Carrion Comfort meets Apt Pupil where a uniquely gifted boy falls into a dangerous cat and mouse game with the arrival of a monstrous protector.
Neurodivergent, young Dwight Skinner considers his mental challenges to be a super power, but it's a pure bloodline that will put him in danger. When a tragic event brings a mysterious Romani neighbor, Mr. Mortimer, out of seclusion and into the Skinner family's lives, Dwight and his emotionally overloaded mother find an unsuspecting protector in this dark whisperer. Death and horrific secrets trail the unfolding life of Mr. Mortimer's past, and questions soon arise as to who has the more sinister of intentions, Dwight or the "Gypsy" he unconditionally trusts. The whispers have the answer.
Whispers of a Gypsy brings fear back to horror and psychological suspense the way we remember classic Stephen King and Thomas Harris novels, while adding Patten's trademark penchant for hair raising twists and capturing some similarities to current horror favorites of Alma Katsu, Stephen Graham Jones, and Gabino Iglesias.

Set within Romani and Jewish folklore, this book captures not only the horrors of WWII inside a concentration camp but, in the present day, shows us how these atrocities have long serving consequences.
Our main protagonist is a mentally challenged boy named Dwight. This is a character you'll feel for yet is not simply a one dimensional shallow representation of what mentally challenged means. He's fully developed and the author has done a great job in depicting Dwight with multiple aspects of his personality.
Mr. Mortimer is a victim as well, although he's turned his rage outside and is basically a killing machine for shadowy governmental departments. He was experimented on in a concentration camp and, despite his age, these experiments have made him not quite inhuman but something a little more than just human.
He takes Dwight under his protective wing as Dwight's father and brother heap abuse on him, blaming Dwight for an unfortunate event that killed his grandfather.
Mr. Mortimer isn't having that and thus begins to terrorise those seeking to hurt Dwight.
Anything else would be spoiler territory but suffice it to say that this fast paced novel will take you to places rarely seen in the horror genre.
Dwight Skinner is a young boy whose mental challenges give him his “superpowers.” Dwight’s neurodivergence allows him to see people’s auras as colors. But it is Dwight’s pure bloodline that makes him special. When Dwight’s zayde dies, the Skinner’s Romani neighbor Mr. Mortimer enters their life. Mr. Mortimer recognizes Dwight’s vulnerabilities and vows to protect him. But is it Dwight or his pure bloodline that his guardian monster desires most?
Whispers of a Gypsy is the latest novel by J.T. Patten. Patten takes a step away from his usual espionage book and dives into the genera of horror. His background in military intelligence and as a spy novel writer shows as Patten delivers an intense psychological thriller. Jewish and Romani superstitions, mythology, and mysticism combine to create Patten’s characters. The cast of enigmatic personalities and Patten’s use of dark themes set the scene for this tale. But the twists turns, and shadows around every corner give this suspense horror the feeling of dread. As horror novels go, this one will keep you up at night listening for the Whispers of a Gypsy.
Whispers of a Gypsy by J.T. Patten. Purity is a short-lived gift Neurodivergent, young Dwight Skinner considers his mental challenges to be a super power, but it’s a pure bloodline that will put him in danger. When a tragic event brings a mysterious Romani neighbor, Mr. Mortimer, out of seclusion and into the Skinner family’s lives, Dwight and his emotionally overloaded mother find an unsuspecting protector in this dark whisperer. Death and horrific secrets trail the unfolding life of Mr. Mortimer’s past, and questions soon arise as to who has the more sinister of intentions, Dwight or the “Gypsy” he unconditionally trusts. The whispers have the answer. A brilliant read. I loved the skull and bones at the start of each chapter. I liked Esther. And Mr Mortimer and Dwight. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.
As soon as I started reading this book I knew it would be unique, and that I was in for quite the journey.
Once I got into the story, I was completely pulled in and could not put the book down. Our main protagonist Dwight is a young, neurodivergent child who we immediately find has something special about him. A tragic accident sets off a series of events that brings the mysterious Mr. Mortimer into the lives of Dwight and his family, revealing terrible secrets, ancient folklore, and monsters. Natural vs unnatural. Devils vs angels. What is fate and what is playing God?
