About the author

Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) was born in Wexford on the South-East coast of Ireland in 1965, where he and his four brothers were brought up by his father and mother, who were both educators.

He received his degree from Dublin University and began teaching primary school in Wexford. He has lived and worked all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. After the publication of the Artemis Fowl novels, Eoin retired from teaching and now writes full time. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.

Koukuttava huumoria sisältävä draamakertomus pojista (Valtsu ja Make), joiden kohtaloksi tulee virua kirjastossa joka päivä 2 tuntia ennen kuin vanhemmat hakevat heidät. Pottu-Mäkinen on tiukimman kurin kirjastotäti, ja todella tarkka järjestyksestä ja säännöistä. Hänellä on kuulemma perunapyssy tiskin alla, ja sillä hän voi murjoa sääntöjä rikkovien kasvoja pahaan kuntoon... Kirjaston "lastenosasto" koostuu yhdestä pikkuhyllystä ja matosta. Lopulta on pakko alkaa lukea, ja aluksi sitä ollaan vain lukevinaan, kunnes eräänä päivänä, löytyy sattumalta kiinnostavakin kirja; kirja, jossa jättiläiset meinaavat tapella keskenään. Kirja oli lievästi hullunkurinen, mutta ei täysin epärealistinen kerronnaltaan. Huumoria syntyi henkilöhahmojen kärjistetyistä ominaisuuksista. Alussa Koivulan perheen meininki on todella villi, kun 5 veljeä tuo mukanaan kaverinsa, ja siellä kiipeillään mm. verhoissa sotamaalaukset kasvoilla. Juuri tämän sähellyksen vuoksi isä keksii laittaa pojat kirjastoon rauhoittumaan koulun jälkeen. Kirja onnistuu olemaan yllättävän koukuttava lukukokemus, vaikka ainekset eivät kuulosta kovin jännittäviltä; kaksi poikaa kirjastossa.

Loistava helppolukuinen kirja, jonka nopeasti, ja sopii 2.-4.-luokkalaisille mainiosti.

Summertime, and what better time is there to spend in the library enjoying reading? Two brothers, Will and Marty, find out the hard way when their Mother decrees that they will be dropped at the library on her way uptown, and she will return for them up later after she picks up their father from work. These two boys are the oldest of five boys, so Mom still has the other three younger ones with her. Thus explains the summer library - soon to be regular - trips.

The librarian's fame, Spud Murphy, is a legendary terror for those who dare to enter the library. Quickly upon entering, the boys are dictated the rules by Spud. They are warned that they better not break any of them!
Truly a delight, this is a younger children's book with cute illustrations.

Föräldrarna till fem vilda bröder vill ha ordning på sina barn och tvingar de två äldsta sönerna att tillbringa lovet på biblioteket. Bibliotekarien, Potatishäxan, är en stenhård kvinna som styr biblioteket med järnhand. Hon skrinnar runt biblioteket i sina halkiga tofflor och håller ordning, beväpnad med stämplar som hon kastar pricksäkert om något olämpligt är på gång. Är någon riktigt störande sägs det att potatispuffran åker fram. Men när bröderna tillslut upptäcker böckerna och har så svårt att slita sig från dem att de använder sig av sina lånekort för att låna med sig böckerna hem, då lyser Potatishäxans skalbaggssvarta ögon upp.

Good book for beginning readers ready for a longer story. It is also a great book for humor as well as showing how great libraries and reading can be when used the right way for the right reasons. Another good thing about this book is it's potential to introduce students to Eoin Colfer's work.

Esse livro é especial pra mim. O li pela primeira vez depois de alugá-lo na biblioteca da escola, junto com minha irmã. E depois dessa o aluguei pelo menos mais umas duas vezes. Talvez eu tenha me identificado com os personagens (na minha escola, as crianças do Ensino Fundamental I só tinham acesso à sessão infantil da biblioteca também. Mas consegui fazer com que me deixassem ter acesso à sessão "adulta"). Reler essa história deixou meu coração quentinho ❤️

Voi että, tämä oli parempi kuin muistinkaan! Aivan mahtava! Toivoisin vaan, että meidänkin kirjastossa olisi tuon ikäisille (8-10 v.) jännittäviä lukukirjoja taistelevista jättiläisistä sun muista perinteisistä aiheista... Tuntuu, että tuollaiset tarinat on enimmäkseen piilotettu paksuihin satukirjoihin ja kansanrunoushyllyyn... ó_ò Kuka kirjoittaisi kansantarinoista kuvitettuja, helppolukuisia lukukirjoja?

I adore Eoin Colfer, Artemis is one of my favorite characters as of late. This is a much easier read and more appropriate for young readers than Artemis, yet Colfer's wit is still spot on. This is a great young reader book. My 2nd graders LOVED it! At least three of my kids borrowed this book (or got their parents to buy it) after we read it, they wanted to read it over and over.

A quick read. This book was recommended to me by a wonderful new fifth grade teacher in our school. She shares it with her class to break the ice at the beginning of the year. I had no idea it was about a librarian when I began. It is a clever story with fun characters and a great message about books.

