happy this installment gave us the exquisite gift of a Lochlan POV, yay! It is so fun to see his inner thoughts. And his and Cassia's sizzlefest. Also, the unbelievable situation they are put in where the author's humor shines even more. The author does a remarkable job interchanging between POVs for the continuation of the story, furthering the plot and our love of the characters.
I really like the book's stance on prejudice, duty and honor and it is a beacon of hope in humanity. Heartwrenching, impressive storytelling. I gasped, smiled, clapped, laughed, read faster in anticipation of seeing what would happen next, even teared up. A more than deserving sequel that is surely a prelude to an explosive finale.
This was such a wonderful sequel! It’s definitely its own story while still being part of the greater plot. At first, I didn’t really know where it was going, because Cassia was in a dangerous situation that didn’t seem to have a solution, but after that, the main plot for the book became clear.
I loved how we saw more of Calla in this book! Her youth and innocence brought a lightness to this book that the first one didn’t have. She also seems to be a great judge of character, and I like that she has this quality even though she’s so young.
The world building was really fun, and the introduction of more characters was a great addition. I love the “ragtag bunch on a quest” trope, and this book did it really well!
I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say there was a lot of, ahem, tension between Cassia and Lochlan. Very delicious tension. It was enjoyed.
I can’t wait for book three to see how everything pans out! There are loads of loose ends where this book ends, and I’m very curious to see how the author ties them up.
I’m going to start this review by saying what I always say before reviewing a fantasy book- I generally struggle to read fantasy books. That being said, I (once again) felt that if you are a fantasy or non-fantasy reader, it does not matter- you will LOVE this book. The Eternal Shadow is as well-written as The Last Feather, and is so easy to read and follow that anyone can enjoy it. Say “Hello” to my first 5-star read for 2023.
As described in the synopsis, after returning to her own realm , Cassia continues to use the magic she discovered in Selene. She doesn’t know that this isn’t allowed, and, as a result, is kidnapped and brought back to Selene. Thankfully, Prince Lochlan manages to rescue Cassia, reuniting her with Lucas, Rosheen and the rest of the gang. They know that they need to fight the king eventually, but in order to do so, they need allies from other realms, and thus, flee to another realm to find them. However, the new realm that they have entered has problems of its own in the form of a shadow that lurks in the dark and feeds on their magic.
The Eternal Shadow is totally action-packed. The pacing is so well-done that, even with everything that happens in the book (trust me, there’s a lot), I sat on the edge of my seat and could not wait to grab extra minutes to read. The storyline is told in the third person, from the perspective of Cassia, Lucas and Lochlan. While I am not used to reading a three-person POV, Shameez does this so well. The switches are done at the best points to increase suspense or answer burning questions, and the storyline flows perfectly- in fact, much better than some dual-POV books I have read.
Naturally, the main focus of the book is Cassia, and how she comes to terms with returning to realms that are so unlike our world, and coming to terms with her powers. In addition to finding her place and understanding herself, we see how her relationship with those around her (especially Lucas and Lochlan) evolves as she tries to figure out what her role is in their lives and Selene. We also get to see how she feels post THAT KISS
If you have not read Book 1: The Last Feather, this will classify as a spoiler: After we got a glimpse into Lochlan’s thinking by the end of TLF, I was a total die-hard Lochlan stan. So best-believe that when I discovered that we’d get to read from his POV, I was absolutely DELIGHTED. I feel that that this is why the character development for Lochlan is probably the richest in this book. We do still get to see and experience more of Cassia and Lucas, but personally (and maybe I am bias) I feel that Lochlan stole the show. There are moments that had me feeling incredibly emotional and that was largely owing to Shameez’s ability to convey the biggest emotions with the smallest details (something I am a big fan of in books, in general). Also I don’t think I can ever look at a birthday cake the same way (IYKYK)
In addition to building on the characters, the world-building in TES is so well done. We get to discover new realms and creatures, and the imagery is absolutely incredible. I had multiple moments where I couldn’t help but think to myself “WOW! This would look AMAZING on TV/Cinema”. Adding to the richness is that Shameez took the time to outline customs, traditions and curses- and yes, there is a WEDDING (whaaaaat) but trust me, probably the best part of the wedding is the post-wedding “curse”. I literally laughed so much I had to gasp for air.