This story is heartbreaking, anger-inducing, and macabre; mixing real-life horrors with the paranormal. The author sent me a copy of this book for an honest review, and I'm so glad I gave this a chance!

Note: Whispers of a Gypsy is a story about how purity of heart dies in a world of hate. Using the word "Gypsy" refers to members of the Romani people (and/or their sub-groups Roma, Sina, etc.). The G-word, however, is pejorative. It is used in this case for conscious correction and to relate to an Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp book and the over 500,000 Romani killed by the Nazis. This group was one of the foremost peoples who suffered inhumane tests while in the camps. Na bister 500,000
Review: J. T. Patten is a former government intelligence and special mission advisor, and it clearly shows in his writing. Whispers of a Gypsy is more than a horror story. It's both a historical in its scope and contemporary in its tone. It's both a spy thriller and a commentary on modern society. It's both a "whodunnit" and a supernatural horror show. It's a blend of genres, beholden to none, and I loved every page of it.
The plot is complex and spans decades from the horrors of Auschwitz and Josef Mengele to the modern-day Chicago suburbs. It touches on both Jewish and Romani folklore with references to both dybbuk and golem legends and even blends a little Shelley's Frankenstein and zombies into the supernatural aspects to create a truly unique version of an anti-hero. Told in alternating timelines of past and present as well as multiple points of view, the overall effect is a dark tale rooted in historical fact with far too plausible outcomes.
Whispers of a Gypsy is a thought-provoking novel that treats one of the most horrific episodes of human history with care and the reverence it deserves while also spinning a yarn of contemporary fantastical horror and international intrigue. Any fan of dark fiction will be delighted by J. T. Patten's work, and I look forward to his next book.
It takes something special for me to read through an entire book in one sitting. J.T. Patten's Whispers of a Gypsy has definitely accomplished this with a great plot, believable and unique characters, and maybe even the whispers of Mr. Mortimer encouraging me to keep reading.
In Whispers of a Gypsy, readers are introduce to young Dwight Skinner, a boy with cognitive difficulties who believes he has super powers and the rest of his Jewish family: his rather abusive father, struggling mother, and jealous younger brother. When tragedy strikes the Skinner family involving Dwight's grandfather, the reader is now introduced to another major character: Mr. Mortimer an individual with a rather dark and supernatural past drawing all the way back to the Second World War. It is with this cast that Patten takes the reader into a rather dark, exhilarating ride across history and the present as we try to figure out is Mr. Mortimer's intent with Dwight and the Skinner family meaningful, sinister, or something even more complicated.
Having been a fan of J.T. Patten since his Sean Havens Black Ops thrillers and Task Force Orange series, I noticed elements of his "blacker than black" theme in Whispers of Gypsy which is what is expected from a Patten novel. J.T. does a great job of placing relatable or unique characters into situations that are bad for the character or that bring out the worst in the character themselves. This is what makes J.T. a great author in that he crosses the line that many will refuse to cross. However this crossing of the line provides the reader with an original tale and not just a previously hashed out plot from previous books or from other authors.
With this being my first horror novel that I have ever read, I am glad that it was written by Patten since it still gave the sense of a "blacker than black" thriller and had historical elements to it that I am familiar with as a student of history. However I was also left on the edge of my seat the entire time not knowing what might happen next. I was in addition left shocked at the various plot twists and turns that also come standard with a J.T. Patten novel. With each book Patten continues to grow and hit it out of the park with new plot points and events that make it extremely difficult to stop reading as I found out after reading the entire book in one sitting. Like I said at the beginning, it was almost as if the whispers of Mr. Mortimer were encouraging me to keep going.
If it is a dark thriller that you are looking for where ordinary and unique people are thrust into wild scenarios then you should read this. If you are looking to see what a horror/supernatural novel is like then you should read this. Bottom line is this: get this book!!!! Hats off to you J.T. for yet another great read!
To think I nearly turned this down, due to having too many books to read!! This was one of those reads, where I didn't read the synopsis, I just opened it in my reader, and went for it. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I went in open minded for anything, and I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
I was thrown in from the get go, into Dwight Skinner's family. A neurodivergent boy, who sees things differently to others, sees the good in everyone, even bad people. This is just one of the main characters I met along this journey, and alongside Mr.Mortimer, was definitely my most loved character.
