Against all odds, Adirah Messa has been accepted to Billet University, a prestigious institution founded in the 1800s for people of color. Determined to excel, she arrives at the university intent on minimizing distraction and focusing on her studies. That goal is soon interrupted when she is noticed by members of the ''in'' crowd, who invite her to the most popular frat party on campus. Adirah finds herself smitten with someone of another race and is taken on a ride she can never return from. Unbeknownst to her, Adirah's newfound love is not only a master seducer; he is also one of the most powerful figures in the underworld of Vampirism. Tangled up in a web of love, Adirah becomes involved in her lover's lifestyle in more ways than one. Before she knows it, Adirah becomes Queen to his tribe. Is she prepared to accept all the responsibility that entails? When a rival clan targets Adirah and her identity is exposed, she must make some quick and serious decisions. Will she react in time, or is it already too late?
I enjoyed this book so much. I couldn't put it down. I braided my hair while listening and got through it in a day, in two sittings (I listened to the first 4 hours, took a nap, then got up and listened to the last 3 1/2. It was EASY to do. Definitely can point out the "Vampires in love" cliche's, but those cliche's were better written and way more SPICY than other vampire love books. This is the first of the kind I have read in this particular genre. I have to be honest with you, I own two of the Twilight series books, and while I have watched all of the movies when they came out, I can't seem to bring myself to read the books. They just don't hold my attention long enough to get through them or to the good parts. BUT THIS BOOK DID! This vampire series is like it was made for adults. This series was much easier to enjoy and wrap my adult mind around reading about fantasy creatures. LMAOO! I liked how these vampire clans were warring over RACE! It was the white vampires, being against the black vampire simply because they were BLACK VAMPIRES and had been turned during a slave revolt back in the antebellum south. Kesh was kind of the worst and I COMPLETELY understand why Villa is mad at him and I am 150% on her side about all of it! Because he didn't need to be fucking her if she was NOT even in the "running" to be his queen. OF COURSE she would be mad at him over that. I mean, WHAT f*cking can of worms did Kesh expect to open with that?? The main character Adirah is ok. I could take or leave her as a character/ person. Kesh is HEAD over HEELS in love with Adirah and I don't get WHY....but whatever, I guess that's how he like it. I enjoyed the ending. It left an opening for the second book and I kinda hope VILLA GIVES KESH HIS COMEUPPANCE! And WTH happened to Lina's ass? I liked her, she reminds me of myself. 5/5 I'm on to the next book in the series!!!!!
This book was so good! This was the first book I read about vampires. Once again a found a new topic to read about. The story takes place at a HBCU. It featured some black history as well. I never thought I would enjoy reading a vampire love story. I will definitely be reading the 2nd book in this series.