If you were a fan of The Last Feather, you will absolutely LOVE The Eternal Shadow. It adds so much more to the trilogy and is probably my favourite book of the two (although ranking them would be like picking a favourite child). Honestly, I can’t wait for Book 3 to be released so that we can know what happens after the last page of TES (I am positive you will feel the same). I would like to thank Netgalley, the author and the publishers for allowing me to read and review this ARC.
“I’ll defeat death to be with you. I’ll fight fate. But there is no way you result in my end when you’re the only reason I know what it feels like to be alive.”
After that line, do I even need to say anything else to get you to add The Eternal Shadow to your TBR if it does not already feature? It's book 2 in the Selene Trilogy and I was lucky enough to get an ARC from @netgalley, @flametreepress and @shameezwrites before it releases on 11 April. (I'm convinced this is my birthday present as it's one of my most anticipated reads of the year and releases the day before my birthday so thank you again Shameez)
This story features beautiful world building, emotions and imagery, and the pace rapidly builds to a thrilling end that has you desperately craving book 3. You grow to love the group even more as they face new challenges, and Shameez handles these relationships so well that you often have intense reactions to certain scenes (I certainly did) There was such a delicate balance between the need to save Selene and to face the Shadow yet Shameez introduces light moments at just the right time to make you love them all, just that bit more.
I'm partial to sisters in a story and I love how well Cassia and Calla's bond is explored
And of course.. Lochlan. I didn't think that I could love him more than after The Last Feather, but I was wrong. He is (insert chef's kiss here) just perfect.
But there is no way you result in my end when you're the only reason I know what it feels like to be alive."

💜REVIEW💜
After being teleported against her will back to Selene for using her magic. Lochlan manages to save her and reunite her with the rest of the crew. Knowing that the King will be on the hunt, Lochlan and Rosheen teleport them to the Vineas realm. All is not as it seems as what awaits them is an evil magic hungry shadow.
I will say this again Shameez is a brilliant writer. I was deeply immersed in this story, it's characters, the romance and every aspect of it, so much so the ending left me shattered. The character development is incredible and the addition of new characters are done flawlessly. It is truly an action packed, edge of your seat, page turner (worth the hours I spent reading and not working)!
Thank you @shameezwrites @flametreepress and @netgalley
Disclaimer All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I technically read this last year, but I am absolutely floored. This author has done it once again!
As someone who doesn't read much fantasy but absolutely fell in love with the world of Selene in the first installment, I thought that I wouldn't be able to love another book more. And then this one happened. It was so nice being able to get back to a world where I knew all the characters and where each of them felt like a long lost friend. Cassia, Lucas and the gang went through a different adventure in this one and it was so fun to be able to read about that. There was also the budding romance that kept me flipping the pages to find out more. This is installment felt like a long lost friend and it may even be my favourite fantasy book I've ever read.
If you haven't gotten into the world of Selene and you haven't gotten to know the badass Cassia, the wonderful Lucas and the misunderstood Lochlan, what the hell are you waiting for?
Firstly, thank you so so much to Shameez for sending me an eARC of TES. I'm so grateful to have received an early copy.
This book follows on from Cassia, who left the Selene Realm with a cure for her sister, Calla. With her powers growing, she feels even more connected to the realm where her best friend, Lucas, is a part of. Cassia continues to use her magic, but what she didn't know was that this wasn’t allowed - this soon leads to an abduction by the king. Lochlan escapes with Cassia, but they need to flee Selene to escape the king and find allies elsewhere.
In another realm... But something dark and terrifying is waiting for them. Waiting for Cassia. A dark, consuming shadow.
This was so brilliant! The characters have matured (in many ways 👀) and the story is so endearing and captivating. Perfect for those that love a little spice and danger in their fantasy world.
Just finished reading The Eteenal Shadow by Shameez Papathanasiou. Sequels are sometimes disappointing but this book was anything but that. I loved every second of it. Amazing world building and character growth. It had all my favourite tropes: a forced marriage bond; enemies to lovers; "will they, won't they". I have no doubt this book is going to be a huge hit!
Exquisite! Book 1 was lovely but this sequel kicks it up a notch! It is beautifully written and we get to see a softer side to Shameez's writing and she NAILS it with her characters! Simply on edge for book 3 and cannot wait.
I recently finished "The Eternal Shadow", and wow, what a sequel it was! The pace is fast, the world-building is satisfying, and the character development is electrifying!
That cliffhanger though! Can't wait for the next one!