Funny and consequently great for young and, in particular, reluctant readers. Without being too obvious it has a couple of good lessons: reading is fun and people are not always what they seem. This is one that I would read with my children.

Hilarious. Such a fun book - there were moments when I could not stop laughing, I'd read parts to my partner and we'd both be in stitches. Plus, it's a book about a cranky librarian... What could be more enjoyable?

10-vuotias Make ja 9-vuotias Valtsu pakotetaan ensi visiitille kirjastoon, hommaamaan kirjastokortit. Poikien on jatkossa tarkoitus viettää 6h viikossa kirjastossa sivistymässä, sillä vanhempien mielestä viiden veljeksen meno kotona on äitynyt kesäloman aikana liian raisuksi. Mutta kirjastossa vaanii huhujen mukaan hurja kirjastonhoitaja Pottu-Mäkinen kaasukäyttöisen perunapyssynsä kanssa rangaisten huonosti käyttäytyviä vekaroita. Tästäpä alkaakin varsinainen kirjastoseikkailu!

Aloitin kirjan eräänä la-aamuna aamupalalla ja luin...ja luin...ja luin...kunnes yhtäkkiä kirja olikin lopussa! Mitä ihmettä! Luin sen kertaistumalta ja sitä ei kohdallani tapahdu juuri koskaan! Pidin kirjan tarinasta todella paljon, se oikein imaisi mukaansa! Se oli ratkiriemukas, höröttelin kirjalle ääneen ja yllättäen se oli myös hieman jännäkin. Toki intoni kirjaa kohtaan voi selittyä myös sillä, että olen itse kirjastossa töissä. Yhden tähden tiputus tuli Tony Rossin musta-valkokuvituksesta. En pitänyt siitä. Se oli mielestäni huolimattoman ja suttuisen näköinen.

Kirja oli helppolukuinen eikä mahdottoman pitkä (96 s.) ja sopii varmasti jo hieman lukeneille, sanoisin noin 2-4-luokkalaisille. Kirjassa oli normaalia isompi fontti ja mukavan väljä riviväli. Kuvat kevensivät lukemista, niin että kirjan aukeamat eivät olleet täynnällänsä pelkkää tekstiä.

Educational books with great humour📗
Two brothers, Will and Marty, were fussing at home, so their mum told them to find a new hobby, which was reading. They were told to go to the library where the scary, legendary librarian, Spud Murphy, was. They HATED reading. But once they got books and start reading, they were engrossed in books to expand their knowledge and world.

Will and his older brother were taken to the Library three times a week for 2 hours to spend the holidays. Their mum's idea. They felt like they were going to suffer a lot because of the librarian, Mrs. Murphy (or Spud Murphy, as it was known she had a spud gun).
There were many things she did to visitors that terrified them. Besides that, reading was definitely not in the boys' list of fun things to do.
That was until Will finds a book he thinks it is interesting and so does Marty, his brother.
I loved the idea of the book! It will be a great read aloud for 7yo up! Spud Murphy would also be a great character to be dressed as in Book Week!

This is a really lovely book about 2 young boys who are reluctant to spend time in the library because it's super boring and uncool. Eventually the boys become engrossed in a book and soon learn that reading can take you to so many different worlds and on so many adventures. They unlock the treasure of reading.

Obviously, I am not the target audience of this book but it is a book that my boyfriend read as a child and said he loved. Now, he doesn't read a lot so this is special for him to be giving a reccomendation. Basically, I wanted to read this and with it being so short I read it in one sitting and actually really enjoyed it. Obviously, its not really for me but I do think I would've enjoyed this as a child and I do really love the message it is giving to young children. I think this is a book young children should be encouraged to read. ⭐⭐⭐

I'm not sure if it's just because I am a librarian but I found this book really funny. 5 boys under the age of 11 in one family. I love that the 3 youngest are thought of as angels by the parents. How many of us have had the annoying little brother that gets away with everything? Marty and Will are the 2 oldest and the mom decides that a few hours at the library would be good for them. Then we meet Spud Murphy, she has a real first name but let's not get ahead of ourselves. The boys are given pink library card and made to stay on the carpet in the children's section and to their surprise they enjoy reading. Silly things happen as they try to sneak books and Spud Murphy is known for being tough and what if they are caught??

I work at a library, doing activities for children, and they asked me to read something sometime, so I was looking at the child section of a library and found this gem by chance. It was perfect! Colfer tells us a story from humour and exageracion, and makes entretaining for us the days of a couple of kids punished at the public library. The ending was heartwarming and felt right. The author was not only addresing at the children, but also at adults: parents, teachers, and librarians: libraries are not for punishment. They are for read, and for making reading fun.
For anyone who works with children, this is definitely a really good option to work with them, and both your children and you will love it.