From the start, there is a sense of mystery that surrounds this family, and throughout, I was fed information to unravel some mysteries, as further ones are added. Even though it's essentially a never ending mystery, it's never tedious or repetitive. The plot is complex, yet the writing makes it easy to understand for the most part. There were times I found myself needing to read bits over again just to make sure I understood properly, as its quick paced at the same time.
Descriptions and scene setting are elaborate and well rounded, and you can really envision what the surroundings look like, this really helps, along with the plot, how immersive it feels to read. Great insights into characters thoughts and feelings too, which further increase the immersion.
This read covers some of the horrors of the holocaust, and although in some parts gruesome and dark, it is done in a way that's sensitive and it's clear a lot of research has gone into it. It's filled with both Jewish and Romani folklore, which adds to the mystery and supernatural elements of the book. This also comes in when the reveal of where the titles name comes from too, and I loved this almost dark-mystical element.
There are some flashback scenes that explain Mr.Mortimer's "Birth" back in a concentration camp, as well as how all of these characters, who would usually have nothing to do with each other, are linked. It's very well written, and it helps to understand why Mr.Mortimer is doing what he does.
Please bring back Mr.Mortimer! I would love some more.
Whispers of a gypsy by J.T. Patten was a fast paced, well written with dark themes with historical facts of WWII.
I don’t want to give too much of this book out, so my review will be short.
This story is set in two different times (modern-day set-in Chicago, and WWII Auschwitz), alternating throughout the book. This is done to give more insight on the character Mr. Mortimer and the terrors that he experienced while being experimented on in a concentration camp.
Dwight is a special needs child who is often bullied and abused by his own father and brother after the death of a beloved family member. Dwight likes to think of his ailments as superpowers.
Quite an intriguing tale of how these two characters find comfort in each other.
The plot was thoroughly thought out, giving you a dark thriller mixed with historical fiction, mixed with horrors, mixed with mythology, folklore (Romani, and Jewish).
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark, fast paced books. There are some triggers that may effect some including: Graphic Violence, Medical Procedures, The Holocaust, Racism, Child abuse, and Domestic Violence. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Excellent Writing, Not the Kind of Story You Come Across Everyday.
Whispers of a Gypsy by J.T. Patten is a fantastically written story that brings together both historical facts, culture and science. Beyond theses, there are many other contrasting themes like love and hate, good and evil, and bias and acceptance that helps to broaden the ideas in this book. Using believable and historically related characters, the author was able to manage all these themes together and the result is an excellent writer. I’ve been following the author for quite some time and there is no doubt that she is an excellent author with lots of potential. Until now, many of his works are spy thriller. Whispers of a Gypsy is his first horror and he has done an excellent work in managing the subject matter well. I am certain that with this piece of literature, Patten has won for himself a fresh flow of new audience. Beyond the surface level, this book deals with the dark secrets of the world war—the exploitation and experiments carry out on the Jewish and the Roma population. It's like walking back in history to unearth some of the huge atrocities that we easily overlook when telling history tales.
Until now, JT's forte was in espionage and spy thrillers—and with "Whispers of a Gypsy," he broadens his appeal to an entirely new audience.
And good for them, because "Whispers" is as engrossing, compelling, and page-turning as his spy thrillers. He wrings horror from the most simple acts. How many times have you sat at a table and traded a veggie bite with someone across the table by tossing it into his or her mouth? JT opens "Whispers" with this familiar act that sets the stage to twist your realities into the nightmares to come.
No spoilers, but know this: Start reading first thing in the morning so you can be done while it's still light out.
Whispers of a Gypsy is an intense read that dives in and out of historical facts, nonfiction, and folklore. . Patten does a spectacular job weaving through several different timelines. The main character is a young man with the mentality of a child that thinks he has super powers.
The main character comes from a special bloodline that might cause the family some ups and downs after the death of his grandfather. This being said we are introduced to more characters that are there to protect and others with other intentions.
Throughout is psychological horror novel we try to find out who or what is the evilest of them or is all!
Overall a great read with some frightening cringy (in a good way) situations. At times this novel can get intense, but I found myself not being able to stop reading it.