I wish I loved this more, book 1 made me feel like the plot would juat get better, like the characters would grow but sadly, I wasn't very impressed. The only thing that got me through this book was Lochlan and Cassia, I absolutely love them so much. They are adorable and so truly sweet together and yes it's an extra slow burn but I loved it. Other than that, the side characters like Brie and Nisa and Xo werw all great. The world is still so good and so unique. I didn't really care for the plot in book 2, a huge shadow thing stealing magic from people that was totally unrelated to the first book. Yes I think it'll all come together in book 3 but unfortunately I'm not interested enough to carry on. I think that even through all this I could have enjoyed the series if not for Lucas and Rosheen, they are not the greatest characters and Lucas might has redeemed himself in the end of book 2 but Rosheen is horrid. I cannot stand that woman, she's narcissistic and treats Lochlan, HER OTHER SON, in such a deplorable manner I almost DNFed a few times. I'm sad I didn't enjoy this series.
"How strange is it, that something as light as a feather can carry so much weight."
Aaah this book! I absolutely loved it! We Cassia grow and learn and coke back the Selene Realm. It was so much more! We got so much of Lochlan that I just couldn't help absolutely falling in love with him! Definitely one of my new favorite morally grey men! Cassia will always be special. Rosheen and Lucas did ride my nerves throughout but in the last few chapters I forgave them.
I loved the multi-pov! I loved that the romance was slow brewed and almost inevitable, not just lusty spice, marriage magic aside.😉 The world building again was to the point! A new realm, new dangers, a new monster, another cliffhanger. I can't wait to see what happens next!
Wow wow wow this book was even better than the first!
I am left with a scramble of thoughts and feelings, so to organise myself I'll do what I do best: make a list.
• I always found Calla relatable with her high-sensitivity empathic abilities which make her regulate other's emotions, often without even trying, and make her sick when she absorbs too much 'feelings' from everyone else (unfortunately, mine is not a result of super cool interdimensional magical abilities) • I was surprised by how relatable I found Cassia in this book! I somehow came to love our main girl twice as much as before (who knew that was possible?) and I could relate to so much of what she did and thought and felt and said :') ILY CASSIA LET'S BE BESTIES!! PLEASE!!! • I will always always ALWAYS love the platonic soulmates bond between Cassia and Lucas. It's so important to value and represent how friendships can be just as deep and fulfilling as romantic relationships. • I have complicated feelings for Rosheen. I can hardly imagine how hard it must be to carry the burden of her power, knowledge and status BUT THE WAY SHE TREATS LOCHLAN HAS MY HEART ACHING <\3 My man deserved better parents :( *tries and fails not to hate Rosheen* • The emotions in this book are written so well I could FEEL them. Especially the grief! Gosh, the grief in this book wrecked me. • Many parts of this book were like a hug. The found family, the attention given to food, the light banter providing relief from the action and suspense, the sensory details, the wholesome Vineasian village... it all made me feel warm and mushy inside <3 • That surprise romance trope???? I want to share my excitement with everyone because it's one of my fave tropes ever (especially in fantasy novels), but I don't want to ruin the wonderful surprise... IYKYK ;) • And lastly, the best best BEST part of this book: Lochlan. Just him. No further explanation needed. If you haven't met my snarky, tortured, morally grey immortal lover YOU ARE MISSING OUT! BIG TIME!
I love this book. I love this series. I love the world-building. I love the plot. I love most of these characters (and love to hate the others). I LOVE YOU SHAMEEZ! <3
🪶 “ Cassia, there is magic in the darkness, I hope you find yours….. because I know I have found mine.” - Shameez Patel
🪶 The story follows Cassia who is abducted by the king for using her newfound magical powers after returning from Selene realm. Luckily she is freed by Prince Lochlan. Together they flee to another realm along with Lucas and other fellows to find allies in order to defeat the king. But they have no idea what monsters awaits them in the new realm.