"The Legend of Spud Murphy" is a hilarious children's chapter book for ages seven/eight to twelve. The book has a male protagonist and is packed with real-life scenarios of sibling squabbles and childhood adventure, even in common every day situations like being forced to go to a library during summer break. "The Legend of Spud Murphy" is a recommended read for kids who do not like to read or visit the library, especially so for young boys given the protagonist for relatable purposes. The comedy and fast pace of the story line will surely hold the readers attention throughout the entire book and spark or rekindle a love of reading (and maybe a better understanding of librarians, since most of us love kids and aren't packing potato shooters under the circulation/reference desks).

When brothers Marty and Will are told by their parents that they will spend three days a week at the library, they are worried. All the kids know not to get in the way of the gas-powered, potato gun-toting librarian known as Spud Murphy. You'd get shot by a potato for breaking the no noise rule, or for moving off the carpet in front of the book shelf holding the junior books for children. On their first day, the brothers also learn about the rubber stamps held firmly in place in her waist belt... Boys in grades 2-4 are going to love this series of adventures about the Woodman brothers. Humorous black and white illustrations add to the hilarity of the story. This is a good series for those that want something in addition to the Magic Tree House series.

If he’s not being teased by his big brother Marty, he has to deal with the terrible, three-headed bundle of cuteness that is his three younger brothers. Even worse, his mother has the brilliant idea of packing Will and Marty off to the library during the holidays. She just doesn’t understand! Not only is the library no fun, it’s also the habitat of the legendary librarian Spud Murphy. If you put a foot wrong, it’s rumoured she will use her dreaded gas-powered spud gun and you don’t want that - just ask Ugly Frank how he got his nickname! Eventually Will and Marty discover a love of books and that Mrs Murphy isn’t so bad after all!

Um ótimo livro infantil sobre medo de bibliotecas e bibliotecários. Marcos e Eduardo Medeiros estão fazendo tanta bagunça em casa que seus pais decidem que eles devem ir à biblioteca durante as tardes das férias para ler. Mas os dois não querem ir, pois lá se encontra Dona Ângela (ou Dona Batata), uma bibliotecária malvada com um lançador de batatas a gás que odeia crianças.

A história se desenvolve como boa parte dos livros infantis: o medo vai dando lugar à fascinação e as expectativas são quebradas. É uma história simples, para a faixa dos 8~10 anos de idade, que pode dialogar bastante sobre a função das bibliotecas e o poder dos livros. Como bibliotecário que sou, adorei!

After a particularly crazy day of madness and warpaint, Marty and Will’s dad declares that they need to do something “educational”. Thus beginning their afternoons at the library, at the mercy of feared librarian Mrs. Murphy. Upon arrival the boys are led to the junior section, a single bookshelf with four rows of book and a small patch of worn carpet. After several painful afternoons not being allowed to fight, shout, or make loud bodily noises, “all the things young boys live for”, the boys accidentally beginning reading. The easily read chapters are sprinkled with illustrations adding additional humor. Aimed at a younger reader, Colfer hits the funny bone.

کتاب را به دلیل ارزانی و اسم نویسنده‌اش خریدم. نویسندۀ آرتمیس فاول که واقعاً اولین جلدی که ازش خوانده بودم خیلی برایم جالب بود. کتاب خیلی خیلی روایت ساده و بانمکی دارد و تمی شبیه آثار رولد دارد. چیزی میان شیطنت و بدآموزی و تندوتیزی که واقعاً خواندنش را لذت‌بخش می‌کند. از تصویرگری تونی راس هم نباید گذشت که همیشه من را یاد آثار کویینتین بلیک می‌اندازد. ای کاش پایان بهتری داشت. نه اینکه پایان بدی دارد اما با توجه به روند داستان دوست داشتم با شیطنت بیشتری پایان بگیرد اما نهایتاً تجربۀ خیلی خوبی بود و همیشه خواندن کتاب‌های این شکلی (به قول من چرک) حالم را خوب می‌کند. کتاب‌هایی که همه گوگولی نیستند و خیلی شبیه بچه‌های واقعی هستند. با تومخی‌ها و هوشمندی و تمام صفات خوب و به ظاهر بدشان.

I read this book to my sons when they were of an age to appreciate it. We all enjoyed it, especially as we all made a weekly pilgrimage to the local library on a Saturday to swap our read books for fresh reads.

Colfer takes a classic tale of the plucky heroes pitted against an evil villain (in this case the titular librarian) and had a great deal of fun with it. It is an easy read, funny and engaging and enough jokes aimed at younger children and adults for it not to be a chore for parents to read. And of course a great introduction to the author.

Ну що сказати, мила дитяча книга про те, що бібліотека не така страшна, як здається, а читання, це не катування, а цікаве заняття.
Двоє хлопчиків, Марті та Білл, змушені відвідувати бібліотеку тричі на тиждень. І якщо біля книг можна просто посидіти (адже читати нудно), то справжня проблема – це страшна та жахлива місіс Мерфі, яка панує у бібліотеці. А ще вона дуже розумна, тож намагатися перехитрити її марно. І ось одного разу, сидячи на килимку біля книг і страшенно нудьгуючи, можна ненароком відкрити одну з книг і... забути про час.
Гарна історія, яку приємно прочитати увечері.