This is a fast paced read that’s well written with some dark subject matter that’s sure to leave readers feeling uneasy.
Mixed with Romani & Jewish folklore, historical facts from WWll and a lot of creepiness this book packed a decent punch.
Taking place in present time as well as flashing back to the horrors of a concentration camp, Pattern does a fantastic job weaving past horrors with modern day consequences. I couldn’t stop myself from actually wanting to google more about Dr. Mengele after reading this and the horrible experiments he performed in those camps.
If you like a good, dark, horror read with some historical facts present you’ll definitely want to pick this book up!
Imagine a world where the experiments that happened in nazi concentration camps went beyond the atrocities we read about in text books and memoirs. Human experiments so vile that you've only seen them in horror movies or read about them in books.
That's the world Patton created within these pages. Part historical fiction, part science fiction, wholly horrifying. When I FINALLY picked this book up, I could not put it down. It truly reads like an action packed suspenseful horror movie. Generations of family secrets unfold as the pages turn. Highly recommend!
Thank you to JT Patton for the gifted copy in exchange for a review.
This is my first time reading Patten’s work besides an anthology we share stories in, and I was not disappointed. I knew from the short story that he was a very talented writer, but reading a full length book really let him flesh out the story. There are some seriously dark moments in this book, and some scenes that were so creepy I couldn’t stop reading to see what happened next. I admit I know very little about Jewish folklore, but that’s part of the reason I was so excited to dig into this book. I left extremely happy with investing the time in this story, and I plan to read more of Patten’s work. Check it out!
This book certainly is like nothing I have read before. The subject matter, German experimentation on the Jewish and Roma population is thrust into your face from the first chapter until the end of the book. It certainly makes you wonder if this could, in fact, actually be the truth…could his be happening without our knowledge? You will have to read this and see what your minds tells you.
This was such a well-written suspenseful novel. I can't wait to read more by this author. Whispers of a Gypsy blurs the lines between good and evil and what really makes a monster. This was a page turner that I read in almost one sitting.
Grand Guignol, gruesome and grotesque - a new voice has arrived on the horror fiction scene: J.T. Patten. Shocking and thoroughly terrifying, and written with such skill that one can see, hear and smell the rancid stench of decomposing flesh. This is one of the scariest novels I have read in years. Using the tropes of Jewish and Romani folklore and the horrific genetic experiments of the Nazis, and the visual imagery of a young boy in a mask and snorkel (something which has terrified me ever since seeing Hammer's classic The Snorkel) the fear factor permeates every single page. Sleep with the light on after reading this!
Scary, Thrilling and well written book, this takes the horror genre to a new level. Most books take a while to build up the scene so it is scary but the way Patten wrote this is very impressive. Definitely the Horror book for me for 2023!
Interesting take on the horrors of the holocaust but from a different angle than is usually used. I haven't seen many people mentioning the horrors of the Romani people in fiction or even non fiction for that matter. Definitely a gem.
Scary... This grabbed me from the first chapter where I thought that what was happening to the old man was happening TO ME. I couldn't breathe right along with him, the writing is just that vivid. This is the kind of book that takes a reader away from the real world. So immersive. Every word was a treasure.
One of the best horror novels I've read. A supernatural thrill from start to finish. Good characters, Romani folklore and well written. Let's hope JT Patten writes more like this. I received this book from Hellbound productions and Netgalley for a review.

A story of the horrors and ordeals of the concentration camps, the experiments and procedures undertaken by the powers that be, on the innocent and vulnerable. The results of these experiments, many years later, come home to roost, and the horrors erupt yet again. Who is the true monster here?
A good amalgamation of imagination and history.
A macabre story, definitely not for the faint hearted!
What an amazing read, a very cineastic 'horror'-thriller. When a member of a Romani family dies, the calm in the neighbourhood is over. Mr. Mortimer is a fantastic anti-hero character, I'd love to read more about. Esther, Dwight and every other character in this novel also seemingly come to life in this fantastic story. I wonder if Mr. Mortimer might be back....
Might have potential for the narrators cadence into robotic mixed with the stilted way the one character speaks makes of ear-torture and can’t proceed more than a few mins.