🪶 Pick this up if you like/don’t mind/are looking for: 📌 fantasy series - this is the second book in the Selene trilogy 📌 marriage of convenience troupe - one of my most favourite troupe and that too happening between the characters who already have feelings for each other. AYKM? 📌 enemies to lovers 📌 the bond of true friendship 📌 found family troupe 📌 well developed characters with their own stories that’s gonna make you sympathise with and cheer for them 📌 witty banters between the main characters - yup that’s the part I loved most about this book. 📌 romance that’s gonna give you butterflies in the stomach 📌 spice level 🌶🌶 ( personally I am not a big fan when it comes to open door romance but if it involves Cassia and “L” then count me in please 🙈) 📌 a new bookish boyfriend perhaps: morally grey character who smells like vanilla, knows the art of teleportation and whose witty banters and one-liners will make you swoon over him. Trust me I am already a fan of his banters from book one. 📌 if you are not a fantasy reader like me then you definitely need to pick this up because THIS IS THE BOOK that got me into reading fantasy. And without any doubts this one is gonna be my MOST FAVOURITE FANTASY READ OF 2022. 📌 books that end on cliffhanger and now I am left with no other option but to eagerly wait for the next book in the series.
🪶 Thanks to the author and NetGalley for giving me an opportunity to review the eARC.

Taking the phenomenal story world from the first book and expanding it, @shameezwrites manages what very few authors have successfully pulled off. Creating a secondary world equally if not more captivating than the first. This installment is as thrilling and captivating as the first, and I was completely and utterly consumed by it. (My husband was laughing at my constant sighing and wishing book 3 would magically appear on my shelf.) Book 2 also brings us a bit more spice and steam with several blossoming relationships amongst the characters. An addictive grumpy-sunshine trope will have you loving this found family vs blood family dynamic.
This book also deals with a few intense themes like loyalty, trust, loss, grief, abduction, attempted sexual assault - so make sure you check all the trigger warnings.
This author really has such a phenomenal voice and talent and I would love to see her get the hype her books deserve. She is truly a force to be reckoned with.
An amazing and worthy follow-up to The Last Feather, The Eternal Shadow is a book that takes you into its world and doesn't let go as you fall in love with the characters and the (multiple) worlds they inhabit.
In the same way Cassia is swept away to Selene again without warning, you'll find yourself hooked from the beginning - a beginning that will have you genuinely terrified for her one moment and then cheering for her the next.
The action and the stakes seem even higher in this sequel, where the cold and evil presence of its antagonists are stark against the warm and tender moments between the characters. It's a balance that the author does well to create tension throughout the whole book, especially with the multiple POVs from its fully-realized characters that breathe life into the story. It was also lovely to see more of Calla, Cassia's sister. (The moments where the characters are looking after her little sister are adorable by the way.)
And there running alongside an already rich plot is the simmering romance that genuinely will take your breath away. There were so many beautiful and understated phrases throughout the book that lent a hand to the backstories of the characters - particularly Lochlan - and will make you fall in love even more.
All in all, The Eternal Shadow is one to devour in a few nights and will have you gasping for more, only to find the last page came too soon.
Thank you to @netgalley and @flametreepress for the eARC of this book.
I am actually really terrible at knowing what is coming out, unless it’s a series I’m specifically following. One book I am looking forward to though, is The Eternal Shadow.
I do love a portal fantasy, and in the second book of The Selene Trilogy, we see Cassia, Luke, our favourite morally grey Lochlan, and their friends travel from Selene to the realm of Vineas to escape the king. They planned to raise an army in Vineas, but instead discovered a new threat - a shadow being that steals magic.
I didn’t think I could ship Cassia and Lochlan harder than I did in TLF, but boy oh boy was I proven wrong. I am in love with Lassia. Cachlan? I don’t know. Whatever their ship name is, I’m here for it.
I love slow burns. I want to tell you all the tropes I love in this book, but I don’t want to give you spoilers.
There’s such a great emphasis on familial and friend relationships in this series, as well as found family, and it is one of the best things about the story. Shameez really has a talent for combining humour and heartfelt moments together without it feeling corny or cheesy.
I cannot wait for this book to come out in April because I need to own a physical copy.
These books feed my need for action, romance and drama in just the perfect amounts and are EVERYTHING to me.
As this is a second book in a series, you would wonder how it could enthrall a reader and capture their attention, but I think Shameez did this job splendidly. She managed to bring in new plots and atmospheres whole staying true to the main plot and feeling of her fantasy world and it was absolutely incredible. It was so fun learning about the other realms in this universe. It just added so much more to the story that it ultimately made it an even better fantasy read than it already was.
The character development of the characters in this book was *chefs kiss*. I loved loved loved how the different characters in this book had their own POV's. It allowed us to understand each and every character so much more while also subtlety making us fall in love with them.
The cliffhangers that Shameez leave you on should be criminal. If you thought the ending of the first book was surprising, just wait until this one. It was one of the most surprising and gobsmacking conclusions that I've ever read.
